HOWTO
Improving performance
  • Run 'wine regedit', browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine. If there is no key (the stuff with folder icons) called AppDefaults, then create it
  • Right-click on that key and create a new key game.exe
  • Create a new subkey Direct3D. In that key create two string variables:
    DirectDrawRenderer with value opengl
    RenderTargetLockMode with value readtex
General instructions, with or without opengl
  • Press cancel when the installer wants to update system files
  • To avoid copy protection issues (in my experience it did not work even on Windows 98SE, just 95), upgrade to the latest version
  • If you are not using the opengl mode as described above, after saving a game, the menu becomes invisible, but it appears for a second or so first, so it is easy to find the resume mission button. the menu appears again if you ALT+TAB out of the game and back
  • In order to play network games, IPX will have to be enabled in the kernel, and you need some userspace utilities, usually called ipx-utils; and IPX must be started (there should be an initscript). Also note that Tiberian Sun's network support is only available when it is run as root

No-CD
by Nick on Friday January 14th 2011, 15:17
I have followed the instructions to change the registry, updated using the given link on to the 2.03 version and have successfully patched the game. I am now able to open the game without error. At first screen it tells me that I require a CD. I checked my registry and it points at the install. However it still gives me the please insert CD message. I am currently using Wine 1.2.2 This is the free downloaded full version from the www.commandandconquer.com/classic hosted by the company that made it as a way to advertise for the new C&C 4. Thus there is no CD available though it is an entirely legal copy.

I'm seeing sluggish frame rates (even with my core i7 and nVidia graphics) here. When I try the regedit tricks above, I have great difficulty with cutscenes and the main menu.

Free download, partial success
by Dan Kegel on Sunday February 14th 2010, 12:39
The game is now a free download from
www.commandandconquer.com/classic

It seemed to start fine, but I saw no mouse,
and after a while (during which I was trying to quit)
it crashed and made my X server crash or otherwise somehow logged me out.

This was with current wine from git on karmic with a GeForce 8500 GT
and the recommended proprietary drivers (version 180) from Ubuntu.

Game.exe shows splash and then quits
by Shannon VanWagner on Sunday November 15th 2009, 20:38
Running Tiberian Sun (C&C The first Decade installation) Game.exe, the Tiberian Sun splash screen shows and then nothing happens.

The game worked once but we can't figure out how to get it to work again.

Have tried updating the game with the 2.03 patch - no joy.

Any ideas?

* Slows down when scrolling
by Chris Fork on Wednesday September 16th 2009, 11:01
Re: * Slows down when scrolling

The slow scrolling in the game is by design. The game is programmed to slow down when scrolling over populated areas, and speed up over sections of the map with nothing of interest.
