App does not save
by lostman on Tuesday April 9th 2013, 13:35
I have ME1 installed via wine and steam on Ubuntu 12.04.

Game does not create save files.
It reports that savegame was created, but savegame list is empty then.

Does anybody have a solution?

Mass Effect Extremely Slow
by Alexandre Maciel on Saturday April 6th 2013, 19:11
CPU: Intel Corei5 760
GPU: Gigabyte ATI Radeon 5850
Ubuntu 12.10, 64 bits
Driver: AMD Catalist 13.1

Hi! I successful installed Mass Effect (even the DLC Bring Down the Sky) from Steam using Wine. But I got horrible FPS, something between 1 and 8 fps (@ 1920x1080, all settings to minimal)

My configurations:

- DirectDrawRenderer: gdi (opengl is not better)
- Multisampling: enabled
- OffscreenRenderingMode: fbo
- RenderTargetLockMode: auto
- VertexShaderMode: hardware
- VideoMemorySize: 1024

Native Libraries:
dinput8, directx9, vcrun2005, xinput

Someone have an idea what else I could try?

DLC issue

How did you get 'Bring Down the Sky' installed? I've been researching up and down the internet via google and I haven't found a clue after 3 hours

low frame rate caused by 64 bit wine wrapper
by Raath on Monday September 10th 2012, 3:12
I had some major issues running ME after I upgraded from Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit to Mint 13 Maya 64 bit.

ME would run but the frame rate was crippling. I had winetricked everything to try and fix this but nothing worked.

It turned out that when I recreated the prefix on Mint, it used winetricks to recreate the steam prefix it automatically created a 64 bit wrapper and since that recreation this game and others I was playing perfectly under 10.04 started having problems.

Under Ubuntu I'd downloaded the 32 bit wine and compiled it but under mint I couldn't get the 32 bit wine to go so I defaulted to the 64 bit.

Recreating a 32 bit wrapper instead of a 64 bit and installing dinput8 with winetricks fixed my low frame rate issues. Game now plays perfectly.

Mouse finally works in OS X
by Karol Trojanowski on Saturday August 4th 2012, 3:18
Wine 1.5.10 and xorg-server-devel 1.12.99.0 installed from macports, Steam installed with winetricks and MouseWarpOverride=force.

The cursor stays in the center of the screen and I have to navigate the menus from the keyboard, but at least gameplay is possible and I can look around 360 degrees.

Please confirm this setup!

Integration is EXTREMELY glitchy
by squiggleslash on Sunday May 6th 2012, 9:47
Running this on Ubuntu 12.04 using the NVidia proprietary drivers, and the game is smooth and works well. But, and it's a big but, it really isn't integrated with the rest of the system:

- Lose focus to another app (including the screensaver), and the various screen UI elements (like the status bar at the top) suddenly overlays the game and the ENTIRE UI (not just Mass Effect, but the rest of the computer) becomes inaccessable. Essentially the only way to quit is to Shift-Alt-F1 into a console screen, log in, and kill the Wine processes.
- Similarly, Alt-Tab doesn't work and let you switch out of it. Once the game is up, you have to run it until you exit it - which, given the game normally takes days to run, is a fairly major problem.
- Also: Can I make a general complaint about Wine's habit of allowing applications to resize the screen without warning? This is yet another app that does that, and it's only controllable with the keyboard until you get the Settings screen up and change the UI to your screen's real resolution.

This game absolutely shouldn't have the Gold/Platinum ratings given to it. It's great that it runs at all, but the problems switching context (can't do it intentionally, everything breaks if it happens outside of your control) means it realistically needs more work.

Freezes when creating new game - ATI video driver bug
by Zootal on Saturday May 5th 2012, 19:32
As soon as I go through the new game creation, it freezes at the point where it shows a pic of earth from space. I've tried this with wine 1.4, and wine 1.2.3 (play on linux version). Neither work. When it locks, the background music continues to play, but the gui is frozen, no interaction, nothing works. You get the pic of the ship with the spinning star thing in it, a blank screen. A pic of a planet from outer space appears, and it freezes. When this occurs, nothing appears in the console.

Slackware 13.37 64 bit.
Wine 1.4,wine 1.5.3, and wine 1.2.3
ATI Radeon 3850
PlayOnLinux 4.0.19-dev

After poking around a bit I found that this is a known issue and appears to be a bug in the ATI video driver (again...jeez, ATI, will you ever get your driver act together??)

There is a patch, but the patch for wine, but it did not fix the problem. Anyone know of a way to get this to work on an ATI video card?

Hangs after character creation even with motion blur off
by Raath on Tuesday March 20th 2012, 15:18
As title says. Went into settings and turned off Motion Blur gets through character creation but then I get a picture of a planets horizon, hear the music but the game does nothing. Left it alone for half an hour and still on the same picture.

Crashes after splash screen.
by RavenSqu on Thursday February 23rd 2012, 17:46
I have installed Mass Effect on steam under a default wine prefix in 1.4-rc4 on Ubuntu 11.10. Mass Effect installed fine in steam with no errors, but when I try to play it, the Mass Effect splash screen comes up, my desktop resolution changes to 1024x768 (the default in ME before any settings change) and ME crashes, leaving my desktop in the low resolution. Any ideas? I'm still kind of new to the whole wine thing.

Works great on Ubuntu 11.10...
by Phil Pemberton on Wednesday December 14th 2011, 8:23
I've got Mass Effect running fine on Ubuntu 11.10 and WINE 1.3.34. The trick is to go into the graphics settings (inside Mass Effect), then disable the Motion Blur Effect.

Once you do that, the framerate goes from "unplayable" to "about the same as a 'real' Windows install".

Mass Effect Steam version still work with patched Wine1.2.2
by parinya on Tuesday May 3rd 2011, 10:01
Just wanna notice If you have bought this game through Steam It still can playable but you only need something here..

1. Install Wine1.2.x with this patch (Wine1.2.2 working with me)
bugs2.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=32614
Have been try to compile with Wine1.3.x but it doesn't compatible with patch so stick with 1.2.x instead.

2. Use RegEdit and change "MouseWarpOverride" option to "force-box"

Then Mass Effect : Steam Edition still playable and very stable. I run the game with highest setting all option turn on.

My system
- Ubuntu10.10 64bits with patched Wine1.2.2
- PhenomII X6 1050t
- GTX465 witn driver Nvidia 260.19.06
- 8GB DDR3
