What works
Tested lan and lan play, its slow but works pretty good. The how to explains very well how to make this work.


What does not
game will still run slow, current issues include the ui just failing to work and the continue button not working at the end of a match,


What was not tested
long matches and in depth gameplay.


Additional Comments

classic game and this fix seems to work for alot of th c&c games when it comes to dealing with the annoying ipx driver.

  1. Create a new file, ra2fix.reg, somewhere in your Wine C: directory.
  2. Open the file, paste the content above into it, and save.
  3. run wine regedit and choose Registry->Import Registry File
  4. Import ra2fix.reg
  5. close regedit

If the game does not run correctly after these changes, remove them.

 

Add the following lines to ra2.ini:

VideoBackBuffer=no

Network Play

IPX is tricky, and is fortunately no longer needed. Someone has written a patch to use TCP/IP instead.
  1. Download the LAN patch from understorm.net
  2. Save it in your Red Alert 2 folder and extract it.
  3. Open winecfg or Wine->Configure Wine from the application menu.
  4. Add an overwrite rule for wsock32.

The game freezes on gaining battle control

I've installed ra2 into a clean prefix, wine version 1.4-0ubuntu1~ppa1~oneiric1.
Everything went smoothly, until I actually tried to play it. After gaining control any mouse move causes the game to freeze (music still playing) with the following console output:
err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x7deea1e0 "x11drv_main.c: X11DRV_CritSection" wait timed out in thread 0025, blocked by 0032, retrying (60 sec)

I've tried schedtool, as google suggested:
schedtool -a 0 -e wine Ra2.exe
but the results are the same.
