Final Fantasy XI is the first online Final Fantasy RPG from Square Enix.

All 2-d graphics, to include text, are displayed as mono-colored rectangular blocks, for reasons unknown to me. I will be looking into this further as time avails itself.


What was not tested
Actual Gameplay was not possible due to flaws in the graphical subsystem. Cause unknown.


Additional Comments

I am Pandoraxero, of the 2008 FFXI-wine project. Noting that the state of this package has fallen to unacceptable levels of inoperability, I have decided to return.
I am giving this a bronze rating because the game DOES load. and its screens ARE visible... just completely incomprehensible.

HOWTO - Final Fantasy XI: The Ultimate Collection 2011

Introduction


This HOWTO will help you get Final Fantasy XI setup on your machine using "The Ultimate Collection 2011" retail package, or equivalent media. Here you will also find a guide to get the PlayOnline Viewer running. This HOWTO is complete to the best knowledge of its creators, however, there may be some errors that have not been resolved.


Please note that in order to run this game, you will most likely NEED the proprietary drivers for your graphics card(s). Open-source drivers are known to have problems with 3D rendering, and may render many things incorrectly or slowly. Please bear this in mind when submitting test results, as well.

Installation

  • Insert "The Ultimate Collection 2011" dvd into your dvd drive.
  • In a terminal session, type in "wine /path/to/dvdrom/PlayOnline/setup.exe".
  • From here, you will be guided by a setup wizard. Choosing all defaults is acceptable.
  • After the PlayOnline Viewer is finished installing, click finish on the wizard if you haven't done so already.
  • Type in "cd/path/to/dvdrom/INST1" to go into the install directory for Final Fantasy XI.
  • Type in "wine setup.exe".
  • A wizard will appear that will guide you through setting up Final Fantasy XI. Again, choosing all defaults is acceptable.
  • After installation is complete for Final Fantasy XI, you may be given a choice to restart your machine. Choose "No, I will restart my machine later" and click finish.
  • From here, type in "cd/path/to/dvdrom/INST2".
  • Type in "wine setup.exe".
  • Follow the wizard for setting up Rise of the Zilart, choosing all defaults, and selecting to restart your computer later, if prompted.
  • Type in "cd/path/to/dvdrom/INST3".
  • Type in "wine setup.exe".
  • Follow the wizard for setting up Chains of Promathia, choosing all defaults, and selecting to restart your computer later, if prompted.
  • Type in "cd/path/to/dvdrom/INST4".
  • Type in "wine setup.exe".
  • Follow the wizard for setting up Treasures of AhtUrhgan, choosing all defaults, and selecting to restart your computer later if prompted.
  • Type in "cd/path/to/dvdrom/INST5".
  • Type in "wine setup.exe".
  • Follow the wizard for setting up Wings of the Goddess, choosing all defaults, and selecting to restart your computer later if prompted.
  • You may now umount your installation media. Be sure to store it in a safe place.

Overriding DXDIAGN.DLL

  • Obtain a copy of the file "Dxdiagn.dll" from a Windows XP install (It'll be in the System32 Directory)
  • Copy said file into your WINE installation (.wine), place it either in the Windows folder or the System32 folder, either is fine.
  • Open a terminal and navigate to the directory you placed Dxdiagn.dll into.
  • Run the following command: "wine regsvr32 dxdiagn.dll". Additionally try running "wine regsvr dxdiagn.dll".
  • Open winecfg and navigate to the overrides.
  • Set a new override for Dxdiagn.
  • You should be set to go.

Configuring/Updating/Running

  • Here the PlayOnline Viewer will be updated. Follow the instructions to update the viewer.
  • After PlayOnline Viewer is updated, the viewer will ask you to click next to restart it. Do so, and PlayOnline Viewer Should restart.
  • Once logged in, you may run Final Fantasy XI. It will be updated upon running them for the first time, this is the perfect opportunity to eat some cheesecake, because the initial update could take hours. Do note that if you have registered the registration codes for any of the Abyssea expansions it will be automatically downloaded and installed in the update.
  • Once the update has completed, Final Fantasy XI should launch with your desired settings.
  • Go to a heavily populated area, and type "/yell Final Fantasy XI Runs In Linux!!" into Final Fantasy, and press Enter

Running more than one instance of FFXI:

  • In a shell do: 
    WINEPREFIX="/home/$USER/.wine-second" wine /path/to/first/full/FFXI/Install/pol.exe
  • This will create a new instance directory for wine in your home folder. It will be named .wine-second
  • You will get a few errors. You can dismiss all of them.
  • Use your favourite file handling utility and copy the complete PlayOnline folder from your previous (/home/yourname/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/) wine instance to your new instance. (Yes you will need two installs of FFXI for this to work)
  • Make sure you copy your original install from it's root folder in the Program Files directory to the Program Files directory of your new wine instance. The folder named PlayOnline is all you need to copy.
  • Now you should have one original install in: 
    /home/yourname/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/PlayOnline/
and one copy of that install in:
/home/yourname/.wine-second/drive_c/Program Files/PlayOnline/
  • In a shell do: 
    regedit
  • Now make sure that the root of the registry is selected in the tree structure on the left hand side. In English the root is called 'My Computer'
  • Now click the following sequence in the Regedit menu bar:
    'Registry -> Export registry file'
  • Select a location to save your registry export. (Suggest saving to desktop for easy removal after you are done)
  • Close the registry editor.
  • In a shell do: 
    WINEPREFIX="/home/$USER/.wine-second" regedit
  • You are now editing the registry information for your new instance of wine.
  • Once again; select the root of the registry (My Computer). Then click the following sequence in the registry editor:
    'Registry -> Import registry file'
  • Select the file you saved in the previous regedit instance. (The one I suggested you save to your desktop)
  • Once the file has been imported... (might take a while depending on size of registry) you are ready to start using two instances of FFXI at the same time on the same computer.
  • You may now delete the .reg file that you saved to your desktop.
  • To start the first instance of FFXI use: 
    wine /path/to/first/full/FFXI/Install/pol.exe
  • To start the second instance of FFXI use: 
    WINEPREFIX="/home/$USER/.wine-second" wine /path/to/copy/of/full/FFXI/Install/pol.exe
  • The default path to an install is: /home/username/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/PlayOnline/
  • This guide is crude and in an initial stage. In time it will be optimised.

Other Recommendations/Info:

  • Disabling shadows altogether causes a speedup.
  • Desktop Effects (Compiz) should be disabled if flickering of the screen occurs.
  • Please use the latest version of wine if possible, if not, there is a list of known working versions at the bottom of this guide.

dxdiagn.dll

On a hunch, I decided to switch to the builtin dxdiagn.dll ... guess what? It works perfectly. so it seems the override it no longer needed. Guess if you give a project five years, these things happen.

So, lets see, total number of changes to be made to the howto:
WINEARCH=win32 for 64-bit systems
dxdiagn.dll
Seekers of Adoulin needs to be added in

Things that are still issues:
Shadows, the glow box for fireplaces and whatnot, strobing effect on some lamps, the defocus/refocus gamepad glitches in windowed mode, also, oversampling (setting the background res higher than the overlay res) seems to have no effect.

All in all, the game is VERY playable. Thus far, I've had no real issues with it. Worthy of Silver, possibly Gold... not Platinum, though... at least not until the problems mentioned above get fixed.

Virtual Desktop and Gamepad Bug

OK, so I decided I was going to try the FFXI Windowed mode... and when the window loses focus, then regains focus? the sticks on my gamepad become either maxed or zero'd ... can't tell which, but I'm willing to put money on them being zero'd

Interestingly enough, this same thing does NOT happen when using Virtual desktop. Also, in VDesk, the gamepad retains its focus on the window. ...I have no definite explanation for this difference in function, but I can reasonably surmise that, since the windowed mode was NOT built to retain focus, it simply lets go of the gamepad when it loses focus, versus the VDesk mode, where the game THINKS it still has focus, but, in truth, does not. I mean... that IS the way FFXI was designed.

Workaround for Bug 29968

Going to post this in the actual bug and my next test report shortly, but while trying to find a remedy for another issue I stumbled across a workaround to the long-standing issue of FFXI crashing when exiting or returning to POL:

-Install a native version of msctf.dll
-Go into winecfg, create a new override for msctf and set it to "native"

FFXI will now /shutdown and return to POL on /logout without crashing. (Tested on 1.5.29, might work on previous versions.)

FFXI on ubuntu 12.04

Finally got it working, thought I'd share it, hopefully saving someone from hours of tweaking and searching for how to.
First off: error 1628, it doesn't install. I think it is caused by 64-bit system. Solved it with 32-bit prefix, something like:WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=/path/to/wineprefix winecfg. Install and run game from there, I do it through terminal. Then I got sound issue, install pulseaudio control settings (sp?) and tell not to use HDMI acceleration. I needed additional pulseaudio -k to get it work.
Next up, mouse and keyboard wouldn't run in fullscreen. Mouse: tick for hardware mouse from FFXI config, for fullscreen to work, I needed to install Compiz Config Settings Manager and enable "Legacy fullscreen support". Also needed to set WINE to Vista from winecfg with options off for letting program manage windows.
Finishing touch was hiding Unity-toolbar: System Settings ->Appereance->Function(sp?)->hide on.

OK, trying to set up FFXI on a new late-2012 iMac (base model).

2.7 i5
8 GB ram
NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M 512 MB

Got it all installed, no problem. Got POL running, connected updated. Got FFXI updated, awesome. FFXI loads up, sweet. Pass the disclaimer screen, click accept...

Boom, fail!

Error: FFXI 3101
Cannot connect to server

Weird, considering I can connect to POL fine. Scoured the web for solutions or someone else with this problem but no dice.

I'm thinking is there some PORT or network setting I can tweak inside wine?

I'm so greatful for any help, I'm dying to get this game going on my iMac.

FFXI & Ubuntu 12.04

As i played FFXI with wine via steam on Ubuntu 11.10, i upgrade this morning my distro to 12.04 with a downgrade of xorg (askubuntu.com/questions/164054/correct-way-to-install-nvidia-173-driver-on-ubuntu-12-04), it seems working :

* steam is running
* PlayOnlineViewer running
* Game is starting, i play 5 mins on it

I'll test it and post back.

Okay, so I think I figured out what the is causing my problem below, but need some help.

It seems that when FFXI closes improperly, or the wine folder is tampered with (either one) there is a chance that the registry key for Wine will get messed up in regards to POL. I've been trying to fiddle with the registry that I have to get it to work again, but can't figure out what the infringing line(s) is(are). If anyone can send me their registry from wine with a functioning FFXI install (preferably one installed with through steam so they're as close as possible) I would really appreciate it.

I'll update this if I can find anything.

POL Opens, but doesn't display

I have been playing FFXI on Wine (ubuntu) for about 2 weeks. Suddenly, it just stopped working. I have no idea why. I used the "shut down" option in game, and now I cannot open the game. I am playing via steam, but, as I said, that was not a problem before.

I will launch FFXI, and POL will initiate. The screen draws a box where POL is going to show up, but that disappears, and nothing is rendered. No window shows up. I can hear the menu music for the POL log-in screen, but the window itself doens't show up. My only option is to open up the system monitor and terminate the POL.exe application.

The first time this happened (yesterday) I ended up completely reinstalling wine, Steam, and FFXI. That fixed the problem for 3 play sessions. Today, I shut down FFXI, and the problem came back. I reset the computer, to no avail.

Originally, I was running FFXI on Wine1.4. When the problem came back, I upgraded to 1.5.12, which didn't fix the problem.

Please help. I just want to play my damn game.

black screen after character selection

After selecting my character, the screen fades to black and stays black while the music keeps playing. Wine only has these two warnings (the first one written over and over):

I've tried choosing windows 7, windows vista, windows 2008 in my winecfg. It does not make a difference. I'm using wine 1.4 on 64 bit linux mint 13.

I've already overcome the problem of blocky text and weird textures by installing ia32-libs-libtxc-dxtn0. The regular 64-bit version did not help.

Any help is appreciated,

FFXI on mac installation failure

Hi everyone,

I have followed the guide on the following link (killingifrit.com/forums/topic/184046-guide-for-ffxi-on-mac/) but I couldn't finish installing Playonline viewer, I got an error message saying 'wine: Unhandled page fault on write access...starting debugger ... and then nothing happens. Now when I try to run the .exe file again i get an error message from X11 saying it cannot replace the old files.

Is there more information I need to give to get some help?

I look forward to a reply.

Massive Slowdown Since 1.5.7

No one else getting this?

In short, launching PlayOnline Viewer is slow. It takes about 30 seconds to become usable. After selecting the account, and selecting the next option to get to the password entry screen, there is another hick-up. It's as if every time it loads something like that, it's really slow. I even went to the game and same thing happens there.

Now, it's not just the application going slow, it actually makes X use 100% of my CPU (or rather, one core of the 6. Around 17% if dividing the usage by number of CPUs. This results into the whole KDE being very unresponsive, stuttering.

Any time it's done with 'loading', everything works just fine.

I haven't debugged this yet at all, save for checking if there's anything obvious in the terminal without any debug-channels enabled. There isn't.

Is it just me? :S

Dearly need your help

okay so here's my problem, i installed FFXI, wine 1.5.4, amd drivers and whatnot. POL runs fine but when POL boots FFXI wine crashes. I tried to put the dxdiagn in the system folder, but there was one already there. I checked the overrides, there was one already there. I've tried running it in a desktop, to no avail. I've tried changing cd to FFXImain.dll directory, to no avail. I've tried pretty much everything i could read anywhere.

I'm running ubuntu:

Crash with macro palette switching:

While I was confirming the self-resolution of 30339 tonight I found a new crash: Scrolling through my macro palette sets by holding a shoulder button plus the D-pad (or Ctrl/Alt+arrow keys) causes FFXI to crash when reaching a specific set.

Details as I get them. Should be able to easily obtain log info, but I need other people to attempt to reproduce this on their systems and get back to me. Can anyone check?

2nd APR Update

As of the 2nd of April update, the issues highlighted below no longer affect me.

I would crash once every 10 minutes due to a variety of effects - Raging Rush would crash me 100% of the time.

Since the update, I've not crashed at all and experienced a Raging Rush which also didn't crash me.

It seems whatever the problem was, it was a problem SE was aware of and fixed, as I can't see details about fixing such a bug in the patch notes.

Having the exact same issue as Chiitoo - Crashes mostly when an animation is triggered, sometimes an animation won't cause a crash but certain ones will 100% of the time.

The game is now unplayable because of this bug :/

Random Crashing as of the March 27 Version Update

Has anyone else been experiencing this? Excluding very rare occasions where the game client would crash for me, it has been doing so rather frequently ever since this update (I might have noticed it on the test-server earlier already, where I would actually crash every time I cast a certain spell, but after about 5 times of that happening, it just stopped).

If I had to guess, I would say it is related to the changes they made to alleviate issues resulting the Xbox version of the game to lock up.

I figured I would post here before digging in deeper into it and/or posting a bug-report. I do find it a bit too big of a coincidence to be just me, as it started happening immediately after the update, and was possibly happening on the test-server already.

If I have had two clients running at the time, both may have crashed at the exact same time, or only one of them while the other kept running fine for a time, until it crashed as well.

I have been running the game with no real issues for well over a year (except for the very rare occasions mentioned above) on a 64bit Gentoo Linux, Wine versions spanning from 1.2.3 (or earlier) to 1.5.0 with KDE3/KDE4, and this is the first time every I have encountered such frequent unhandled exceptions.

Most often it happens during battle (again speaking for the changes made for the Xbox issues to be the cause methinks), but I had it crash a few times in just the title screen, too, after selecting a character and perhaps before that as well.

There is also a ton of the following before the crash, though I think this was happening before already, and it may be going on for ages without a crash:

Black PoL Screen

I've been trying to get PoL to work for the past hour on my old laptop after installing Ubuntu 11.10 and nothing seems to be working, I have sound (music and all) but the screen is black. I didn't have this problem in 10.04 nor on my newer laptop that's also running 11.10. Running the PoL launcher in terminal gives me this long error code;

I'd imagine it's something to do with directx but, again, I didn't especially install directx on my newer laptop and it works fine over there. I'm at wits end...

Mouse buttons not working properly

So I have a mouse with an internal memory. I set up the buttons on another computer and put them as ctrl and alt. I properly installed the game and it works great except when I use the mouse buttons, the keyboard will over ride the button press and instead of recognizing ctrl+1 the game thinks I pressed ctrl then released then pressed 1.

I'm asking if any of you guys have seen this problem before.

FFXI Ultimate Collection: Abyssea Edition Install

I know the HowTo deals with installing FFXI from a DVD but I'm having problems installing this from an .exe downloaded from the Square Enix Store. Basically the installer runs, and I'm able to continue in the installer, then select the components to install (POL, FFXI and all 4 expansions). However, when I click Next, the Installer skips to the Install Completion window. Note that this does not actually install the games. Is there anyway around this or a winetricks package that I'm missing? Tried the mfc42 package with no luck.

I am also getting the same error as the comment below. Whenever I select the character it just hangs without going any further. I am running this on Ubuntu 11.10. Any ideas?

So i have been enjoying ffxi on linux for the last little bit on a second partition so i went out and bought a new hard drive same brand same type just a little smaller 320 seagate 7200 rpm on it. loaded ubuntu linux and followed all my notes to get ffxi to work and it looks like it is gonna work as normal but it hangs after the char. selection page any ideas, maybe i forgot do to something anyhelp would be appreciated. this is to be a full time linux laptop

FFXI was working great for me, but the July 2011 update seems to have broken it. The tools no longer open, and it goes to a black screen once a character is selected.

Anyone having any luck after the July 2011 update on OSX?

I'm getting a huge amount of "fixme:d3d:resource_check_usage Unhandled usage flags 0x8." messages right before it hangs at the black screen.

FFXI + Wine + PS3 controller

Hello,

I am trying to get FFXI + Wine + PS3 Controller to work on OSX. I have had some success, but I am stuck at about 99% working.

Here's what I did so far:

1. Download and install PS3 Controller from here: tattiebogle.net/index.php/ProjectRoot/Ps3Controller

2. Downloaded GamePad Tester from here: download.cnet.com/Joystick-and-Gamepad-Tester/3000-18490_4-48273.html

3. Verified with GamePad Tester that all buttons/joysticks were responding.

4. Attempted to setup GamePad with polcfg.exe. It failed because it does not seem to recognize when I am pressing "Button 1" - even though I can see it happening with GamePad Tester. To fix this I modified the registry settings under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/PlayOnlneUS/SquareEnix/PlayOnlineView/Settings/Controller. In my case I set (in dec):

AnchorDown: 6
AnchorLeft: 7
AnchorRight: 5
AnchorUp: 4
Menu: 15
Navi: 12
Ok: 14

.. I stopped here because I got it to behave about well enough for what I wanted..

5. Attempted to setup gamepad with FFXiPadConfig.exe, it failed with the same symptoms as polcfg. To fix that I set HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/PlayOnlneUS/SquareEnix/FinalFantasyXI as follows:

padmode000: 1,0,0,0
(NOTE: Enable gamepad, disable slider, disable hat switches, disable force feedback
padsin000: 10,8,2,9,1,13,15,14,12,0,-1,-1,3,33,33,32,32,37,37,34,34,4,6,7,5,-1,-1

Before I started testing this looked like this: 4,6,11,7,10,2,0,1,3,8,-1,-1,9,33,33,32,32,37,37,34,34,41,41,40,40,5,-1

The main thing I was trying to fix was that the 4 buttons on the left of the joystick were not able to navigate menus or target things within the game. Changing positions 22 = 4, 25 = 6, 26 = 6, and 27 = 7 seemed to solve that.

However, I still seem to be having a problem. Even though I can see with GamePad Tester that the X button is "Button 15" (14 w/r to the registry number, as it starts counting from 0) and the O button is "Button 14" (13), it still will not work.

The mouse works for the confirm function, so I don't know if somehow its poling that instead of the gamepad or what is going on.

I hope this information is helpful.

Any ideas on this last glitch?

Bright & Blurry Menu Buttons

Recorded FFXI Linux gameplay (via Wine) with glc-capture program.
System Specs: Socket A Athlon XP 2600+ (single core 2133Mhz), 512mb x2 DIMM DRAMM, Geforce FX 5500 256mb, 80GB ATA Western Digital Hard Drive
OS: Archlinux (Kernel ver: 2.6.36-ARCH), WINE 1.3.9

I have used two different video cards (Geforce 3 Ti 200, Geforce FX 5500) and still get the same blurry bright menu buttons. POL in itself is very sharp, but once I switch over to the blue FFXI screen, my entire desktop turns a couple of shades brighter and the menu buttons display as too bright and blurry.

Anyone know where the fault may lie? Thanks.

Direct3D and a blank FFXI Config

Looking for some assistance. Here's what I've done. Using Wine (Ver. 1.1.44) I have successfully downloaded and installed all updates for Playonline and Final Fantasy XI. Now when I go to "Play" on the FFXI title screen, it loads up, closes it's window, and then hits me with this error message. "Terminated as error occurred in Final Fantasy XI. Failed to initialize Direct3D. Please check that this computer has the required specifications to run Final Fantasy XI." I successfully followed all the steps that this site provides in the HOWTO section except for changing the resolution using FFXI Config.exe. It opens but it is blank with no tabs and only Default Help and OK resting at the bottom of the window. I've checked all over the place online but I feel I am stumped. I am not a tech person per se, but I thought I'd just list off some of my specs to better assist anyone who may be able to help.

Specifics:
Wine is running on Vista
Macbook Specs:
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.4GHz
Chipset Model: NVIDIA GeForce 9400M
VRAM (Total): 256 MB
Resolution: 1200 x 800
Pixel Depth: 32-Bit Color

Honestly, if there is something else I could put up to help, let me know. I getting really frustrated after switching to Wine from a Hardware Partitioning of my Macbook and both times get to the last step of being able to finally make a character and something blocks my way. Any help would be appreciated.

ATI Graphics Cards & FF XI

For the past few months, I've been reading very mixed reports of the newest proprietary drivers (Catalyst/FGLRX) released by ATI. Some reports were very promising, with people saying they reached a level comparable to nVidia's proprietary drivers. Some reports still still report that there is still a wide gap, especially when it comes to gaming under Wine.

So, has anyone had any success playing FFXI on Linux with the recent versions of the ATI Catalyst drivers?

On my old computer that has an nVidia card, I was able to get FFXI performance under Wine to equal (or in some cases beat) the performance I got under Windows.

My new computer has an ATI card in it, and I left Windows on it for awhile since I was using other programs for school that needed Windows. So, before I go through the hours long process of installing and updating FFXI again on my computer (running Linux now), I was curious to know what experiences others have had with the newest drivers.

So I finally got this working, except for Wings of the Goddess. Durring my last set of problems, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling everything, but when I did Wings of the Goddess never dissapeared from my list of things I could uninstall, and it never really looked like it went through the process of taking it out.

Now when I login it tells me that not all the expansions are installed, so I tried to install Wings of the Goddess again, but every time it gets to the "copying files" phase and Wine gives me an error and forces it to close.

I should probably mention again that I'm using the 2007 collection, so Wings of the Goddess is a separate expansion disc. I have a feeling that there is just some misunderstanding where the computer thinks its not there so it won't let me use it, but the files are there so it won't let me install. Any ideas?

Play Online won't even start

Upon attempting to run PlayOnline, I get an error message:

"The program pol.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

This can be caused by a problem in the program or a deficiency in Wine..." then some stuff about websites to check, like this one.

I can install PlayOnline as well as Final Fantasy and all expansions, but just can't run it. I can run the Pol and FFXI config tools from the Wine menus, and can run polsetup.exe from the dvd, which is essentially what you get when you autorun the disk. It gives the options to install everything. When I click the display system information option, it gives me the following data:

After FFXI starts I can't switch to another window without it crashing. Doesn't happen in pol just in FFXI. Any ideas? Tried disabling compiz. I'm using fglrx if that matters. Gentoo + Wine 1.2-rc2

1.2rc2, Lucid 64 bit, Core 2 Duo, GeForce 9800m GTS

I tried installing/running FFXI in the above configuration but I couldn't get past the FFXI install.

I used the original PC CDs (FFXI 3 install disks into one folder and all the other expansion disks on their own folders).

Before, with Ubuntu Jaunty and version .96, the game would work fine in the same computer, but now with 1.2rc2, the game doesn't install right.
PlayOnline install finishes fine, and I can launch it, but FFXI install hangs at about 26% and gives me an MSI error.

I tried the newest deb package I could find at the archive for the 64 bit architecture (wine.budgetdedicated.com/archive/ubuntu/jaunty/wine_1.1.38~winehq0~ubuntu~9.04-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb), and the install would complete, but when trying to start the game from POL I'd get a "Page not found" error from POL.

I noticed that 1.2rc1 has been tested Gold on Lucid 64 bit, but using apt-get, it automatically downloads 1.2rc2, there's no deb package for 1.2rc1 that I can find for Lucid 64, and I'm pretty much an idiot at trying to build 1.2rc1 from source, but after I did, it was the same install error as 1.2rc1.

Has anybody been able to install FFXI from scratch on Lucid 64 bit?

Any pointers?

Acer Aspire One issues

Gave this a shot again after previous attempts failed. The computer is an Acer Aspire One, the OS is Ubuntu 10.04, and the Wine is 1.1.32. POL Vista runs perfectly, no issues even during installation and updates. The actual game has major problems however. The Terms of Conditions shows up with all the text as solid blocks. Upon clicking accept and getting to the character select screen (where no characters are visible), the screen changes to the character loading status bar screen. The status bar fills up and the screen darkens, about to start up the character and begin play, but it never does. It is left hanging with a black screen, "Vanadiel Marches" music playing without hang ups. Anyone know what's up? The computer can play FFXI when running XP so it can't be the card...

Pol's windows are not rendered.

I tried playing FFXI on Ubuntu 10.04 AMD64 with the current nVidia drivers (the card is a 8800GTX 768MB) and all I get is a black screen in the window. Setting pol to go full screen with wine having a 800x600 window has the same result.
I tried FFXI on Ubuntu 10.04 x86 on another machine that uses the open source drivers for ATI (the card is a FireGL V3200 on a lenovo Thinkpad T43p) and pol displays fine.
Removing the proprietary nVidia driver on the AMD64 machine and using the open source driver makes pol crash without error when it is in windowed mode, but displays properly in full screen with wine having a 800x600 window.
I had no problems with pol in windowed mode using the proprietary 195 nvidia drivers with Ubuntu 9.10 and 9.04 in the past.

i just switched from 1.1.42 to 1.1.43 and noticed a huge performance boost. i had a really low framerate when running around in sky, jeuno or whitegate but this is all gone with 1.1.43!

now i just have to test if the installation works too with this version...

I have noticed that in 1.1.41, when installing, the name of the program "Play Online Viewer & Tetra Master" shows up as "&P" or other garbage. I believe this may be a clue as to why it will not install.
I have tried several methods to get it working in 1.1.41 but have found no solution. Admittedly i am having problems with my new hardware, i can not get FFXI running even with old WINE versions. Though they do install with older versions.

Black Screen on Pol login

I am running arch linux fully up to date. Using Wine-1.1.42. I did a fresh install of steam since i bought ffxi using steam. It is set up properly and everything works fine in it. But when i launch Pol it comes up black with music running. I have tried it in vista mode like suggested along with moving the proper dxdiagn.dll over from a working windows computer. I had this working on a previous arch install not but 2 months ago and am now beating my head against the wall. Any help be appreciated.

FFXI Temporarily Freezes > Xorg 1.7.5 or NVIDIA ?

FFXI freezes alot on Fedora 12, sometimes for a few seconds sometimes for good. Its hard to say if its Xorg, Nvidia Driver or WINE. The game worked perfect before on older versions of each. Other games are not affected by this problem at all.

All Pol related features like account creation, deletion, content ID's & 3d Verification is broken. About the only thing I've seen pol do effectively is launch the game and play it, lol.

Other then that it works, I've had 1 crash in the last week while at tele-dem.

POL bug in 1.1.36 and 1.1.37

when i upgraded from 1.1.35 to 1.1.36 i noticed that the pol window is shown in a little square in the upper left corner and this seems to be the same in 1.1.37 too. i was able to solve that problem by resizing the window to it's maximal size (not by setting to full screen in pol conf because that will kill wine).

is anyone else having that problem too?

Just a note for those with the 2007 collection: It works too. Make sure your operating system is set to Windows XP through winecfg, and go into the PlayOnline directory on the DVD, and right click setup.exe and go to run with and type wine(or navigate here through the terminal and type "wine setup.exe") do the same for the INST1 INST2 INST3 etc. directories. Happy Adventuring!

As of December 8th, it's not woking

I had this game working flawlessly before (besides the lighting and shadowing issue where it flickers a bit... but that was so minor i hardly complained about it). After installing updates from ubuntu that day, for whatever reason the game has stopped working. I can log into playonline, and i get all the way over to the play button. I click it, then i click play at the "hey, don't let this game run your life" message. then playonline gets ready to run the game and close. Just after playonline disappears and the game gets ready to boot up and render (I don't even see the screen turn black to get ready to render anything) it crashes and gives me a generic error message with no further details. I've tried playing with multiple settings to no avail. Any ideas? Thanks.

Working with WINE for Mac

Got this installed with the alpha build linked via WineHQ's suggestion for Snow Leopard. It works to 95% of what I expect. A few things I've noticed:

POL Config will not recognize the Mac's screen resolution properly, and defaults it to 640x480. Registry tweaks will fix this issue.

The thing that is keeping me from being 100% satisfied is that whenever I tab away from the program (specifically FFXI), it crashes. I've tried switching to windowed mode, which does indeed put the program in a movable window, but still crashes on change. I'm able to screencapture and do other processes in the background fine, I just can't target or highlight them, or it crashes. When it crashes, the sound continues but the rest of the program is frozen.

Closing the program causes it to freeze/crash, yadda yadda. The Mac alpha release has a really nifty way of just closing the program via the icon at the top, which makes it nice and easy when it does crash.

Any hints or suggestions to the whole "crashing on tabbing"? If I can find a way to get a log, it will be posted.

running on Acer Aspire One with Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Under wine 1.1.32, I installed POL and FFXI from the VC2005 disk, set the library for POL to dxdiagn (native, builtin), set the resolution for FFXI equal to screen. I have two bugs that prevent gameplay: POL crashes as soon as it launches unless it is in fullscreen mode, and FFXI graphics and text are foobar. Any ideas/advice?

I had to update my payment info since I switched banks and no longer had the card that was on file. As some of you may know, Square has a new policy of only using cards that they can verify through additional layers of security (which for me means Verified by Visa).

As part of the payment info update process, the POL Viewer will try to launch a web browser so you can complete their new process for verifying your credit card. This does not work under Linux.

I don't know if POL Viewer is trying to launch Internet Explorer, or if it's trying to launch whatever the Windows user has defined as their default browser.

Luckily for me, I have friends who play FFXI and thus was able to log in as a guest player on their machine and update my info that way.

Just wanted to pass this info along, as it will most likely affect everyone who needs to change their payment info.

Would anyone be interested in a Linux Linkshell?

I haven't played FFXI in a while as I've been busy with work and school, and I've also been playing with different distros on my computer too.

This weekend I plan on getting back into FFXI and I was sort of thinking about seeing if there was any interest in a Linux Linkshell. I envision it as a regular linkshell where we just talk about whatever, help each other on quests/missions, as well as discussing Linux and getting FFXI to run on Linux.

The major problem, of course, is the fact that FFXI has many worlds, and I doubt all of us are somehow magically playing in the same world. This means that for some, creating a new character on a new server would be a requirement.

Still, I wanted to see if the idea would appeal to anyone, and perhaps get an idea of the servers (worlds) we play on. My character is on the Phoenix server.

Are you using 64bit wine or 32bit wine? I found on Fedora that if I used the 64bit wine in the repos i couldnt even install POL, I had to build the 32bit wine on fedora. But ive ran FFXI on 64bit Arch and Fedora on 32bit wine and it works better than 32bit Ubuntu 9.04

Hello,

I have been thinking of posting here but I have not done it until now.
Me and my wife are both playing FFXI fulltime on both of ours Debian systems.

It have gone a few months (one year to be exact) now from when we moved over to linux for FFXI.
We both plays with gamepads and in fake window mode (wines desktop emulation)

The biggest "problem" that we have with FFXI on our system is the shadow rendering from caves etc. (flickering + hard edges on the shadow "sprite")

So let me list our systems and (hopefully all) our configurations.

Debian unstable + testing
(got links to both type of repositories in my source.list file)
wine 1.1.13
(with IME fix + a personally fix for the rumblepack on the gamepad. I changed the code so it wouldn't try to guess the rumble-type and instead use one specific)

My and my wifes systems:
AMD Athlon 64 6000+ 2GHz
2Gb memory
NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT 1024 Mb memory

Yes, we got almost the same systems (except for harddrive types and motherboard type and other extra hardwares)

Cannot create account

Since the introduction of the 3D-Secure system, I cannot create a PlayOnline account with Linux. The "Payer Authentication" button does not open a browser for me when I click on it. This means I cannot authenticate my credit card and create my account. Anyone know of a way around this?

freezing

I haven't seen any posts about freezing too recently, though i have been noticing it more and more. It seems to occur at very specific conditions: upon targeting specific targets, at a specific distance, and sometimes facing a certain general directional range.
I am looking for more information before submitting a bug report. Please let me know if you are also experiencing this problem.
Please also include which version of WINE you first began to experience this in. I /think/ that it was around version 1.1.21 when i started experiencing this bug, but i know that some were reporting it earlier.

NVIDIA Video Cards

Anyone having issues with NVIDIA cards to the point that Final Fantasy XI is absolutely unplayable? Thus far there seems to be a good number of NVIDIA cards that give an enjoyable in-game experience with minor issues of shadows not working correctly but these do not appear to hinder in-game performance; rather, they just look funny and are mildly annoying to the eye. And, if too unbearable they are almost eliminated if completely disabling shadows. Not a real fix, but one that is available for any that deem this necessary.

Will be checking on current bug status/existence and filing new where needed.

No doubt part of the reason Final Fantasy XI is less prone to issues on NVIDIA cards as FFXI and NVIDIA partnered up during production and thus NVIDIA has ensured that any 'special' methods of rending Final Fanatasy XI were supported by NVIDIA cards. When Final Fantasy XI entered the drawing board they pushed some new ground and did not always follow the standard rendering practices of the day and some of which are still not followed today. But, the Final Fantasy franchise has always done their best to push new limits and explore new frontiers and have long reaped countless awards and recognition for their pioneering efforts!

As for Wine's ability to pass this information along to the video driver is one thing, and yet another if NVIDIA has simply not currently supported the *Nix driver fully enough to allow FFXI to run as smooth as possible. As close as NVIDIA drivers and cards come at present though, the issues are likely within Wine not currently being able to pass the right info back and forth to the video card.

Hopefully all will be resolved soon and interested to hear what others have experienced!

ATI Video Cards

Anyone running ATI video cards? If so what kind, what driver, and are you having issues with this line of card? Also, have you found any one version of Wine to perform better with this card if the latest version of Wine has messed things up?

I have tried an ATI RADEON HD 4350 1GB GDDR2 on both Wine versions 1.1.28 and 1.1.29 and YUK! Game-play is possible but get around any light and WHEW! Starburst blindness everywhere!

There is also many issues of textures failing to draw altogether and/or drawn but look more like a dayglow kaleidoscope of every colour in the rainbow.

I am working on figuring out what bug reports need filed if none exist and/or if they do exist see if there is any patch or progress of a fix available.

I have a 128MB and 256MB (older) ATI cards but both are AGP 2.0 slot cards and my one computer with AGP 2.0 recently passed on and the other AGP board I have is AGP 1.0 and thus incompatible to run the AGP 2.0 cards.../sigh

Interested in hearing your success or lack of success with ATI cards!

At the moment anyway, if you are having issues with your ATI card and thinking a new video card may solve your problems, look into NVIDIA as replacement( At least until someone informs of a working ATI card! ). At the moment NVIDIA has the highest success rate. No doubt due to the fact that Final Fantasy XI and NVIDIA partnered up when FFXI first launched production.

It would be super nice if "ALL" video cards ran FFXI without any hitches! Not only would this help fans of Final Fantasy XI but other games and applications would benefit!

POL either black or 'barcode' text

I've tried this on a different computer with a fresh install of Jaunty and i am getting the same issues where POL is black (but sound works) if windowed, and when run fullscreen the text is mixed up. Can someone explain how to correct this, atleast so I can read the text and get through POL and see how FFXI runs???

Installation Notes Ubuntu(Jaunty)--Wine-1.1.28

The following info is based on a clean installation of Ubuntu Jaunty(9.04) and Wine-1.1.28

The absolute fresh installation helped ensure that no other items had been installed somewhere by some program that by chance helped the installation and runtime of Final Fantasy XI( FFXI ), thus potentially giving false results to the installation and runtime testimonial.

I have performed this task several times thus far with plans to perform further testing using the various hardware I have laying about.

The system hardware I have thus far tested on is my Intel 3.0GHz Hyperthreaded mainboard with 3GB and then later 4GB of system memory. I have also performed once using one of the 256MB graphics card(the 5200 witch I will spec out shortly), upon my Intel 3.0GHz single-core with 2GB of system memory.

Setting things up; I installed Ubuntu Jaunty(9.04) from my installation media and wiped out any/all prior partitions and installations. Upon initial boot-up I installed the proprietary NVIDIA drivers for my graphics card(s).

--NOTE: The NVIDIA testing has been performed using the following cards:
NVIDIA GeForce FX5200 DDR 256MB PCI (dual vga and single s-vid out )
NVIDIA GeForce 6200 DDR2 256MB PCI ( vga, hdmi, and s-vid out )
NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS DDR2 512MB PCI ( vga, hdmi, and s-vid out )
NVIDIA GeForce 9400 GT DDR2 1GB PCI-E ( vga, hdmi, and s-vid out )

--NOTE: The following stable-release NVIDIA drivers have been tested with these cards:

Once the 3D drivers were installed and the system rebooted fine without any hiccups, I downloaded the source for the latest( at time of this post ) version of Wine, version 1.1.28

While Wine was downloading I fired up the Terminal and grabbed the dependencies needed for building/running Wine.

Once Wine was downloaded and the dependencies were satisfied I extracted the Wine archive and navigated the Terminal focus to the newly extracted Wine source directory. In my case I extracted the downloaded archive to my desktop. In the terminal:

Once inside I ran:

./configure

Followed by:

make depend && make

Finally:

sudo make install

Once installation I ran post-installation check(again from the terminal).

wine --version

Getting an output of "wine-1.1.28" satisfied me so I ran the configuration utility.

winecfg

In the resulting configuration utility window I switched the default mode from XP to Vista. Then from the drives tab, performed a auto search of devices. Finally, I selected the audio tab and let Wine figure out my audio( Alsa ), performed a test sound and upon hearing a test sound, I hit the apply tab at the bottom of Wine's configuration utility and exited the utility.

Once Configured I inserted my Final Fantasy XI VANA'DIEL Collection 2008 DVD installation media. Waited for the DVD drive to appear on my desktop and opened the drive file viewer. Once open, I selected the Autorun.exe file and double-clicked.

When The Final Fantasy installer window popped I hit the Install PlayOnline Viewer and TetraMaster button. I left everything default except adding desktop shortcuts. I chose to not add them as in part I hate clutter on my desktop and they do not work anyway without additional post installation tweaking. Of which it is far easier and quicker to right click the startup launch icon once FFXI is installed and add a shortcut to the desktop or launch panel. --Note this is not a FFXI installation failure, this is just something I believe Wine/Ubuntu does not support accurately yet as I have never found this to work.

Once PlayOnline is installed I proceeded to install FFXI and all the subsequent expansions on the installation DVD Autorun Menu. --No need for DirectX 8 installation as Wine has this covered. Once all expansions were complete I exited the installer DVD and navigated to the start-up links now created within the Applications tab of my navigation bar: 'Applications/Wine/....'

Before starting FFXI, It is wise to run the FFXI configuration utility and set the runtime resolution to match your desktop resolution settings. On my Acer X203H LCD I run a 1600x900 resolution. Within FFXI's configuration utility I set the resolution to match my screen -at- 1600x900

NOTE: I have also tested this with an older HP1502 14" LCD running -at- 1024x780 and various( even older ) analogue CRT displays ranging in size from 14" up to 19" with screen resolutions from 1024x780 up to 1200x1024. Each time setting the FFXI resolutions to match my outputs display resolution.

Now, configurations tested ranged from the default settings given within the configuration utility(best for the smaller 256MB graphics cards I tested with), up to the maximum quality settings(best for the 1GB graphics card I tested with).

Once configuration is set(especially the runtime resolution set to match your display resolution), I proceeded to start FFXI from the start-up menu listing.

Upon first run, the PlayOnline viewer( POL ), will need updated, I updated; POL restarted and I submitted my login credentials(I have also tested creating a new account from this prompt with no issues). Once login credentials are supplied, I entered the game; before playing there are updates and depending on your internet connection speed and time of day you perform this task will depend on how long this takes. The shortest update I encountered was less than 45 minutes, and the longest was a little over 3 hours so be prepared to do a lot of waiting.

Once updated, I selected my character(even created/deleted a character), and ran about testing everything I could possibly think of in game. The only performance issues I encountered were related to the video and system hardware I used. No configurations were made to NVIDIA's configuration utility to enhance graphic output--all tests were performed with default settings in place.

Otherwise, the only issues I encountered were the in-game navigation options dialog buttons were unreadable if I ran the game in windowed mode upon the CRT monitors. I do not consider this a bug as this issue is quite common running FFXI on Window's(R) while in windowed mode. Something I have experienced myself and found that countless others have also encountered this issue running Window's(R) according to various Web postings I have found online when I first encountered this issue.

That should do it for this posting. Remember, "SET WINE TO VISTA MODE" and everything should(as I have found in my testing), work out of the box with zero pre or post tweaking aside from the normal use of the FFXI configuration utility that is required to do on a standard Window's(R) installation of FFXI.

Final Fantasy XI rates a Platinum from my findings.

Additionally, I plan to post some results using ATI graphics cards in the near future, and additional system hardware of the core-duo and core-quad variety(not to mention AMD chipsets of the same). --I just purchased an ATI RADEON HD 4350 GDDR2 1GB PCI-E card and plan on finding time to perform a test for this graphics card. I will post my findings once the results are in.

Title screen blacked out, varous other issues.

Running a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.4 with 1.1.28 (updated from 1.0.1 to see if it would fix these issues, didn't) with a 7800 geforce and the recommended proprietary driver that was recomended in "Hardware drivers"

I installed via the 9 disks from the original installation disks though the expansions.

I copied the dxdiagn.dll from my xp and set it up in wineconfig.

I've also, to save some time, after the install, renamed the folder and copied over an updated install that I had from windows.

After getting problems with POL viewer, where I can only see the menu only if it is in a certain location of the desktop or full screened (with or without the wine virtual desktop, but without causes it to mess up the display resolution)

the game checked all the files, and I was able to get into final fantasy. However, once I get to the actual Title screen (Where it shows places like gustaburg) I have a solid black window(or screen if in fullscreen). The terminal window is flooded with:

fixme:imm:ImeSetCompositionString PROBLEM: This only sets the wine level string
fixme:imm:ImmGetOpenStatus (0x134f48): semi-stub


I did get to the tile screen once with the windowed mode turned on, however it was off centre and the frame rate would have made the game unplayable. The terminal displayed the same thing as in fullscreen. It promptly crashed on exit.

lock up on target selection

i believe i may have discovered the problem with lock ups caused by triggering an event (the same event allways causing a lock up). i recently reinstalled ffxi and did not use the same proceedure as normal (still installing rise of the zilart 10 minutes before dynamis entrance time can make you do funny things) which resulted in several failed attempts to log in that were later fixed (dll overrides and the like). after installing in this way, i found that i was able to encounter these mysterious lock ups that others had discribed (lower jeuno npc selection, for me it was zelecting anything in an area of south sandoria (s) from a certain distance at a certain angle) i am going to attempt to reinstall again using the method i used to and see if this fixes it and post the results.
hope this can help those suffering from this basically just try reinstalling without trying to start pol until all settings are correct

Black POL

My POL was only displaying a black screen and I could hear sound but I got it working now and wanted to put up my information for anyone else who was stuck at the same point.

I am running ubuntu 9.04, have an nvidia gtx 285 and installed the 185.18.14 driver. I used the Vana'Diel 2008 collection disc and copied dxdiagn.dll from my dual boot vista mount. In winecfg I set pol.exe to use the vista windows version and under the graphics tab I had to check emulate a virtual desktop and set the size to 640x480 then i ran polcfg.exe under wine and unchecked enable sound and enable windowed mode.

After doing all that I finally got it to work and hope this can help others.

Hey Mike, thanks for the reply. That sorted it out. However now I'm having a new issue where POL gets funky graphics when I try to enter my account password, and freezes up the entire computer when I try to connect. The music still plays though...

I turned off compiz like was suggested in earlier threads. I also copied over the POL files from my existing Windows version (up to date), so there's no upside down problems, just freezing up.

Any advice?

My question is there a specific location to install the files? I installed POL under /usr/lib/ffxi and it installed completely, but when I went to install FFXI, it started automatically looking for a generic C:/Program Files... type of location for POL, and when it could not find it, said "can't find POL, install that first" and quit installation.

What's the fix for this? I'm sure it's simple, as this is my first attempt at using Wine. For reference my Wine is 1.1.26 and my OS is Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex. Thank you for any responses.

No Character models

Ok guys i am so close.. i was able to fix a lot of problems, including a black playonline viewer, wine hanging after launching ffxi, and a black screen after selecting my character.
However after some tweaks that i got from these comments, i am able to log into my character and play the game... except that i don't see any other character models at all. no NPCs, no players, no mobs. just a big open world. Also i can't autotarget any of the objects such as doors and home crystals. I am so close! does anybody have any ideas on how to fix this problem?

Terminal, Regedit, find FFXI installation (HKEY_LOC_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > PlayOnlineUS > SquareEnix > FinarFantasyXI)
Registry keys in FinalFantasyXI folder 0001 and 0002 are your foreground res, 0003 and 0004 are background res, change the background res to match your foreground that you wish to use and your black voids at the bottom of the screen should disappear.

Hey! im running wine 1.1.24 and got this to work on first shot without fbo tweak... I have ubuntu 9.04 set to 1280 x 1024 resolution, and I have FFXI set to 1280x800 for its resolution.. if i maximize it I have black voids on the screen, how do I fix this?

Wine 1.1.25

Not a big deal but after an upgrade from 1.24 to 1.25 I saw some graphics glitches in some of the spells casted like utsusemi, paralyze, and sometimes with warp. A line streaks out near the end of the spell.
Anyone else getting this?

I have not seen that issue, it looks like you may have a unique situation. I am not sure just what may cause it, but i would look into mapping ctrl 6 or alt 6 to some other program/feature and see if it activates. that should let you know if it is unique to FFXI on your computer or if there is a keymap problem or a keyboard problem.

Idea about why FFXI works on later versions of Wine for some and not others

As you may have read in my other posts, I can get FFXI working flawlessly under Wine 1.1.18. Any version after 1.1.18 I have the following problems:
1. If the install (and the POL/FFXI update) was all handled in Wine 1.1.18 and I try to upgrade to any newer version of Wine, I cannot exit the game. If I /shutdown or /logout and click on "Back" I just get a black screen. Often times I'll get a message from wine saying that pol.exe caused an error.

2. If I try to do the update for PlayOnline Viewer in a version of Wine after 1.1.18, after the update is complete, when the viewer tries to restart itself, I get an error stating that it could not replace "polhook.dll" If I then restart PlayOnline Viewer myself, it seems to work, and FFXI updates the way it should, but when I exit the game I get the same error above with the black screen and the occasional message from Wine about pol.exe causing an error.

Now, I know that this doesn't happen to everyone. As evidenced by the tests that are posted and the some of the comments left for this application, the game seems to work fine for a few people with the latest versions of Wine. Why I (and I'm sure others) can't get it to work above 1.1.18 is beyond me (it's not from a lack of trying, that's for sure).

I do have an idea though. I know that many of you install FFXI from the Vana'Diel Collection 2008 DVD-ROM. I install from the 2007 DVD-ROM and Wings of the Goddess from the stand alone expansion DVD-ROM. Perhaps, there was a change made to the way Installshield installs the game on the 2008 Vana'Diel Collection. It could be something small like a change in how it writes the install info to the registry. But, perhaps that's the problem. Do you think this is an avenue worth exploring (I have a friend with the 2008 collection, I could try to install from his DVD-ROM as opposed to spending $20 just to test a theory).

Macro problem

Anyone have a similar problem ?

I'm using wine 1.1.24 but it was the same under 1.1.21.

How I got FFXI to work again on my computer

For those of you who are having trouble getting FFXI to work at all, you may want to try what I did. Here are the steps I performed (and why I performed them):

1. Starting with a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.04, I installed the latest STABLE version of Wine (1.0.1). I used Wineconfig to set it to Windows Vista, since I knew I would to do that eventually. Also, the reason why I chose to start with 1.0.1 is that on some of the newer versions of Wine, I was having problems with InstallShield not installing the program properly. It would start off OK then I would get a dialogue box that said the installation failed. I know from previous experiences that installing the program with 1.0.1 should work (although gameplay will not).

2. Once Wine 1.0.1 was installed, I downloaded the Vista compatible version of the PlayOnline Viewer from the FFXI website. Since I already had Wine set to Windows Vista, it's just easier to leave it that way and use the Vista compatible version of the PlayOnline Viewer.

3. I then installed FFXI. I have the 2007 Vana'Diel collection which doesn't have Wings of the Goddess, but I have that on a seperate CD-ROM. I simply ran the SETUP.EXE files from the INST1, INST2, INST3, and INST4 directories. Then I installed Wings of the Goddess. I just put in the CD-ROM and ran SETUP.EXE (under Wine of course). When I installed Wings of the Goddess, it copied most of the files then I got a popup that said "1627: Installation Failed." I simply ran SETUP.EXE again, and it seemed to pick up where it left off before (after clicking "Next" a few times and "Yes") and installed Wings of the Goddess.

4. I then downloaded Wine 1.1.18 from the WineHQ .deb archive and installed it using GDebi (basically a graphical version of dpkg that comes standard with Ubuntu and other Debian-based distros). I chose 1.1.18 because that seems to be the latest version of Wine that allows the PlayOnline Viewer to update correctly. Most newer versions of Wine will allow the PlayOnline viewer to update, but when it restarts I'll get a message stating that polhook.dll wasn't replaced.

5. I then copied my dxdiagn.dll file from Windows Vista to Wine's System32 directory. The Windows Vista version works fine.

6. I then used Wineconfig to set up pol.exe to use the native version of dxdiagn.dll. There is no need to use regserv anymore.

7. I ran PlayOnline Viewer and as expected, it updated itself, and restarted. Everything went smoothly.

8. I entered by info for my POL account and begain the process of updating FFXI.

10. After that was completed, I exited Final Fantasy and using FFCONFIG I set the resolution to my desired setting.

11. I did the "fbo" tweak to the registry.

12. I launched PlayOnline again, and it worked. I was suprised to get choppy graphics, but I used the old trick of selecting yourself (F1) and pushing enter a few times to increase FPS, and it worked. This was odd because I ususally didn't need to do this with the fbo tweak, but, at least it worked.

I'm debating about whether or not I should upgrade to the latest version of Wine since I just got it working again. I'll probably wait until 1.1.24 and try then. It seems most of the regressions are in versions of Wine after 1.1.18. I know that it seems to very by individual as well, but 1.1.18 seems to be the last "works for just about everyone" version of Wine when it comes to FFXI.

Spinning character and connection issues

So, I'm using Wine 1.1.23 with Ubuntu 9.04 x64. FFXI runs prefect for me, and I have run into only 2 problems so far; besides the flashing shadows and shadow lag, which it seems everyone has. I just turned off shadows, and deal with the flashing shadows in zones.

Ive came across two problems though, seeing if anyone has them or knows a fix. The first is whenever I switch workspaces, when I come back to FFXI, my character will be spinning in a circle until I move the joystick on my Logitech controller. I thought at first this was just a bad config of the controller, so I re-did that, but nothing. Also, when I first log-in, my character will log in spinning until I move the joystick.

My other problem is with my connection. As long as I'm actually playing, it runs fine without any disconnects besides the usual. Yet, if I ever leave it running for bazaaring or just going AFK for a long while, it eventually disconnects. Before you say, yes I have changed to setting in the game for the auto disconnect, but that still didn't fix it. I'm not really sure what the problem is. I'm running DSL if that helps at all.

Besides that, things are going good so far on it :) Been running it under Linux for about 4 weeks now. Thank you for the help.

Crashes in Port Jeuno on WINE 1.1.22 and 1.1.23

When attempting to trade with the NPC Squintrox Dryeyes at (G-8) in Port Jeuno, WINE has recently begun to lock up and crash for me. This appears to happen close to 100% of the time when trading from the NPC's West side. (It may still occur when trading from her East side, but not 100% of the time.)
I've also found that logging back into a same or different character with the same client will cause another lockup/crash after several seconds unless the original character is moved to another area with another client.
File check attempted, turns up no errors. I'm running 1.1.23 on Gentoo AMD64. already have a full stack trace to attach to a bug--but before I file one, I'd like to ask other people to attempt to reproduce this crash on their own systems.
Could other people here check this out by trying to trade with Squintrox Dryeyes? Thanks in advance.

Quick Update

Did a clean install of Fedora, this time using the drivers from the nVidia site itself. They made no difference at all compared to the drivers I used in my previous attempt to get better framerates.

An interesting thing though; While FFXI was running, I turned on the system monitor and noticed that FFXI was causing my CPU to run at 100% at nearly any time... Guaranteed to be at 100% when I was in a more populated area. So perhaps the lag is related to this? Even if it is though... Could there be a fix to it or is my PC just too weak for this? Even so... It still runs better in Windows, so it's not like my computer is incapable of playing this game.

Instalation Issues

Even though I've sucessfully installed FFXI in the past (as my previous posts will show), I recently had to reformat my HD. I currently dual-boot Windows and Linux. I do have FFXI installed in my Windows partition, but being the nerd that I am, I would prefer to play under Linux. However, I seem to have problems with the installer itself with the recent versions of Wine. It just keeps erring out during install attempts. Wine itself isn't erring out, it's InstallShield. I just keep getting "Installation Failed" errors or I'll get an error with a long number code (I can't recall off the top of my head). Anyone else having similiar problems or any ideas on how to correct this?

I was looking through the release notes of Wine 1.1.23 and it looks like "fbo" is now the default setting. Meaning that those who are new FFXI under Wine no longer have to do that tweak to stop the playonline viewer from flipping and increase fps during normal gameplay.

Slower Framerate compared to Windows

I run a dual boot system between Fedora 10 and Windows XP, so the hardware is the same for both installations. I've been experiencing slower framerates in Linux compared to Windows, which vary depending on where I am. As one would expect, I get slower framerates in higher populated areas, and perfect framerates in places like my Mog House.

Why I bother to post this is because there's such a huge difference between Windows and Linux, and as I read on this page, many people get -better- results in Linux when compared to Windows. And so, I was hoping someone may have a solution, or at least an answer as to why this is.

My computer hardware isn't the best in the world but it manages to run FFXI perfectly with no slowdown at any point in Windows. It is:

AMD Athlon 3200+
GeForce 9500GT 512 MB
1 GB of RAM
Running Wine 1.1.22

So any ideas? Is it just my hardware? Could it be Fedora somehow (I notice most people here use Ubuntu)? Or perhaps there's something slowing down my system that I should be looking for? Any insight or answers would be appreciated.

I'm running 64 bit ubuntu intrepid, my wine right now is 1.1.18. And the error happens right at the begining of the install. My video card is part of my amd processor (i had the same setup when I was still using windows, same computer just different op system) It will start the install like a steroetypical install (not even the playonline module) and then about 15% in it will read that message.

I have the Final Fantasy Online disk set with Zilart. It contains one Play Online CD, three FFXI CDs, and one Rise of Zilart CD. I also have all the separate CDs for each expansion pack.

I wanted to get it running under the stable Wine 1.0.1 first but could only get Play Online working with the window mode unchecked in it's config program. Everything else in Play Online worked but FFXI would crash the instant it ran.

I tried to download the Vista compatible Play Online setup file from their website. The setup stops when it finishes extracting the MSI file. I tried to run the extracted file but Wine said to run the setup that extracted it. So I did msiexec /i setup.exe and got the error fixme:msi:MSI_OpenDatabaseW open failed r = 80030050 for L"C:\\windows\\temp\\msid7.tmp
Each time I ran that command I would get a different temp file error. Most threads seemed to think it was related to running Wine in root but I never have and haven't used the sudo command. I got this error in both Wine 1.0.1 and 1.1.22

Next I did a clean install of Wine 1.1.22, installed POL, ran and updated POL, ran it again, and got an error bugs.Winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17604 I then copied over dxdiagn and set it up in Wine's config for pol.exe. I left it on it's default load order which is "Native then Builtin" and I didn't register it with the regsrv32 command. I ran POL but the graphics would flip upside-down. From other posts, I found that adding the following key with the regedit command fixes this problem:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D]
"OffscreenRenderingMode"="fbo"
Now POL runs flawlessly.

Next I installed FFXI and all expansion packs.
I had problems with inserting the next disk during the install. First I'd have to insert a CD and click it to open the dolphin file manager, then I had to open the Wine config and go to the drives tab and hit ok to exit, then in console I typed wine d:\setup.exe. If I didn't do any of the previous steps before running the setup then Wine wouldn't recognize the CD. As soon as the insert disk message appeared, I'd have to make sure my dolphin window was closed, then type wine eject d: in a separate console, then insert the next disk, then I'd have to repeat the previous steps I mentioned to get the system and Wine to recognize the CD, then hit retry. If Wine didn't recognize the CD and I hit retry, then the installation would exit and I'd have to start over. After installing the game, I ran pol and started FFXI to download updates. Half a day later(about 11,700 files), I hit ok and FFXI started in full screen mode. Hitting Accept or Decline at license screen would make FFXI go to a black screen so I had to kill it. Next I changed settings in the FFXI config program to my liking, then switched pol.exe to vista mode in Wine config. After that, the game ran almost flawlessly, though my terminal output would show the following:

Flaws in playing FFXI:
Shadows looked fine but were lag intensive. When turning on Bump Mapping in FFXI's config program, the shadows lagged a lot less but they flickered when moving the camera. In some areas(like windurst woods chocobo stables), the shadows didn't flicker. Shadows for characters can be turned off but they still appear at some doorways.
The game crashes for me when selecting multiple players using the 0 key when they are at the same coordinates(like a home point or after entering an arena).
Minimizing the Wine window seems to close out of the game instantaneously unless in a virtual desktop.
I had a problem at one time in the previous Wine version with POL going out of the Wine window so the Wine window was mostly black. When I moved the Wine window, the POL window would move inside it. I fixed this buy turning off "Allow windows manager to decorate windows" in Wine config, ran pol, maximized it, then made it small again, and it was back to normal. I might have caused this problem by changing settings in KDE for my FFXI window which is actually the POL window too.

I originally had FFXI installed on my Windows XP PC. I could also get FFXI working by copying over the directory and searching the registry for related keys. I don't know what ones are needed specifically but there are quite a few and I needed more than just the main key listed in Software. I still needed the extra configuration for the direct 3D reg key, dxdiagn, and vista mode. Computer Specs: Intel Core i7 2.66, 6GB ram, EVGA GeForce GTX 260 Core 216.

Install Issue

I played this a few years ago and after much buggering a friend has talked me into playing it again. Playonline installed fine, but unluckily I have the old box set of FFXI with the independently packaged CD's rather than one DVD. The install of the game itself would not allow me to "switch" cds saying that the drive was in use.

No problem there; I didn't have Art Urghan or Wings of a Goddess expansion packs so I opted to buy the Vana'diel Collection '08 DVD instead. The problem is that even though I went through Wines uninstall process PlayOnline didn't actually remove itself. I need a way to remove PlayOnline and all associated registry keys without deleting my entire .wine folder.

Installer hangs after finishing INST1 setup

PlayOnline installs fine, and then I proceed to the next step and install INST1 and everything seems fine until the end. the progress box goes away and the screen just hangs with the background still on the screen. I have left it for a good 10 minutes or more and it will not finish. My CPU is stuck at 100% during this time.

wine 1.1.21 from wineHQ repo. Ubuntu 9.04 w/ all updates.

Issues after initial install of POL viewer

I am having a problem that I can't seem to find documented anywhere. I am running Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10, and started out with version 1.20 of WINE, but have had the same issue no matter what the version.

The Viewer will install properly, and it will update, but when it tries to restart itself it throws an error that it was unable to rename the temporary files (the new exe it downloads during the update) and then it will close. The odd thing is, is that when I look at the directory in the virtual installation, the files are in fact renamed and there are no residual .tmp files.

However, when I try to launch the program again, it is only a black screen and the same music that is played as if it still needs an update. Dragging any window across that one results in visual cascading as if it were out of memory or something. I have to force the close.

It doesn't matter which emulation I set it to or which DLL I copy and register (XP or Vista), I am getting this same behavior. I have tried uninstalling the version .20 and deleting the virtual installation, and then installing older versions of WINE, both .19 and .18, and I still am having this same issue.

Now, I am pretty new to Linux and even newer to WINE, so if there is any information I can provide that would help diagnose this issue please let me know. I'm at my wits end here and this is the last application that I need to get working on my main machine. If I cannot get it to work I won't have a choice but to go back to Windows. That would be a very sad day. As far as my hardware is concerned, it's a pretty basic box - Athlon processor @2.4, 2GB RAM, Nvidia 7200 GeForce. I have the proprietary Nvidia drivers installed, and they appear to be working fine in other games such as WoW.

I am using the Vana'Diel collection 2008 to install, the same one that seems to have been used in the testing above, so I don't know why it is not working for me. It has to be something that I am missing that is specific to my installation process. Any thoughts on how I could get this working?

Also a general question - there are a couple comments that "controller works perfectly", but no mention of WHAT controller. Probably not the forum for that question, but if anyone can point me in the direction of what controllers will work well with a linux configuration of this game I would appreciate it.

I have it with wings of the goddess too as a seperate disk. I miss my ffxi, and I would love to get back on, someone please help.

Oh, and I am running the 64 bit version of ubuntu intrepid to by the way.

Graphis Problems

I recently did a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.04 and Wine 1.1.20.
Followed all the instructions on this guide and on wineffxi.org.

Currently my POL.exe is set to windows xp because I copied dxdiagn from windows xp.

Install and updates ran fine. I chose windowed mode and changed my registry so that my background and foreground graphics were equal (960x600).

POL does give me the flipping of screen sometimes but not a big problem. But when I start the game it gives me garbled text for the disclaimer and slow and looks like this screen shot that was previously posted (appdb.winehq.org/appimage.php?iId=20487).

Am I missing a step? Manually isntall DX9? And I was reading this winetricks thing, what is it exactly? Thanks.

Controller and Window focus

Hi, I recently upgraded from ubuntu 8.10 (where none of the issuses mentioned below happened) to Kubuntu 9.10 and got everything to work just fine (my wine install sits on another partition so it wasn't touched) except when I tab into say firefox, then back into FFXI, my game controller won't respond for a second, then it freaks out until I force my character to stop moving.

Now I'm not sure if it's something in Kubuntu or Wine 1.1.20, but was wondering if anyone ran into this. Seems to be strictly a gamepad thing.Also when I quit FFXI I get POL crashing on close.. that's minor but thought I'd mention it.

Neither happened before upgrading (why oh why did I do that!)

Crash on exit, character lagging...

Everytime I try and logout of the game, it always crashes and I have to restart my computer. Has anyone else had this problem?

I also was wondering if there was away to alt+tab to switch applications while it was running, I have heard of something called a windower, does this app run on wine also?

another big annoyance is it seems every second or so I get a lag on my frames(i think). I havent tried adding that line to my user.reg file because I cant find it in the registry or c:/ drive, someone please help!!

Blank screen after choosing character

Hi, i'm getting probs with this, when i enter to choose character part the graphics look slow and after it began logging into the game, it put on blank screen and then it close, resolution 640x480 and have a PNY Geforce 6200 video card, using wine version 1.1.19, any idea what should be my prob?

No window borders/runs in fullscreen mode constantly

Another little hiccup I noticed with 1.1.19. Now FFXI runs in fullscreen mode by default, and I can't get it out. It's behaving more like it's on a native windows machine now. This wouldn't be a problem except that I have 2 displays and FFXI opens on the wrong one every time, whereas before, I could move the window the to display I wanted it on then kick it up to fullscreen. Heh. If nothing else, I'll try the windower.

Game won't exit in 1.1.19

I was wondering if anyone else had the same problem (or any ideas on how to fix this). Under 1.1.18 I had no problems running FFXI, however, after the update to 1.1.19, I can log in to the game and play normally (the important part), but I can't exit the game. If I do a /shutdown or a /logout then select "back" at the FFXI title screen, I just get a black screen (if I'm playing in fullscreen mode) or a black window if I'm playing in windowed mode.

Since the game works, I'm not too worried about it, but still, it would be nice if I didn't have to manually kill the game every time I want to quit.

Any ideas?

This is actually a reply to Cosma's post under the Getting FFXI to Run Under True Fullscreen Mode thread, however, because the info is so useful, I decided to start a new thread. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think more people will read this if it's a new thread instead of a reply, and I think the information will help a lot of people who are frustrated with getting FFXI to run under Gnu/Linux.

Cosma's suggestion of adding the line "OffscreenRenderingMode"="fbo" to the user.reg file makes a huge difference. I tried it (I didn't edit the file manually, I used regedit and inserted it that way... more detail below)

It does exactly what Cosma says, it stops the flipping of pol viewer, and it fixes the issue with the black bar at the bottom of the screen when you use two different resolution settings in FFconfig.

Not only that, but the increase in FPS is amazing, I was able to turn shadow effects ON, and still play the game with no virtually noticeable decrease in FPS.

Now, you can do what Cosma does and add the line to the User.reg file, or you can type "regedit" in the terminal/konsole (whatever you use) and under HKEY_CURRENT_USER expand SOFTWARE, then WINE. Look for a key called Direct3D and expand that. If it's not already there, create it. In Direct3D create a registry entry called "OffscreenRenderingMode" and set it's value to "fbo"

If this was part of the HOWTWO, I think this came would move up to gold status, as it really takes the gameplay up to near the native Windows level (at least on my machine it did).

I've gotten everything tweaked and working fine, but I only have one question... Is there a way to actually run FFXI in true fullscreen, or am I stuck viewing Vana'diel in a window?

I am trying, but it isn't working. I keep getting the error saying that it can't install the driver needed. GRRRRR!!!!! I really am on a ffxi withdraw too! Someone help!.

I figured that maybe since I had the 2007 disc maybe that was the problem? I saw that the thing up there is for 2008 collection. arg, maybe I am just drawing straws now!

But anyways, can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong!

Black Screen POL

I know this has probably been asked, but everything installed fine but whenever I launch the Playonline Viewer, I get a black screen or funky graphics. But the music plays fine. I am using the same card I used in Windows. I have also tried configuring Wine as best I can to know avail. Anyone else been able to work around this? Thanks!

Set the POL viewer to use Windows Vista, this has an added effect of increasing your framerate at the login screen. When in game set the clipping plane to the lowest setting, turn shadows off and set it to show the minimal amount of characters.

Don't quote me on this but I believe our newest problem (FFXI crashes/can't login) arises from IMM errors (component unknown). I think we need to try out WINE with the nabble sanity patch again and see if we get anywhere. (Hint Hint)

1.1.15 has made keyboard glitchy

Updated to 1.1.15, having had the game running fine in 1.1.14. Had to reapply the imm sanity patch to get into the game.

Once in, I had issues with the keyboard, it was just being really glitchy - macro bar already open when I log in and not going on pressing esc, numpad keys not working for movement, menu spazzing out etc.

Logging out and back in fixed some of these, but I can't type in game at all (not a problem for BST, but can't talk to LS or ask other BSTs to team up lol - also means I can't /shutdown or emote etc). So something seems to have broken with the new version.

Black Screen in POL

When I WINE POL it open normally, but there is no picture. The screen is black, but the POL music is playing like normal.

If I turn off windowed mod in polconfig, I can see it like normal.
this was in Wine 1.0.1. (Ubuntu 8.10)

I tried to install in # Wine 1.1.13 i386. and POL works. (haven't tested ffxi yet).

I'm new using WINE and a bit confused about what version of WINE I should use.

Is 1.1.13 newer then the 'Latest stable release Wine 1.0.1.'?

Very Low Frame Rate and Keyboard sometimes glitches

After some tweaking and what not.. I FINALLY got FFXI to install.. here are my System Specs:
Intel Pentium 4 2.0 Ghz Proc
2GB Ram
Nvidia Geforce 6200 OC Card (Using NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.29 Driver)

Heres my problems.. first off.. Final Fantasy is VERY slow in terms of Frame Rate.. to put it bluntly my character looks like the old school Cactuars when running.. The bottom 1/3 of my screen is a big black box. And finally I notice sometimes my controls from keyboard goof.. like im typing.. lets say in LS.. and if I type "s" it changes from /linkshell to /say.. kind of annoying. What are the optimal Settings for FFXI to work? Im doing this on a dummy rig before I port it to my Macbook. Im using Wine 1.1.14

ffxi gives black screen after selecting character

ok so I have gotten ffxi to go all the way to selecting my character but after that it just shows a black screen. I have turned off the sound in POL and ffxi config. I also have ffxi starting in windowed mode. then I have set it to 640 x 480. still does nothing to help. some1 please assist me. I'm so close to having it run. btw Im using wine 1.1.14.

FFXI not running after Update

I updated from Wine 1.1.13 to 1.1.14 and I'm no longer able to play.
Playonline Viewer is working ok. Switch to FFXI works, but after click on "Agree" on the first screen, the window turns black and stays this way (ended the test after 10 mins)

Using Ubuntu 8.10 on Centrino Duo and Nvidia Graphic card.

i installed wine 1.1.14 today and i cannot get into FFXI anymore, when i come in playonline and click on play the game freezes and thats all and i need to close wine, i tryed it 4 times or so but still freezes when i click play, so there is now a new problem that put FFXI back to garbage.
i use ati btw i dont now of nvidia users got the same problem, i tryed with compiz on and off but still the same and with compiz turned on i get somtimes a black screen in playonline

Gamepad

My gamepad worked out of the box and in the first try (after configuring the game to use it of course), i have OpenSuSE 11.1 and i installed the game under wine 1.1.12 (now have 1.1.13 without reinstall or problems).

My gamepad is a Logitech Cordless Rumblepad 2 and the only thing that didnt work is the force feedback.

And i just dont know why this game is still Silver. I have tried Gold games that looks horrible in comparisson to this one. I have been playing FFXI on wine since 2 weeks and the graphical bugs are almost none (very few instances like summoning an earth elemental and changing day and night for like 2 seconds) and the frame rate is almost the same as windows.

Only hack i did was the dll thing to make it work and thats it, the game install, do their update and was in game almost like in windows with the lag issue in the begining, but seriously is not that bad, Ctrl+t and it is gone. You can play for hours and dont see that lag again.

OK! It seems i found the solution, Changing hostname using "sudo hostname localhost" seems to work =)
You need to always change this when booting computer, heck you could even do script for FFXI which changes it when you execute it and when you end it it changes it to back if needed.

This is in ubuntu btw =)

Weird, ima getting error when pressing accept button "Error with connecting to lobby server" or something like that Error number was 3101 ive tried Square support but nothing.. Ive tried to add 127.0.0.1 localhost to hosts file but no luck..

I wonder what is this. I dint get this when i had that crappy ati card.

A few odd items and a thought

Amongst my latest test I found a few interesting items. The first was the graphics. I don't know how but FFXI looks crisper in WINE than a real windows install, not to mention faster loading. The POL viewer doesn't crash when I try to access my mail in WINE.

Again I don't know what it is, but some windows apps are running better in WINE the windows. This also applies for other apps I maintain.

ASUS M3N78-VM / NVIDIA 8200 Chipset

I can confirm that FFXI works wonderfully on an ASUS M3N78-VM. Im running 4 GB of RAM, 512 MB to the on board NVIDIA graphics chip on Ubuntu 32 bit.

Aside from some slight flickering, the games runs as fast as it does in Windows XP. Some things (such as the loading of character models) actually seems faster. In heavily populated areas, characters are shown almost immediately. The settings are exactly the same as the Windows install (I copied the game to .wine).

Also, for those of you who may have trouble getting past the install process, heres a tip. I could NOT for the life of me get past the FFXI update process. PlayOnline update went smoothly, but the game upgrade kept exiting with errors unexpectedly at various points (from 3% to 17%).

To get around this so that you can test settings, just copy the contents of C:\Program Files\PlayOnline\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XI with a recently updated version of the game over to ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/PlayOnline/SquareEnix/FINAL FANTASY XI AFTER you have installed PlayOnline and gone through initial game and expansion set ups.

I found that after doing that I was able to get on and play despite the fact that the update process kept failing. Even when I used the same settings.

i found a problem that i did not find here yet, you now for using the mouse in FFXI, you need to enable hardware cursor in FFXI config in windowed mode that works good, but in full screen mode the cursor from the mouse is always going automatic to above the screen, i cannot cancel it and when i move the mouse cursor down, hes going again, sombody nows how to stop that? oh yeah i dont want to play in windowed screen because mine screen is flikkering like hell, i heard its because of ati cards and im using ati 8.11 drivers so.

system froze

I got pol to work, am updating atm. Installing 1.1.7 made it start working exactly as described... 1.1.8 freezes all of Ubuntu when attempting to load the viewer. and 1.1.5 would up giving me a wide variety of errors that seemed to randomly duplicate.

Updating right now. seems to be fine.

Odd input related bug

I've been inputing new macros in the game, and what I noticed is when I "cancel" out of a text field, regardless of method it seems, the game slows to a crawl, like 1fps. However by hitting Ctrl L or Ctrl R to chat or re-entering any text field the game speeds right back up instantly. It actually reminds me of the login process when you first sign in to FFXI.

To recreate go in and edit a macro text field, type something in, and exit.

For me it happens every time, anyone else having this?

Resolution Issue

Okay, I've stumbled across a new issue. The resolution is stuck at 640 x 480 no matter what I do. When I got into regedit and change it (as the guide says) it does nothing to resize the window, but rather just makes it to where it all can't fit into the screen. Manually resizing the window doesn't help (the "new" area just shows whatever is in the background). Any idea what's going on?

Key issue

FFXI installed fine on my machine (nVidia 9800, 2.6 Intel Quad, 2 gigs Ram, Ubuntu 8.10). Playonline works with some sound sputters (already noted as a bug) and mirrors itself while loading (once again already noted and this one does not affect it's usability any).

When first starting FFXI I got the black screen after accepting the license agreement, but choosing "Windowed Mode" in the FFXI config fixed that.

Now; I just told you guys that in case it might help any. My problem with the game is that the - key (for bringing up the main menu) does not seem to work. Everything else on the keyboard works except for -. I have no idea how I can bring up the menu otherwise. Any ideas?

3 issues I am running into

Ok I finally go FFXI to run and stop flickering.

I installed Wine 1.1.7 on my Ubuntu 8.10 system
3ghz p4, 2gb mem, ATI x850

It runs playonline flips upside down in certin areas.


The biggest 3 issues I am running into is there is a 2 inch areas that is distorted on the bottom of the window and it is very lagy all the time. And the last issue is the menu items are so bright you have to guess what they are or look at the decription.

Any suggestions on how to fix any of these.

Running Ubuntu 8.10 Beta, with wine 1.1.6, with no patch.

I had a lot of flickering as well, but the game became playable after turning off compiz. (AKA the special effects under: System>Preferences>Appearance>Visual Effects.)

my two cents. :) I have gotten playable results on Nvidia and ATI cards, so keep it up!.

Multiple instances of FFXI

Hello everyone.

Today I added a small guide on how to run more than one instance of FFXI at the same time on the same computer.

If you are one of all the people that like to play more than one character at a time I believe you will find this most useful.

Right now there are several draw-backs with the guide and it's methods. They are, at best, crude. I will keep on improving them.

Main problem right now is that it seems there is no way around the fact that you need a separate copy of the new instance. This is because wine seems to put a virtual lock on the files of the first instance.

An optimized way to export the registry data would be to know exactly what data to export and then just process those registry paths. I will see what I can dig up. Maybe someone here knows exactly what needs to be exported.

I have this issue with my laptop (my gfx card on that is made by Intel). From what I understand, the card itself doesn't support OpenGL well enough to render the game. It's either that, or the drivers aren't written well enough for 3D graphics.

And it doesn't surprise me ATi cards are having issues because ATi's Linux drivers suck. I'd really look into getting an nVidia card if possible.

Hmm, I created them as strings I think.. but I'll go back and try DWORDS, might have tried that too though.. I don't remember. I'll try to get the pol viewer off of playonline later on too.. I'm using the old discs that were released at the US launch of the game.

Make sure that you have your POL resolution set to 640X480 per the howto above, and try experimenting with windowed vs non windowed mode (and do the associated registry tweaks for each). Also, I think it's best if you set the FFXI(not POL) resolutions with the FFXI Config tool instead of using regedit, because the BG resolutions are non-standard. That had me scratching my head for a while.

Here i compiled debian package with patch applied. Not sure if it works correctly since i havent yet tested it with FFXI (Im installing it now currently)

But hopefully it will work. Not sure about if the wine menus appears correctly on the application menu atleast i needed to tune the main menu properities a bit so the programs showed up there correctly.

Tho i think its better than nothing and you could always try if you have i368 comp. If you dont like this package you can always remove it with apt-get remove wine ;)

After backing off and trying again I got POL to boot. I did it by running winecfg and choosing to emulate a desktop. Then I ran polcfg and unchecked run in windowed mode. Then I opened regedit and edited POL's resolution to match my wine's desktop (it ran but in 100% black otherwise) which was 800x600. POL still resized to 640x480 but works. Unfortunately this wasn't as clean of a solution as my desktop, but one cannot argue with progress.

I've been working somewhat in collaboration with ganiman today. i posted my data on ffxiclopedia forums, and allakhazam. Here's a condensed version:

- POL and FFXI installations should work perfectly.
- Set POL to run in a window and edit the registry so that the window dimensions are 640x480 (C:\\Program\ Files\\PlayOnline\\SquareEnix\\PlayOnlineViewer\\polcfg.exe, HKLM\\Software\\PlayOnline[US|EU]\\SquareEnix\\PlayOnlineViewer\\Settings)
- when launching POL before or after the update, you may need to register a copy of dxdiagn.dll from a windows xp install and set dlloverride to native
- after the ffxi update, it will most likely fail to launch, what you need to do is open the FFXI config utility and set ffxi to windowed mode, then go to the FFXI section of the registry and edit 0001 and 0003 to your desired ffxi window width, and 0002 and 0004 to height. (C:\\Program\ Files\\PlayOnline\\SquareEnix\\FINAL\ FANTASY\ XI\\Tools[US|EU]\\FINAL\ FANTASY\ XI\ Config.exe, HKLM\\Software\\PlayOnline[US|EU]\\SquareEnix\\FinalFantasyXI)
- if there's a problem connecting to lobby server, and the problem's persistent, you need to set your hostname to localhost

Background resolution

With the current version from the git repository as of today, it seems that as long as you keep the background resolution set to 512x512, it doesn't get chopped off anywhere as seen in some of the attached screenshots, or like this one: www.ganiman.com/ffxi/ffxi_wine_15.png

I've tested with various different Overlay Graphics Resolution and Background Resolution combinations, and it seems 512x512 background res works all around. However, the game will look much better if the background res is higher than the overlay res - so when using an overlay of 1024x768 things start getting really blocky.

Other than the background/overlay limitations, the game seems fully playable. I haven't engaged in any battle, but I have seen various animations around whitegate that look normal and I have zoned around a bit with no problems.

I can log into POL, and POL works fine (aside from the occasional mirror flip), but when I try to log into FFXI I get a blank screen. See the video here:
