What works
Everything.
What does not
Major crash issue since the last pokerstars update (around the 24th of january 2011) :
If you move a window to another virtual desktop, it most of the time freezes all pokerstars windows and you have to kill the software then restart it...
They work just right and smooth, everything from razz, omaha and h.o.r.s.e. to nl sngs, tourneys and cashgames. There are no crashes from nowhere that will cause you to loose money, as regular player i mark this perfectly stable for real money play.
Admin Note: Wine does not guarantee the stability of your application IN ANY WAY. Use at your own risk.
HOWTO
Installing the PokerStars Client:
Install Wine (have FontForge installed before building Wine from source)
Download the PokerStars client. Install using the
command 'wine PokerStarsInstall.exe'
Installing the Microsoft Arial (if needed) and Tahoma fonts:
Download the Arial fonts. Install using the command 'wine arial32.exe'
Download the Tahoma fonts. Install using the command 'wine tahoma32.exe'
You can resize and then redraw the table using the F5 key by adding the following into the ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/PokerStars/user.ini file under [Options]: f5redrawtable=1 (won't work properly if window is resized beyond min/max size)
FONTS
It has been reported several times that the lobby/table fonts for the
table list/player names/chip amounts don't render well or don't show up
at all. I would try the following first to correct the font problem:
The Wine package for your distro might not have
been built using FontForge. Try installing FontForge and then build
Wine from source.
Install the Arial (if needed) and Tahoma fonts {See HOWTO above}
No longer needed: Change
resolution to 96 dpi. If you have an nVidia card and use the drivers
from their site, add the following to the driver section in xorg.conf: Option "UseEdidDpi" "False" and Option "DPI" "96 x 96"
If
the problem still persists, please submit a detailed bug report with
the version of Wine you're using, the extra fonts you have installed,
your distro/version, if you built Wine from source or installed by
package (or if you tried both), and any other information that might
help the Wine developers fix the problem.
WINDOW MANAGER
Running the PokerStars Client without allowing the window manager to
control the windows makes Manually resizing table windows work correctly. However, the cursor in the chat box still tabs and mouseover player information still doesn't work. You will have to sacrifice desktop integration though if you
choose to run PokerStars this way. Run 'winecfg'/Graphics tab and
uncheck 'Allow the window manager to control the windows' to set.
WARNING: I recommend not using other programs while playing PokerStars this way.
PokerStars Is Working Again (09-20-06)
Sorry for not getting right back with everyone. However, I am happy to
say that PokerStars is working again. The E-Mail I received explains
what caused the problem first reported on 9-19-06. Since its late for me, I will just post part
of it here:
'We have traced this problem to a feature on the server side, which
has been temporarily deactivated pending further testing. You should be
able to play on PokerStars under your virtual machine again at this
time.
Thank you for your patience with this matter, and for your report
of the problem. Good luck in your games, and thank you for playing on
PokerStars.'
Nice to know that they are looking out for the Linux poker players
too. I have deleted the replies suggesting a
temporary fix to Wine as this was not the cause of this problem (I
would hate for someone to apply a patch that they don't need). Thanks
to everyone that reported here and also E-Mailed PokerStars support. It
helped them track down the problem quickly it seems :D
*This problem resurfaced again briefly on 11-16-06. Users E-Mailed PokerStars support and the problem was quickly fixed.

Configuration necessary IMPORTANT!
by Daniel Santos on Sunday March 10th 2013, 13:32
The pokerstars works 100% but the only thing you can't do is deposits.
Because pokerstars needs a browser (in Multibank deposits at least) to give you the data to complete the transaction.
Fortunatly all that you need is on this page:
www.webupd8.org/2010/03/how-to-make-wine-open-links-in-your.html
This should be included in the original text (not in commentary).
NOW your PokerStars is 100% funcional !
you may needs xact_jun2010 file to solve some freeze problem, which may take up to 90 seconds to unfreeze, something to do with directx audio with alsa.

Table(window) focus - Cascade Tables
by Eirik T. on Saturday August 27th 2011, 17:11
I followed suggestions mentioned here, like unchecking «Allow the window manager to decorate the windows», using metacity as window manager, etc. (Ubuntu 11.04)
This didn't solve the Cascade Tables problem; tables were per se cascaded OK, but if I looked at «Table1» , and then «Table2» wanted attention, only a slight blink appeared, and focus was still on «Table1».
My somehow obvious workaround is to check «Enable a virtual desktop» beneath the same checkbox mentioned first in this comment. My current screen is 1280x800, I then choose a virtual desktop of 1280x720 to avoid a complete fullscreen virtual desktop on top. This makes Cascade Tables work with focus.
Latest Italian version
by vtoejy on Monday July 18th 2011, 8:36
The latest Italian version doesn't work anymore with Wine 1.1.25. I know it is a bit outdated but it worked fine util the latest big client/server update which introduced the cash game for Italian players.
The client now sits forever waiting to connect. Updates works fine.
Anyone can verify if it works on a more recent Wine release ?
Crash + No log files...
by hehe2 on Friday April 15th 2011, 8:16
Hi,
I'm a long time wine + Pokerstars user.
- Got the usual known bugs (windows resizing, which works a bit better with recent wine improvements).
- Got the crash bug when you minimize / restore a window or if you switch your virtual desktop (really annoying) since around mid february 2K11.
- But I got a really amazing one which only appears on my Slackware64 laptop (it's not there on my 32bit ubuntu netbook) : I can't get the log files to be generated, except those from Freeroll MTTs !
I guess it must be related to the IA64 arch... May be I should try to configure wine as some win2k version instead of the default one (winxp) ?
I wish somebody could help me to get rid of this bug cause I need the log files to track my games and keep stats of my results about every opponents I've played against...

Install libcap2-bin first
by Adam on Sunday December 5th 2010, 23:03
For those n00bs out there like me, libcap2-bin is not installed by default. Install it with your package manager and then follow Michael's instructions.
This gets around the security stuff and is almost equivalent to running it as root. You could probably get away with a smaller set of capabilities than "all" but someone would have to know more about wine debugging than me to figure out which are the specific capabilities that keep PokerStars from making its connection.
Weirdly "Network Status" still doesn't work even though you can install other windows network debug tools like WinPcap and they are capable of ICMP (ping).
Resize works
by michael on Thursday September 9th 2010, 16:53
In my Test Data posting I said that resizing windows doesn't work, but if you read the f5redrawtable instruction above then it does work which makes playing multiple tables much nicer.
Working under Maverick
by michael on Thursday September 9th 2010, 16:46
Hi. I just thought I'd let you know that you can get it to work with kernel 2.6.35 (I'm using Ubuntu Maverick 10.10 x86_64 beta). But you have to do one of two things:
* Run as root (install with: sudo wine PokerStarsInstall.exe and after that go to /root/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/PokerStars and run sudo PokerStars.exe)
* Install an ubuntu mainline kernel. Just google "ubuntu mainline 2.6.35"
There's some security features in the new Ubuntu which are preventing network games in general from working under wine and this is the known fix.
Also, in the tutorial, a lot of that info is outdated. You don't need any winetricks, don't need to install any libraries or fonts. It works out of the box under wine 1.3.2
PS crashes
by Michael Cairns on Tuesday June 29th 2010, 16:24
My M$ harddrive was fried due to a power surge so I moved back to Ubuntu. I've played PokerStars using wine for about a year and I know it works very well in Wine. However if I attempt to filter anything in the lobby I crash. This is a severe problem for me. I do not know how to get around it. I'm going to reformat my harddrive and start from scratch.
Hopefully I missed some small detail. I'll update this later tonight or tomorrow but I felt I should mention this in case other people are having similar problems.

Tournament Lobby sometimes 'crashes'
by Tatsh on Friday August 7th 2009, 1:40
Does not happen EVERY time I use PokerStars with Wine, but sometimes while playing a tournament the tournament's lobby window is available and I can still click View Lobby of course; the window and controls appear but no images or data. I can even double-click the 'invisible' player list and get their data. I can scroll the arrows, but there is nothing there except the controls and the rest of the window is transparent.
PokerStars vs. FullTilt
by Tarah M. Wheeler on Sunday February 1st 2009, 2:02
I'd like to thank the PokerStars team for paying attention to the OSS crowd; we're the math geeks anyway ;-)
PokerStars works very well under Wine for me with Kubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex; I've only had one issue, and that's with the disappearing titlebars, same as the poster below. Rebooting fixes the problem; I have noticed that the title bar problem seems to happen when I either (a) open the popout cashier window, or (b) I've closed a tournament window I've registered for, and the tournament window pops up without a titlebar once seating begins.
I've saved a custom table layout that pops up my windows in the positioning I want anyway, so that helps if I"m in the middle of a tournament and my titlebars disappear.
Other than that, thanks again to PokerStars; I emailed Full Tilt tech support to tell them that their software was crashing my machine constantly under Wine, and I got a "Thanks for using Full tilt poker; we don't support Linux at this time" email from them.
