I tried CS2 9.0. Installed on windows partition and took program files and put on ext3 partition. Started and screen pops up and where the flash display usually is was just the letters telling it what loaded. I waited for about 5 minutes and it got to the second loading process which there is about 500 in windows it goes so fast you cant usually see it. It may work and just take a long time to start I did not feel like waiting that long.
Windows-->Workspace-->Reset Palette Locations is your friend
Keeping Photoshop in it's own desktop can prevent some of the overlapping windows issues with other programs. (Bug #11412)
If Photoshop keeps ignoring the filename you type in while saving as a jpeg, select the filename field again and press Home on the keyboard. You should be able to proceed with the correct filename.
If Save For Web... doesn't work, use Save As.. and set the filetype to jpeg or png.

You shouldn't have to copy Photoshop from Windows; just install
it under Wine by running its "setup.exe" into Photoshop CS2 (R) Directory. "Setup.exe" don't work for Wine's Versions > 1.0. (To run a .exe under wine,
you have to doubleclick it, right click and choose "Run with Wine",
or run it from the commandline using the 'wine' command, depending
on how your Linux distribution integrates Wine.)
Never use a cracked version of Photoshop.
Never run Wine as root.
Use a recent version of Wine (1.0.1 or later). 1.1.0 recommended.
Some UI elements might use a too-small font. In CS2, you can fix this with Edit / Preferences / General, and change UI Font Size from Small to Medium. Restart Photoshop.
The Clone tool uses the ALT key in a way that conflicts with
many window managers. Here's how to fix that:
Ubuntu: System / Windows / Movement Key, and pick "Super" instead of "Alt".
Kubuntu: K / System Settings / Look and Feel / Windows / Movement Key, and pick "Super" instead of "Alt"
Suse with Gnome: Computer / Control Center / Look and Feel / Windows / Movement Key, and pick "Super" instead of "Alt"
Fedora 8 Gnome: System / Preferences / Look and Feel / Windows / Movement Key, and pick "Super" instead of "Alt
Suse with KDE: Gecko / Favorites / Configure Desktop / Desktop / Window Behavior / Window Actions / "Inner Window, Titlebar & Frame" , and pick "Meta" instead of "Alt"
Earlier KDE: KDE Control Center / Desktop / Window Behavior / Window Actions / turn off the alt-combos.
If photoshop was working and now you get this message: "You are not allowed to continue because your accountdoes not have the proper privileges.
Please log in using an account with administrator privileges and try again." Restarting your computer usually fixes this. If photoshop gives you this message the first time you run it, you probably have a different issue. (To explore further, read this, this, and this.)
ALT-Click keybinding and Compiz

I was having problems with the Photoshop 7 ALT-Click keybinding in a new Debian install running Compiz. I did the standard window manager tweak but it still didn't work properly. Then I discovered an ALT-Click keybinding in the Compiz Window Management > Move Window > Initiate Window Move settings. I changed it to 'super' like in Gnome window management and voila, it seemed to get it working again in Photoshop. You might want to add that bit of info to the clone tool info on the Photoshop 7 page.

CS2 & wine 1.3.28 the problem:

is still there.
It usually triggers when Photoshop started then closed and re-started again. The fix with
#winserver -k
works but it kills all the started wine applications and to use photoshop you got to restart them all.
I found that
#wineboot -i
would fix this problem without any need to restart all the windows applications.

I all so had the similar problem with wine 1.3.27 and CS2 after install it popped with "Please log in using an account with administrator privileges and try again"
Can't get Adobe Photoshop CS2 to uninstall..

I recently installed photoshop cs2 using wine and I got an error the 2nd time opening it saying
"Adobe Activation- You are not allowed to continue because your accountdoes not have the proper privileges. Please log in using an account with administrator privileges and try again."
So I tried to go and uninstall it using the software for wine, and while it's uninstalling it keeps spamming that error message and won't fully uninstall photoshop. Is there a way I can go in and manually delete the files?

I'm running Wine on a AMD 64 machine, I got wine 1.1.38,
My Ubuntu is the Karmic Koala 9.10
After a photoshop Cs2 installation I noticed that the program was not working( due to activation rights bug ). At that stage I wanted to uninstall it from wine: no way.
It tells me to uninstall without any problem but after I go through the process it doesn't remove anything.

If you've installed DCOM98 through Winetools [Note: I did it for ZBrush 3.1], it adds 3 DLL exceptions to wine for you: ole32, oleaut32, and rprt4. Those DLL's apparently break CS2's keyboard shortcuts. The culprit DLL is "rpcrt4". I removed this exception (winecfg -> libraries -> remove rpcrt4) and shortcuts are working again with the latest Xorg [xorg-server 1.6.3.901 at this time] and Wine [1.1.30 at this time]. It also fixed a new error nag that showed up on photoshop's startup. Removing all 3 DLL's doesn't seem to cause any harm, but also doesn't seem to be necessary. Proceed as you think best.
CS2 with compiz doesn't recognize ctrl+click and shift+click

I didn't filled a bug report because I don't know if this is a Wine or a Compiz bug. When using Photoshop CS2 with compiz activated, I can't use ctrl+click neither shift+click. I usually do this on the layers.
When I disable Compiz, the shortcuts work, but preference windows lose the correct z-index, and I don't know wich bug is most annoying =P
It only occurring after an upgrade to Ubuntu 9.04. With earlier versions, everything just worked fine. I tested this with two computers, both using the proprietary Nvidia drivers (one with legacy drivers).
I already tried to disable every option on Compizconfig Settings Manager and nothing solve the issue. It only disappear when I disable Compiz entirely. Someone have this problem too? There's a workaround? Thanks!

running on an hp m9500t. am a long-time mac user starting to use linux due to an unsupported apple platform crash.
i have to say one of the reasons i chose to abandon apple for linux was the seemingly overoptimistic representation of using photoshop cs2 as a kind of anchor in photography/graphics in a less than robust linux graphics toolbox.
the install was faster than any adobe photoshop install in mac i've ever experienced, if not a little peculiar.
i can't access my vista drive yet, since i've installed linux on a separate drive, and hp doesn't offer an additional sata power cable internally...so my browse/bridge issue is still pending.
i haven't yet found any reasonable explanation how i might overcome the multiple monitor image cut-off issue. additionally, moving the image about on the screen causes windows to fracture and multiply which isn't going to make me enthusiastic about trying to use this for some kind of professional use.

Running Wine 1.0.1 on Ubuntu 9.04 i686.
The easiest solution I've found to fix the 'Administrator account privileges' problem is to kill the wineserver (wineserver -k) and start Photoshop again. Much simpler than other solutions.
Browse and maximize within main window does not work as reported, but I'm overall very very happy with the stability!

I have Photoshop CS2 installed on Jaunty i386 also with Wine version 1.1.20 and I definitely would've rated it higher than gold. Also, you said the updater doesn't work. I have a video below of it WORKING for me!

I'm trying to figure why no shortcut keys are working for me. No ctrl-z, no [] for brush sizes etc. Everything else I find manageable but no ctrl-z and [] are killing me. I'm disabled and the keyboard is much easier for me than all that mousing about. I haven't found them listed as bugs but I may be looking in the wrong places. My alt key does work for the heal tool.

My info panel is split into four section, dealing with colour and measurements, the bottom two sections which specifically deal with measurements such as size of selection, and position of cursor from origin is missing its 'Y' values, these appear to be cut off as the height of this panel is too short, and cannot be resized.
Crash due to missing font or corrupted settings file.

I recently came across a post (circa jan-feb 2008) where a user had encountered a fatal and unrecoverable crash when starting Photoshop for the second or subsequent time.
I've noticed that this issue has happened to many people, myself included while installing it on someone's system today, and that, while there is a short-term workaround (noted below), nobody has yet posted an actual permanent fix for the problem. I worked one out this afternoon, and thought I'd share it with you all, in order to prevent frustration for anyone out there I can help.
Here is my synopsis, as detailed as I can make it:
Problem: Adobe Photoshop CS2 crashes upon startup with an unrecoverable hardware error. This error occurs on the second and subsequent starts.
Symptoms: After loading plugins, tools, brushes, etc., the program halts with the error message "Unable to continue because of a hardware or system error. Sorry, but this error is unrecoverable." Clicking OK results in hard crash.
Affected systems: Windows (any), and in Linux or Mac while running under Wine or Crossover Office. Who cares about Windows, let's discuss Wine and Crossover under Linux.
Diagnosis: This problem is related to a settings file that is created and modified each time Photoshop runs and exits.
Quick Fix: You can force Photoshop CS2 to start by holding down CTRL+ALT+SHIFT while starting the application in Windows or Linux, or Command+Option+Shift in Mac OSX. You will be presented with a dialog box that asks if you wish to delete the settings file. Selecting Yes will delete the file, and allow the application to start as normal.
PERMANENT FIX: The permanent fix is actually very simple. The problematic file is the General Settings file, "Adobe Photoshop CS2 Prefs.psp", which references the default fonts Adobe expects to be installed. If for any reason these fonts, or any other files, are not installed or not functioning as expected, the application will terminate to the desktop. This settings file is located here:
Naturally, replace [USER PROFILE] with the user name you are working under, and replace the CS2 INSTALLATION BOTTLE NAME with whatever you named the bottle you installed Photoshop CS2 under in Crossover.
Now, if you've encountered this error, you've already run CS2 twice, and the settings file has already been created and corrupted. Although deleting it will allow you to start CS2, it will again store a corrupted file when you exit the application, and next time you start the application, you'll repeat the same fatal error as usual.
So, having located this file, perform the following steps:
(1) Rename or delete the corrupted file
(2) Start CS2. It should start just fine.
(3) IMMEDIATELY after it has started, change the permissions on the newly re-created settings file (Adobe Photoshop CS2 Prefs.psp) to READ ONLY. You can do this in your file browser, or, if you are at the command line, use the following command:
chmod -w ./Adobe\ Photoshop\ CS2\ Prefs.psp
(4) Rejoice. Your work here is done.
Now, whenever CS2 exits, it will no longer overwrite the fresh, working settings file, and you will always be able to start it without the annoying error and subsequent crash.

Selection cannot be moved by cursor keys

Normally, in Photoshop, when you make a selection (Marqee tool, laso or whatever) you can move it using cursor keyt. (It moves just the selection, not the part of picture selected). But in Wine 1.0 rc4 nothing moves.
Also keyboard shortcuts do not work (e. g. Ctrl-Z - Undo, ...)
Picture manipulation is very slow in Wine if Compiz is turned on.

Hopefully this helps to whoever might have the same problem:
Clone tool will refuse to work when clicking alt on an image (defining a source point) which brings up the adobe error dialog about needing to define a source point. This will occur even if the 'alt' key is switched for the 'super' key in system/preferences/windows.
Workaround: Create a layer image (if you haven't done so) and then trash a layer image. The 'alt' key will then work again with the clone tool. Another thing that might work immediately is to use the right-hand alt key instead of the left when using the clone tool for the first time.
There might have been fixes for these problems in more recent versions of wine, in which case someone let me know ;)
