Selected Test Results (selected in 'Test Results' table below)
Some days ago Yahoo released the version 220.127.116.11, which have some improvements and in combination with wine v1.3.34 it comes closer to working, but is far away from a 'daily tool'. So still an experimental experience.
YIM - Yahoo! messenger, installs out of the box, this mean, you can download the small piece of software from Yahoo's page and start the installation. This works flawless. The needed VisualC++ libraries are also installed then a Flash plugin.
YIM now is able to log in and it's showing your address-book and the on-line status of your buddies. You can edit the preferences and some contacts. But there are still unexpected crashes, so it isn't really an tool for every day.
Windows-Version (winecfg) was set to Windows 2003. Windows 7 wasn't tested.
What does not
The chat window didn't work. If you open it, YIM will freeze. And crash with a debugger message.
If you try the other direction, from an external account to YIM under wine, there will be no reaction nor a chat window opening. The preferences had to be handled with care, they also like to crash. Still far away from useful use.
What was not tested
Points, which is not possible to test is a real on-line chat. Or the direct edit of the buddy-list. Also the behaviour under Windows 7.
Is rated as Garbage because it still lakes of real usability.
HOWTO install Yahoo! Messenger (but than it will not work!)

You will get a file called msgr11us.exe.

In Step 1 of 4 choose Custom Install.
Uncheck all excepted Yahoo! Messenger* (required).
Hit Next for the next step (Step 2 of 4).
Hit Next for the next step (Step 3 of 4).
An overview is given.
Hit Next for the next step (Step 4 of 4).
The installer will download all necessary files and install them.
Uncheck Launch Yahoo! Messenger. Otherwise it might crash.
At last hit Finish to end the installation.
The installation is finished. You can start the Yahoo!Messenger by typing in the terminal: wine /path/to/Yahoo!/Messenger/YahooMessenger.exe
(You will have to replcace /path/to/ by the correct path.)
There are some errors in the GUI:
e.g. see bug no. #21579
and others. Until now YIM - Yahoo!Messenger isn't really working on wine.
If you want to come closer to some problems you will need to use winetricks: winetricks riched20
will help to prevent the bug no. #21579 but than you will run into the next bug(s): you can send a message but not receive one. So this is only for experimental use.
(latest change: 2013-01-20)
This version is not really for productive work. Use native clientes like Pidgin, Kopete or so instead.
Please hold in mind the rating criterias
Please hold in mind the rating criterias: an application with crashes on startup or normal use is garbage and nothing else. Thanks!

It seems that Wine should do something about Yahoo Mess 11 in order to attract more users in using Linux and to make Linux system more colorful to the desktop-based users. Pidgin is not quite enough compared to all the nice features of Yahoo Messenger. But if you ask me, Yahoo Messenger is rather Linux-style of program judging by his life-appeal themes, options and so on. It looks like old school BSD also and even KDE style.
The users would love a Yahoo Messenger 11 in Linux improvements :)
