starting the game: the main menu appears

mouse clicks don't register in the main menu: it's impossible to start a new game or even quit the game properly.
What was not tested
anything past the main menu: the mouse problem makes the game unplayable.
Additional Comments
Interestingly the mouse problem seems to affect only the Steam version of the game: the demo (from the developer's site) worked correctly for me.
No dll overrides were needed to start the game. Once the problem with the inoperative mouse is fixed the game should deserve a much better rating.
