It looks like the main menus background animation triggers the crash.
I could get it to work with MS DX9 devenum.dll and amstream.dll
My OS is FreeBSD 9.0.

I tried a few various techniques for trying to get X3AP to start up. Of note is that X3TC functions correctly from a vanilla wineprefix, while I have so far been unsuccessful in getting past the X3AP splash screen before the game crashes.

I've tried both 64 and 32 versions of WINEARCH, and have backtraces for both. (db.tt/3MW825cJ and db.tt/Gw8jtIIK respectively).

I've tried the wine setup steps for X3TC -- see appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=25327 -- to install the various codecs and media applications, but that only resulted in the game launcher crashing before I could even start the game.

I also tried modifying all the possible graphics options in the launcher before starting the game, and was able to get further by selecting windowed mode rather than fullscreen, but regardless of the other settings, the game would still crash.

At this point, I'm not sure what else to try. I don't see anything obvious from the backtraces, other than it being a serious error. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm more than happy to try them. In the mean time, I'll just continue booting up my Win7 box to play this game...
