Getting Monaco working through Steam (using Winetricks)

Getting Monaco working through Steam using Winetricks is actually very simple, assuming you're starting from scratch. These instructions are known to work with recent versions of Wine (at least 1.4+) and should provide full functionality.

  1. Run
    winetricks steam
  2. Once the Steam install has completed, launch Steam, log in and install Monaco.
  3. Run
    winetricks --force prefix=steam vcrun2010 xact xact_jun2010
  4. Run and play Monaco!

Note that if the audio does not work due to the sound engine failing to initialise, it is highly likely that Monaco will crash after each level.

You may even be able to run

PREFIX=$HOME/.local/share/wineprefixes/steam winecfg
and remove the override for the Steam overlay - this will allow smoother multiplayer access, and works fine as of Wine 1.4.

I got the game to run properly (even through steam) after installing the following components via winetricks:

xact
xact_jun2010
vcrun2010

I was having various xaudio related issues before installing all of these components:

- game would crash after completing a level
- "XAudio2 engine" popup when starting the game
