Description

Mists of Pandaria

Shrouded in fog since the world was sundered more than ten thousand years ago, the ancient realm of Pandaria has remained unspoiled by war. Its lush forests and cloud-ringed mountains are home to a complex ecosystem of indigenous races and exotic creatures. It is the homeland of the enigmatic Pandaren, a race that celebrates life to the fullest even while under siege by an ancient menace.

The new continent reveals itself to a broken world just as the Alliance and Horde are spiraling ever closer to a war that will consume all of Azeroth. Will the mists of Pandaria part to reveal the world's salvation? Or will the battle to control this rich and breathtaking new land push the two mighty factions over the brink of war and into total annihilation? The answers await within Pandaria's mysterious shores!

Tips & Tricks

If you are experiencing a graphical glitch where there are black holes or streaks in textures, try enabling "AlwaysOffscreen" (http://wiki.winehq.org/UsefulRegistryKeys)

wine reg add "HKCU\\Software\\Wine\\Direct3D" /v AlwaysOffscreen /d enabled

or you can use winetricks to do it for you

winetricks ao=enabled

Random lockups may be related to nvidias drivers, early versions of the 300 series had an issue with random xinput lockups. Since driver versions 304.48 these kind of lockups are fixed, driver versions earlier than 300 work too.

Nvidia users with driver version 310 or newer can use the new threaded optimization (Renderer thread is offloaded to a seperate core) on multicore boxes with

# cd PATH_TO_YOUR_WOW

# __GL_THREADED_OPTIMIZATIONS=1 WINEDEBUG=-all wine wow-64

Disabling debugging is neccessary, otherwise you will get less than 10 fps. Mileage may vary, but a increase of more than 50%  of the fps seems common. This works both in opengl and in direct3d mode.

A slightly hacky way to get WoW to run on multiple threads.

Still testing to find bugs.

In the Config.wtf file you add:

SET processAffinityMask "x"

X being a value in a set of values to allow a certain amount of threads for WoW to make.

The values for X are to the amount of threads it makes are:

cores                  values:

1                         1
 2                         3
 3                         7
 4                        15
 5                        31

Mouse tooltip not working
by Christoffer on Monday March 4th 2013, 14:34
When logging in and opening eg. my bags, the tooltip doesn't work for any of the items. The same happens for the mailbox, addon selection and probably any other place where tooltips are used.
When clicking on an item, the item is selected as usual, and the tooltip is opened and won't go away before actually clicking on it.

I'm currently using Wine 1.5.25, and will do some testing to see if I can figure it out. The terminal doesn't show anything special, and disabling all addons doesn't work either. Just wanted to let others know in case anyone else is facing the same issue.

Launcher update failing
by Bheku on Saturday December 15th 2012, 3:47
Had MoP working up until a few days ago on Ubuntu 11.04.

Now launcher update seems broken. I start WoW via command line and I can see that there's stuff happening because of the debug output. But progress meter not moving. Not sure as yet what patch changes this relates to.

Anyone having any trouble with the launcher lately?

WoW installer
by Chris Brennan on Wednesday November 28th 2012, 20:32
I got this working a long time ago and on a different flavor or linux. Currently, my system is as follows:

[ chris@Phaëton chris]$ uname -a
Linux Phaëton.xaerolimit.net 3.6.2-4.fc17.x86_64 #1 SMP Wed Oct 17 02:43:21 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
[ chris@Phaëton chris]$ wine --version
wine-1.5.17
[ chris@Phaëton chris]$

Video is a sandybridge gpu. I installed everything listed via winetricks (starting w/ a fresh ~/.wine dir) and when I run the downloader I get the following imgur.com/JeXax. Not really sure what to do next...

Mouse won't click?
by Brett on Thursday November 15th 2012, 15:22
Hey, I'm trying to get WOW working again with wine 1.4.2 and it installed when I did the agent.exe startup,

When I run the Wow-64bit, the ELUA comes up and is about 1/3 of my screen size. I can't click on it to scroll down to accept it. I'm sure I can fix the resolution once I'm in game, but is there any fix or known issue where you can't get the mouse click to stick? Thanks!

Also, whats better? Running winetricks to install d3d9 or changing wow to use opengl? And if its opengl, do I need to change anything in wow conf files?

nvidia optimus - USE PRIMUS
by Anders Aa. on Sunday November 11th 2012, 3:23
If you have a nvidia optimus setup and use bumblebee/virtualgl, use primus-git instead! It's MILES faster. (In a highly unscientific test of sitting in orgrimar with default graphics setups on my rig, I went from 7fps to 35fps).

Note that I couldn't get it working with -opengl, but it works fine with directx.

Crash after the first loading screen
by Johel on Sunday October 14th 2012, 19:03
My WoW crashes after selecting my character and the loading screen reaches 100%.
"The program Wow.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
"This can be caused by a problem in the program or a deficiency in Wine. You may want to check appdb.winehq.org for tips about running this application."

I just downloaded the game 100%, but have been trying to solve it for the past two days while downloading it. In the meantime I read a lot of tutorials and I believe everything is just fine, as well as my hardware.

Any idea? All the help is appreciated.

P.D.: I use to get the same error while creating a character and clicking the 'Customize' botton, but fixed it with some help I found in a tutorial (1.sudo apt-get install driconf 2.sudo driconf 3.'Image Quality' tab > Activate 'S3TC texture'

How to replicate:
I self-compile my wine, but these will work on distro-released versions aswell.

1. Install via winetricks: vcrun2005/2008/2010 vcrun6
2. Wineboot -u
3. Install via Winetricks: dotnet20 dotnet40 flash11 ie7
4. Wineserver -k
5. Wineboot
6. Install via Winetricks: ie8 mfc42
7. Wineserver -k
8. Wineboot
9. Install via Winetricks d3dx9_36 d3dx9_39 directplay
10. Wineboot -u
11. Install via winetricks: corefonts fontfix liberation
12. Wineboot
13. Winecfg change windows version from Win 2000 to Win xp
14. Play wow.

Use the 'beta' winetricks version if you run into problems with release, not sure if release has been updated yet or not.
If you follow those instructions and donot run into any errors along the way you will have a working wine that can run wow in DX9 mode with max settings.

I am using Wine 1.5.12 compiled from source from winehq.com and un-patched.

Research on Graphic Issues
by Martin Schaub on Saturday October 13th 2012, 8:43
Hello all,

I did some research on the graphic issues on the current WoW Release MoP 5.0.5b. (Build 16135) (Release x86)

First of all the issues with the not displayed arrow in the world map,
the not correctly displayed char preview are an issue of the OpenGL Version of the WoW Windows client. The Mac Version is not affected and renders the whole game in OpenGL so there is nothing to fix for the wine team on this one.

Although there is an issue with the D3D mode in wine resulting in black screens after a short period of time playing using Ubuntu 12.04.1 64 bit with wine-1.5.15 (in 32 bit mode).
The Drivers are:
Nvidia 295.49

The GFX Hardware is:
Nvidia Geforce GT 530

This issues have nothing to do with liquid detail level nor sundshafts.

After a short period of time the whole gaming window turns black then you enter a specific angle with the camera, if you manage to find an camera angle that is exact or near the setting the screen turned black, the screen mainly or sometimes completely reappears, when you change the angle of the camera again to another setting the screen gets black again.

Here is a small output snippet of wine:

fixme:d3d:resource_check_usage Unhandled usage flags 0x8.
err:d3d:resource_init Out of adapter memory

so I guess this is a known issue to the team.

So currently there is only the option to play this game on OpenGL mode.

Best Regards,

Martin

Won't retrieve patch info
by Don Koch on Saturday October 6th 2012, 8:13
System info: Fedora 16, x86_64.
Running Wow.exe directly under wine-1.5.14-208-g6b5b737 (and older versions) just hangs. After doing some snooping, I find that it has asked for patch info but won't read it.

It connects to their server on port 1119 and sends the request. The server sends the response back in two packets, a normal PSH,ACK and a FIN,PSH,ACK. It appears that the first packet is read, but the second isn't, the socket being left in a close_wait state with 490 bytes left in the receive queue (packet data is 489 bytes).

Anyone else seen this?

I experienced the issue where tooltips wouldn't show up except when actually clicking on the thing you want to see. I was able to "fix" it by switching from Unity to Unity 2D (on Ubuntu 12.04).

Most likely, doing something similar (switching to GNOME Classic with no effects, for example) will accomplish the same thing on non-Ubuntu systems.

I suspect the real problem is an interaction between Wine's 3D support and compositing managers like Compiz.

Keyboard and mouse randomly stop responding
by James A. Gilmore II on Monday September 17th 2012, 4:16
I've had this problem where randomly during play, usually during activities with increased key-pressing (such as PvP or tanking a dungeon), the keyboard and mouse will suddenly stop responding.

I don't have any error reports or logs because once this happens I can't regain control of my computer and I end up having to reset the machine.

The machine itself is still responsive; events continue to happen in the game world. It's just that pressing keys or using the mouse has no effect.

This occurs using OpenGL or DirectX. I am currently using Wine 1.5.12. I am running the 64-bit game client in a 64-bit wineprefix, on 64-bit Arch Linux 3.5.3.

Launcher not downloading anything (if it starts at all)
by Sir Robin on Saturday September 15th 2012, 1:15
After struggling with the new Agent.exe for a while the updater kind of broke for me: it would always just complain about not being able to read one of the games files.

I made sure no other wine-stuff was running, that it could access those files,... no luck.

So I just tried to reinstall (and re-download) the game from scratch, but after creating all the files the Launcher is stuck on 0% and doesn't download anything as far as I can tell.
Turning peer-to-peer on or off didn't seem to change anything, but I can't say for sure.

It doesn't crash and all buttons are functional- it just doesn't actually DO anything.

I had that issue with some earlier patches too, and there temporarily reverting to an old wine-version (1.3.something, the one in the SUSE-repos) or using the background downloader would let me patch, but with 5.0.5 the launcher just crashes on me if I try that version, and the background downloader is gone.

I already tried a clean wineprefix a couple of common winetricks (though I have no clue which ones could actually help), and on one try (with a clean, vanilla prefix) it actually downloaded about 100 mb of files - over the course of half an hour, and then it stopped doing anything again.

Massive lag / audio glitching - very slow drawing
by Darkclaw on Friday September 7th 2012, 12:58
Hi All,

I've upgraded a laptop and a pc both from Ubuntu 10.04 to 12.04 and wine from 1.2.3. to wine 1.5.12. Both ran WoW previously, but wouldn't upgrade. The laptop upgraded and works wow perfectly - the PC is a disaster!! (I know different spec, but both use Nvidia graphics)

I've tried everything on the PC to get WoW going - my first error was trying to install Wine 1.5 on 10.04.

Anyway - I have clean installed 12.04 and WINE 1.5.12 - I copied WOw across and it ran - but barely. The sound lags and the screen takes ages to render graphics. If I change form -nothing happens for around 20seconds. The situation seems to get mildy better after a few minutes but is unusable.

My system: AMD Phenom Black II, 4GB ram, Nvidia GTS450 (Drivers: 295.40) I have added the OpenGL and Sound options into the WTF file.

When running Wow it reports 50fps, but also massive latency on top of the slow slow rendering. The laptop using the same router is perfect - so it isnt a network issue (?)

Any help would be so greatly appreciated.

Upgrade to 5.0.4
by Gerhard on Friday August 31st 2012, 2:17
Starting off with my system. I am running a Intel i5, NVidia GTX560 Ti graphics with 4GB RAM under Ubuntu 12.04LTS (Wine 1.4 + winetricks dx3d9 vcrun2009 IE7). I'm new to Linux so please advise where I make any mistakes

I couldn't upgrade from 4.3 by using Launcher.exe ( wine Launcher.exe ) as it would crash. I tried the BackgroudDownloader.exe (Peer-to-Peer Disabled) but that would also crash after a while. On a US forum I saw a post about Agent.exe and it's problems. His workaround was to first run the latest Agent.exe with wine Agent.exe --nohttpauth & and then start the Launcher.exe with normal wine Launcher.exe.
Already having the TempMig downloads of about 6GB the Update tools then downloaded after a long while and then the new launcher popped up. This downloaded about 450MB with my temperature warning going off at one stage. Configuration took just over an hour to complete.

After all went over smoothly I could get to the login screen but WoW said I was trying to login to the wrong region. Closed WoW and checked my conf.wtf file and it changed to enUS. Also noted that the opengl setting was missing. Edited the conf file and ran wine Wow-64.exe working great.

Problems I have are that Outland area does not work but this seems to be a general problem even in Windows. Also the dressing room and Windowed (haven't tried full screen) map do not show the upper part. I can see my characters feet but that's about it. If I zoom in with scroll the character goes outside the boundaries of the dressing room window.
Open and closing the map alot also seemed to break it as I can see the flight path icons and buttons at the bottom, but no window borders or map image would show. This also happens sometimes to bags but leaving it for a while makes it pop up again.
Hope this helps.

Dressing room graphics
by jeremy on Thursday August 30th 2012, 16:13
It would seem the dressing room graphics do not display for me with version 5.0.4.

I'm using the 304.43 nVidia drivers on a Geforce 470 under Ubuntu 12.04.

Character Preview cut in half
by Iridias on Thursday August 30th 2012, 15:32
I just copied my updated windows-version of WoW and it works fine with OpenGL (using NVidia) - even with the old version 1.3.37 of wine.

The only problem I have is, that the upper half (or rather upper third) of the character-preview is missing. Looks really weird.

Anyone having the same issue?

Had no issues with installing or playing the update on Wine 1.5.11 with an AMD 6850. I get identical performance with no changes. Install as you would 4.x.

Note to posterity: this is the pre-expansion patch and things may be different when Mists actually lands.

5.0 update - FC17 wine 1.5.11
by Alistair on Tuesday August 28th 2012, 18:17
No comments on the updated game, I'm still waiting for the Launcher to "Optimize" my game files -- it appears to be unpacking the game update -- in 6 threads and painfully slowly .... will update when I'm ready to play.....

5.x Failure?
by James Whiteley on Tuesday August 28th 2012, 14:33
Is anyone having success getting the client to update with vanilla 1.4.2 wine?

Admittedly, I'm using crossover at the moment, but I'm curious to hear from fellow Wow players on their successes/failures to determine (potentially) how deep the root cause may exist.

Thanks.

First Impressions
by andrew m on Thursday July 5th 2012, 1:31
I just installed the beta client, and here are my thoughts after 5 minutes in-game:

1) Installation worked fine with WINE 1.5.7 on Ubuntu 12.04. P2P and all worked just fine, and no issues to speak of other than the lack of alpha support (same old black border around the window).

2) Performance in Orgrimmar was normal, or slightly better than 4.3.

3) Performance in Pandaria was god awful (

Debian SID 64 workaround
by Kernelpanic on Saturday April 21st 2012, 10:59
First, I upgrade my wine to the last beta "1.5.2",
but I still get problem with the agent.exe,
so I found that is it is the same for diablo 3 beta.(appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=25588)

I patch the source, and now, I am able to join the beta.

I can provide additional information if wanted/needed, let me know.

Crash on character selection
by Chris McIntyre on Monday April 16th 2012, 15:37
I get a crash on character selection. I can provide a backtrace if needed. I have an ATI Radeon HD 4600 with the FGLRX 12.1 drivers and wine 1.4 installed on Ubuntu 12.04. Regular WoW works perfectly fine. Let me know what else I can provide. I'm also going to try a few other things, so I'll keep this up to date.

Wine 1.5
by Michiel on Monday April 2nd 2012, 0:03
Things seem to work a bit easier with wine 1.5.0, although the Agent has to be started manually to avoid errors.

However during playing I see "smearing" on my screen. This can be caused by having to paint (too) many polygons, as there were big clusters of new players in this Pandaren starting area ;-)

Failed to open firewall
by Meghan Pietila on Saturday March 31st 2012, 16:22
Trying on Ubuntu 11.10 using Wine 1.4, but when I attempt to run the Agent.exe manually, it never gets started; I get this error:

Agent started on port #6883
Executing operation: disable_firewall applicationPath="C:\users\Public\Application Data\Battle.net\Agent\Agent.749\Agent.exe" applicationName="Blizzard Agent"
fixme:hnetcfg:fw_profile_get_NotificationsDisabled 0x13e850, 0x32f7f4
AgentAsAdmin failed to add a firewall exception for 'C:\users\Public\Application Data\Battle.net\Agent\Agent.749\Agent.exe'.
Registered Event: "shutdown event"
Registered Event: "database flush event"

Sometimes it spends a few minutes looping and retrying, but I never seem to get past this point. Never get the World of Warcraft Beta Launcher.exe file appearing in my Program Files directory; I assume the Agent.exe is supposed to download that if it starts correctly?

Googling on the firewall error only gets me some Windows users on the Blizz forums that are having the error for Diablo III, and it seems in their case that it truly is proxy or firewall issues. Any ideas would be welcome. I'll post if I find a workaround.

We do have high latency, spotty DSL service in the mountains (1-3 seconds currently), I wondered if Blizz just thinks we've got a firewall blocking because of the latency.
