Description

Patch 4.3: Hour of Twilight
In the wake of the Cataclysm, Azeroth's champions rose up to thwart the forces of the maddened black Dragon Aspect, Deathwing. Thus far the world's defenders have shattered the power base of the Twilight's Hammer cult and defeated the raging elemental lords Al'Akir and Ragnaros. Yet despite these victories, as long as Deathwing is free to pursue his twisted goals, Azeroth will remain under threat.

No one is more aware of this fact than the great Dragon Aspects Alexstrasza, Nozdormu, Ysera, and Kalecgos. Together with the wise shaman Thrall, they have devised a plan to vanquish Deathwing with a weapon of his own design: the infamous Dragon Soul.

In patch 4.3, Thrall and the noble Aspects will call upon the Horde and the Alliance to help them retrieve the artifact--no longer in existence--from the distant past. Those brave enough to face the challenge will embark on a perilous journey from Azeroth's apocalyptic End Time to the Dragon Soul's point of origin during the catastrophic War of the Ancients.

If the heroes succeed, an even more harrowing battle awaits them in the present....

HOWTO

Installing World of Warcraft in Wine

NOTE: It is HIGHLY recommended for ATI users to use the latest Catalyst package found at ati.amd.com. As of release 9.8, this fixes TONS of bugs.

NOTE: It is HIGHLY recommended that you have the latest stable wine version installed (currently - wine 1.2.1).
[Beta versions of wine are unstable. If you use a Beta version, check the test results above to see if it is reported as working with your Linux distribution].

Preliminary Steps:

nVidia / ATI : Make sure you have the proprietary driver for your video card installed, or WoW will not run. Once they are installed, check to see if Direct Rendering is enabled by typing the following code into Terminal :-

glxinfo | grep "direct rendering"

If it returns direct rendering:Yes, you're good to go!

Installing:

[ You can install World of Warcraft in wine through a variety of methods, such as using the CD or automatic downloader. It's your choice ultimately. ]

To install using the downloader just run it with Wine and follow the steps. There are no major problems using the downloader. If you are using the downloader you can jump straight to the  Configuring section.

Below are the instructions for installing from WoW Disks :-

To install from the CDs the files need to be copied over to your computer as attempting to install directly from disk will result in failure.

Create a folder in a convenient location such as on the desktop called wow_install

You will only need to install WoW using the Wrath of the Lich King disks. (The Wrath disks will install the WoW core game and the Burning Crusde as well)

Insert Disk 1 of the Wrath of the Lich King.

When you open the disk you will not be able to see all the files as they are hidden. To get them to show run the following code in Terminal :-

sudo mount -o remount,unhide /dev/sr0

If that code doesn't work try this one :-

sudo umount /dev/cdrom
sudo mount -t iso9660 -o ro,unhide /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom0/

Then open the disk again and you should see all the files.

Open the disk and copy all the files to your wow_install folder.

Now insert Disk 2 of the Wrath of the Litch King and follow the same step above to unhide the files.

Copy only the Installer Tome #.mpq files to the wow_install folder. (# will be a number. Basically from Disk 2 copy only the Installer Tomes that have a number in their name (NOT the one without a number, we got that one from Disk 1)).

Once complete eject the disk and run the Installer.exe in the wow_install folder with wine. (Simply right click it and select "Open with Wine Windows Program Loader").

WoW will now install.

Once the installation is complete a shortcut will be on the desktop to run WoW. Of course you will have to go through the patching process.

Note: A few people have reported that the installer just sits at "Preparing to Install". A solution is to ensure that you have the correct ports opened on your firewall or to temporarily disable your firewall. Make sure you edit / disable your firewall in your router (and on your distro if you use one).

Note: Some users report that the WoW launcher/updater may freeze during the patching process. If this happens to you, simply close it down (terminate the process) and then just start it again from the desktop shortcut or Launcher.exe. It will carry on from where it was before.

Note: WoW may experience problems if you are attempting to run it from a Windows partition. The WoW folder must NOT be in an NTFS filesystem. Ensure the folder you are running WoW from is in your Linux partition, under your Linux filesystem.

IMPORTANT - Make sure you go through the Configuring section below.

IMPORTANT - Linux distributions using pulseaudio (such as Ubuntu) will probably experience sound issues. See the"No sound with Pulse Audio" section in the Tweaks and Troubleshooting area below for a fix. Also note that sound quality may not operate at its best with WINE, despite which *nix you are running WINE under.

IMPORTANT - Launch WoW from the desktop shortcut or from the Launcher.exe rather than directly from WoW.exe. This is because the launcher will check for updates and will auto patch/update the game if necessary. If you launch WoW directly from the WoW.exe (such as in the "No sound with Pulse Audio" fix), then make sure you still launch the Launcher.exe from time to time just to check for updates, not to run the game.

Configuring

The suggested way to run World of Warcraft in wine is using OpenGL. You will often gain tons of FPS this way. Operation without the opengl flag is often unreliable and will not start with some cards.

Simply add the -opengl flag to the end of your WoW Launcher (recommended) :-

Open the WoW desktop shortcut (Right Click > Properties) and add -opengl to the end of the command (leaving a space). (Recommended method). (Recommended for first run after CD or download).

NOTE: As of patch 4.0.1 hardware cursor functionality has been added for OpenGL mode.

Alternatively, you can either edit your WTF/Config.wtf in your World of Warcraft directory to include :-

SET gxApi "opengl"

(Note that this file is only created after you have logged in once).

The game will now run. If you have any problems or issues please check the sections below for fixes or post a comment for help.

TWEAKS + TROUBLESHOOTING

Tweaks and Troubleshooting

You should be good to go! If you are experiencing any other issues, read on.

Sound issues

It should be noted that sound implementation of WINE is still mostly incomplete and you may be subject to buggy sound or bad quality.

If you cannot get any sound at all, try deleting your .wine directory (backup needed files!)
- On Ubuntu, you can find your .wine directory by going to your Home folder, and pressing CTRL + H

No sound with Pulse Audio

"well for those users with a distro using pulse audio (for ex. Ubuntu) if you set wine to OSS the sound for WoW works great, and if you add padsp before wine pulseaudio wraps the OSS sound (like alsa-oss but better) and you can use vent, music etc at the same time :)" ~ Thanks to Patrick Arman

Launch Code :-

padsp wine /path/to/wow/WoW.exe -opengl

No sound with ALSA

Try OSS.

No sound with OSS

Try ALSA/Jack.

No sound with JACK

Try ALSA or OSS

Sound stutter:

- If your sound stutters then there is not much you can do about it apart from adjusting your sound driver in WINE. There are various drivers and settings (e.g. ALSA, OSS, Emulation Mode) which you can try. Do note than Windows 7 mode seems to still be incompatable with many of the WINE sound drivers. Best is to use wither Windows 2000 or Windows XP mode.
- Also try the "padsp wine" command in the terminal.

Unfortunately, most sound stutter problems are a result of bugs in WINE, especially with PulseAudio distros. In time, these issues may be solved. But for now, try to fiddle around with the settings until you get the correct combination.

Bad sound quality or latency:

Its highly likely that this is due to WINE, but first try to fiddle around with your sound settings before drawing to that conclusion. If you are not satisfied with the quality of the sound you get, then feel free to include that in your test results.

Graphics-related issues

Graphics corruption when doing certain quests which causes you to appear to be in a nether world:

Add this to your config.wtf file:

SET ffxNetherWorld "0" ~ thanks to Adys

White Minimap Indoors with ATI proprietary drivers:

Update the ATI drivers.

source: http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1058

Graphical and Icon corruption:

Update your drivers!

NVIDIA-specific issues
First make sure your drivers are updated!

GLXBadDrawable

Make sure triple-buffering is turned off. ~ Thanks to DRH

INTEL issues

Unfortunately, Intel does not make its own drivers for their cards for Linux. Their Windows drivers aren't even that good to start with.

For World of Warcraft to work properly, you need to look for an Open Source Intel Driver that gives you direct OpenGL rendering support. Most dristros will have already had a good driver implemented into the kernel, particularly Ubuntu. So you need not worry about it.

There are no known Issues with Intel Cards, however, it should be expected that the FPS will be lower as the Intel chips are integrated and hence share their video memory with the computer's main RAM as well as makes use of extra processing from the CPU.

Other issues

Open Source Graphics Drivers:

If you have low frames with your Open Source drivers, then try the proprietary drivers for ATI and Nvidia. The Open Source Drivers have a lot of performance issues at the moment.

FPS stutter

- Ensure that you have disabled any special desktop effects

- Set farclip (the view distance slider) to 777 (about midway on the slider) ~ Thanks to Andrew

Bad FPS in general:

- Make sure that your latency bar is not red.
- Please set the MaxFPS setting to at least 20-30. This will decrease the resource taking of the game on the computer and thus result in lower temperatures. This will increase the game's performance quite a lot. ~ Thanks to Xio
- Ensure your CPU is not being overloaded with instructions. In other words, whether or not its usage is 100%
- Ensure that you are running the game in OpenGL mode. You can do this by either adding SET GxApi "OpenGL" in the config.wtf or passing the -opengl argument in the terminal.
- AMD users will want to ensure that AMD Cool 'n Quiet is disabled in the BIOS. Please see your motherboard manufacturer's site documentation for more details on how to do this.
- Make sure the CPU scaling governor is set to "Performance" rather than "OnDemand"~ thanks to Vidar Wahlberg.

NB: If you have a multi-core processor, chances are that your FPS drops is caused by
WoW not identifying your cores correctly. A user has submitted a patch that might solve
this for you if you compile it alongside WINE from source: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11674#c64 ~ Thanks to Vitality

No higher-level shadows or water effects available

This will not be available for the OpenGL mode until such a time Blizzard chooses to implement it, which is highly unlikely.

Bad graphical corruption in certain areas with Direct3D

  • Find the following registry entry:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D\

  • Add a new key (type String) and name it 'OffscreenRenderingMode'

  • Double click the new key and add the value 'pbuffer'

System-related issues

If you are finding that WoW is installing correctly but at the final step of logging in you receive an error message "There was an error logging in..." try the fix below :-

The problem is related to DLL files needed for the process being unable to "communicate" with each other.

Add the following DLL override to your Libraries tab of Winecfg :-

wldap32.dll (Native)

This should solve the issue and login should not work.

Alternative :-

WoW may fail if you are running it from a windows partition. The WoW folder cannot be in an NTFS filesystem. Copy your WoW folder over to your Linux filesystem.

Linux kernel:

Try to see if your kernel is up-to-date. New kernel releases should appear in your distrubution's update manager.

It is also a good idea to use the kernels that is released by your distro and not compile them yourself as they usually interface better with the entire system in general.

In some distros, particularly the non-Ubuntu ones, you may need to reinstall your proprietary video drivers in order to be able to make use of 3D acceleration once again. Please do so.

Other Known Issues:

Sunshafts cannot be enabled in d3d mode:

This is due to the lack of a certain type of texture support in WINE's direct3d API. It will be corrected in version 1.3.7. Please note that sunshafts is currently non-existent in the OpenGL mode. More info at: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24928

WoW not recognising shader model 3 in OpenGL:

World of Warcraft's OpenGL mode for the Windows client does not support anything higher than shader model 2. Thus, it will not be possible to make use of this.

Low fps and no water shader
by Ibuki Tenshi on Sunday February 16th 2014, 13:39
I am running on Linux Mint 16 I have 2 Radeon graphic cards AMD Radeon HD 7660D AMD Radeon HD 6570. Drivers appear to be working normally. Other games that I try to run either have a black/white screen or are uber glitchy like Octodad the deadliest catch his body is invisible low fps, League of legends lights are not working total chaos on the screen blue character and low fps. Slenderman the arrival low fps. I think its a shader related problem but if the libraries are missing or are not working properly I have no idea how to fix them. Anyone has any ideas?

This version of WoW is pirated
by Guti on Sunday December 30th 2012, 13:27
Current World of Warcraft version is 5.1.
This is 4.3, ergo it's older version used for private WoW server. While I understand that sometimes WINE users have to use cracks to avoid some crazy DRM preventing them from playing games with WINE, this is not the case. It's piracy, simple as that and I'm kinda shocked that WINEHQ doesn't moderate stuff at their website (or just support piracy perhaps).

When someone who doesn't approve piracy come here, he will think that we, linux users are pirates and thiefs. Fix this please.

Luncher worked for me once..
by a z on Friday September 14th 2012, 14:30
This worked last go-round by disabling peer to peer, but the patch it is working on now- 4.3.4.15595 it has an issue with Agent.exe, which the workarounds for-which in appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=25610 are havingonly a partial effect, no downloading is being done despite Agent getting past its error.

Currently running Launcher over network-share which is of course excruciatingly slow and requires samba configuration and a windows machine. It just got to full-bar on "downloading updated tools then exited and its sitting there in its atom-processor/network share slowness - not sure it will be returning. Will see.

Failed to run required program "Agent", BLZPTS00007
by Paul Romeril on Tuesday August 28th 2012, 16:41
I received this error after launching the Launcher, and allowing it to begin "Downloading Updated Tools". I had previously received this error when attempting to install the beta, and was unable to resolve them. I am not sure if this is the correct version to post in, since the patch upgrades the version, however, the page with the correct version number is for the beta. I have tried relaunching the Launcher, though the thermometer bar for "Downloading Updated Tools" quickly progresses part way, and then stops. Once when I closed the Launcher, the Background Downloader is behind it, with the thermometer bar empty, and the status text reading "Waiting...". If I close that also(when it was there), the blue wine desktop remains. I then used "wineserver -k" to close wine, and then launched the launcher. the "Downloading Updated Tools" bar

I am attempting to find a report of this on Bugzilla, without luck. I recall seeing a page with instructions previously, though I cannot find it. I cannot find any FAQ or Instructions on what information to sumbit on bugs, so I hope this description will suffice.

Entering a city (Orgrimmar) - "Unhandled exception: page fault on execute access"
by K W on Sunday August 12th 2012, 8:31
Other avatars to not crash (whom are not in a city), but when entering a city I received a error. I can load up other avatars still, but when I return to the one in a city it crashes again. I am running Win 1.4 in Linux Mint 12 GDE. I have SET gxApi "opengl" in the config.wtf and -opengl in the loading of wow.exe. Any ideas?

Major Graphical Issues
by Jason Lee on Sunday August 12th 2012, 1:05
Using the Catalyst drivers straight from AMD's site (12.6 legacy) even tested the ones provided by Ubuntu I'm having this issue with massive screen tearing and overall graphic twitching. FPS is perfect but what is happening is when I login and reach the character select screen is when it starts happening the screen is all twitchy and flashes the login screen randomly (even showing the successful part of the login attempt) this continues in game where again the FPS is fine but the screen starts tearing and twitching again showing the login/character select/loading screens. I've setup for OpenGL, also made sure the Tear Free was turned on in the Catalyst control panel. Currently trying on Wine 1.4.1 but have also tried 1.5.8 and they are both doing the same thing. This is what i've added/changed to try and figure out whats going on

added these to the config.wtf

SET GxApi "OpenGL"
Set UIFaster "2" (tried 0&1 as well)
SET M2UseShaders "0"

Added these to the xorg.conf

Option "Capabilities" "0x00000800"
Option "UseFastTLS" "off" (even tried using 2 instead of off)
Option "KernelModuleParm" "locked-userpages=0"

I've made sure I removed all addons and turned all graphics to Low to see if I can get the issue to at least stop and nothing changed

Wow crash, cannot even start launcher
by David on Thursday August 9th 2012, 21:09
Anytime I attempt to start WoW after using the blizzard installer, it crashes with the below information. I am running wine 1.5.10 under Archlinux x86_64 fully up to date. The E:\ drive the wow folder sits on is an ext4 drive. Any ideas?

Better grafics using D3D
by Thomas Benn on Thursday August 9th 2012, 8:20
Howdie,

now that my WoW-install runs fine again (Unity 3D was to blame) I wonder: There is a fair number of grafic settings in WoW that I can not activate. For instance, Shadow Quality and Liquid Detail won't go over fair, nor will ground clutter, and sun shafts can't be actived at all.
Is this something I can solve / improve by installing some d3dXXX via winetricks?

WoW freezes up briefly
by Thomas Benn on Wednesday July 18th 2012, 1:05
Howdie,

after upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04 my PC still happily plays WoW through wine, but the performance is not anywhere near what it was earlier. The whole gameplay feels a bit...laggy, though CTRL+R shows around 25 to 30 fps. What is worse, I get a complete system freeze every once in a while. Anywhere from one in 3 minutes to twice in 20 seconds, the whoe system hangs, including mouse and keyboard. This last for anything from 1 to 4 seconds and then we're back to normal.
Initially I used 1.5.7, now wine 1.5.8 and nvidia-current-updates 259.49.
Any idea where to start looking for this problem?

WoW Launcher won't terminate
by Thomas Benn on Wednesday June 27th 2012, 1:14
Howdie,

on both of my PCs I have this problem: Wine/Wow will start the launcher, my wife and I can play just fine. But when we close WoW down, the launcher does not terminate, stays in the task list and keeps the blue frame from the emulated desktop alive. That by itself would not be much of a problem but if you try to start WoW again while that other launcher is still active it does not start. I have to manually kill the launcher process for that.

I use wine Ubuntu 11.10 with wine 1.4-rc2 and wife uses 1.5.4.

I tried installing this with the file on the site, the installer would just shut down halfway through. When I used the CD, the unmounting code did not work.

WoW freezing the computer
by Ryan on Saturday May 26th 2012, 23:04
I installed Wine a couple days ago in order to play WoW. The problem I'm having is that when I open the launcher and press 'Play', the computer freezes without even opening WoW.
I've had some problems with it before. The launcher was freezing as well, so I just used the background downloader to get the updated patch. The Launcher still freezes when I open it, but it says the update had been applied.
I can't tell why it's going wrong, as I have to reboot the system when it freezes. I've tried opening it direct from WoW.exe, but have the same problem. Any ideas?

Also, my first time using Wine. Never needed it before. I've had a llok through the thread to see if there were any similar problems as mine, but it seems my 'puter likes to be unique.

4.3 update stuck
by evilny0 on Sunday April 22nd 2012, 5:13
I had a problem when upgrading to the last 4.3 patch. The Launcher would download the update tools, but never end. One of the last lines in the wine log is "BLIZZARD_CC_CMD_DISCONNECTED". I searched for a solution, but unfortunately didn't find one anywhere.

I finally solved this by killing the background task "wow-4.2.1.2736-enUS-tools-downloader.exe" when the Launcher seems stuck.

Just tought I'd post here in case someone has the same problem.

I think I may have missed the fix for this but I'll post it anyway to make sure. I installed WoW 4.3 onto my Ubuntu box and when I try to launch the game I get the following error

Just a heads up for the 4.3.3(15354) patch released today, Mar 27, 2012. I got the patch download prompt and it downloaded an update, however attempting to run wow.exe resulted in an error along the lines of "Patch failed, contact Blizzard support".
I deleted ~/.wine/drive_c/users/Public/Application Data/Blizzard Entertainment/ and all contained files, and now wow.exe launches fine and the game is playable once more. If you're having trouble with the March 27th 2012 Tuesday update, try this.

by Ian Westcott on Monday March 12th 2012, 1:14
AHA! I found the problem -- I have "switch workspace" bound to Control+ArrowKey.

It looks like wine is seeing the ControlDown, but does not receive a ControlUp when the workspace is switched. When I switch back, it still thinks Control is held down and will continue to do so until the control key is pressed and released again.

This is a regression from the 1.3.x branch, so I suppose I'll file a bug.

Wine 1.4 breaking targetting?
by Ian Westcott on Monday March 12th 2012, 1:02
I was having this issue with the rc 1.4 pre-leases.

For some reason I can target mobs but can't attack them. I can right-click to initiate combat, but if I use almost any ability on my warrior, wow gives the on-screen error "invalid target." On my ret paladin, strangely I can use crusader strike, but trying to judge any target (say, a training dummy) still gives me "invalid target."

Tab-targetting is similarly problem, likely because something internally that determines what are attackable targets are is broken.

Any ideas?

new problem?
by Decros on Wednesday February 15th 2012, 16:32
hi guys could someone help me please, i've got ubuntu 11.10 and im not sure what version of wine but i remember its the latest one out that isnt still in beta atm. i've installed WoW an conquered all the issues it threw at me, but now i've got it all set up it seems to work well, but once i've been playing for about 10 minutes the screen goes blank and all i can see is the cursor and floating trees/buildings, the sounds still there and i can ''fix'' it by putting the camera at certain angles or closing and restarting but you cant really play WoW from a top view or keep reloading it every 10 minutes if you wanna do most things. I have tried everything i could think of, i've switched around the graphics drivers, i reinstalled the entire thing, tried doing a set up on winecfg, altered the config.wtf, i've searched a lot for solutions on the internet and not much comes up for my issue but everything i've found so far doesnt change a thing, so many attempts but im stumped, i hope someone can help, im so close yet so far from having WoW back again. and sorry about the block of writing lol.

crash
by Charles on Wednesday February 8th 2012, 2:58
I try to run wow and it logs in great but as soon as I get to the game it crash's. I made WTF file rw but still crash's. Only way I could get it to even show the log in screen was by loging in by terminal with this code.
wine "/home/sgtburkley/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/World of Warcraft/WoW.exe" -opengl
all forums I read said I only had to change the wtf file to read and write and execute using opengl. What else can I do?

Sound goes away when switching zones
by Bryguy on Sunday January 22nd 2012, 12:45
For a couple days I've had my sound go away whenever my character switches zones or when I load a new character. I can bring it back by changing the number of concurrent sounds (which presumably restarts the sound system). It's very annoying.

Nothing in my system changed, nor did I update the game in the intervening time, which is very strange. Anyone else have this problem?

Launcher crashes fixed
by Tom Spear on Thursday January 12th 2012, 16:21
Per bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23875 this is now fixed in latest GIT and probably also 1.3.36

Please try latest GIT if you are able to, and if not, wait for 1.3.37.

The Launcher and background downloader should both NOT crash when using peer to peer downloading now, and you should NOT need to install any version of IE using winetricks.

Other issues with launcher (like the issue with libjpeg8) are topics of other bugs and are not affected by the fix this post is about. Other issues with the game itself (compressed image on dual head nvidia, low fps, etc) are also unaffected by the fix of this post.

Intel HD3000 + OSS Drivers.
by James Lewis on Tuesday December 27th 2011, 16:43
After testing WoW with Ubuntu Oneiric (11.10) on a new laptop with Sandy Bridge HD 3000 on board graphics, Wine 1.3.35 and the latest Mesa 7.12-devel drivers... I have some interesting/strange stuff to report.

The machine I'm testing on is a Lenovo Thinkpad X121e (i3 version), which is a ULV i3-2357M (1.3Ghz) and has an integrated Intel HD 3000 GPU. The graphics drivers come from the Xorg Edgers PPA, and I am running the 3.2.0rc4 kernel from the Ubuntu Precise (12.04) repository... So, it should be pretty clear that I have the latest practical version of everything as of 27/12/2011.

Running WoW on this hardware works (about 20fps), which surprised me because I was expecting that to need an Nvidia/ATI card and proprietary drivers... The problem is that it only works for a short time, perhaps 2-5 minutes... during that time, everything works, I have ported to different regions and areas etc.... there doesn't seem to be any trigger for the eventual crash, which pops up the standard "Program Error" window, but wine itself doesn't stop running and the music continues even tho the GUI stops.

I'm still trying to figure out what happens to cause the crash.

Cant't use Launcher Debian SID
by Kernelpanic on Sunday December 11th 2011, 12:18
Hi,
I can use wow 4.3, and play with no problem, but I can not use the launcher I have use a w$ box to make the upgrade.

When I try to use the launcher I got the error :
"Launcher can not run because its skin archive is damaged, please run repair program"

I run repair with success, but after that I still have the same error.

I try the same install on a ubuntu box, and the laucher run with no problem.

So I think I got some dependency missing, and there the point you can help, what are the dependency you install binary or winetricks install, to get the launcher run ?

If you cant download the patch check it out
by Jeremiah Trimm on Thursday December 1st 2011, 17:15
I hope this helps you guys, it helped me

As of this writing (WoW 4.3, wine 1.3.33 and some earlier versions), the WoW Launcher and Background Downloader both crash when Peer to Peer downloading is enabled and either needs to download a new update. Ironically, the Launcher's Preferences window does not work properly in wine either, so to fix this, start up BackgroundDownloader.exe in your World of Warcraft installation directory, and quickly click the View menu, Preferences. Uncheck Peer to Peer, and check Don't throttlem then click OK. Then you can either let the download continue in the Background Downloader, or you can close the Background Downloader, and re-open the Launcher and the download will not fail.

Note that the WoW Installer from the Account Management site uses the Launcher to download all of the game client beyond the basics it needs to start the Launcher, so if you are installing WoW for the first time, expect that the Launcher will crash (as of this writing) and so you will need to use the Background Downloader to change the preferences. (wowiki)

Lua coroutine
by Dag B on Thursday December 1st 2011, 15:21
I seem to be having trouble with coroutines in Lua. I have an addon that I can run in two modes. One is straight forward, and that is the mode that everyone who uses the addon has.
Another mode is a mode I use for my own sake, and I use it to clean several megabytes of data. It takes a long time, so I made it a coroutine.
This, however, seem to kill wow in seconds after logging in. I disable the cleaning process - effectively not including the coroutine code - and everything runs smoothly. There has been problems before, but that has been a bit touch and go. Now after 4.3 it's consistent.
I enable the coroutine code, WoW dies is seconds. It locks up, and ends by me being thrown out of the server.
I disable the coroutine code, and everything runs beautifully.

I don't have much of a question about this, but hope someone wine-fluent could look into it.

HOWTO: Fix Compressed Image Issue with Dual Head Monitors
by Robert McLaren on Wednesday November 30th 2011, 22:12
For people who have two or more monitors currently the latest NVIDIA driver has your computer thinking that it is one big monitor. Well wine doesn't support this. When Launching World of Warcraft in Full Screen or Full Screen (Windowed) it snaps to only one of the monitors but World of Warcraft projects the combined resolution of all your monitors.

How to Fix:
Close World of Warcraft (If you have it open)
Run NVIDIA Settings (Console command: nvidia-settings)
Disable your non-primary monitors hit Apply then Click Ok
Open World of Warcraft
-It should be back to normal as the resolution of the one monitor working and you can play as is and if you restart or open nvidia-settings you can enable your monitors agian after your done playing

(Optional): Set to windowed mode and exit then activate monitors and download the mod called CT_Viewport: www.ctmod.net/download/15/
Drop like a normal addon into your addon folder

Start World of Warcraft
Drag Window to edges of all your screens so it spans all monitors (still in windowed mode)
type /CT to pull up CT_Viewer Pane, Then ajust the Rendered Area to one monitor hit apply and ok
You now have World of Warcraft on One Screen and Free Space on the other monitors to place Addons and Data to free up space on your normal world of warcraft window.

Note: you will have to drag the window to the corners of every monitor every time you launch the game.

Are People Really Having Problems with the Launcher?
by Robert McLaren on Wednesday November 30th 2011, 22:01
Has anyone other than me managed to get the launcher to stay open and patch the game? If so please post it here with your specs and relevant information:

Edition: Linux Mint 12
Processor: i7 2600K @ 3.40 GHz
RAM: 8 GB
Video Card: NVIDIA 560 Ti with 1GB DDR5 VRAM
Hard Drive(s): Western Digital SATA 160 GB
Maxtor OneTouch FireWire 120 GB
Maxtor SATA 320 GB
SeaGate USB 3.0 500 GB Hard Drive

Notes: I installed the game on a Windows 7 64 Bit Ultimate Computer and just copied World of Warcraft folder to my External Hard Drive. Plugged in External Hard Drive into Linux and Launched the Launcher using Wine Version 1.2.1 did not tweak any settings.
Other than using the launcher to launch the game WoW runs flawlessly.

The uncheck peer-to-peer does not work for me since I the launcher doesn't allow me to access the setting to disable peer-to-peer.

I did manage to disable it in the background downloader but I don't know if the settings are shared. So I have no way of knowing if disabling peer-to-peer will work or not.

Is there a way to disable it Launcher.WTF or Config.wtf ?

It works
by crystal on Wednesday November 30th 2011, 3:51
This also worked for me. I tried to install the update from the launcher and it had a serious error and had to close. I tried to do it from the terminal, it sent me to the launcher and the same thing happened. I unchecked the peer to peer and restarted the launcher, it immediately began downloading. It gave me the completed download but locked up. I forced the quit, and restarted from terminal and it worked, and I'm back to playing.

Fwd: RE: Launcher.exe crashes after a few seconds
by Tyler on Wednesday November 30th 2011, 1:13
via Matt Pickering (I wanted to make sure this surfaced as an expanded solution)...

"Running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Had Launcher crash issues on startup until I disabled Peer-to-Peer downloading under "Downloader Preferences". Restarting the Launcher allowed the patch to be installed with no issues."

Works. Confirmed by 3 people now (including myself).

Launcher Workaround
by Dave Seff on Tuesday November 29th 2011, 20:20
I found that just running 'wine BackgroundDownloader.exe' was able to work for updating. Once completed it should play as usual.

Mouse
by Adam Zeanchock on Tuesday November 29th 2011, 20:18
Running Xubuntu 11.10 x64 @ Wine 1.3.28

Fresh game install and Distro Install

OpenGL Hardware cursor is "off" by a few pixels so the tool tips show up on the wrong buttons in game. This leads to some accidental button pressing and overall annoyance. Game is playable other than that.

When Hardware cursor is disabled the mouse cursor is flipped and I lose all control of the mouse.

Launcher.exe crashes after a few seconds
by spiralofhope on Tuesday November 29th 2011, 16:20
Reproduced under a few different versions:

- Lubuntu, wine 1.2.3
- Lubuntu, wine 1.3.28
- Unity Linux, wine 1.3.15

Running the launcher as either a user or as root will start up and begin downloading just fine, but will die shortly. The downloaded material is thrown away, so it's not possible to attempt an infinite loop and download a few megs each run between crashes.

The solution is to run it, get into the downloader options and check ON all checkboxes. Then re-run the installer and click the top-right 'x' before it crashes.

The background downloader will not crash, and will continue downloading in the background.

This is as far as I've gone. Hopefully with enough data downloaded in this manner I'll be able to download while playing or otherwise have it finish up.
