Description

EverQuest Classic and All Expansions

Everquest, next to Ultima Online, is one of the original MMORPG's that gave inspiration to games like Everquest 2 and World of Warcraft. Fight powerful dragons, strange creatures and even the Gods themselves in one of the games that started the MMORPG craze! Originally developed by Verant, Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) has since taken over the project. Everquest is one of, if not THE, longest running MMO to date since it first openned its doors in 1999.

Currently, Everquest has 15 expansions (in order of release): Ruins of Kunark, Scars of Velious, Shadows of Luclin, Planes of Power, Legacy of Ykesha, Lost Dungeons of Norrath, Gates of Discord, Omens of War, Dragons of Norrath, Depths of Darkhollow, Prophecy of Ro, The Serpent's Spine, The Buried Sea, Secrets of Faydwer and Seeds of Destruction.

What works

  • The installer seems to work.
  • Nothing else.

What does not

  • Anything beyond the installer.

It's been a few months since I last fooled with it, but decided to fire it off this morning since they just went F2p. Now I find that the existing install I had won't patch at all.  At startup, LaunchPad shows a black box, dumps an access exception, then hangs in a tight loop.  I *can* start it and get to the login screen with eqgame patchme, but that does no good since it doesn't patch.

I downloaded the current installer, set up a new 32-bit wine prefix, installed the app to the default location, cd'd into that directory and ran Launchpad in the new prefix with the same result (immediate black box on screen, xml crash dump in console, looping process).

Changing the system type from WinXP to Win7 had no effect other than to make the app crash even faster (without sticking a black box on the screen).

What was not tested

  • Everything beyond the installer.

Additional Comments

Tested on fully patched Ubuntu 12.04 beta with nVidia binary drivers (v295.20) and GTX 560 Ti.

FAQ

Solutions to common issues

Permissions

EQ is a constantly updating game. The user running the application needs read, write and execute to the entire directory where it is installed. Be careful when copying installations over from Windows. You might need to

chown -R username path_to_EQ_directory
and
chmod 0755 -R path_to_EQ_directory.

Patcher

The new patcher system is sensitive to file locations. If you have problems getting the patcher to run:

- move your EQ directory to a backup location
- download the free trial and install it into the default location (C:\Program Files\Sony\EverQuest)
- run the patcher and make sure it works, but don't go through the agonizingly long download
- move your EQ files to C:\Program Files\Sony\EverQuest (probably /home/user/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Sony/EverQuest)
- whenever you run EQ, you must "cd path_to_EQ" and then "wine EverQuest.exe"

You can skip the patcher by running "wine eqgame.exe patchme" but this will crash if there has been an update to critical EQ files.

Another way around the patch issue is to mount your Linux drive under a Windows machine and run the patcher from there. I did this over a network with samba.

In Game Options

You must change some options in eqclient.ini in order to run the game properly. If a setting is missing, like TextureCache, just enter it into the appropriate section. If you use the default file, VertexShaders are already TRUE, but so is TextureCache which needs to be FALSE.

- You can log into any zone you have previously zoned into and also any small zone like the guild lobby. If you log into one that you have never been in before, you get fixme:d3d:IWineD3DDeviceImpl_CreateVertexBuffer Out of memory! (TextureCache)

- If your first toon on char select is a Drakkin, the animation is broken except for the primary and secondary weapons/shield move. If you select any other character at char select, the game crashes. (TextureCache)

- Game crashes at char select. (VertexShaders)

[Defaults]

VertexShaders=TRUE
TextureCache=FALSE

Broken Animation

by Joni Larsen-Haikarainen

Problem with the character models not animating correctly. They will animate choppy a few frames and then just freeze up totally.
It has to do with the multicore nature of the AMD64. I remembered having this problem with an old native Linux game (UT) because of this as well and the solution there was to force the game to just run on the first core, so i tested it with EQ as well and it works perfectly!

To run EQ directly without the patcher on just the first core, open a terminal and cd to the install directory of EQ and type the following:

taskset -c 0 wine eqgame.exe patchme

If your running the game through the patcher is:

taskset -c 0 wine EverQuest.exe

Its the "taskset -c 0" prefix that binds the process to the first CPU/Core.

Wine Version Updates

If you update your wine version, it may be necessary to delete ~/.wine and then run winecfg to regenerate the directory. Make sure you move "~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Sony" to a backup location and then move it back so you don't have to download everything again.

Mouse Cursor Stuck

This happens only at server select. You may need to switch to windowed mode to choose a server for the first time or to change servers from the last one you picked. If you're using the same server, you can just use the tab and enter keys on the keyboard to get around. When you get to character select, this problem goes away.

Account Pages and User Agreement not shown

HTML rendering does not work correctly. Occasionally, I will see the user agreement show up and the news, but it is rare. You will have to set up a new account with a Windows box most likely and then sign into it with wine. It does not have much effect in game.

Running 2 Instances of EQ

by Joni Larsen-Haikarainen

This is for 2 or more instances of EQ on the same machine with different ini files. If you just use the same ini file, it is not necessary to do this.
If you use diffrent WINEPREFIX for the diffrent installs it should work fine.
cp -R ~/.wine ~/.wine.eq-box2
cp -R ~/.wine ~/.wine.eq-box3
cp -R ~/.wine ~/.wine.eq-box4
and so on.
and then use: WINEPREFIX="~/.wine.eq-box#" wine eqgame.exe patchme
for example
note though you will need to patch each one separatly.

An even easier method would be to buy CrossOver Games 7 (and thus supporting WINE economically) that has a graphical front-end to do this easy called bottles.

Extremely Poor Frame Rate or Driver Warning

I always get the following message on the way to the Character selection window:
You have a Direct3D HAL video card (version 175.65...)...
...you should download driver 8185...
There's a link that sends me to NVidia website (I have a NVidia FX5200 video card) but the so said driver is impossible to find...
When I try to play, ignoring the driver update, I get the problem of half of the textures are not showing at the selection window and in the game.I only see some kind of grey frame or building.

You must use proprietary drivers for wine 3D games to work. For Nvidia users, try www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html in one of your Linux browsers (like Firefox, not running through wine) and follow the install instructions on the driver download page. If you need help, see  www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=14

ATI cards
CONFIRMED: ATI cards do not work well with the modified dll. We've had a few people report issues with character faces being drawn improperly with the eyes and ears off-center or duplicated. Small graphics glitches. The people who have reported it are using ATI cards. It only happens with these cards.

HOWTO run EQ with wine

AUTHOR: Julio Fernandez

After speaking with wine devs, it seems it's not feasible/could make some other applications to stop to work, if we 'hack' wine to return 4 instead 0.

For those not willing/able to build wine from source (quite uncomfortable too, considering wine release cycle), theres another way to apply the workaround, without having to touch wine at all: File d3dx9_30.dll is part of DirectX dll's, typically you have already put a copy of it in your Linux EQ game directory, if not make a copy from your windows install partition (usually found at /system32 folder with all other DX files) on your Linux game directory and modify the copy.

To patch the file you can use any binary editor (ghex as example -be careful, the program itself is called ghex2 instead-)

patch the file d3dx9_30.dll at offsets:

4c6f9, where there is a '83' replace it for '6a'
4c6fa, where there is a 'fe' replace it for '04'
4c6fb, where there is a '02' replace it for '5e'

save it and it's done.

As a reference the offset list from 4c6f0 before the change should read:
00 00 00 f6 45 f8 50 74 0f 83 fe 02 73 56 b8 57

And the offset list from 4c6f0 after the change should read:
00 00 00 f6 45 f8 50 74 0f 6a 04 5e 73 56 b8 57

Changing d3dx9_30.dll linux EQ local copy won't affect any other application and keeps you from 'patching' wine sorce after each release you want to upgrade to.

You can get a modified version of the dll and Angeliqe's working ini file at http://www.angeliqe.com  Just click on the EQ button on the left. If you use the ini file, make sure to modify the resolution settings to match your X setup.

** NOTE** Make sure you put d3dx9_30.dll wherever you have Everquest.exe located. Usually in $WINPREFIX/drive_c/windows/Program Files/Sony/EverQuest

WARNING! Only, use this if the first method does NOT work for you. If you are running an older version of EQ with a non-official server that does not use the exact dll above, then you will have to use this method.

Add this line:
pCaps->MaxVertexBlendMatrices=0x4;
In file:
(your wine source directory)/dlls/d3d9/directx.c
At function:
IDirect3DDevice9Impl_GetDeviceCaps(LPDIRECT3DDEVICE9 iface, D3DCAPS9* pCaps)
Before returning (return hrc;), line 176 (as of 0.9.55)
Build wine as usual and happy Everquestin

the dll file doesn't have those numbers?
by jstx on Tuesday February 26th 2013, 12:28
Hi, thanks for the instructions.

Admittedly, this is the first time I've ever done hex editing, but those links to the pre-modified .dll file is dead, and the one available for download via "The Internet" does not seem to have those digits - 4c6f9, etc. I only see 4c6f0. email me at justxjs@mail.com

Everquest expansion Rain of Fear problem
by Tomas Andershem on Friday December 7th 2012, 13:43
Hi after the launch of the expansion Rain of Fear i can't get the game to work in the new expansion Rain of Fear or in the previous Veil of Alaris.

The game work greate in older expansions but as soon as i zone in to a VoA or RoF zone the game crashes about half way in loading the zone.

Funny thing is that VoA worked flawless before launch of ROF.

Last wine messages in console:
fixme:d3d:resource_check_usage Unhandled usage flags 0x10.
fixme:d3d:resource_check_usage Unhandled usage flags 0x10.
fixme:d3d:resource_check_usage Unhandled usage flags 0x10.
fixme:dbghelp:elf_search_auxv can't find symbol in module
fixme:d3d:wined3d_swapchain_set_gamma_ramp Ignoring flags 0x1.

Using wine version 1.5.17 on Fedora 17 64bit
using Nividia 570 with nvidia drivers from rpmfusion:
kmod-nvidia-3.6.8-2.fc17.x86_64-304.64-1.fc17.x86_64

Anyone have any idea or can help about the problem?

Greyed out areas
by MisterBubbles on Wednesday October 10th 2012, 10:17
Depending on the area I am in, the game either works 100% or doesn't work at all.

See, in the Planes of Knowledge it works fine: i.imgur.com/ci9fV.jpg

But then in Blightfire Moor I get: i.imgur.com/s9MGr.jpg

Any ideas on how I can fix this? I have winetricks directx9 and otherwise a clean wine prefix, have changed the Vertex Shaders.

Also on a side note, anyone know why the patcher gets a fatal error repeatedly from time to time?

Nvidia GTX660 Problems?
by e8hffff call on Monday September 3rd 2012, 18:45
I've just upgraded to a Nvidia GTX 660Ti, from a AMD Radeon HD3870 which was running Everquest pretty much flawless except I had to turn down some of the visuals and run the modified DX dll and some graphics in game weren't drawing. The problem is the Nvidia just wont launch the game from the Updater dialogue window.

I've removed the AMD DX dll fix. Here are the errors return in a cli. Duplicates removed1

No Animations
by Thom on Saturday March 17th 2012, 1:19
I recently installed Everquest on Gentoo and wine 1.4

I don't remember everything I did unfortunately but I recall having to build wine with 'gnutls' USE flag, and of course had to have gnutls package installed. Else the newest Launcher was giving me an Error page, like a 404, but specifically told me the problem was on their end!

There was a second error in the console as I was troubleshooting that problem, it may have been safe to ignore but in case it's not I also had to build samba with the winbind USE flag and ultimately I added samba to the USE flags for wine and recompiled wine again.

I know I also used 'winetricks d3d9x' on the eq prefix I created

Lastly after whatever else I did I was able to play the game and it ran great the little bit I goofed around but I had no animations - character creation was blank, in the world characters were just floating names etc. which is apparently a bug around for ages. After a lot of searching and no success I finally went into eqclient.ini and set VertexShaders=False and started the game again. I have animations!

Degraded to Garbage?
by Evil on Friday March 16th 2012, 9:13
I could not get it working at all in it's current state. I followed the Launchpad 3 instructions in an attempt to get around the patcher.

I installed IE6 and Flash without issue (though the location has changed from the instructions linked in the messages below).

My issue was that, IE 6 kept complaining that it couldn't run ActiveX controls on the page even though I adjusted all the security settings to make it totally insecure and even added the SOE site to the trusted list. I verified that all of these settings were retained and even restarted IE6 many times.

My attempt with IE8 was even worse, as it explodes after loading the page. :(

Little issue
by Barrett on Tuesday December 13th 2011, 16:07
I've gotten EQ completely installed and running. Well, it crashes on it's own but I can run it just fine using WinEQ 2.0. The only issue I'm having, some of my keys don't work or work correctly. Any ideas on this? My "I" button doesn't open my inventory, instead it moves my mouse cursor to the middle of my screen. My 9 and 3 on my numpad don't work for looking up and down either. These are the only issues I seem to be having so far. Thanks!

by Magnus on Sunday July 24th 2011, 21:36
When I try to log in to a private sever the operation times out after a few seconds. I'm not sure what's causing this, none of the posts I've read so far seem to have this problem. I know it's not a lot to work with but if anyone has a vague idea of what's going on I could really use the help.

ugh
by Robert on Sunday February 27th 2011, 10:12
Been trying to get this to work the past 2 days with no luck. The odd thing is that I CAN get the everquest trial to run, but as soon as I log in with an active account I can NOT get past the server screen; it dies as soon as I select a server.

I'm using wine1.3.14 on Ubuntu 10.04 64bit. I've tired compiling wine from src with & without the device.c fix + the hacked d3d9 dll. I can't remember which combination produced which result but the actual game just does not want to work.

I think the live version is slightly different than the trial version since logging into the different accounts leads to a ~5-10 minute patch each time I change.

My Experience
by 0e8h on Thursday February 10th 2011, 19:51
Bazaar textures and mouse movement are the problems I have.

In the Bazaar the wall textures are not drawn resulting in a blacked out zone. I can only see NPC's and Players.

Regarding the mouse, it can be sluggish and wont allow you at times to turns constantly around. It stops at random points other words, making strafing using the mouse, very difficult and game-dangerous.

I'm using ATI latest 11.01 drivers, Ubuntu Maverick, Wine 1.3.13. I have a updated client with new textures installed.

Azerty (or non-US) keyboard layout
by Renaud on Wednesday February 9th 2011, 3:12
I'm using an AZERTY keyboard. In Everquest some keys did not work at all (not emitting any symbol), like the "8" key. The easiest workaround was to install the dinput8 diver thru winetricks. But, using dinput8 hinders the use of dinput xinput2-patched (to allow good mouselook).

So here is the solution I found :
(I'm under Ubuntu 10.04)
Go to System > Preferences > Keyboard, Layout tab.
Click Add, and select the USA/USA layout. Put it in the first position in the list with the Move Up button (that's the important part : USA MUST be in first position).
Keed your own layout in the second position.
Uncheck "Separate layout for each windows"
Close the window, logout/login from X. In the taskbar, switch from USA to your own keyboard layout.

PRO : The keyboard should work in EverQuest.
CONS : (1) Each time you start Linux, you have to switch the layout in the taskbar. (2) Compiz is working under the USA layout, so you have to reassign some of your shortcuts/hotkeys.

Everquest 1 fails on server launch with a "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library" error Solution
by George on Wednesday January 26th 2011, 3:14
Hi, I know that you need a d3dx9_30.dll file, and you had the choice of either putting it in the everquest folder, or in the system32 folder. I like many other people had put it in the everquest folder.

I am not a pro at windows internals, but putting it in the eq folder produces this exact runtime error, and putting it in the ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/syswow64 folder. From my understanding they were screw with the 64 bit change, and put the 32 bit system32 files in the syswow64 file, whereas they put the ones for 64 bit files in the the system32 folder. Anyway back up the syswow64/d3dx9_30.dll file in case this change messes up other games, but this should work for you and good luck!

Mint 9 with ATI doesnt work
by Rasmus on Tuesday August 17th 2010, 13:35
I have an ATI card and i have now spend 2 weeks trying a huge amount of different setting in order to get model to show. I have tried all the recommended setting and different combos of them, I have tried with wine 1.2 and 1.3 from Mint repos and 1.3 compiled from source. I have tried with recommended setting suggested in the bug thread and in this one. And i have tried the patch from Warhammer Online which seems to be suffering from the same bug, but nothing works :(

My conclusion is that ATI is no go here. Please correct me if one of you have an ATI card and have Everquest running.

Note: I have a 3470HD running Catalyst 10.7 and my computer has an onboard Intel 3400MHD which i also have tried

How I got EQ to finally work
by Roger Rotge on Thursday July 22nd 2010, 10:53
I have put in days worth of time over the last 2 weeks trying to get the models to show up. I have one computer running the same EQ and the same operating system (mint 8) that shows the models, but my other computer was fighting me every step of the way. The key, what finally did it was this:

1)compile wine yourself with the above changes to MaxBlendVertices

2)run EQ from the terminal in the directory where eqgame.exe is located.

3)use the horrendously long string to start the thing. Mine looks like this: env WINEPREFIX="/home/caustic/.wine" wine "C:\Program Files\Sony\EverQuest\eqgame.exe" patchme (I am using my own private server, so if you are on live, yours may just end with EverQuest.exe)

4)fix the eqclient.ini file or else you will have some strange graphics (as a side note, after all this time trying to get EQ to show models for my 6yo to run around PoK or tag along with the wife and I, all she wants to do is stay in PoK and turn everyone into raptors[EqEMU GM code is #race 163]{make a hot key, trust me!}])

5) ***MOST IMPORTANT***
This was the key, the final answer, the one that did it!:
open regedit with $ wine regedit
navigate to HKey current user (not local machine if you are used to going there to find out how to turn off stuff that loads when Windows starts)
from HKCU goto software=>wine=>Direct3D (click the plus signs to get there)
I had to add in two new string values. They are:
PixelShaderMode -----add string value as----- enabled
RenderTargetLockMode --------add string value as --- redraw

What made me want to do this? I found the information after the terminal window debug information gave me some clues. Then I went to

wiki.winehq.org/UsefulRegistryKeys

Nothing else I did worked until that last part. I really hope this helps everyone.

I got it working flawlessly with the above guide but I notice 1 little weird thing:

if I press key to turn (left or right) turning full circle takes me 15 seconds, so really really slow.

now if I tab any other key just for a second, for example forward, then I can turn full circle in about 2 seconds.

I got a feeling it might be KDE4 but to be honest I don't know.

This is windowed, fullscreen, bound to 1 cpu or not bound.

by Vince on Saturday April 17th 2010, 12:04
After reading through all of these comments and a few other threads on the model issue I found a lot of people trying to use the d3dx9_30.dll fix or the wine patch who still didn't have any success.
Having been one of those people, I wanted to share my findings.

I was using an fx5200, which reports a MaxVertexBlendMatrices of 0 under normal circumstances, so I'm guessing that forcing a return value of 4 doesn't do any good when the hardware can't accommodate.
The fix in this case was to upgrade to a better video card (6200, supporting 8 vertex blend matrices).
If the above model fixes aren't working, verify that your hardware is actually capable of supporting what you're reporting.

Thanks to everyone who investigated this issue so thoroughly.

Can't update wine past 1.1.33 without crashing EverQuest SoF client
by Cubber on Tuesday March 23rd 2010, 19:13
I use wine to run the EverQuest SoF client on Gentoo Linux. I use it to play on eqemulator.org servers, so I never update the client past the retail SoF install. The client plays perfectly unless I update past wine 1.1.33. Then I constantly get a crash while trying to load into character select. I have tried disabling all of the advanced lighting and pixel shader functions with no luck.

Again 1.1.33 and before are fine
1.1.34 and beyond do not work

There is no need to hack wine in order to use the SoF client, I just needed to include the .dll file in my EQ directory, and bind the process to a single processor with taskset.

I would like to get this issue resolved so that I can update wine for my other applications. Please let me know what kind of debugging info I can provide that will assist with the process. Thanks.

Does anyone have a modified d3dx9_30.dll file? www.angeliqe.com/ seems to be down.

Thank you.

Getting disconnected when entering the Game
by zimon on Thursday December 24th 2009, 11:23
Hello,

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 (fresh install) and installed EQ with wine1.2 (the other ubuntu wine-package didn't work). I copied the modified d3dx9_30.dll and made the changes to eqclient.ini.

The game starts and I can log in. But when I try to open the character selection it says "You have been disconnected".

The wine output says:

So it looks like the same error as steve12345 has (in his post "Error").

The video card is a nvidia GForce9600M GT. Ubuntu is the 32Bit Version.

Does someone has an idea how to fix this problem?

Everything works!
by Greg on Friday October 30th 2009, 20:52
Thanks to everyone here who has tested and posted. I followed the directions, switched texturecache=false in eqclient.ini, put Angelique's d3dx9_30.dll into my EQ folder and it's working flawlessly.

I just pointed wine to everquest.exe on my WinXP drive and launched it.

Wine 1.1.32
Ubuntu 9.04
Nvidia 9600GSO graphics

Honestly, this was easier than getting WoW to run.

Ken Sharp! Have you lost it?
by Lars on Wednesday October 28th 2009, 7:56
Ken!

What the hell were you thinking? You just deleted nearly all of the gold status test reports for EQ stating "Installing is an important part of testing under Wine." as a reason.

Have you ever HAD EQ on your computer? It does not need an installation! All you need is the patcher, which is an executable downloadable from Sony and on the installation disks (for all I know) - and everyone who has ever played EQ has it somewhere. With this patcher, it will download a 100% functional Everquest installation from Sony Online Entertainments official servers!

Instead of asking, you just deleted about a dozen of gold status EQ test reports, including mine, basically making all the work we put in the test report worthless :(

Please explain yourself! I am not contributing to wine with test reports if someone goes on a deletion frenzy without any reason and nullifies my work.

Intel Graphics issues
by RyanK on Sunday October 4th 2009, 4:46
Under Ubuntu (both Jaunty and Karmic [alpha and beta]) on AMD64, I was able to get to the character select screen without any issues by using the d3dx9_30.dll file listed above. I did get the warning about the HAL driver, however, there doesn't appear to be a driver I can install for my video card (Intel Integrated Graphics).

I posted a YouTube video of a screen capture of what it looks like at www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Q9ZwDSB1aQ

This appears to be similar to what people were describing with texture issues and drawing out the models. The Framerate is very slow. I did also try using the taskset -c 0 prefix in hopes that might be the issue. I'm guessing that this is going to be broken unless a driver can be found that will work with this but I'm posting here in hopes that someone might know of a solution.

Relevant output from "lspci -v":

I installed wine via the apt-get instructions.. I will build it from source tonight and let ya know if that fixes my problem. I figured since you do not need to compile with fixed DLL anymore that it wouldn't be a problem.

issue running client
by Matthew on Wednesday July 22nd 2009, 8:49
I am running Everquest in Wine 1.1.26 on Ubuntu 9.04(64bit) running on a 64 bit laptop. I have followed the directions to be able to install and run 32 bit software. I have the game loading after several days of playing with configurations. the problem I am currently having is when I get to character select the models do not render correctly. I am going to try to revert back to luclin models and see if those work. has anyone else had this issue / and found a fix for it?

PS the laptop runs a dreaded intel graphics chipset but glxgears runs fine as well as native Linux 3d games (after much configuration changing).

addition to Lenny x64 test: alt-leftclick DOES work
by Lars on Thursday July 16th 2009, 15:36
I have to revoke my statement about

"What does not work:
[..]
- alt-leftclick to open item information window (however right click and moving mouse works)"

It was actually just that ALT is the default modifier key for my window manager (KDE), after I changed that to META, I can use the ALT key to alt-leftclick stuff for the item information window :)

Working Mostly
by Erik Seglem on Thursday July 9th 2009, 13:33
After going through and messing with all of the suggestions above, I was able to get models, zones, everything working except one thing. When you go to turn, even in a zone with no one else in it and settings down, it turns at full speed and then slows down till its barely turning, if you let off the arrow key and turn again it starts fast and slows down again. I had wanted to work with it a lot more to try and figure it out but I got frustrated with it. And then been really busy lately. If I do get a chance I will be trying to make a guide of what exactly has to be done to make it work, except that bug.

I have tried a few things, like trying to link it to just one processor and fiddle around with the settings, not sure what is goin on that messes it up.

Error
by steve12345 on Thursday June 4th 2009, 23:38
err:d3d:IWineD3DDeviceImpl_Reset Cannot change the back buffer format yet

I got to the character select screen once, but crashed when attempting to zone in. The errors listed appeared to be audio related. I ran wine configuration and selected pulseaudio in the audio tab.

Now I get the above error all the time. EQ gives a C++ pop up.

I've tried pulseaudio, alsa, and oss in wine configuration.

wine 1.1.18-1.fc10.i386
nvidia-graphics180.51
pulseaudio-0.9.14-3.fc10.x86_64
gnome-alsamixer-0.9.6-4.fc10.x86_64
2.6.27.24-170.2.68.fc10.x86_64 #1 SMP
FC10 AMD 64 bit.

Is this error related to Video or Audio?

Thanks!!

Runtime error
by Jim on Tuesday May 19th 2009, 17:33
Followed directions to "cd path_to_EQ" and then run "wine EverQuest.exe" from the command line.

Receiving a Visual C++ Runtime Library error when attempting to launch EQ.

I am using the modified version of the dll at angeliqe.com/d3dx9_30.dll and also Charity's working ini file at angeliqe.com/eqclient.ini I have modified the resolution settings to match the X setup.

I must be missing something. I will continue to read through the forums and see if I can find any ideas. However, if anyone has some pointers for a new WINE user, I would appreciate your comments.

Thanks

by dan on Tuesday May 19th 2009, 5:57
hey - very new to ubuntu, wine, and linux in general so sorry if I'm just being a noob. Just downloaded wine to try to run everquest (test server if that makes any difference) takes me to the patch screen, patches and before I hit the server select screen crashes with a serious error and has to close. Any ideas would be appreciated,

cheers,

Choppy since last patch
by John Morgan on Tuesday February 3rd 2009, 10:24
It seems that something has changed in EQ (go figure) since the last patch. After following all the instructions here I had EQ running perfectly fine on my SUSE 11.0 box. Since the last patch everything is choppy and I will crash quite often. There are times where I can run for hours and nothing, other times I crash so often it makes the game unplayable. Has anyone else run into this problem?

SuSE 11.0
NVidia card (I forget the model)
Dual Intel Centrino
4 Gigs RAM

Couple issues
by Cubber on Sunday January 4th 2009, 15:28
I just got everquest working under wine by recompiling wine with the pCaps->MaxVertexBlendMatrices=0x4; fix, and by using the modified .dll and the posted working eqclient.ini file in my eq directory. However I am having a few issues.

- I see no spell effects no matter what I set in my options. I do however see the character going through the motions and hear the sound. I also see the level up effect when my character gains a level.

- When running in full screen mode my mouse is stuck in the center of the screen. I can move it somewhat but not very far at all, and it is very jittery.

- I can use pixelshaders 1.1 with no problems, but if I try to enable 1.4 or 2.0 or any combo of them the game crashes at character select.

- If I enable advanced lighting in the advanced options I get a some what of a strobe effect in the background on character select.

I am running:
gentoo linux amd64
nvidia-drivers-177.82
wine 1.1.12

Processor and GPU:

Intel Core 2 Duo T9400 2.53G
NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GS

Any help is appreciated, particularly to get full screen and spell effects working.

Thanks!

Overlay performance
by Deadchicken on Tuesday September 30th 2008, 13:29
Thank you for the work getting EQ running with Wine, this page was invaluable to getting my last windows based app over to Linux.

In my messing trying different settings to see what performance I could get to I found one -very- interesting thing: Turning off the lag-o-meter and the UI lowers load significantly, especially for backgrounded EQ's.

I found that I could drop the background load of an EQ session around ~50% by just pressing F10 and F11, YMMV. I suspect this will improve as the Wine d3d/ddraw overlay code is worked on, but a quick way to save some load on your background bazaar traders.

Direct3D HAL driver
by Jasmin Beauregard on Tuesday August 19th 2008, 22:23
I did the dll update and the eqclient.ini update and it still doesn't work.

What am I doing wrong?

Computer configuration:
Intel Celeron 2.4ghz
1gb RAM
NVidia FX5200 video Card (128mb)
Kubuntu 8.04
Wine 1.1.2

I'm too one of those who only got this app that prevents me from booting only in Ubuntu...

Thanks for the help!

Mouse Problems with Everquest
by Pete on Friday August 15th 2008, 6:14
I have everything else running fine with Everquest now...

Except the Mouse is Targeting Low about 1/2 "

I can't remember if EQ has a Mouse calibration program built in to it and since the EQ command button is in the bottom of the screen I can't use it anyways.

If anyone knows an EQ mouse calibration command to type into text bar or some program or fix for EQ/Wine/Ubuntu so that the mouse functions on target in EQ I would appreciate it.
