Summary:
  What works:
Installation, Patching, Intro Video, Cinematics, Gameplay
  What was not tested:
    Extended gameplay
  Needed to install properly:
1 - create dvd images of the disk and mount those
    1 - install both 'vcrun2010' and 'd3dx9_36' (using winetricks)
    2 - disable GLSL using: 'winetricks glsl=disabled'
3 - set the correct amount of video memory: "VideoMemorySize"="1536" (set the correct amount for YOUR Video Card)
4 - run 'wine Configurator.exe' to set the correct video settings
5 - run 'wine witcher2.exe' once, to get the launcher working (drag it to an edge of a screen to use the menu)

If you get ' internal error - invalid parameters recieved '
by Mahdi on Wednesday March 27th 2013, 16:51
Hey, I got this error when I tried to start the game first:

' internal error - invalid parameters recieved '

I fixed this problem, with the same way as I fixed steam not running, using this:

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib32/nvidia-current /path/to/witcher2.exe

Use your LD_LIBRARY_PATH here, Hope it helps!

multiple bottlenecks?
by me. on Saturday June 30th 2012, 16:43
After some more testing I figured out how to more than double my fps with a combination of counter-intuitive settings, which makes it almost playable:

1) Set resolution all the way up to the native resolution (in my case 1920x1200 - getting better performance than at 640x480!)
2) Limit number of cores wine can use to 2 (1 isn't enough in my case... and with more than 2 cores there is an even worse decrease in performance. Guess wine gets confused with the games multithreading attempts?).

The currently most recent "Platinum" test result is certainly not helpful and not at all accurate. Perhaps someone could delete it?

Installer Crashes
by Samuel Nelson on Tuesday January 10th 2012, 11:43
Hi, everyone,

I'm using the latest wine from git/svn/whatever-they-use. I just bought The Witcher 2 because I noticed that it finally works in Wine.

Well, something isn't working on my side. When I was using the development version of wine 1.34, the installer would crash. Now that I'm on 1.36, it seems like the installer might actually finish, but the Launcher process still fails.

Here are the gritty details:

1) Wine version wine-1.3.36-223-gc7cc9a1

2) Launcher output (I get no windows popping up)

fixme:thread:GetThreadPreferredUILanguages 52, 0x32f998, 0x32fc14 0x32f9a0
fixme:heap:HeapSetInformation (nil) 1 (nil) 0
fixme:thread:GetThreadPreferredUILanguages 52, 0x32edc8, 0x32f044 0x32edd0

3) Installer output:

err:richedit:ReadStyleSheet skipping optional destination
err:richedit:ReadStyleSheet skipping optional destination
err:richedit:ReadStyleSheet skipping optional destination
err:richedit:ReadStyleSheet skipping optional destination

err:setupapi:do_file_copyW Unsupported style(s) 0x144
err:setupapi:do_file_copyW Unsupported style(s) 0x144
(the above is repeated at least 100 times)

I'm going to try a couple more times, but if anyone has any hints, I'd really appreciate it.

-Sam

Today I've upgraded kernel to 3.0.6 and wine to 35. Everything works fine. Have you tried reinstalling?

Sound corruption & Tutorial not loading.
by Lukas Schneiderbauer on Saturday December 24th 2011, 3:03
Hi,

I run The Witcher 2 (patch 2.0) on wine 1.3.35, amd64 gentoo linux. The intro videos and menu are working as expected, but the sound is very often awfully corrupted. I also tried wine version 1.3.34, but it's the same.

Also, when trying to start the tutorial, the loading screen "loads" forever (the loading-indicator is rotating though).

Any suggestions to resolve this?

Cheers, Lukas.

New patch 2.1
by Bully Bull on Wednesday November 23rd 2011, 7:12
Don't be a fool and update from 2.0 to 2.1! :(
With version 2.0 everything is ok but the new
2.1 patch breaks the game because it will install
.NET 4.0 (and the game need .NET 4.0 but that doesn't
work)
with version 2.0 the game can be rated "Gold"
with version 2.1 the game must be rated "Garbage"

Transparent PC/NPCs
by cluthz on Friday September 30th 2011, 11:27
The game installs fine and updated to 2.0.
One huge problem is that Geralt and other NPC are invisible.
I can only see the swords on the back.

I've tried with 1.3.9, 1.3.23, 1.3.23 and 1.3.29 (had to patch to get 1.3.29 to run)

Link to how it looks.

I'm using mac osx 10.6.8 and have a geforce GTX 285 and 6GB RAM, so I meet the system reqs easily

Graphics and performance
by Florian R. A. Angermeier on Tuesday June 21st 2011, 12:33
I have tested around with my NVidia graphics card/drivers.

The open source driver (nouveau) does not work. You have to install the proprietary driver from NVidia in order to play. It looks like there are/is (a) problem(s) with the framebuffer. I will check this in the future. Anyone you have succeeded?

The performance is very poor even with the lowest settings. But this is a known problem with Wine.

DVD change problem - possible workaround
by Florian R. A. Angermeier on Tuesday June 14th 2011, 14:01
I think I have found a possible workaround for the DVD change problem:

In Ubuntu use sudo instead. I am using Fedora and have to do it as root.

Unmounts the DVD:
# umount /media/TW2_EFIGS_Disc1

- Change the disc

Mount the new disc manually into /media/cdrom:
# mkdir /media/cdrom
# mount /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom

- Goto the Wine Configuration (tab Drives)
- Add a new drive e.g. D: (button Add...)
- Bind it to the /media/cdrom directory (text box Path:)

- Probably reopen the select disc dialog (button Cancel, button Browse...)
- Select drive D:
- Open it

Now it copies the game files like normal but very slow (takes some time but does something for sure ;))

Hope this helps.

'The Witcher 2' running on a 64-bit OS also works fine
by David on Sunday June 5th 2011, 7:34
To bad there is no 'edit comment' options, so here it goes:

I just wanted to add, that I tested using a 64-bit operating system (Ubuntu 11.04 Desktop 64-bit, to be precise). In other words, it should NOT be a problem to run 'The Witcher 2' on a 64-bit OS ;)

I also made some typos, so in case you don't know what I meant, it should be:

incorrect: 3 - set the amount correct amount of video memory
correct: 3 - set the correct amount of video memory

incorrect: for example when you live an European country
correct: for example when you live in a European country

incorrect: but replacing the dvd does and pointing it to the correct device doesn't help

Getting 'The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings (PC-DVD)' to Work!
by David on Sunday June 5th 2011, 7:10
Since my test result still isn't approved yet, and I just want to help anyone who's struggling with this game, I thought I'll already share my 'Additional Content' part of my test result.

Registry settings
by doctordruidphd on Monday May 30th 2011, 8:54
I cannot get the game to run past the "new game" screen. I have 64-bit, so there may be an ia32libs problem on top of the rest. Will someone who has this running please post their settings in HKCU>Software>Wine>Direct3D ? Thanks.

further testing
by doctordruidphd on Saturday May 28th 2011, 21:39
1. The problem with installation is related to the more general problem of reading the DVDs, which occurs in Windows as well. It was solved by copying the files on the DVDs to a memory stick (will require about 16gb) on a computer with an older DVD drive, then copying them back to the hard disk, and installing from there. This is the procedure CDPR recommends.

2. The installation worked, also needed to install directX and vcredist_x86.exe from dvd2. Also install patch 1.1 from the Witcher2 website, this removes the copy protection, activation requirements, etc. Made the change to UseGLSL, didn't work. Copied over my registry settings for directX from The Witcher . I get as far as starting a new game, then the initial movies play, but only on a white screen. So still no game >> garbage.
