Additional Comments

Note: Due to compatibility problems when using wine on a 64 bit system, the wine config needs to be created explicitly as a 32 bit install:

WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/WineGames/WoT winecfg

then winetricks can be used to install "all the other stuff":

WINEPREFIX=~/WineGames/WoT winetricks d3dx9 d3dx9_43 vcrun2008 msxml3 wininet ie7

finally install the game:

WINEPREFIX=~/WineGames/WoT wine Downloads/WoT_internet_install_eu.exe

It automatically launches the game updater.

Install

There are three ways to run the game.

One is to grab a binary of WOTFLIX - links scattered over the comments - but, sadly, it is not open-source wine, so don't post here any issue with it.

Second is to run a script made by B3Wu1 which will patch the wine sources in user-friendly way - http://goo.gl/mfyT0 - but to download you need to be registered on Russian WoT forum.

Third and most according to the wine spirit is to grab sources and patch them yourselves. Here is how it is done:

1. To run the game you'll need to install some additional libs via winetricks:

 winetricks d3dx9_36 vcrun2008 corefonts

If you have strained internet connection, you can run Visual C Redist supplied with game installer and download d3dx9_36.dll separately.

2. To have mouse working, you'll have to apply this patch (using patch -p1) - https://gist.github.com/895204 (thank you again, Vincas) - and rebuild wine from source. Note that current patch may crash during debriefing.

3. Game should be run from World of Tanks directory, otherwise labels will be unreadable, see http://i32.tinypic.com/10zztjk.png

4.  If you don't have sound - try recompiling your wine with ./configure --with-openal option - it should fail if you don't have needed libraries, but sometimes doesn't. openal package may be called openal-soft in your distro or lib32openal-dev.

5. To run the autoupdater you'll need to install some additional libs via winetricks:

 winetricks msxml3 wininet ie7

6. If the minimap is not displayed correctly you'll need to install some additional libs via winetricks:

 winetricks glsl-disable

7. To have artillery/sniper mode working, you have to change the key from "Shift" to another key. (example: space)

The version on PlayOnLinux worked for me on Ubunto 12.1 x64. The version that is installed using PlayOnLinux is the NA client however so you need to follow the below steps to change it to the EU client.

Firstly go through the installation process for the NA client using PlayOnLinux and when you get to the end and the WoT launcher loads and starts patching the game. Cancel it and finish the final step in the PoL installation wizard. Then download the EU client from the www.worldoftanks.eu and install that using Wine. Once it's installed you can replace the installation on wine with the NA copy that has been installed in PlayOnLinux.

Open PlayOnLinux and select World of Tanks and click "Open the directory" on the right hand side. This is the NA installation, go back one folder and delete the World_of_Tanks folder. Leave the current folder open and open a new window to browse to where your wine installation is installed(it should be home/.wine/drive_c/Games and cut the World_of_Tanks from there and paste it into the folder on the PlayOnLinux directory structure you already have open. When you load WorldofTanks using PlayOnLinux it should now be the EU client instead of the NA client. I presume this will also work similarly with the Russian and Chinese versions of the client.

random crash
by zozo6015 on Friday February 15th 2013, 6:01
Hello I am running this game in MacOsX Mountain Lion.

If I am running the wineskin with the built in X server then I have very very low framerate(somwhere between 3-10) that gets better if I set the game to run with the mac's XQuark however with both I am getting random crashes of the game. Most of the time when I enter in sniper mode but some time it is enough for me to stay in one place without moving the tank for the game to crash.

Here I have the last part of the wine log

I have tested out the newest world of tanks with the autoupdater. I have tried to start the client in the directory too. I hear the sound, but the screen are only white. What have I done wrong? I am using wine version: 1.4.1

Hi,

I can launch the game up to connection dialog, once provided the credentials, the game starts to load, but fails and displays:

/home/xxx/.wine/drive_c/users/xxx/Application Data/wargaming.net/WorldOfTanks/
(xxx - name of your account on Ubuntu or other distribution)
and edit the file preferences.xml

>> change true on false
>> change 3000 on 1024

...save file.

Open Terminal, and...
winetricks glsl-disable
winetricks videomemorysize=1024

Wine does not compile, but the game works well.

improving performance?
by Ákos Maróy on Sunday April 29th 2012, 6:59
Hi,

I wonder about performance results other people are getting.

I'm getting a decent framerate (60-80 fps) with an nVidia GTX 470, but on another machine with a GTX 275, the framerate is mostly below 10 fps. both are with full screen 1920x1080. in the latter case, all rendering options are set to minimal.

interestingly, the framerate seems to be the very same at all resolutions, and both in windowed and fullscreen modes, so that doesn't seem to have an effect.

this is all running on a wine build in the previous post (latest git sources, with the mouse patch)

what known ways are there to improve performance?

making it work on ubuntu 11.10
by Ákos Maróy on Sunday April 29th 2012, 6:54
this is how I made it work on ubuntu 11.10 x86_64:

sudo apt-get install git
sudo apt-get build-dep wine
mkdir -p ~/wot/src ~/wot/usr ~/wot/var/wine
cd ~/wot/src
wget cdn1.worldoftanks.com/patches/auto/WoT_0.7.2_eu_setup.exe
git clone source.winehq.org/git/wine.git wine-git
wget dl.dropbox.com/u/6901628/raw3.patch
cd wine-git
git apply ../raw3.patch
./tools/make_requests
./configure --prefix=$(cd ~/wot/usr; pwd)
make -j4
# this will take some time, make a tea or something
make install
export WINEPREFIX=$(cd ~/wot/var/wine; pwd)
export PATH=$(cd ~/wot/usr/bin; pwd):$PATH
cd ~/wot/src
wine WoT_0.7.2_eu_setup.exe
# here, install gecko when wine asks for it
# don't run WoT at the end of the installation
cd ~/wot/var/wine/drive_c/Games/World_of_Tanks
wine WorldOfTanks.exe

after all this, to run WoT, save the stuff below in a script file:

------------- 8< ----------- cut here ---------------------
#!/bin/bash

export WINEPREFIX=$(cd ~/wot/var/wine; pwd)
export PATH=$(cd ~/wot/usr/bin; pwd):$PATH
cd $WINEPREFIX/drive_c/Games/World_of_Tanks
wine WorldOfTanks.exe
------------- >8 ----------- cut here ---------------------

Compilation problems with patch
by Jim Bauckman on Friday December 2nd 2011, 9:38
I am trying to apply the patch to a version of Wine I am compiling.

I had to change a few parameters in the patch as the wording did not match what was referenced in Makefile.ini and intput.c

Originally all hunks were failing. Now hunk four is failing and I am receiving a malformed patch error.

Advice?

Version 7.0
by Grams79 on Tuesday November 29th 2011, 13:31
Let us cross our digits in hopes that the new version being released in a few days will help support our efforts in running WOT on Linux.

I do believe that the developers at Wargaming.net, LLP have been listening to our suggestions a little more lately.
Testers be ready for the update.

Trees substitutes render incorectly.
by Przemysław Lib on Tuesday October 18th 2011, 19:03
Trees and bushes when are far away are rendered as squares with textures. It works because parts of square are transparent thus giving illusion of 3D.

For me alpha do not work, and I see gray-green squares around bushes.

Setting hight rendering distance helps a lot, but it still leave problem of long range sniping.

Any idea, whats going on?

That's because the software AppDB is running on has this idiotic idea of stripping protocol prefixes from urls. Use this plain text version - pastebin.com/73SpgC0f

How to get the latest WINE's git working
by Vincas Miliūnas on Tuesday July 19th 2011, 7:44
Normen gave the instructions how to get an old version of WINE to get working on MacOS, similarly I will provide the commands how to get the latest WINE's git (also works with 1.3.24) to get working (hopefully on all systems).

These instructions use the proper raw input patch I am in a process of developing and remove the regression that was introduced by enabling usage of the GL_ARB_map_buffer_range extension.

git clone source.winehq.org/git/wine.git wine-git
cd wine-git
wget dl.dropbox.com/u/6901628/raw2.patch -O /tmp/raw2.patch
git apply /tmp/raw2.patch
./tools/make_requests
wget dl.dropbox.com/u/6901628/remove-GL_ARB_map_buffer_range.patch -O /tmp/remove-GL_ARB_map_buffer_range.patch
git apply /tmp/remove-GL_ARB_map_buffer_range.patch
./configure
make -j4
sudo make -j4 install

If you already have WINE's source code checked out, be sure to apply the commands on a clean master tree:
git clean -fd
git checkout master
git reset --hard origin/master

Tutorial using wineskin on OSX
by normen on Tuesday July 12th 2011, 11:46
Since it was not exactly easy getting this to run properly on OSX, heres the rundown:

You need XCode 3 (not 4!) installed and a checkout of the git version of wine:
- git clone source.winehq.org/git/wine.git wine-git

Then go back to the 1.3.10 version of wine:
- cd wine-git
- git checkout wine-1.3.10

Then apply the patch from the HOWTO:
- patch -p1 -i raw.patch

Now launch wineskin winery and create a new custom build using the source folder, I added --with-openal to the configuration, I don't know if its necessary though as seemingly CoreAudio is used.

With this I get a working mouse (patch) and working sound (doesn't work with later versions of wine).

To change the video settings, launch the app once, quit it and then edit drive_c/users/Wineskin/Application Data/Wargaming.net/WorldOfTanks/preferences.xml by hand.

Happy tanking ;)
Normen

This worked and as funny as it sounds my refresh rates are also better with 1920 x 1200 fullscreen than in the default window =)

There were two config files with the same name, the one found below the World of Tanks directory was empty, but the right one was found from C:\Users -directory.

Happy wargaming to all =)

Can't change resolution
by Mikko Saarinen on Sunday June 5th 2011, 6:24
Hi

First of all, thanks fot the WoTFLIX. Now I got the game running too =)
There is still a major problem with the settings:

Changing the graphics to fullscreen or anything else than the default 1024 x 768 resolution crashes the game. Doesn't matter if Wine is emulating virtual desktop or not =(

The game isn't really playable with the default settings, because the window is so small that it is hard to see the enemies!

Any thoughts?

Updated patch to get mouse to work
by Vincas Miliūnas on Wednesday March 30th 2011, 15:14
I've updated the raw input patch with the newest version of OldCigarettes Windows 2000 XP API Wrapper Pack (the older patch was from 2009), it applies to the current version of WINE from git - gist.github.com/895204 . Apply with git apply raw.patch or patch -p1 < raw.patch .
I've also fixed the older patch to apply to the latest WINE version, but for some reason the game always crashed during debriefing, after finishing a match.

I noticed some people complaining about mouse problems on PC with multicore CPUs, so I made the polling thread to be ran only on the same core.

I played only training games with the entry level tank, but didn't see any problems with mouse control.

Wine 1.3.16 and the patch
by DirkHeine on Friday March 25th 2011, 5:21
Hi,

Until now wine and WoT have worked fine together for me, but the latest version, 1.3.16, does not seem to be patched correctly. When I apply the patch as described here, in the way it worked with older versions, I get when executing patch -p1 < VTzFtVCT.txt

(Stripping trailing CRs from patch.)

patch unexpectedly ends in middle of line
Hunk #1 succeeded at 491 with fuzz 1.

So Hunk #2 failed and when I try to compile wine after this, I get an error message when it is working on user32 because it can't find files Hunk #2 is supposed to patch. I don't have that error message here right now and I don't have the time to compile wine again to generate it, but I can do that later today if necessary.

Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Aspect ratio causes spinning
by Loki Davison on Friday March 11th 2011, 0:35
If you're using an aspect ratio that isn't 4X3 then you'll constantly slowly spin. Everything works fine if you choose a 4X3 res. My screen's native res, 1920X1200 makes it spin. Any hints on how to change the patch to work for other aspect ratios/resolutions?

Autoupdater WORKS!
by surfing86 on Thursday January 20th 2011, 10:17
Finally I solved the problem!
Using wine 1.3.11 version.
Now i installed with winetricks Internet Explorer 7, msxml3 and wininet.

NOW THE AUTOUPDATER WORKS! GREAT!

Sometimes the 'play' button disappears, but it works.
It downloads and installs the patch correctly.
It downloads also the language packages correctly.

Sometimes it crashes on startup, but relaunch it and it will work fine.

Patch is for wine-1.3.8.

By the way, there's a new WoT test version 0.6.2.5, in which it is possible to change keybindings.

I'll try it on wine tomorrow and will report, will rebinding of the art mode solve problems with it.
If it will - well, then only updater is left.

Ubuntu 10.10
by Doug Stearns on Tuesday November 23rd 2010, 17:20
The patch for this does not work for the current version of wine under Ubuntu 10.10.

I also tried the older wine 1.2 which patched ok, but the game would not work.

Has anyone found a work around or an updated patch for WoT?

Thanks,
Doug

by Bogdan Rudas on Tuesday August 10th 2010, 7:38
Ubuntu 10, wine-1.2 self-built with "mouse patch".
Game version 0.5.2 (0.4.6 is not supported by server now)

I can strat game, login, and perform actions in garage, but in battle mouse hangs either in higet or in lower position. Horizontal moves are OK.

wine output during battle:

mouse problem
by Vasiliy Kurdin on Monday August 9th 2010, 7:44
I have patched wine version 1.2. After the battle is starting I can go to an artillery mode(ctrl+r.click on the map) but the camera goes to the bootom edge of the map, then I can move mouse up a little but it goes back to the bootom again

And I have this lines in stdout:
fixme:win:GetRawInputData PrevY 406, posy 407, diffY 58, snipe 0

wine is 1.2-rc3 downloaded with command:
git clone source.winehq.org/git/wine.git ~/wine-git

game is v0.4.5

the problem is like other say, mouse works in garage but not in game
only left button works there

also, i cant get that env WINE_CURSOR=X command to work
i cant use full env WINE_CURSOR=X wine WoT.exe as i have dual monitors
and when i run it like that it only gives me one resolution for both
and it looks bad, so i use command:
env WINE_CURSOR=X wine explorer /desktop=1,1680x1050 "WoT.exe"
but in that case that env WINE_CURSOR=X doesn't work

sry for that chaotic msg but if i skiped any needed info plz tell me

Some sort of header issue?
by Doug Stearns on Sunday August 1st 2010, 9:06
Basically everything with a label/header lists it's physical designation first, making pretty much everything unrecognizable. Link below to a screen-shot of it at the garage.

Arty mode
by Milan Troller on Tuesday July 20th 2010, 12:34
By the way, Artillery mode works. You can enter it by using the ctrl + Rightclick on map command. The only problem with it is, that you can't get out of it once you are in :)

Mouse patch
by Milan Troller on Monday July 19th 2010, 10:16
I have the mouse patch applied, and it apparently has completely no effect. Mouse works in menus and left button shoots in action, but that's all. Could there be any other requirement for the patch to work?

Mouse not working
by Vanger on Thursday July 1st 2010, 4:22
Not working mouse is the single showstopper.

I guess, it happens because of non-implemented RawInput in wine:
fixme:win:RegisterRawInputDevices (pRawInputDevices=0x32f59c, uiNumDevices=1, cbSize=12) stub!
fixme:win:RegisterRawInputDevices (pRawInputDevices=0x32f59c, uiNumDevices=1, cbSize=12) stub!

I've tried running the game with Windows 2000 settings, also I've tried a patch for similar problem with Hellgate: London - bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=27496 - but with it game did not even start.

Looks like now game gets mouse pointer position only when a button is pressed or released - making camera in battle uncontrollable by mouse.
