What works
After doing the libfontconfig workaround described in Additional Comments, it runs and is "playable".

What does not
MIDI music does not play. The terminal output provided below contains some information that appears directly related to this problem.

All object textures are completely black, possibly not even loaded. This includes the player craft, asteroids, flying saucers, bullets, explosions, most of the special ability effects, and text overlays. The spawn/hyperspace effect, background, lives indicator, and GUI are just about the only things that appear with normal or mostly normal textures. The background can be edited or replaced to make the objects more visible and easier to play, but that's obviously not a desirable workaround.

The background shows in 16 colors (or close to it) when it should be 256 colors.

What was not tested

  • Network play

Additional Comments

Natty has a regression in libfontconfig which causes some applications to crash at launch in Wine. The 32-bit lib needs to be replaced with the Maverick version.
Maverick package: http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/libs/libfontconfig1
More info (where I found the solution): http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1752736

I've also noticed that the sounds will cut out shortly after they start playing or they are delayed (seems to be waiting for another sound to stop). This is probably related to the number of audio channels as indicated in the terminal output.

After replacing libfontconfig and installing on a clean prefix, I ran it in terminal and played for about a minute and exited. Here's the output:
