Additional Comments
This installation took numerous attempts and many hours, but eventually after a tweaking about with wine and modding some of the game files got this working smoothly. The game has some really nice postprocess effects such as (SSAO) AmbientOcclusion, Bloom, MotionBlur and Refraction but these can really effect performance negatively.
Installed Windows Components:
Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0, Microsoft DirectX Redistributable, Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 and Windows Media Format 11 Runtime.
Graphic Settings & PostProcessing Mods:
Manually edit "Video.scr" (to adjust setting not accessible ingame)
Manually edit variables to disable PostProcess effects (SSAO)AmbientOcclusion, Bloom, MotionBlur and Refraction.

A test with the new Nvidia driver.
by Jurgen Meijer on Wednesday May 23rd 2012, 18:37
I have experienced some problems with this game in the past but i can confirm i no longer have lighting problems which occured in act 2 the Hotel where everything was dark while entering. After installing the new Nvidia 295.53 driver.
The game actually runs better now, the tweak tool of DI works good aswell and shaders look visually better i think (for openGL terms)
My config:
AMD X2
4GB memory
Nvidia GTX 285
Dead Island 1.3 (Steam up to date version).
I had some troubles (because i have a second monitor) that DI could not launch the window. THis was caused by twinview eventually the game worked when setting up 2 seperate x-windows (for my tv and one for my normal monitor) But launching the game while in that mode drastically dropped preformance in DI. So my tip is to disable 2nd monitor while playing this game.

Black Screen + No Audio
by DanIsTheMan on Sunday October 2nd 2011, 6:39
i done exactly everything both Gold results have done and i seem to only get a Black Screen with no audio when starting up the game. I know that the audio problem can be fixed by changing dsound to builtin but as for video, i dont know how to fix this problem.
I am using a Legit Retail copy of the game that requires to be installed through steam. i have installed steam properly so that it wont crash on start uo. i have even done all the DllOverrides and Winesettings but that makes no difference to the video not working.
I am using a 1.3.29 engine from Wineskin 8 (WS8)
And i am running the game on a:
I Know this game DOES play on my mac as i made a 1.3.9 CXEx Carbon port of this game and it does play! it has 2 issues though, which are saving problems and there is a shadow issue big which makes it almost unplayable.
