Old test results
The test results you have selected are very old and may not represent the current state of Wine.
Selected Test Results (selected in 'Test Results' table below)

What works

- Installation + starting the game (using the fixed .exe mentioned on this page)

- Single player works

What does not

- Performance is unsatisfying. I am running a G80 GPU (which works very well for all games with and without Wine, so my setup isn't to blame), and if I enable "advanced shaders" in the game it is barely playable. Typical FPS at 1152x864 is 40 (which is quite low for this game on my hardware), it goes up to 90 in some cases but also gets below 25 whenever a few characters appear on screen.Disabling the "advanced shaders" option helps very slightly.

What was not tested
- Multiplayer

Additional Comments

According to rating definitions this should be "bronze" because of the performance issue. The game is actually quite playable so rating is Silver.

There's now a native version of JKA.

Lucasarts released the source code for JKA on April 4th, 2013.

The OpenJK project began the day that the JKA source was released. It is recommended to use the native Linux port instead of WINE due to far better stability. The only drawback is that many mods will not work.

There has not been a public release of OpenJK yet, but the source can be compiled.

OpenJK Website and Source: https://github.com/Razish/OpenJK

HOWTO

Newer AMD and NVIDIA drivers have so many OpenGL Extensions that Quake 3 engine based games crash when probing the extensions at game launch.

2 solutions:

Download these fixed binaries (are also nocd patched)

OR

If using the NVIDIA proprietary driver you can start the game prefixed with:

__GL_ExtensionStringVersion=17700

Note to all x86_64  (64 bit) Linux users:

Ensure that your system have installed the OpenGL 32bit compatibility drivers, or else Jedi Academy will not start or work correcty. If you don't know if your system has the 32bit compatibility drivers, ask in your distribution forum or live support chat. (Questions about how this is done will be not answered here, due to the wide range of distributions existing).

A first step can be look at: 3DDriverIssues

Running the game from CD startup does not work.

You need to use the executable in the GameData directory.

Go to the Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy GameData directory and run jamp.exe in WINE. This opens up Jedi Academy Multiplayer. In my case, it is in /home/michael/Lucasarts/Jedi Knight Jedi Academy/GameData. You should see jamp.exe or jasp.exe... choose which you wish to play and be on your way.

It was crashing at startup for me so I used the fixed EXEs above in the comments and it seems to be working well now. Will post results after playing a bit longer.

Mouse and console
by Spongeroberto Squarepantalones on Wednesday March 13th 2013, 16:27
This game used to work fine for me, years back.

Reinstalled it now and having some difficulties (Mint 14 Mate with Wine 1.4 latest stable and also tried with 1.5 latest dev from the PPA):
* I can't seem to call up the console anymore. It used to be SHIFT + ² (I'm on a Belgian keyboard so I have no dedicated tilde key) but the combination does nothing now.
* Mouse movement is extremely finnicky. it feels like the sensitivity keeps changing. Unfortunately this makes the game unplayable.

by winzo on Saturday March 10th 2012, 15:50
If you do not see text in menu, you should replace line

seta r_ext_compress_textures "1"

on

seta r_ext_compress_textures "0"

in files GameData/base/jaconfig.cfg and GameData/base/jampconfig.cfg

enjoy :)

I fixed mouse issue
by Juan Pablo Bouza on Monday March 28th 2011, 0:26
I had noticed that when I turned around the view of the character in the game with the mouse, for some reason it looked choppy.

Well, the reason was the lack of mouse smoothing. I just set the m_filter option to 1 in the jaconfig and that fixed it.

Can't change workspaces or minimize
by Gabriel Benson on Sunday February 27th 2011, 13:26
I'm running JKA in Wine 1.3, Ubuntu 10.10 64bit, and when I play the game I'm unable to switch to other workspaces or minimize the game. This wasn't always the case, as I've been running JKA in Wine on Ubuntu starting from 7.10 and every release thereafter. This is the first time I've had this problem. Any ideas?

Fixed binaries
by Zdeněk Kopřivík on Monday December 6th 2010, 6:07
Where do these fixed binaries came from? I'm looking for a similar solution for JK2. I've got Mobility Radeon HD 4650 with fglrx and JK2 crashes because of too long extensions string.

Any help?

I have almost no experience with programing or computing. I have the Wine that comes with Winebottler on a Mac running OSX 10.6.3. I successfully installed JKA using Wine but when I tried to run it it crashed and the command line stood thus:

JKA Gives only 2FPS
by Snapdog on Thursday April 1st 2010, 3:43
So I installed JKA successfully on Wine 1.01 and it starts up
Then the sound is very shaky and everything moves very slowly even though my settings are at lowest! I've played the same game with highest settings on Windows and it worked just fine. I managed to get into game and do cg_drawpfs and it showed 2. How can this be possible and is there anything i can do?

where do i put this???
by Espryon on Thursday February 4th 2010, 11:01
With newer nvidia drivers, the app will crash early because of a buffer overflow. You must run as

__GL_ExtensionStringVersion=17700 wine jasp.exe

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I have a nvidia 280 vid card and jedi academy just crashes instantly

any advice???

Multiplayer
by Michael on Thursday February 4th 2010, 8:24
For those new to the game and are interested in learning more, or looking for a resource site check out the JA (thejediacademy.net). It has a wiki with lots of info related to the game. If you sign up, you have access to private servers located in USA and Europe. It's fairly active, and doesn't have the drama like public servers do.

The members are more than willing to teach you how to play better. Look it up if interested.

If you are interested in CTF (Capture the flag) visit beyondsuppression.com; it's the most active CTF community.

JKS (Jedi Knight Series) Community resouces. Maps, mods, skins, extras etc; jkseries.net

If you are into competitive team gameplay, visit esl.eu

If you want a realistic movie-like Star Wars experience, download the MovieBattles II mod; a total conversion that is nothing like the original game. www.moviebattles.com

Some public servers I recommend are..

JK Series Euro (public server, not a clan server)
Peace Europark (popular server, but runs JA+ mod)
Peace Fortknox (Duel server)
Terminative³ Public/Home server
Master Cemetery (duel server)
DeutscherDuellServer

there are of course MANY more servers. These are just a few that I play on.

!!Please Note!!: I am not advertising clans/teams/or the like. I am simply trying to spark interest in different areas of the game for new players. I am noticing more and more players online are using Linux. Good sign!

Open Gl and Vm_game
by Miguel on Tuesday December 29th 2009, 16:04
When I run the game, it opens a console and says that Open Gl fails.
I once managed to open the game but still when it was loading the levels, it said Vm_game failed.

What´s wrong?

Mouse lag issue
by Juan Pablo Bouza on Friday November 20th 2009, 6:49
I´m experiencing a kind of mouse lag issue with MOHAA, Jedi Academy and NOLF 1. The games run smoothly while not moving the mouse, but when I look around with it, it seems that fps drop down.
I´m not quite sure if fps drop down, or if the problem is some kind of mouse refresh issue.

Other FPS games work OK. I´m using wine 1.1.32.

Perfect on 1.1.32
by Stuart. on Monday November 2nd 2009, 1:38
Perfect emulation under Wine 1.1.32 with DirectX installed via Winetricks on Ubuntu 8.04 with Intel GM965 chipset. I also set regedit under:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine :

DirectDrawRenderer = opengl
VideoMemorySize = 256 (in mb for my Intel card)

I also patched it to version 1.01 & then applied a no-cd patch which covers ALL versions.

Some screens are white
by Mike on Saturday May 30th 2009, 13:09
It's been a while since I've played Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy, but I'm revisiting both games now and some screens are completely white for me with wine-1.1.22 (last time I played was probably with wine-1.0). With Jedi Outcast I only saw the white screens on some cut scenes and the Lucas Arts animation when you first load the game. I also see the latter in Jedi Academy, but this time I had a problem with the in game screen being white (except for the hud) after I loaded a save. Reloading didn't help, I had to completely exit and load the save before I could play again.

Anyone else? Maybe I'll mess around with my graphics settings.

Not finding CD
by Joel Montgomery on Tuesday May 27th 2008, 21:10
I'm running Wine 1.0-rc2 and when I try to run the install, everything goes well until the app asks me for the second installation CD. I insert the disc and no matter which drive I select to install from, the CD is not recognized by wine, even though my Ubuntu Hardy Heron distro picks it right up.

Errors in wine 0.9.57
by Jonan on Tuesday March 25th 2008, 20:36
I've tried this game with wine 0.9.57 and it works perfect in multiplayer mode, but I wasn't able to play it in single player.
I updated to the 1.01 version and now I'm able to star a single player game, but the program will crash when loading a new mission so I can only do the training part.

Any idea?

Update
by Roelof on Monday March 24th 2008, 6:11
A small update on the game: I played through the whole game again. The bug with the second cult mission posted above(test data) can be avoided by just not doing the mission. For the rest, only the last mission has some really messed up textures, for the rest, the game plays flawlessly.

Nothing happens
by Arho on Tuesday January 29th 2008, 8:12
I have succesfully installed JK2:Jedi Academy from cd, but when
I try to run it, nothing happens. It doesn't even give an error
message, but JK2:Jedi Outcast(the previous part of the game) works.
What should I do?
