Description

Version 1.00

  • In Wine The installer doesn't work, but you can launch the game directly from CD anyway (Saves go into C:\Alife then) The game still has some graphics problems... especially redrawing the screen. On the main screen the Afterlife logo is missing, but pops up as you make you're way through the menues. Ingame, when you move the camera, stuff that is already onscreen and should only be moved to a new location gets not drawn. Only workaround o far: Use the magnifier for moving around, since it redraws the whole screen

What works
The game works absolutely perfectly except for the sound.  I finished the game without trouble.

What does not

Music works fine, but audio often cuts out when a voice is played.  All sounds stop at that point.  Sometimes they come back after 5 to 60 minutes (no joke), but not always.

Workarounds:

  • restart game
  • change Mixer channels = 1 in alife.ini, but you will lose out on all the interesting and important non-music sounds
  • wait for the sound to "jolt" itself back into proper working order.  when this happens, a bunch of queued sounds that got stuck are suddenly played at once.

What was not tested
Everything was tested (it's a relatively simple game : )

Additional Comments

Installation instructions:

1) copy the following files to c:/alife (or where ever you want)
     alife.000
     alife.exe
     alife.ini
     *.asc (if you want the scenarios)
2) edit alife.ini so that it looks like the following:
Resolution     = MAX
Resource file  = ALIFE.000
CD Path        = ALIFE.000
Save games     = C:\ALIFE
Window name    = Afterlife
Mixer channels = 8
Color depth    = Dont Care
Heap size      = 7000
Music stream   = 200000, 150000, 32000
Voice stream   = 65000, 48000, 22000
Installation   = Full

- change C:\ALIFE to where ever you installed the game
- MAX resolution basically means "full screen", whatever your native resolution is (e.g. 1920x1200)
- notice that there is no apostrophe in "Dont Care"

Works perfectly except for screen refresh

It's not too much trouble to use the minimap to get around, though. The 1.1 comments mention trouble with keyboard input, but I never had that problem. What suprised me the most is that the game seems to handle whatever resolution you throw at it. With "Resolution = MAX" in alife.ini, it displays at your standard desktop resolution. My X resolution is 1920x1200, and Afterlife automatically renders at that res! It's nice to have all that space for the interface windows.
