game requires directx package shipped with the game (this will also fix sound issues).
to run the skyrim launcher, you need to install vcrun2008 via winetricks

Skyrim runs very well, but performance is quite a bit lower than on windows;
especially reflections seem to cause a major performance hit
Also note that this game will perform worse the more mods you have installed!

Audio

If sound doesn’t work, installing DirectX10 (from directory of game) helps atleast here.

No other dll overrides present, *though* I do have maybe tons of those dlls at system32 or wherever they are installed to.

Pulseaudio is reported to need to run the in windows xp mode, changeable with winecfg or winetricks.

Some people are saying installing xact is required to get audio working. I haven’t confirmed this one myself.

Crashes, texture bugs etc..

These happens for Windows users too, so quite likely bugs in actual game. Some may not, but it’s mostly crashes about out of memory or such specific Wine issues, maybe. Or maybe the game just leaks. Anyway, until few patches (now the version is 1.1.22 or similar) are out, correctly deducing Wine bugs is a bit hard.

Running out of memory

This is bizarre.

So Skyrim runs fine with the current mod list I have in Windows. Ultra quality, few extra textures, SKSE etc. I also previously ran through Skyrim on an older machine last year.

My current machine has an Nvidia 660Ti with 2GB of VRAM and 16GB of DDR3. And yet Skyrim runs out of memory, producing black voids in place of textures and eventually crashes.

The same issue is not occurring on Windows so I'm sure this is not a physical memory problem and something happening within Wine. My only guess is that somehow Wine is not properly allowing Skyrim to be large address aware, but I'm not sure why that'd be the case. With htop running on another display, I can see that I'm not exceeding beyond 4GB of total system memory usage.

This is on Arch Linux 64bit running Wine 1.6-rc2. Skyrim is installed in a 32bit wineprefix however I have also tested it in a 64bit one. Because it's Steam, this is the latest version of Skyrim.

It is definitely running out of memory. Output from Skyrim is flooded by GL_OUT_OF_MEMORY errors. But yeah, that makes no sense because of my aforementioned _plethora_ of available memory.

I'm not using a swap at the moment. But I suppose at a push I could create a swapfile and see if that alleviates the problem somehow.

Mouse Issues

I was having a mouse issue in 1.5.20 (mouse was getting stuck when left clicking while sprinting, and it was really annoying to press random keys in hopes that it would fix it). I have it in PlayOnLinux, so I updated to 1.6-rc1. Now it has no problems. If you have this problem, just upgrade (I'm not exactly sure where the fix occurred, but 1.6 works great so far)

sluggish game/npc responses

graphics and sound working

having issues with game events being _painfully_ slow.

e.g. after character creation, events leading to *SPOILER*SPOILER*SPOILER* guy getting beheaded and dragon roaring/arriving *ENDSPOILER*ENDSPOILER*ENDSPOILER* might be 2-5 minutes between each npc 'action'.

any ideas what might be causing this?

Hey, has anyone tried the new DLC with Wine? I'm having an issue trying to run it (the main menu never appears, the game hangs there until killed, with the Dragon Emblem in the back of the screen).

Using Wine 1.5.26, the game runs 100 or so mods without problem. The issue appears when activating Dragonborn and any mod that needs it to run (like the latest version of T3nd0's Skyre). :)

sound and skyrim

Using Peppermint 3 64bit
Nvidia GTX560M

For the sound, I tried:
xact
win7/winxp
alsa/pulseaudio/oss
directx10 install

and nothing worked, until I changed to a 32bit wine prefix. Then it is perfect (using alsa)

Also, with recent nvidia drivers, I get errors such as
Broken NVIDIA RandR detected, falling back to RandR 1.0.
when trying to run anything in wine. Reverting to 295.40 fixes this.

Hopefully this can help someone! I shall now go and play this game :)

TESV.exe becomes a Zombie process instead of quitting.

Have any on you had the problem where Skyrim crashes on exit (becomes a zombie process)?

I've noticed this happens with other wine processes too.
I'm using the following script to remedy this:

Crash on "Play" from Launch Screen

Playonlinux > Steam > Skyrim, I click play in steam, the skyrim launcher window loads. Then I click play in the launcher window and... nothing. No error message, no popup, just nothing.

This is what shows in the POL log:

On wine 1.5.16 x64 (via playonlinux) with pulseaudio was needed to use the xact for sound. I'm not sure about the directx10, because I've installed them also but it didn't work until the xact.

Get 'Unredirect Full Screen'

AMD Athlon II X3 445
4GB RAM

Runs pretty well on my system except for busy periods of play where it slows down to a still playable frame rate. That's on settings between Low/Medium.

I'm using about 5 mods so far, as well as the recently released Ubuntu update--'Unredirect Full Screen Windows'--which basically turns off the Window Manager's (ie Unity) 3D effects while a game/app is in full-screen. This should give anyone using Ubuntu's Unity better FPS. I only got the game since that update was released so I don't know the before and after but I have tried another game (Limbo) on my laptop before and after and the difference was incredible! It went from choppy to super smooth. The update is for Ubuntu 12.10 & 12.04 I believe.

Horrible stuttering in Skyrim with recent versions of Wine

Twice now I've tried upgrading my Wine version from 1.5.5. Once I did a clean install of Linux Mint, compiled 1.5.18 from source and installed Skyrim. I noticed very bad stuttering (texture swapping?) in Skyrim. More recently I tried cloning the drive with my 1.5.5 install. With 1.5.5 installed, the new drive ran Skyrim with great fluidity, though it had some funky shadow issues. I then compiled and upgraded to 1.5.21. I encountered the same stuttering issue I had with 1.5.18. I've tried GLSL on and off, disabling swap entirely and renicing TESV.exe by -20. Nothing so far has eliminated the stuttering.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this very annoying problem?

Multi Monitor mouse not fully warping

I've got 2 monitors on my system and when I play skyrim in full screen mode, the mouse warps fine to the left, up and down but it only goes to the right so far before it starts to bounce. If I keep going right it will eventually turn a degree at a time but it's quicker to turn left. Mouse refuses to warp when in windowed mode and to do anything I have to chase the cursor round the window a few times. Turning off one of the monitors does still results in the same problem.

mouseWarp is set to force
Capture mouse in full screen is checked in winecfg.

I've got steam installed in POL but running the game files direct still results in the same problem.

I have a Nvidia GTX570 card, Mint 13 and wine 1.5.20

No cursor during game play, incomplete menus?

Hello all!

I'm running Arch x86_64, I believe Wine 1.5.20. Skyrim with Steam, Steam works fine with the invisible text fix.

I'm having some weird issues playing Skyrim--the video is usually fine (it occasionally gets a bit glitchy, I can only really describe it as glare), the sound is fine, loading is all fine, but the problems are that a.) there is no mouse cursor and b.) I believe the menus load incompletely--the esc menu in gameplay doesn't have a background, nor any of the toggle buttons, and probably other menus are incomplete as well. Anyway, so the obvious result of this is that I can't even really create a character, change any in-game settings, &c.

I should note that Skyrim does /recognise/ mouse input--I can look around just fine.

I have an NVIDIA Optimus setup--I'm using bumblebee/primus for loading steam (like > primusrun wine /path/to/Steam.exe)--I was considering the possibility that this is a graphics card problem, but I honestly haven't the faintest idea, and I've spent ages looking for duplicate cases, but the most I can find is the occasional "No cursor? Turn off XBox360 Controller in in-game menu", which I can't try because, well, I have no cursor and the menus aren't really functioning properly.

Sorry this is so long:
tl;dr: Mouse is recognised, but no cursor shows up, and menus are incomplete--no background, no toggle buttons, navigatable with esc and arrow keys but otherwise unusable.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd be really grateful to hear them!

Running Performance Mods

Hey all, when running this on a Macbook Pro 15" (quad core i5, Radeon 6750M), it runs okay. Very playable, especially when the draw distances are brought down.

I've done some reading around and there is a very promising mod that claims to increase FPS. I want to give it a try: skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/15123

The problem is is that it wants me to put in a direct x file into Skyrim, called d3d9.dll. Then when you load up the game, it should have a pop up saying that the mod is working. Problem is, I can't get this to run up.

Is Wine doing something that I don't know about by not even looking for the file in the first place? Do I need to give it explicit instructions first?

Would appreciate any help.

Game runs fine for a couple minutes, then sudden, crippling lag

I'm running into an issue where the game will run flawlessly when just starting, smooth as butter. But after anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes after starting, the framerate drops to 1 frame every 3 seconds, or something excrutiating, that requires me to kill the game.

Anyone else run into this, know of a fix?

Launcher Crashes

Hi there,
I tried following a ton of different methods from here to get Skyrim to work.

From Steam, when I click "play" for skyrim, the launcher pops up but Wine crashes - only for "skyrimlauncher,exe". Steam itself doesn't crash or anything.


I've installed a lot of DLL's from various suggestions related to other persons issues, except dotnets after 1.1 wouldn't work...but don't see that being the issue here.

Not sure what to do, I recently updated to Mint 13 MATE from Mint 10 (Here I didn't have to do a thing, it really just worked).

Any help appreciated!

Texture artifacting

For I experience some strange texture artifacting[1] and I am not completely sure whether it is a faulty graphics card or a wine/driver/game/etc. bug I wanted to ask if somebody else sees similar things.

The computer that produces the issue has a NVIDIA Geforce GTX 670 (an ASUS one that runs on reference clocks, i.e. no factory overclocking that could explain it).
I tried wine 1.5.14 (the Ubuntu repository one), wine 1.5.9 (self-compiled with only the Ubuntu ptrace patch), the NVIDIA driver versions 304.51 and 295.33. Furthermore I tried 32- and 64-bit prefixes (although I did no clean install in 64-bit; I only created the prefix and copied the steam folder). The only thing that appears to have influence is the shadow detail setting where lower settings seem to reduce the frequency of the artifacts.
Unigine Heaven 3.0 does not seem to produce any similar issues. I also do not have a windows to check if the artifacts appear there, too.
The operating system used is Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit.

Mouse trouble

If using native dinput8 the mouse cursor will not respond quickly to updates - it'll feel sluggish, dragging around corners like a drunk rather than responding promptly to mouse updates.

Mass Effect requires the dinput8 override, so if this happens to you and disabling mouse acceleration in SkyrimPrefs.ini has no discernable effect, this might be the reason.

i have crashes in inventory
have 300 items, with navigate only to them i get crash every 15-20seconds of active using = scrolling or etc...

im annoy restart and restarting this buggy game

i remove all addons and mods but crashes still exists

versian russian, without or with dawnguard = unchanged.
english steam version have a same bug .

Skyrim just sits on loading screen and does nothing

I'm not getting a crash, but whenever I start the game it just sits at the loading screen and doesn't do anything. Animations are still playing (smoke in the background, etc) but it never loads, just sits there and plays music.

If anyone has run into this I'd love to find a solution.

PS: I'm not sure if I'm able to run it from the command line because of the way that the launcher intercepts executing TESV.exe directly -- if anyone knows of a way of launching TESV.exe directly without invoking the launcher that would be great!

On launch, Wine encounters serious error

I installed Steam onto my MacBook Air via Wineskin (not sure which version, I think it was the latest one) and downloaded Skyrim (which I had already bought on steam for my pc) from there. I pressed play and the skyrim launcher came up, but when I pressed play it said there was a serious error. SkyrimLauncher.exe crashes, nothing solved it...

I'm posting here because Steam/Bethesda forums don't feel like trying to help Linux users...

Updated everything recently, ArchLinux/KDE, wine etc.
Have previously been able to play Skyrim without issue (same as WoW, EVE, etc).

Hadn't used this computer in 3 months til now. With WINE update, Steam had text issue which has a workaround that works:
nice -n 19 wine "C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -no-dwrite

This made Steam usable and I was able to update Skyrim game. I didn't try to play prior to updating. Now, SkyrimLauncher.exe crashes every single time, whether or not I use the Steam text workaround.

Have installed previously (which allowed flawless play):
all necessary winetricks
msvcr90

I do NOT have, that I can recall, any INI file tweaks.

I actually deleted all local files and reinstalled overnight, which means it reinstalled from Cloud. Maybe I need a complete fresh install?...

Anyway, I reviewed the konsole output and some things stood out, but I have no idea if these are related to the issues:

Blank window in Fedora with wine 1.5.8

I was able to run Skyrim on my PC using ubuntu 11.10. Now, using Fedora 17, I am having a strange issue that I cannot find reported anywhere else.

Steam is installed, HL and HL2 and all their variants run great.

When I launch Skyrim from Steam, I am presented with the SkyrimLauncher, when I launch the game from here, the window presented is full of garbage (it is a mishmash of things previously drawn on the screen). The odd part is that the audio kicks in, and I can even press enter, start a new game, and hear all the sounds associated, but I never get any video output in the window. It stays a static bunch of garbage.

The results are the same with the nouveau drivers and the proprietary nvidia drivers. I have tried with GLSL disabled and OffscreenRendering set to backbuffer with no difference noticed.

This is a the output of launching steam, selecting Skyrim, and sitting at the main menu listening to the chanting music, then killing Skyrim and closing steam.

Utilization of dual-core processor and performance issue

I experienced playing Skyrim under Wine 1.5.5 on a system with
a dual-core processor (Athlon64 x2 3GHz) and the game appears
to run slowly enough because the processor power is utilized
only by one half. Measuring with "top" utility shows that both
cores are loaded but the load of each core is 30%-70% with
the total value always about 100% (must be 200% for dual-core).
I see also that processes other than "TESV.exe" consume less
than 10% of CPU time. When I restrict "TESV.exe" to the single
core, this core is loaded by 90%-100% and the game runs with
the same speed. So, I think that "TESV.exe" runs multi-threaded
but its threads do not run simultaneously and it is an effect
of Bug#11674.

It is interesting, on quad-core processors the total utilization
of CPU time by Skyrim with Wine is 100% or 200% (or 400%) ?

Also I found a simple way to improve performance slightly.
If I manually renice the process "TESV.exe" to -20, the number
of frames per second increases by 10% in some areas.

I installed the winetricks d3dx9_42, vcrun2008, and xact, and removed the intro video as detailed, but Skyrim still doesn't work. I hit "play" in Steam, and it opens up a window about Microsoft VC Redist Package not working, or something. when I hit "okay", though, the game launches anyway. I then select "play" from the small window that appears, and Skyrim opens up in (almost) full screen. However, that's as far as it gets. I've lit it sit there for a while, but I just keep staring at the metal dragon emblem. Can I get some help here?

I am using a Mac and winebottler. Right now, I'm just using Wine for Steam and Half-Life.

Invalid parameters

So, I had this game running perfectly in Ubuntu 11.10, i think wine was at version 1.3x. That system went down on me for some reason and so I spent a little time in Debian where I couldn't get very much in the way of wine to work well. I'm now running Ubuntu 12.04rc and wine version 1.4. I disabled pulseaudio and so my system is running well for this game, but whenever I try to run it, I get a little box that tells me "Internal errors - invalid parameters received". I have my suspicious that this is linked to .NET because I am still unsuccessful with installing dotnet35 in winetricks. it tells me that it wont install because I'm running a 64bit operating system, though that didn't stop me with Ubuntu 11.10. I wouldn't mind trying to remove everything and starting all over again, if that would help. In my excitement I installed steam and skyrim BEFORE installing all this required software. any suggestions?

had no problems with installing skyrim but now i want to start the game and it dont detects my graphic card, i got a nvidia gtx560 but it says i have geforce 8800 and if i want to start the game i come to the beginning screen but the text on the left corner (New,Load,Options....) doesnt show up.

anyone got an idea to fix this?

I run Skyrim on Arch64 following the tips on here so thanks! Skyrim and Steam both work great.

Every now and again the game kind of pauses. It might be that it's simply a limitation of Wine, but, as it's already running very well, I wonder if there might just be some tweaking needed, whether in xorg.conf or through regedit?

Does anyone have some good advice on how to get the best out of Skyrim's performance under Wine, or 3D games more generally?

I have an Intel Q660 overclocked at 3.5Ghz and a Nvidia GTX260 fwiw.

Skyrim ignores video settings - forced windowed mode

Skyrim used to work for me on my arch x86_64 install, but not anymore.
It refuses to open in anything but a 640x480 window, regardless of my wine or Skyrim video settings. This did however work in the beginning of January, so something has happened at least. Anyone else had the same problem?

Info:
Currently using wine 1.4-rc4, and installed using clean wineprefix.
Also used winetricks xact d3dx9_42 vcrun2008 before I ran Steam.
No difference between windows xp and windows 7 mode, still the same windowed mode when starting.

No registry or dll overrides.

Mac OS X Lion - Mouse does not wrap around

The installation went fine, the graphics look good as well but the only problem is that I can only rotate the camera around until my mouse pointer hits the edge of the screen/window. I've tried mwo=force in winetricks and that doesn't do anything.

I'm using the wineskin wrapper if that make much difference.

Works on Ubuntu, but not on Fedora

We have tried to get Skyrim to run under Fedora 16 for a while, but haven't been able to get the mouse control to behave properly. It is very jumpy and moves around uncontrollable. Somewhat similar to what pcohen described on December 1. We have tried all the suggestions we could find here, with winetricks, adjusting bMouseAcceleration, GLSL, iPresentInterval, fMouseHeadingX/YScale etc. But to no avail.

Since several people have reported success on Ubuntu, we decided to try that on the same hardware. We installed Steam and Skyrim, ran winetricks and installed DirectX. And it ran fine from the start. We can now run on Ultra High graphic settings with no problems at all.

Does anyone have any idea why this happens? The Ubuntu Wine is older, but several people have reported successes with newer Wine on Ubuntu, so it does not appear to be the issue. Is it the newer Nvidia drivers in Fedora that might cause this? Or why does it behave so differently?

trouble with key bindings

Whenever I bind keys, they show up as '???'. But now I have this issue that the character menu appears no matter what keyboard key I press (even ones that are not bound to anything). So I can move forward, but the menu keeps flashing. I can't access the game menu to reset the controls either. I don't know what file I can delete which contains the bindings too.

latest 1.3 update broke y-axis for me.

so while I can still mouse-look left and right normally, any attempt to mouse-look up and down is done so at drastically reduced mouse-speed.

Skyrim crashes before it starts

Skyrim is crashing on startup. I am able to get Steam running, but when I launch Skyrim the launcher appears and I'm able to change settings, but as soon as I click play, it crashes. I've tried everything that I've seen on here for Skyrim and Steam, including disabling gameoverlayrenderer. Nothing seems to be working. I'm running an Nvidia GTX 560 Ti 448 core with 290 drivers. SkyBoost mod for better performance?

I discovered this mod:

It's supposed to increase performance quite a bit via dininput injection, though I couldn't really confirm it working via wine. Not sure if that was a problem on my setup though (TESVAL works fine on the other hand..).

Could someone check this out and commend here?
I'd like to see if there's a way to get this to work

Steam client update

32bit wine 1.3.36 in xp mode, nvidia 290.10, retail DVD
Steam update forced directx, vcredist and dotnet web installer after validating game cache.
Since dotnet cannot install properly, steam refused to start the game. Steam removed and the game just works with no dll overrides at all, considering this workaround.

Performances issues

Hello,

I have the following configuration:
- Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 750
- Radeon HD 5750
- 4G ram

- openSUSE 11.3 (x86_64)
- Catalyst 11.11

At first launch skyrim recommended me "Ultra" settings... but i have set "low".
Skyrim runs on this config but performances are really bad, outdoor fps is never better than 25 fps :/.
I don't understand why performances are so bad, nvidia users don't seems have such problems.

Note: I have tried some tweaks such like disabling GSLS but i got an error message about Shader Model 3 (like Ulrika).
I somebody could have ideas/advices..

Mouse lag issues

I've tried to install Skyrim now, and followed the how-to here. However, when I start the game (load a saved game) and try to move the mouse around it responds very slowly, and doesn't react at once. When I turn left, and then turn right it keeps moving left for a short while.

I've done "winetricks vcrun2008" and I have installed DirectX10. Initially it jumped around a lot more, but after adjusting fMouseHeadingYScale and fMouseHeadingXScale in Skyrim.ini it moves slower. But it is quite laggy. Setting bMouseAcceleration=0 doesn't seem to change anything.

I have tried to disable GLSL, but then I got an error message complaining about Shader Model 3 and the game doesn't start at all.

Graphics card: ATI Radeon HD 5670
Catalyst: 11.11
OS: Fedora 16
Wine version: 1.3.35

Game stalls

Running Wine 1.3.35 on an ATI card. Skyrim loads, runs, video is fine, sound is fine...then at the end of the opening scene, while my character is still in the cart, it just stalls. The program will only respond to the Esc key.

Looking around the web, this problem appears to be related to the audio sampling rate on Windows machines, but I have no idea how to alter that in Wine or if this is the same problem.

Any suggestions?

Skyrim works great with small quirks

OK, so I just wanted to confirm that Skyrim/Steam is working flawlessly (more or less) on my system!
Specs are Gentoo ~amd64
kernel-3.1.5-gentoo custom-built kernel
wine-1.3.35 (compiled to 32-bit only)
winetricks 20111115
using native 1920x1080 resolution
NOT using PulseAudio (only ALSA is installed)
Asus G73JW-3DE latop:
nVidia GTX460M 1536MB using driver 290.10
Intel i7-740QM
8GB DDR3

Installation:
steam was installed via the SteamInstall.msi download
$wine msiexec -i SteamInstall.msi

After steam installtion, went to CD and installed game while Steam was running in OFFLINE MODE
After game installtion, I went to the game's installation folder (( ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Steam/steamapps/common/skyrim/DirectX10/ )) and ran DXSETUP.exe
After DXSETUP.exe was completed, went to steam UI and started game. During this phase, steam will install three phases for the game, the last is .NET for. This finished in about 20 minutes and presented me with the game's widget on my desktop.

Now, I know some of you might scoff at me using a UI to control .wine folder, but I do. It helps me to keep my wine folders separated per game/installation. If you know the exact registry edits and like to do it that way, then by all means, please do! This is only here to maybe help other users that might be having issues. If one person can gleen enough info from my post to get their system running well, then it was worth it. If anyone has any suggestions for changes in my settings, please let me know and I'll try them out.

So far, while playing the game, Steam works fine, although a bit laggy on the interface. Skyrim advanced settings will not stay set, but I have AA and AF set at 2x each, and it stays, thankfully.

While in game, I cannot change my key bindings. for some reason, when changing keybindings, the game will not wait for user input keybind and go straight to something like '0x5' for the new keybind. Also, the walk/run key (capslock) doesn't work all too well. sometime it will lock to walk or run, but not all the time. Shift is held in order to walk, instead.

Other than those two quirks, the game runs flawlessly! I don't know the exact framerate, but it is smooth, whether outside or in.

Hey all,

Skyrim was working well for me for quite some time, but since the patch to 1.3, it appears to be broken.

I've deleted all my local content and reinstalled with Steam, and have tried wine versions 1.3.34 and 1.3.35 to no avail, despite it working fine on 1.3.34 previously.

When I try to launch Skyrim from the Steam library (or the TESV/SkyrimLauncher executables) I get an error box about SkyrimLauncher encountering a serious error, and then the launcher exits.

Anybody know what I can check to try and fix this?

Currently using wine 1.3.35, but have tested with 1.3.34 as well; nvidia 290.10 on Debian testing/unstable.

installing Skyrim and dotnet35

I thought I'd post here and see if I could get a hand with some issues I'm having with installing Skyrim (finally got it!) on Steam through wine. I bought the DVD retail, but it seems that it must still be activated and played through steam. No biggie, I thought. But now, it seems that Steam wants to install dotnet 3.5 to be able to run Skyrim. Is this necessary? Is anyone else allowing this to happen?

I have installed dotnet35 with wintricks (version 20111115), but it failed out as I expected it to. It still 'installed', but now Steam wants to install it again. Is there any way to bypass this? I have done this on many distros, 32 and 64 bit versions, trying to get this game to run, with no success yet.

Multiple versions

A question: do we want to have different versions in appdb for different patch versions? Since steam is half forced, updates are automatic/forced for game play so old version don’t mean anything after new one is released. So I guess I should just merge those accidental versions to Steam one...

Is there any guidelines about this or should I just do it since no-one bothers to answer to me? :P

Sudden frame rate drop

After a random length of time, my fps drops dramatically.

Menus always seem to be fine @ 60fps, gameplay usually starts at about 30fps, but will suddenly drop down to 7fps !!

Any ideas ?

Performance

I have noticed that I seem to have more stutters and a lower frame rate when I am outdoors, and a much higher frame rate and no stutters when I am indoors. According to what I have read, and from friends of mine, this is the opposite in Windows. Am I doing something wrong?

Character won't stop moving

Mouse going crazy

Hi
I successfully installed Skyrim on a Fedora16 x86_64 with wine 1.3.33 from update-testing repo.
I was able to get everything working (video fairly fine with a 9600M GT with medium settings), audio is good.
Unfortunately it is definitely unplayable in my case as the mouse is totally crazy. It does not seem to be related to described lag because I changed the parameters as suggested. My problem is that my mouse has a totally inconsistent behaviour.
During the start menu or when I go into the menu, mouse is behaving nicely and the pointer has a normal behaviour.
When I come into game, I am not even able to guess what will happen. It is like my mouse is suddenly going left or up and wheeling instead of moving. I have not been able to understand or predict what would happen. This is just a pain to move.

I tried with the 32 bits wine version. Same effect. I tried many things with winetricks but was not able to get something working.

Does anybody have any idea ? I am really going mad, feeling so close but unable to use it :(

Sticking movement keys

I've tried under Wine on 2 different PCs (Ubuntu 11.04 and 11.10), and after a short time the movement keys get stuck so I'm always moving with no keys pressed !!

Under WinXP, the game works fine.

Any ideas ?

Can't map keys

Hello,

So I have everything working except that I cannot remap keys. I prefer to use qwes for movement instead of the default wasd. Whenever I try to change the input for any key, it shows 0x45 as the key I am trying to remap to instead of the actual key I pressed. Only the mouse successfully shows me M1 or M2 when I try to remap it.

I have tried to look for the format of the INI file to see if I can manually create the mappings but I haven't found anything out there. Can anyone else remap the controls?

Sharing some interesting results

Hello all. I posted the following in the following bug report: bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26292 and wanted to share my findings with everyone.


Not sure if this is helpful or not but thought I'd throw it out there. I also
get an immediate GL_OUT_OF_MEMORY (0x505) error when playing with all settings
on high--and can also confirm that setting shadows to anything other then 'low'
seems to be a main culprit. So while messing around on Google trying to find
out why the latest patch made the game significantly more unstable (another
issue entirely) I came across some posts mentioning that you can make the
TESV.exe LAA (Large Address Aware) so that It can address >2GB of memory.

If you don't have the latest patch you can use these instructions to make your
TESV.exe Large Address Aware -->

If however you do have the latest patch and don't have a copy of the original
exe laying around you will need to go this route (I couldn't get it to work)-->

the update made it so that steam can no longer be bypassed by running TESV.exe
directly and Steam also checks the integrity of TESV.exe. This method is
suppose to let Steam verify the EXE and THEN inject the LAA code. Again, I
couldn't get this method to work.

I ended up finding a copy of the original EXE and used the first method.

Anyway, my point? making the EXE Large Address Aware I was able to play for
more than 30 minutes with all settings at max and with no crashes, Out Of
Memory or otherwise (I quite because I had to go do some things so I'm not sure
how long it will last this way).

I'm not sure if this helps diagnose the problem in any way or if I'm just
masking the crash by throwing more memory at the game but just thought I'd
share.

BTW I'm running 64Bit Gentoo and I'm running the game from a 64Bit WINEPREFIX
and my rig has 16GB or ram.

If this is irrelevant info then let me know and if so, sorry for the wasted
space



So using a "Large Address Aware" executable I was able to play Skyrim for 4 hours solid with every possible setting set to max without a single crash or slowdown and TOP showed that TESV.exe hovered around 7.8% memory usage.

I don't want to get anyone's hopes up, and this may or may not work for you, but I wanted to share since my results were rather significant.

Just by way of doing my due diligence, here is my set-up:
1. I'm running wine 1.3.33
2. I'm running a 64 bit OS (Gentoo)
3. I'm running the game from a 64 bit prefix
4. My system has 16Gb of ram, a core i7 and a Nvidia GTX 480
5. I used the first method (first link in the above bug report post) because I could never get the second one to work.

I post these specs because I don't know if the results will be the same for someone running a 32 bit distro which has a 4Gb memory limit as a 32 bit OS hands out memory a bit differently then a 64 bit OS does. So please be careful and I'm not responsible if your machine blows up.

In regards to #5, I didn't have the original Pre-Patch version of the executable since Steam updated it automatically so I had to find it. I don't want to post a link as I'm not sure if that's allowed but I would suggest reading through the following forum thread:

I use Archlinux 32 Bit and wine version 1.3.33.

The game gets very laggy for up to a few secounds when:

1. Entering a new location.
2. Looking around in a newly entered location (seeing stuff which hasn't been seen before?).
3. Casting a spell which hasn't been casted before in the same skyrim session, also smaller lags happen when recasting the spell.
3. Sometimes for a shorter period (< 1 secound, but noticeable) when walking through a locaton which has already been entered and looked at.

These lags tend to be longer with higher graphic settings but even on lowest settings they appear. However, even on higher settings the game runs pretty smooth when not lagging as desribed.

My hardware is:

Graphics:
- EVGA Nvidia Geforce GTX 460 OC
CPU:
- AMD Athlon 64 X2 3000+ overclocked to 105% (2 x 3,15Ghz)
RAM:
- 2 x 2GB DDR2 800 CL4
HDD:
- Connected via SATA, don't know exact specs but it's a regular drive.

Skyrim is on a dm-crypt partition, which could produce an overhead when loading stuff from hdd. However, Oblivion ran smoothly without lags on high settings on the very same partition and i don't believe the texture resolution in Skyrim to be much higher (especially when set to "low").


More information needed? Someone has similar problems? Any ideas on a solution?

I have Mint katya and I can't get the installer to work for me. I have the prereqa installed via winetricks except for dx9_42. When I try to install I get the installer box and press enter. It shows an emblem spinning around showing its working. Then after about 5 minutes it just stops. I am simply right clicking on the installer and running it under wine that way. Since I am a newbie is there something else I should try?

Periodic Interface Lag

I haven't seen others mention this, yet, so perhaps this is something going on with my specific system/install. While playing the game, I periodically have to deal with interface lag. There will be a 2-5 second delay between what I do with the mouse/keyboard (loot a container, move the mouse, etc.) and the action taking place on the screen. I can hear the sound of a container sliding open, but the loot window doesn't actually appear until 2-5 seconds later. Same goes for moving the mouse to look around or trying to move/fight. This lag will continue for up to 5 minutes and then it seems to catch up and things return to normal for a time before starting all over again. This continues the entire time I'm playing.

Not sure if system specs would be helpful with this, but here they are anyway. I should also mention that I dual-boot Windows and do not encounter this problem with the Windows install.

System:

Nvidia GT520M w/1Gb RAM
6GB DDR3 RAM

Mouse Cursor After Steam Update

After the most recent update from Steam (not sure what version, but it was sometime between 13 nov and 21 nov), the system mouse cursor graphic appears in the middle of the screen and does not go away.

Is anyone else experiencing this? The same update caused TESV to start the launcher instead of the game itself. Perhaps the two are related.

Skyrim Game Load/New game issue

Hello,

I'm trying sine 4-5 day to setup Skyrim on wine on two different machines but they show the same error.

Hardware:
Machine 1: Desktop: Intel quarcore Q9550, ATI HD6870, 8GB Ram
Machine 2: Notebook: Intel C2D 2.8Ghz, ATI 4850 Mobility, 4GB Ram

Catalyst 11.11 for Linux_x64
Software: Ubuntu 11.10 x64, Wine1.3.32
Installed Wine Apps: detnet20 + dotnet30 + dotnet35 + vcrun2008 + vcrun2010 + xact + directx from skyrim

Wine Registry: (Direct3D section)
AlwaysOffscreen=enabled
DirectDrawRenderer=opengl
Multisampling=enabled
OffscreenRenderingMode=backbuffer
UseGLSL=enabled (does not start with disabled, tells no render device found)
VideoMemorySize=512 or 1024 (depending on machine1/2)

I'm able to launch the game and the mouse, menu and sound(44.1kHz 16 bit) are working but when I load a game I created on a Windows install of the game and when I start a new game. The game freezes on the laptop or just closes on desktop while the short intro from load to game or from new game to trailer movie.
I guess the game crashes/freezes on my machines while the real game is initialized in backround while the short intros.
I also removed the trailer in /Data/Video folder.

I played around very much with game video settings and wine registry settings used different software configs with and cleared my wine prefix more than 20 times. But no success at the moment.

The game just freezes or disappears after the short load or new game sequences.

Please advice I'm out of ideas!

Thank you, usually I had no sound in XP mode because of pulseaudio, but after installing directx10 from the install directory I have fine (not crackling) sound in XP mode.

The installer doesn't have the standard Windows window decoration !

The installer freezes, making it impossible to choose where to install the game. Invisible buttons (ok, cancel, browse -- I guess).

When the installer window is moved around, it takes the appearance of the desktop background.

I tried many things now suggested on this page, but in the end it only works if i install directx10 from skyrim-folder and NOTHING else.
If I install xact or vcrun2008 the game will crash after a few moments up to 20 seconds maximum. Without those, no crash at all. Doesnt matter if pulseaudio is active or not.

Screen flickers ONES somewhere arround second or third displayed messaged during loading-dragon-screen, and one second later the screen freezes. The time before the flicker is can be changed +-2sec depending on unknown differences.

Does anyone who have an ATI Radeon HD series graphicscard have a working skyrim? If not, lets compare driver version, os version, card-series number. And if anyone have a solution, please post it:)

Crash on launch in Arch and Crash on new game in Debian

I've been trying since launch to get this working with no success. I have two machines that I've been trying to get this running on, one running Arch and the other running Debian Squeeze. Both are x86_64 running Wine 1.3.32. I've tried everything here on the appdb and several Windows glitch fixes and nothing works. Steam works great on both machines and the launcher loads fine. Yes, the launcher does work. When TESV.exe loads on the Arch machine I get a strange image with a black background and white and colored lines. On Debian, the game loads and the title screen runs fine. When I start a new game, the opening starts with the dragon statue load screen, but then it freezes or crashes depending on how I've tweaked the settings. The Debian machine is: Intel Centrino 2 @ 2.13Ghz 6gb ddr2 ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650. The Arch machine is: Intel i5 2500k @ 3.3Ghz OC'd at 4.5Ghz 8gb ddr3 Radeon HD 6850. Any thoughts?

Crackling, choppy sound with pulseaudio

Sound output is unbearably distorted and constantly interrupted with crackling. It's almost impossible to understand what the NPCs are saying.

This is on Arch 64 with Wine 1.3.32, Pulseaudio and kernel 3.1.1-1.
When I kill pulseaudio, the sound in Skyrim is crystal clear.

What I already tried:

1. Changed pulseaudio sample rate to 48000.

2. Switched wine from Win XP to Win 7 (the chopping rhythm is a bit slower on Win 7, but sound remains broken).

3. winetricks xact, set override for x3daudio1_7

4. Started Skyrim with padsp. Got no sound at all.

In other wine applications like World of Warcraft, sound plays fine, even with pulseaudio enabled.

Any suggestions?

Textures

It seems like I'm the only one who has this bug. What happens is that when I move the mouse, say, to the right, it moves without a problem. When I then need to change the direction — it continues to move right for a couple of seconds, then slows down and then starts moving to the left. This makes the game impossible to play for me. If I use 1.2.3, the stable Wine, this doesn't happen, but the mouse look is jerky (this is observed by many people). So... is there a patch I could use or something?

The game runs great if you can get it to start.

I randomly get the following error upon starting it.

(the game goes black after the logo, and you have to kill it)

Then I get the game crashing after the logo with this

Part One
--------

1. I purchased Skyrim via Steams website.
2. Installed Steam following the 'green howto' guide on this page :
appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=19444
3. Get Steam running, log in and start, and wait for the Skyrim download to complete.

4. copied my Skyrim folder out over to my ~/Applications/Games Folder
$ mv ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Steam/steamapps/ ~/Applications/Games/

Part Two
--------

1) create new prefix for skyrim
$ winetricks prefix=skyrim vcrun2008 xact

2)run winetricks
$ winetricks

3) select skyrim prefix from the menu

4) select console/run a terminal

5) copy Skyrim
$ cd ./Program\ Files/
$ ln ~/Applications/Games/steamapps/common/skyrim ./Skyrim -s
$ cd ./Skyrim

4) install the Directx10 included with the game
wine ./DirectX10/DXSETUP.exe

5) Optional : Fix Audio Sample Rate problems :
a) make a userland copy of pulseaudio configuration
$ cp /etc/pulse/daemon.conf ~/.daemon.conf

b) edit the file in your favourite editor :

c) modify some settings to force 24bit 48000hz sampling rate
default-sample-format = s24le
default-sample-rate = 48000

d) save it & exit nano

e) force pulseaudio to restart (spam this as many times as it takes to reach the point where it tells you there is no longer any processes called pulseaudio)

f) restart pulseaudio

5) Provide wine with your video card memory size via regedit

Mouse X/Y out of sync

Hi,

on Archlinux (32 Bit) horizontal mouse movement works fine while vertical movement is really slow in comparison (in other words: Turning sideways is easy while looking up or down is a pain in the ass). Any ides on how to fix or workaround this?

Sound works well on XP mode, crackles on Vista/W7

I was testing various Windows version mode settings to see if they improve anything. Sound seems to work perfectly on XP mode, but crackles a lot on W7/Vista. Outputs following error: ALSA lib ../../../src/pcm/pcm.c:7316:(snd_pcm_recover) underrun occurred

Only ALSA is installed without Pulseaudio and wine is using winealsa.drv. Have you got any success with W7 mode?

everything works

Everything works flawless on Archlinux 64. No problems with mouse/sound. Small problem with TAB key when virtual desktop is on, but it works fine without this option.

Game installed with RAZOR update 1 repack on Windows, copied to linux.
Running game thru launcher doesnt work, but thru TESV.exe is ok.

Works very well in ULTRA details, full hd resolution.
