What works
The downloader doesn't run normally on Wine. I worked around this by running it in VirtualBox under WinXP, but it's a Pando installer and should also work OK by installing vcrun2008 using winetricks and starting it with the environment variable GC_DONT_GC=1 set. If you do the latter, I recommend running the downloader on a prefix of its own, then closing the installer when it starts it and re-running the real installer on a clean prefix. Pando Media Booster is nasty. :-)
Once downloaded, the installer works, but the "nexon game manager" it starts when finished hangs. Just kill the nexon game manager's process (ps aux | grep -i nexon) and the installer itself will still complete successfully. Or just kill the installer - it's done anyway. Once the game is installed, change the shortcut to point to AtlanticaRun.exe instead of Atlantica.url, since we can't start the game from the browser the way Windows users can. :-) (If you install using PlayOnLinux/PlayOnMac, have it create its shortcut to AtlanticaRun.exe).
The Launcher (AtlanticaRun.exe) works, even on a clean prefix, but doesn't display the html correctly in the windows, so you don't get to see the patch notes and/or ads. It still patches and runs the game correctly.
The game itself runs great (usually, see "what does not work" below), except for an issue that I (and some other people) have where some icons don't show up correctly. This seems to affect icons that are added or changed in patches, and also affects vmware and virtualbox users, so it may be an issue with opengl and the way AO displays those particular icons. The long and the short of it is that you should re-install AO whenever a new installer appears in order to (hopefully) fix your icons.
What does not
Summary:
The downloader doesn't work, but there are multiple workarounds. You just need the installer it downloads, nothing more. If I can get permission to do so, I may host an installer somewhere.
Some people have issues with the "secondary password" registration dialog that the game pops up the first time you attempt to log in causing the game to either hang or crash outright. Apparently, this only affects the registration dialog, and once you've registered a "secondary password" the entry dialog for entering it works fine. If you have this issue on a recent version of wine, the output of lspci might actually be useful in determining what hardware configurations cause the problem. You can usually work around this by creating your password on a windows machine.
Some icons aren't displayed. This is a minor defect and doesn't make the game unplayable, but it can be annoying when you're trying to manage your inventory and can only tell something is in a particular spot by hovering over it.
What was not tested
I haven't tested PvP yet, but watching PvP matches works fine, so I'm going to assume that actually participating in them will also work. Other than that, I simply haven't gone far enough in this wonderful game to test "everything" yet, so I'll make another report if something comes up.
Additional Comments
Note the version. Tested versions 1.5.15-1.5.20. 1.5.18 and newer versions freeze the graphics when you rotate the camera on the field, so I'll be making a regression report soonish.
Pando Media Booster (PMB) based installers don't work (Atlantica Online, League of Legends, LotRO) (prepending GC_DONT_GC=1 to the command line works around)

by Thorvald on Wednesday May 16th 2012, 7:34
I got the downloader from atlantica.nexon.net/ and pressed download and then keep (im using Chromium) and then i went into the "Dowloads" directory where the stuff i download usually ends up. i found the downloader, right-clicked it, chose open with and then wine. Now instead of the downloader popping up and installing the game i get two error messages

Cant launch the game
by Marezz on Saturday May 7th 2011, 17:23
Im unable to launch the game using the browser since I cant install the Nexon Game Manager, so I tried to launch it from the game folder using AtlanticaRun.exe and I get an error saying that Atlantica is currently under maintenance. Please try later. I checked their website, the servers were online, there was no maintenance. Current game version [30434]
~/Downloads/Games/AtlanticaOnline $ ls -sh
total 3.4M
1.7M AtlanticaDownloaderLiteV21410.exe
1.7M AtlanticaDownloaderVer21505.exe
Despite both being identical size (1749176) they have different md5sum.
If i try running one of the 1.7 meg files i get:
$ wine AtlanticaDownloaderVer21505.exe
err:seh:setup_exception_record stack overflow 1024 bytes in thread 0024 eip 7ef732c2 esp 00c50f30 stack 0xc50000-0xc51000-0xe50000

Can't log in
by James on Monday January 25th 2010, 23:09
Hi, I've got the game started correctly but at the login screen when I enter my account information, it just hangs at "Connecting to the login server". Is there anything I'm missing?
