Description

Like its predecessor, The Sith Lords takes place thousands of years before any of the Star Wars movies and is focused on some of the formative struggles between the Jedi and their power-hungry counterparts, the Sith. In the first game, you eventually discovered your Jedi powers, as well as your mysterious past. This time, you play as a different character that begins the adventure as a Jedi--but your knowledge of the character's past, the character's Force powers, and even the character's lightsaber are all missing. A journey of self-discovery awaits, and as you pick up the pieces of your character's past and discover the reasons for his or her exile from the Jedi order, your path will lead you to the few Jedi who survived the catastrophic events that took place at the conclusion of the original game.

What works
everything, played through the whole game. Antialiasing works too.

What does not
FBO - turn it off if you get garbled display in the graphics options. Considering previous reports, this isn't my driver issue. videos tend to crash a lot on end, so save often, especially before travelling. Playing in windowed mode helped, so it looks like a dual display issue. Other than that, no crash whatsoever. Played with unofficial patch 1.0c.

Sound not working and unable to fix it on Ubuntu 10.04
by Turcanu Cezar on Thursday October 4th 2012, 18:39
For the past couple of hours I have been trying to get the sound to work for this game, with absolutely no luck. I cannot even finish the character creation before my sound stops.

I have tried the mss32.dll file from KotOR and it doesn't work, I have tried every mss32.dll available for download on the first three pages of the Google search. None of them work.

From what I understand, I need a v3.0.0.0 mss32.dll, but none seems to exist on the Internet anymore. The lowest I've found is 5.0 and the game crashes with it. The others, while advertised as 3.0 seem to be (judging by the numbers on the icon) in fact v6.0, and they just don't work. Even the one in the KotOR folder seems to be v6.5.

The most annoying thing about all of this is that, on the same laptop I am using now, the game worked with minimal difficulties two years ago. Other the the obvious difference in wine versions, I may have been using Karmic at the time, but I'm not sure.

Is there any chance of some help with this? For the first time in three years I'm actually considering switching back to Windows because of this. KotOR 2 is one of my favorite games and not being able to play is quite annoying.

Thank you for your patience in reading this.

No Sound
by cvidlewis on Sunday December 18th 2011, 12:48
I'm a new Wineskin user and don't have a whole lot of technical knowledge, but I seem to have gotten the game running with no problems without any special configuration, just using wine 1.3.25 as recommended. The only problem is that there is no sound whatsoever. Sound will work when the game launcher opens, but when I hit the 'Game' button, no more sound. Any suggestions or help?

Graphics
by Caleb on Wednesday May 18th 2011, 17:00
Hello, I have the game fully installed and working with a no cd crack. My problem is that the colors are only white and green and it is very slow. Also after the character generation the game crashes. I know it may be my graphics driver. I tried to download ATI Radeon 9200 and NVIDIA Gefore4 but ubuntu won't let me execute. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Hello, I am trying to run KOTOR 2 on Ubuntu 11.04. After I installed the game using play on linux I tried playing and it gave me 2 errors:

After that I tried playing and it said no disc inserted. Can anyone help?

Selectable items in GUI mouse problem.
by Z.D. on Sunday September 12th 2010, 13:36
Hello,

I've managed to get the game running. It is playable, but there is a problem. You know how you hover over things on the in-game GUI and they highlight so you can click them? The mouse doesn't think that they are were the look like they are. It's like the mouse thinks the screen is stretched bigger than it actually looks like. For Example: when choosing dialog, I can't hover over and click option 1 in order to choose it; I have to hover over option 3. Hovering over option 3, makes option 1 highlight, and if I click, it is the highlighted 1 that is selected. It goes on that way down the line, until I get to the last option, then I have to have my mouse the equivalent distance away from it. It's like the mouse thinks the options are all further down the screen than they are. Same problem with things at the top of the screen, except for it thinks those things are farther UP the screen than they actually are. Same for things to the sides. Anything in the exact center of the screen is very close to working where it should, and the problem gets more 'stretched the farther from the center you get. Just looking at the screen, everything looks normal. It just doesn't function normally. The 'Highlightable/clickable' area gets farther and farther from the actual object. As I said before, the mouse seems to think that the GUI is stretched out over a larger distance than it really is. I'm sorry for not being clearer, but I really can't explain it any better. Any ideas?

FUll screen not working
by Andrew on Monday May 31st 2010, 3:26
I am having trouble getting the full screen methods to work.

Using the script to launch a new X session brings up a blank screen. I can switch back and forth from the main desktop screen using the ctrl+alt+F* method, but I cannot kill the blank screen with the ctrl+alt+bkspc combo (I re-enabled that combo in Ubuntu). Playing around with things a bit, it seems that the blank screen happens any time the "X :3 -ac" command is used, so I doubt the rest of the script is even being parsed.

Turning off dynamic twinview also had no effect.

Any ideas?

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a 1.73 GHz Pentium M laptop with 2 GB ram and a GeForce Go 6600GT.

No CD detected
by Luke Swanson on Monday May 10th 2010, 22:16
Okay, so I have the game installed from the CD, I double-click Launcher.exe, It gives me a menu, and I click game. I wait for three seconds, and a screen pops up telling me that there is "No disc inserted." I see people writing about a no-cd crack, would that fix it, or are no-cd cracks made for something else? (I know that sounds like a really dumb question, but one of the few things I've learned about computers is to not assume anything). Assuming the no-cd is what I need, where do I go to get it? (legally, please). If the no-cd is not what I need, does anyone know what will fix this problem?

Graphic and Sound Problems
by Chrysy on Sunday March 28th 2010, 8:21
Hi,
I have strange Problems running Kotor2, and after 2 days of internet research and testing, im hopeless to find a solution alone.

I installed Kotor2 with the patches 1.0a and 1.0b and the no-cd-crack.
Now the Game Menu worked quiet fine.
After creating an Charakter, the problems began.

The Sound didn't work.
So I downloadet the .dll, wich caused an error in the console.
This resultet in an active Sound --- sometimes.
But this isn't the main Problem.

The Graphic doesn't work ingame.
All the Menus work quiet well, but when I start the Game, all the Walls are not there. Only the Doors and tabels and stuff are visible, plus the Player charakter.
Additional the whole Screen flickers. Not only slightly but strong.

img232.imageshack.us/img232/359/bildschirmfoto1o.png

Unlike in the image, the mouse-courser does work.

The output on the console is:

caveats
by William J May on Friday March 26th 2010, 4:18
Just finished the game on the light side. I just now noticed I was missing the movies. They work in a virtual desktop, but in fullscreen there's some conflict with resolution/focus handling. It's easy to follow the storyline without them, but they are nice extra touches.

Also, on Malachor V, some of the cutscene dialog raced past. It wasn't even readable at the speed it was going. I suspect a game bug. Restarting the game seemed to fix the issue.

If you toggle movies in the swkotor.ini file, there's two places for 'Disable Movies=0/1"

We should have a warning that this particular game is buggy to start with.

I've been playing a few weeks now with only one game bug @ Telos Academy where the Handmaiden asks you to drop your weapons. I removed them immediately, and got stuck in a loop that can only be solved by the KotOR Savegame Editor. Start at the Obsidian Entertainment forum FAQ.

Save often, in multiple slots, if you get stuck somewhere and can't fix the save file.

I've been playing light side, completing 90% quests, travelling: Telos -> Dantooine -> Nar Shaada -> Korriban -> Dxun(Onderon), only updated to official 1.0b patch. Cutscenes and mouse work fine.

Program error at certain parts of the game
by Garet on Wednesday July 15th 2009, 20:37
When playing KOTOR 2, I have been having some trouble during certain parts of the game. Early on, the game would stop and a program error saying program swkotor2.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. It gives me no information on what causes the error, only that it may be related to either the program itself or wine. It then proceeds to exit out of the game. This began happening first on peragus station on the computer before the turbolift when you enter the codes to activate it, but i was able to quickly enter the codes and proceed through the door. After this i was free of the error for a while, but then it began happening infrequently throughout the game, either at other computers or during the loading screens when going to another area. One of the more consistent problems was on dantooine inside the khoonda base, as whenever i attempted to leave the error would occur and end the program. I am not sure how exactly i got past it, all i know is that i changed characters to the utility droid and it allowed me through. I then was able to go through the game again with inconsistent yet infrequent occurrences of the error, up until the point where i am at now. I am on Nar Shadda as Atton and just defeated the twin sun sisters in the cantina and now i am teleported back to the ebon hawk where the rest of the party except for the main character is waiting. There a small group meeting is held and then the duros gang shows up demanding information. The game finally freezes after Bal-dur says I'll take the stupid one who tried to threaten us instead of shooting us when he had the chance. The game then freezes and the error comes up and kills the program. There is not much I can do as i load an autosave which takes me directly to the scene. I run the newest version of Wine which is 1.1.25 and run the newest Ubuntu version which i believe is 9.0.4 jaunty jackalope. Now the game i am playing I downloaded off the internet so i have no cds and i use a no-cd patch to be able to actually be able to play it, and also I updated my game to the 1.0b version. It's been giving me this error in both versions of the game! Now has anyone had this problem and solved it, whether or not it was at these exact scene or not, or know what causes it? that would help alot thanks

Missing textures
by Jirik on Friday April 3rd 2009, 11:01
Hi
I've installed kotor2 1.0b.
Installation went fine but game itself is without textures. Visible are only models. It's funny to play in grayscale :)
See this appdb.winehq.org/appimage.php?iId=23891 .

Wine version is 1.1.18~winehq0 and distro debian testing/unstable.

Situation was little better when I install unofficial patch 1.0c. But textures weren't visible.

I'm also tried install DirectX 9c but without any effect.

Does anyone resolve this?

Fails to detect OpenGL/Video card
by Michael Roesoft-Sachs on Thursday December 18th 2008, 18:20
I just installed under Ubuntu 8.10 / Wine 1.1.10 today, and the game fails to detect that I have appropriate OpenGL drivers, so I can play the game, but none of the models have textures, and a lot of the models are missing altogether. (I ran the hardware check in the KotOR II configuration tool to determine that my pseudo-Windows box did not support the video or OpenGL drivers that it required.)

At the moment, I'm not sure whether it is a Wine issue or not. I am running this on a 4-year old computer with an ATI Radeon 9200 SE that does not require any proprietary drivers. I just installed Ubuntu on this computer a few days ago, and I do not yet know if there are any issues with the video card or OpenGL.

Fix for video playback issue
by Maarten on Thursday November 27th 2008, 2:23
Like others here I've been experiencing an issue in both Kotor 1 and 2 regarding video playback. In emulated desktop mode, videos are sometimes black and can't be skipped. When the emulated desktop is turned off, something locks up the window manager (though the effect here varies depending on which window manager you use - I've only tried IceWM and the Ubuntu/Gnome window manager) and it becomes impossible to properly go back to the game or quit.

Turns out the window manager tends to interfere with the way the Kotor games call for videos. The Wine System Tray Bar that keeps popping up may have something to do with this also, but I'll leave that to the experts. Cogadh on the Team Gizka forums came with the idea of launching the game in a separate X session without a window manager (this fix actually seems to come from the World of Warcraft scene), and this works to an extend. Something still doesn't sit well with Wine (my guess is the Wine System Tray Bar), as the window focus is still lost once a video starts playing. But now it's at least possible to go back to the game and view the videos as normal. I recommend you read the full, better readable thread at: forums.team-gizka.org/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=4439
You have to scroll down a three posts before the actual issue is brought up though.

I'll now quote the solution here (I recommend you switch to the second page of that forum link I posted, since the 'code' bits make it much better to read):

------------------------
"The launch script I created to launch the game in its own X session seems to avoid that issue entirely. I you want to try it, there are a few things you need to do first to make it work:

1. Make sure your user has permission to use audio devices. For some reason on my system, I did not have those permissions at all, but that could be a quirk of Xubuntu. Not really sure if that is the case (I'm just trying Xubuntu out for the first time), but that was the source of my audio problems with the script.
2. You need to modify the Xwrapper.config file to allow anyone to launch X. Open the file with Nano:
Code:
sudo nano /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config

and change this line:
Code:
allowed_users=console

to:
Code:
allowed_users=anybody

Once you have done that, copy this text into its own file (use Nano or any other plain text editor) and save it as "KotOR2_Launcher.sh". I usually keep scripts like this in my home directory, but you can technically keep them anywhere:
Code:
#!/bin/sh
# Launches a new X session on display 3. If you don't have an Nvidia card
# take out the "nvidia-settings --load-config-only" part
X :3 -ac -terminate & nvidia-settings --load-config-only

# Go to game directory (modify as needed)
cd "$HOME/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/LucasArts/SWKotOR2/"

# Forces the system to have a break for 2 seconds, X doesn't launch instantly
sleep 2

# Launches game (modify as needed)
DISPLAY=:3 WINEDEBUG=-all wine "C:/Program Files/LucasArts/SWKotOR2/launcher.exe"

Once you have saved the file, make it executable:
Code:
chmod +x KotOR2_Launcher.sh

To use the script to launch the game, you can either run it from a terminal or create a shortcut/launcher to the script in on the desktop or menu. Either way, the command you need to run to use the script is this:
Code:
./KotOR2_Launcher.sh

If you like what the script does, you can copy and modify it to work with any other game installed with Wine by simply changing the "cd" and launch paths to match the other game."

Courtesy to Cogadh for bringing this up and to whoever originally came up with the idea for World of Warcraft.

I'd tried turning off desktop visual effects but didn't help either

"from 16 to 32" - I think your Xserver is running at 16bits color. You can edit your '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' and change from 16bits to 24bits.
(If you don't know how to do this, you should be able to figure it out by reading this webpage: www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/x-config.html)
