Important
Before you go and add data to this entry, please note that if you don't have solely data from the DVD; i.e. you have registered it to Steam, playing using Steam, please add comments, test results and such to Steam page, not here.
HOWTO
INSTALLATION
For best results, start with a clean wine prefix, then install vcrun2008, d3dx9_36 and vcrun6sp6 using winetricks, then install the game normally.
If you are unable to install Steam from the DVD, try installing it from http://store.steampowered.com/about/
Also remember to disable in-game community if you are using Steam.
DirectX 11 is not currently known to work, use DirectX 9 instead.
Use of downloadable content may eventually cause the game to crash after a number of turns. If you are experiencing crashes, disabling any extra DLC is advised.

I get the part of executing this command: winetricks corefonts vcrun2008 d3dx9
However, the second part of what I need to do before installation is unclear (it has something to do with skidrow)
As you can already imagine, I attempted to run Launcher.exe and CivilizationV.exe using wine (version 1.3.36 & 1.3.28) with no success. Here is the error I get.

Please help, I just don't understand the "wine lingo" translate for a newbie. My obvious goal is to get civilization V running through linux.
No sound and 3d hexagons instead of fog of war
by Mike LJ on Tuesday March 1st 2011, 10:20
I installed following instructions and with appropriate winetricks, but no sound plays and there are large 3d hexagons where the fog of war should be. Otherwise, the game is playable.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit and Wine 1.3.14 on Acer Aspire 5542 with fglrx driver.
Looping and then black screen..
by billywilly on Friday January 28th 2011, 3:50
Hi,
ive recently upgraded my pc and so its not my hardware that is the issue.
when i load it takes long to get it going as it did before i did the upgrade (it usually goes in a loop for awhile), but after a few loops it goes into a black screen and then it just stops, when i go to system monitor it sometimes says civ 5 is sleeping or it says zombie..ive got winetricks d3dx9 and vcrun2008 installed also plus i am running wine 1.3.
at times it does start, but only 1 in a 100 tries or so and when it does it, it usually freeze while loading my game...i found that the screen resolution is off when i start the game, so it could be a indicator of the underlying problem, but how i can change that i dont know...on a side note i have had some issues with my Nvidia driver, but ive started a thread on ubuntuforums.org for that: ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1676080
anyways, hope someone has any new ideas i can try....

by Who's Asking on Sunday January 16th 2011, 15:49
I'm reporting it does install perfectly and it plays well, have not found a thing that doesn't except for the intro video, but it's not a bother at all.

Game is unplayable slow
by Mathias on Friday October 1st 2010, 6:56
I am trying to rung Civilization V under
Ubuntu Lucid (64 bit)
wine-1.3.3 (from the ppa)
on
nvidia GeForce 6200 TurboCache (256 MB) with the nvidia driver 260.19.06
Athlon X2 4800+, 4 GB RAM
The main menu comes up in a reasonable time, the controls there are working fine, too. But as soon as I start the tutorial, preformance breaks down completely. Loading the Tutorial takes about 5 minutes (start till the map show up), moving a unit around almost one minute. The grpahics setting are put to the absoulte minimum.
The error message I am getting in the console is
err:d3d_shader:shader_glsl_select >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_OPERATION (0x502) from glUseProgramObjectARB @ glsl_shader.c / 4610
if I leave GLSL enabled and
err:d3d_draw:drawStridedFast >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_OPERATION (0x502) from glDrawElements @ drawprim.c / 46
if I set "UseGLSL" to "disabled
I installed d3d9 from winetricks and tried various registry settings under Software\\Wine\\Direct3D (VideoMemorySize is always set there, since I got an error with the autodetected value.
