HOWTO Install & configure

In this HowTO I use Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy with wine 1.1.3.

Install the game

  1. Mount the install CD (this is distribution and configuration-dependent)
  2. Using the terminal, browse into the mounted CD directory and type "wine setup.exe" (without quotes)
  3. When Setup menu appears, select your preferred options (selecting radio station requires the second CD)
  4. When the installer asks for second CD, type in another terminal "wine eject" and mount the second CD (or image). (For me worked too without wine eject, I simply unmounted and Re mounted second image)
  5. When installation finishes you must disable the CD check by using a crack . Backup the original EXE before applying the crack.
You may also want or need the following steps to configure GTA:VC

Configuring Wine for GTA:VC

  1. Run wine configuration (or type winecfg in terminal)
  2. Add an application and select your "GTA VC exe"
  3. In graphical options enable all first 4 options (from Directx .... to Enable virtual desktop) and set Virtual desktop to 800x600.
  4. Now you can start GTA VC (be sure "Vice City Play" is mounted or inserted, My crack tries to find CD, but will accept both the original or the image).

GTA VC crashes and the screen resolution is broken
If you get this kind of crash and your resolution is set down to nonsense, execute the command "xrandr -s 0" on a Konsole window or a XTerm.

HowTo Solve the Unhandled Exception

Administrator's note: wineprefixcreate, as mentioned below, has been deprecated and is no longer needed.

If you get strange "Unhandled Exception" errors while gaming or the game doesnt even start, run wineprefixcreate.

WARNING: the following instruction will destroy all registry entries and applications you have installed in wine!

If that doesn't help, delete ~/.wine and reinstall GTA:VC from scratch. But be careful to backup ALL your data, everything in ~/.wine will be lost for sure!

(please replace ~/.wine with the correct path, if you change it via WINEPREFIX env variable!)

What to do if your keyboard doesnt work

Make sure the option "Allow the window manager to control the windows" in winecfg (tab "Graphics") is activated.

To kill off a running, but not responding, GTA (and any other programs/processes that Wine is running), run "wineserver -k". You may need to log in to a text-only terminal by hitting Ctrl+Alt+F1 (on most distributions).

Black screen
by JackBauer on Sunday September 15th 2013, 4:29
If your game hangs on the black screen, before you even get to the Main Menu, try removing the files inside of "movies" directory. In my case Wine wasn't able to play those mpg files and pressing ESC, SPACE or ENTER weren't working to skip those.

by Lyoko on Thursday September 13th 2012, 7:23
I'm using debian wheezy with the 1.4.1 or higher at the 1.4 stable channel.
I installed GTA Vice City with both of my discs, used the no-cd crack and the game does not start at all!
It just doesn't start, no error window, just disappears from the process list.

Hey guys,

I have GTA VC v1.0, Wine 1.0.1, and Ubuntu 9.04. Whenever I play GTA, the cursor moves, but I'm unable to click on the menu options or freelook in the game. I've tried alt-tabbing, deleting gta-set, but none of which seem to work. Any thoughts and solutions would be much appreciated!

Unhandled Exception
by Emilio on Thursday May 13th 2010, 16:27
I got an Unhandled Exception when I tried to install the game. I tried to delete the .wine directory and reinstalling GTA VC, as explained in the appdb, without any positive result. Then I installed DirectMusic, DirectPlay and all msxml from winetricks and the error dissapeared.

I think the solution was installing msxml but I'm not sure. Now the game complaints about needing at least DirectX8.1 but this is a different issue.

If you get an error about IsProBE.tlb
by J W on Saturday March 27th 2010, 19:34
I was getting this trying to install:

err:ole:TLB_ReadTypeLib Loading of typelib L"C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\InstallShield\\Professional\\RunTime\\IsProBE.tlb" failed with error 2
fixme:storage:StgCreateDocfile Storage share mode not implemented.

I used winecfg to set to Windows 98, and then used the winetricks script (google it) to install dcom98. Finally, the install worked.

Hope this helps.

by Tzily on Saturday February 27th 2010, 10:01
Jut if anyone cares, I needed a money trainer and they seem to run in wine (all from gamecopyworld) but they don't work. Only one worked, don't remember which one, but i had to open the executable through the trainer and then click play. You'll find it if you need it.
Money trainer because there are no money cheats for the game, and buying properties cost you a lot :)

Graphical corruption in full screen mode
by James B on Friday October 30th 2009, 15:33
If I try to run GTA VC in full screen 1280x1024 mode, I get massive graphical corruption which makes the game unplayable. If I set my desktop to another mode say 1024x768 and then set this mode in the game I get the same problem. The only way I have got it to work is to emulate a virtual desktop (1280x1024) and then set the game resolution to 1152x864 or 1024x768 etc. I also have this problem with GTA III, GTA SA and Civilization IV. I am using wine 1.1.31 but have also had this since 1.1.29. Graphics card is ATI Radeon HD 3850 using 9.10 driver downloaded from ATI website.

That unhandled exception error
by Jaye Sunsurn on Thursday September 17th 2009, 20:23
Still get this, and no matter what I do seems to fix it, it still is an issue. I tried under the wine stable edition 1.0.1 no go... I updated wine to the most recent 1.1.29, again no go. I tried different NoCD Cracks again No Go, my own original play disc yet still this same error. I have uninstalled and reinstalled. The only thing I haven't tried is deleting all of wine, uninstalling wine, reinstalling wine, installing VC as the only program. Is this the length of what I have to go to to get this running?

by rswoods on Wednesday May 20th 2009, 13:03
I experienced this bug and noticed someone else had it but the bug was closed as "invalid." If anyone else is also having this problem it may be useful for you to know that I solved it by opening winecfg, going to audio tab and changing "hardware acceleration" to "basic" and unchecking "driver emulation". Good luck.

ridiculously low performance
by Killian on Friday January 2nd 2009, 14:41
Installing the game went fine, starting the game went fine (except it can't play the mpeg movies, but I don't really care).

It's whenever I start a game things go wrong:
First I get this note which seems weird to me but is appearantly 'common' (as far as I noticed from other comments on appdb):
fixme:d3d_draw:drawPrimitive Using software emulation because not all material properties could be tracked
But then this sequence of messages starts repeating quite heavily:
fixme:d3d:CompareFunc Unrecognized WINED3DCMPFUNC value 0
fixme:d3d:StencilOp Unrecognized stencil op 0
fixme:d3d:StencilOp Unrecognized stencil op 0
fixme:d3d:StencilOp Unrecognized stencil op 0

Sound works fine and fast, fps goes at about 0.5 (if I'm lucky). It isn't only in the intro scenes, I let my computer running to the point you start playing and performance was as bad there as in the scripted scenes.

I'm using wine 1.1.13 on ubuntu intrepid and have a radeon mobility x1400 card.

Virtual Desktop not working
by Ryan Rix on Saturday September 6th 2008, 13:26
When I run gta-vc.exe with global settings in winecfg, it runs flawlessly (after mounting my play iso, which for some reason is still required even with almost every no-cd crack on the internet) but when I tell winecfg to stick it into a 640x480 (or 800x600 or anything else) virtual desktop, it almost immediately exits, with konsole spitting out

fixme:system:SystemParametersInfoW Unimplemented action: 8193 (SPI_SETFOREGROUNDLOCKTIMEOUT)
fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),0,0x32f750,0x00000000), stub!

those are the ONLY two lines output... :(

I have all four graphics options checked...

Any ideas?

GTA Vice City becomes slower after playing it for some time
by CJP on Wednesday August 27th 2008, 13:51
When I start GTA, it runs very smoothly, possibly even a bit faster than it should (vehicles etc. move too fast). But after some minutes of playing it, the game has noticably slowed down. At the end of a longer mission, it looks like less than 2 FPS. For the rest, the game runs perfectly (almost no crashes, graphics and sound OK except for the car color bug).

The bug appeared on two computers of me: one being a HP nx6110 laptop (Celeron 1.4GHz, 256MB RAM, Intel 915GM video, Xubuntu 8.04, Wine 1.0.0), the other one being a destop PC (Athlon 2.6GHz, 512MB RAM, ATI Radeon 9200 video, Ubuntu 8.04, Wine 1.0.0), so to me it doesn't seem to be a video driver issue. However, it seems to be graphics-related, because when I look down to the ground (or to another part of the scene with a low number of polygons), GTA becomes fast again (and it becomes slow again when looking back to a normal part of the scene). While the game is so slow, the CPU is very busy, so it isn't waiting for something (like when the videocard does something complicated), so I think the problem is on the CPU, and not on the GPU. I also noticed that, while playing, the RAM consumption of the process grows at approximately the same rate as the slowing-down of the game, so I guess the two are related. Part of the slow-down is probably caused by the use of swap-space, but disabling the swap partition doesn't solve the problem. On my desktop computer, Compiz is enabled by default, but disabling it doesn't make a difference.

My guess is that the process somewhere creates increasingly large data structures (e.g. by adding new elements to a list, but not removing the old ones), which would explain the growing memory consumption. If the data structure is traversed in every frame, it would also explain the decreasing frame rate. I hope this will help the wine bug-fixers out there ;-)

I tried to install this in Ubuntu 8.04 (fresh install) with WINE 1.1.0. Everything went successfully except you have to do a few changes.

1. Install normally and use "wine eject" to change the disc.
2. The game didn't run because of an unexpected error so go into the terminal and type "wineprefixcreate", then run the game normally again.
3. It works. =)

This happens with the windows manager control option activated on winecfg. Otherwise, the keyboard simply doesn't work.

Vice City crash on opening a garage
by chris m on Wednesday June 13th 2007, 11:58
I get a repeatable crash when I try to open a specific garage on my property in the game. I do not know if I stored any vehicles in that garage, but I have debug output, screen shots and if necessary the save game.

Has anyone else experienced this. And should I report this as a bug with the debug output?

Regards, Chris

Ok, some news.

If you have the DVD version you need to exchange the main.scm file in the data directory with the old one from the CD version. Then the game works with the bloodpatch without crashing in the weapon shop. Chances are that the "Dildo Dodo" mission does work too, because the weapon shop crash and "dildo dodo" mission crash throw the same exception message at the same address -> 0x0044d5cf.

the game is too dark
by ajuch on Tuesday May 8th 2007, 18:55
Hello!

Is there any solution for the (known) problem that the game is generally too dark and some locations are nearly black? I turned up the brightness in the options to the maximum, but it didn't help... Graphics card is a Intel G960 Chipset, but I had the same problem with ATI...

This app should be rated Silver at best.
by rhY on Wednesday May 2nd 2007, 8:27
With no gamepad/joystick support the game is seriously affected in terms of gameplay. THIS GAME DOES NOT WORK WITH A JOYSTICK PLUGGED IN. Therefore, it is my opinion that Platinum or even Gold is too high a rating. One of the maintainers should alter it's rating until Bug #7800 is fixed.

Unhandled exception and audio stutter
by bob on Thursday March 15th 2007, 9:48
Reply to the one above:
=======================
I got the same problem.
I fixed the exception by running: wineprefixcreate then it started correctly.

My current problem
==================
Now the problem I'm having at the moment is that the audio stutters on playing. I get flooded with:

fixme:dsound:DSOUND_MixOne problem with underrun detection (mixlen=14904 < primary_done=14908)

messages.

Setting "hardware acceleration" under the Audio tab in winecfg to "emulation" seemed to make the stutter less, but its still really bad.

If anyone can help me with this it would be greatly appreciated :)

Greets,
bob

Someone deleted my test results
by Gerry Cherry on Wednesday January 17th 2007, 10:03
I received an e-mail several days ago that my testing data for Vice City, which was more detailed than any other entry currently residing here, was deleted, with NO explanation/details.

A reference to the existence of my vice city test results, even though the message within has nothing to do with it: www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-patches/2006-June/028125.html

I would like to know, considering I spend a large amount of time when testing/submitting testing info, why my submission after being confirmed and existing here for months, was deleted without any reason?

Will my review be restored or has it vanished now forever without any reason?
