What works

  • Everything (Some things have yet to be implemented with the TribesNext patch, use version rc1e for now, future versions will include better linux support)
  • Online(With TribesNext Patch rc1e)
  • Offline
  • Chat

What does not

  • Sounds are glitchy on my system
Update: This seems to be a problem with PulseAudio, not Wine. See "Extra Comments" below for more info.

Additional Comments

Download TribesNext here:
http://www.tribesnext.com

Version rc1e:
http://www.tribesnext.com/files/TribesNext_rc1e.exe

This may be a problem at my end but I'm having problems getting sound to render properly sometimes.

Update: The sound problems seem to be related to a PulseAudio issue and is not particularly a problem with wine itself. It affects native linux application/games as well (Like Flightgear), and isn't a problem on all systems running 9.10 versions of Ubuntu.

If you are experiencing audio problems, specifically "popping" and "clicking" noises and a general increase in lag, a possible solution is downgrading to a version of your OS that does not use Pulseaudio.(Example: Version 9.04 of Ubuntu) Or wait for future improvements to PulseAdio.

Ratings change: Changed from Silver to Gold to reflect this finding.

Tribes 2 under WINE?

Hasn't this been ported to Linux? In fact it's almost on sale at Amazon.com. I say almost because it's out of stock, and will probably stay that way.

I've submitted Testing Data with instructions for running Tribes 2

First go to:

Dynamix\Tribes2\GameData\

Through the terminal

[cd Dynamix ]
[cd Tribes2 ]
[cd GameData ]

Commands:

wine tribes2.exe -online
wine tribes2.exe -nologin
wine tribes2.exe -online -mod nameofthemodsfolder

MAKE SURE YOU PATCH TRIBES 2 TO VERSION 25034 DIRECTELY FROM YOUR ORIGINALLY INSTALLED VERSION.

(Meaning, don't patch tribes 2 to version 22228 from 22075 and then 25034---just patch whatever version you have directly to version 25034.)
