Wine Version1.4-rc6

Description

This Win95 port of the original (and very good) DOS flight sim can be made to run very well indeed under wine.

To start it make sure that your wine command line includes the parameters found in Windows' Start Menu PIF , eg "wine /PROGRAM/_superw.exe DID=. quick_flag=1 GUI". Should the game run to slow or to fast, try using the nice program to launch it like this: "nice -n X wine /PROGRAM/_superw.exe DID=. quick_flag=1 GUI" where the X ranges 0-19

Installation of DirectX fails, but is unnecessary.

It may complain about not being able to find MIDI and other files; if so, copy them to the directory above the superef2000 PROGRAM directory (SEF2000) and it should find them OK.

Set the game resolution to 640x480 in EF2K (press the key to the left of the \"1\" key to access settings) and use Alt-Enter to switch wine full-screen to make it more useable on modern computers. You may even find it runs a little too fast! (because of this, in network games, You need to use some sort of a cpukiller to slow it down, or it won't be fair play)

The test results you have selected are very old and may not represent the current state of Wine.

What works

Everything, but only on older hardware (max is ~1GHz CPU).

The only current problem is that on modern computers the game runs too fast (I'm currently looking for a way to resolve this issue).

What does not
N/A

What was not tested
Multiplayer

Additional Comments

In order to run the game, *Win XP* must be selected as the system version and to run the game directly either use the shortcut created during installation, or this simple code:

cd "~/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files/Digital Image Design/SEF2000/PROGRAM/"
ln -s ../did.dat did.dat
wine _superw.exe DID=. quick_flag=1 GUI

HOWTO launch a network game with EF2000 and wine

First you'll need to set up wine's DirectPlay.
Download this archive:
http://www.thehandofagony.com/alex/dll/dplaydlls-win98se.tar.bz2
unpack it into Wine's windows/system32 directory, then add DLL overrides (native, builtin) for: dplayx, dpnet, dpnhpast and dpwsockx in winecfg.

Second - if You'll be the one being server-side, You'll need to let traffic in trough 47624 and 2300 TCP ports.

To launch the game, select type to be DirectP, Service to be "Internet TCP/IP Connection For DirectPlay", enter Your callsign.

  • If You're the server set the GameServer field to Yes, enter Your game's name, click "Startup" and wait (patiently) till You see "Restart Network" - from this point on other players can connect to You
  • If You're the client - click the Game: field, enter the server's IP OR domain name, select the game name You want to play in and Click "Startup"

After at least two players connect, the server side player will be free to go to Main Menu and select what will be played. The selection is very wide:

  • Quick Combat gives us 3 modes of play: team play / one on one and the base defense
  • Simulation modes to play are: a few of the Free Flights, all Air Combat/Ground Attack/Advanced Simulation and Custom flights
  • Campaign - where the client player plays the wingman role troughout the entire war!
The in game communication is done via the "S" key, displaying a prompt to enter messages while in-flight.

Black screen when running the game?

I had this issue for long.

Turns out that all that was required was to change the windows version for _superw.exe to winxp. It's not exactly clear why, because the game was ported from dos to win95, but it works :)

Data set not found
by Les on Tuesday August 21st 2007, 15:14
It did run direct from the install, but trying to run afterwards I get a dialog telling me it cant find the data set, check the cd is in. I tried copying the data file to the SE2000 dir but still no joy. Am I the only one getting this?

Thanks
