What works
Eventually with the Wine version > 1.3.30 all previous errors and bugs seems to vanish... From now on every Witcher's fan is able to play this wonderful game almost painlessly and without all those problems threatening Linux users for some time...
Game's performance is quite good and it seems constantly improving. There is no need to disable GLSL shaders. However, doing this clearly improves Witcher's 2 performance and makes it much more playable. I can play rather fluently on moderate details settings on a computer equipped with a Intel 9300 Quad Core processor, 2 GBs of RAM and nVidia GeForce GTS 450 graphic card.
There are two changes need to be done in a stock wine configuration before one starts to play. You have to run the following command:
winetricks vcrun2010 d3dx9_36
It is also recommended to disable GLSL shaders with a command:
winetricks glsl=disabled
That's all.
There are no problems with a clipping sound nor with any mysterious whitescreens.
I'm using the most up-to-date version of the game: 2.0. Unfortunately, I have no idea, if the installer works or not. That is because I did not have install Witcher's 2 recently...
What does not
Everything works fine with two modifications described in the above paragraph.
multiple bottlenecks?
by me. on Saturday June 30th 2012, 16:43
After some more testing I figured out how to more than double my fps with a combination of counter-intuitive settings, which makes it almost playable:
1) Set resolution all the way up to the native resolution (in my case 1920x1200 - getting better performance than at 640x480!)
2) Limit number of cores wine can use to 2 (1 isn't enough in my case... and with more than 2 cores there is an even worse decrease in performance. Guess wine gets confused with the games multithreading attempts?).
Witcher 2 wont run
by Dan on Thursday March 15th 2012, 7:33
Hi i wanted to play on my Witcher 2.
But after instaling launcher.exe doesnt react. I updated game with all updates from website. So i tried runing it with command and i got alot of errors about missing dll files or faild to read dll. So i downloaded microsoft visual c++ for wine, downloaded missing dll files. And yet i get this:

Installer Crashes
by Samuel Nelson on Tuesday January 10th 2012, 11:43
Hi, everyone,
I'm using the latest wine from git/svn/whatever-they-use. I just bought The Witcher 2 because I noticed that it finally works in Wine.
Well, something isn't working on my side. When I was using the development version of wine 1.34, the installer would crash. Now that I'm on 1.36, it seems like the installer might actually finish, but the Launcher process still fails.

Sound corruption & Tutorial not loading.
by Lukas Schneiderbauer on Saturday December 24th 2011, 3:03
Hi,
I run The Witcher 2 (patch 2.0) on wine 1.3.35, amd64 gentoo linux. The intro videos and menu are working as expected, but the sound is very often awfully corrupted. I also tried wine version 1.3.34, but it's the same.
Also, when trying to start the tutorial, the loading screen "loads" forever (the loading-indicator is rotating though).
New patch 2.1
by Bully Bull on Wednesday November 23rd 2011, 7:12
Don't be a fool and update from 2.0 to 2.1! :(
With version 2.0 everything is ok but the new
2.1 patch breaks the game because it will install
.NET 4.0 (and the game need .NET 4.0 but that doesn't
work)
with version 2.0 the game can be rated "Gold"
with version 2.1 the game must be rated "Garbage"
install second dvd
by f van egmond on Saturday June 25th 2011, 10:08
I noticed that when you put the second dvd in that it only showed E as drive letter and not E: by just adding : it solved the problem for me installing the second dvd
Graphics and performance
by Florian R. A. Angermeier on Tuesday June 21st 2011, 12:33
I have tested around with my NVidia graphics card/drivers.
The open source driver (nouveau) does not work. You have to install the proprietary driver from NVidia in order to play. It looks like there are/is (a) problem(s) with the framebuffer. I will check this in the future. Anyone you have succeeded?
The performance is very poor even with the lowest settings. But this is a known problem with Wine.
I have Phenom II 970 3.5Ghz, GTX 570, 8Gb ram ,60gb SSD
Ubuntu 10.10 64bit wine 1.3.21
Witcher 2 have VERY LOW FPS on open areas , even if i set minimal settings . my resolution 1920x1080. Game unplayable like Two worlds II (Same problem)
How to fix FPS?
Game requires SLI 2xGTX 580 or more to run normal FPS??

'The Witcher 2' running on a 64-bit OS also works fine
by David on Sunday June 5th 2011, 7:34
To bad there is no 'edit comment' options, so here it goes:
I just wanted to add, that I tested using a 64-bit operating system (Ubuntu 11.04 Desktop 64-bit, to be precise). In other words, it should NOT be a problem to run 'The Witcher 2' on a 64-bit OS ;)
I also made some typos, so in case you don't know what I meant, it should be:
incorrect: 3 - set the amount correct amount of video memory
correct: 3 - set the correct amount of video memory
incorrect: for example when you live an European country
correct: for example when you live in a European country
incorrect: but replacing the dvd does and pointing it to the correct device doesn't help
correct: but replacing the dvd and pointing it to the correct device doesn't help
Getting 'The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings (PC-DVD)' to Work!
by David on Sunday June 5th 2011, 7:10
Since my test result still isn't approved yet, and I just want to help anyone who's struggling with this game, I thought I'll already share my 'Additional Content' part of my test result.
It contains a helpful (atleast I hope it is ;)) problem/solution guide and summary of it:)
Here it is:
Summary:
What works:
Installation, Patching, Intro Video, Cinematics, Gameplay
What was not tested:
Extended gameplay
Needed to install properly:
1 - create dvd images of the disk and mount those
1 - install both 'vcrun2010' and 'd3dx9_36' (using winetricks)
2 - disable GLSL using: 'winetricks glsl=disabled'
3 - set the amount correct amount of video memory: "VideoMemorySize"="1536" (set the correct amount for YOUR Video Card)
4 - run 'wine Configurator.exe' to set the correct video settings
5 - run 'wine witcher2.exe' once, to get the launcher working (drag it to an edge of a screen to use the menu)
Test system used:
Qosmio X500-15F gaming laptop:
video card: NVIDIA GTX 460M - 1536MB
memory: 8GB SO-DIMM DDR3-1333
cpu: Intel i7-2630QM Quad Core @2.00Ghz
Extended Problem/Solution Guide:
(Windows partition or VM => NOT NEEDED, all run on Ubuntu)
Assumptions:
you use the following wine prefix:
WINEPREFIX="~/wineprefixes/TheWitcher2"
problem:
half way through the installation it asks for dvd 2, but replacing the dvd does and pointing it to the correct device doesn't help
solution:
create an Image of both DVD disks(for example using dd) and mount those:
1 - insert dvd1
2 - sudo umount /media/TW2_EFIS_Disc1
3 - sudo dd if=/dev/cdrom of=~/thewitcher2_dvd1.iso bs=1M
4 - wait until the command completes, and then type 'eject'
5 - insert dvd2
6 - sudo umount /media/TW2_EFIS_Disc2
7 - sudo dd if=/dev/cdrom of=~/thewitcher2_dvd2.iso bs=1M
8 - wait until the command completes, and then type 'eject'
9 - sudo mkdir /media/disk1 /media/disk2
10 - sudo mount -o loop ~/thewitcher2_dvd1.iso /media/disk1
11 - sudo mount -o loop ~/thewitcher2_dvd2.iso /media/disk2
12 - cd /media/disk1
13 - wine setup.exe
14 - when asked to insert dvd 2, just give the new path name 'z:\\media\\disk2' (as in replacing the '1' with '2')
problem:
err:module:import_dll Library mfc100u.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\Program Files\\The Witcher 2\\Launcher.exe") not found
solution:
winetricks vcrun2010
problem:
"Installed game version is invalid or incomplete"
solution:
make sure you choose the correct one, for example when you live an European country, other then Germany, Switzerland or Austria, choose the ROW patch, NOT the International one
problem:
"cannot open launcher process"
solution:
use: winedbg (then type 'cont'+ ENTER to start the process
problem:
black screen
solution:
add:
"VideoMemorySize"="1536"
(set the correct amount for YOUR Video Card)
to:
~/wineprefixes/user.reg

Registry settings
by doctordruidphd on Monday May 30th 2011, 8:54
I cannot get the game to run past the "new game" screen. I have 64-bit, so there may be an ia32libs problem on top of the rest. Will someone who has this running please post their settings in HKCU>Software>Wine>Direct3D ? Thanks.
further testing
by doctordruidphd on Saturday May 28th 2011, 21:39
1. The problem with installation is related to the more general problem of reading the DVDs, which occurs in Windows as well. It was solved by copying the files on the DVDs to a memory stick (will require about 16gb) on a computer with an older DVD drive, then copying them back to the hard disk, and installing from there. This is the procedure CDPR recommends.
2. The installation worked, also needed to install directX and vcredist_x86.exe from dvd2. Also install patch 1.1 from the Witcher2 website, this removes the copy protection, activation requirements, etc. Made the change to UseGLSL, didn't work. Copied over my registry settings for directX from The Witcher . I get as far as starting a new game, then the initial movies play, but only on a white screen. So still no game >> garbage.
