Description
Final official patch.
Old test results
The test results you have selected are very old and may not represent the current state of Wine.
Selected Test Results (selected in 'Test Results' table below)

What works

Installation of the GotY version and the eight official add-ons work perfectly.

Gameplay, Sound and engine speed as under Windows (a trifle faster, maybe).  Hardware acceleration (sound/gfx) is flawless, environmental audio is, too.

What does not

Inventory picture of the PC is flipped topside-down.  The worn/carried inventory items, however, are "virtually" the right way up; to take off a shirt, click the pants, to take off shoes, click above the left ear (or use the inventory items directly).

minor clipping errors: doors flicker and partly or completely vanish for several frames, depending on your viewing direction and movement, clothing parts flicker.

Outside of GNOME or KDE, the Morrowind launcher shows an empty Plugin/File List and crashes silently.

What was not tested
nothing.

Additional Comments

There are only two "real" Elder Scrolls games. Arena and Morrowind. They are art, fantasy, and immersingly deep.
I played them many times over, and it seems I will do that again and again, thanks to Wine.

gstreamer problem
by G. Rodrigues on Thursday May 2nd 2013, 9:21
The problems people are reporting with Morrowind seem to be due to gstreamer. I managed to get it to work by, in addition to what else has been advised (installing dxd9 and vc sp6 -- or whatever it is called) is disabling winegstreamer dll.

Unfortunately, I have problems loading saved games... I use the mod-patches MPP, MCP and a few mods (LGNPC, GCD, etc.). Wrye Mash to the rescue. Use Repair All on the save game. No work. Clean cells. No work. Clean spawn points. Aha, we got ourselves a winner.

This is a most frustrating game to get to work.

when i start morrowind I get no problem, the loading bar runs with text above it but once it hit's the main menu the text becomes distorted and if i click on anything, (options, for example) I recieve a menu with buttons and sliders, but no text making the game completely unplayable. here is a post from the terminal:

Hello all, I'm sorry for some very basic questions that many of you might laugh at, but I am extremely loss on how to work around the bug for changing the controls of the game. I am currently using a Mac to play, and every time I try and change the controls (space bar to jump, command click to select, auto-run to something that I can actually use etc.) the game completely freezes. I looked here to see if I can find a solution, and people keep saying they just went to the registry. Where is the registry? And how do I use it to change the controls in-game? Any and all help would be appreciated!!! Thanks!

Solution
by Hedgehog on Monday February 18th 2013, 13:11
The solution is described at the bottom of this page: wiki.winehq.org/NativeDll

I made it working in this way:

1. I've got 'l3codecx.ax' from WinXP installation under VirtualBox (I have a few windows-based virtual machines which are available at Microsoft website for web-developers to test websites against IE compatibility).
2. I copied the file to {prefix}/drive_c/windows/system32/
3. Issued command 'env WINEPREFIX={prefix} wine regsvr32 l3codecx.ax

No dialog box, cant get past "what is your name"
by Jesse McMillan on Monday September 5th 2011, 19:29
Wine: 1.2.3
Morrowind 1.6.18 (w/ tribunal and bloodmoon installed)

When I start a new game it takes me to the ship, the guy says "what is your name" and the dialog box doesnt show up.

Right about that time, the terminal starts outputting this:
err:mmio:MMIO_ParseExtA No . in szFileName: "data files\\sound\\"

...I also have no sound. Any ideas?

game won't play
by juan new zeeland on Wednesday July 27th 2011, 1:24
Hello, I'm running wine bottler on OSX 10.5, as you might guess from that I am at the bleeding edge of my technical ability here. I managed to install morrowind (torrented) but tribunal and bloodmoon don't recognize that, which doesn't matter because when I hit play, or options, the game crashes and I get a generic error message. Is there a fix that doesn't involve code?

Direct rendering disabled on intel card
by F.E. on Thursday July 21st 2011, 9:56
Hi,

I am running Debian wheezy on my ThinkPad laptop. The graphics card is an Intel i965.

I am using wine 1.3.24 from
dev.carbon-project.org/debian/wine-unstable/

My problem is that Morrowind runs really slow, around 5-10 FPS, completely unplayable.

I tried setting LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH=/usr/lib32/dri but that didn't make a difference. Running it with/without desktop effects didn't work either. I even tried running the game on its own X server with xinit!

The problem is that direct rendering is not enabled. Check out the following debug output:

Don't need No-CD crack.

Unless there is some other issue i am not aware of then you don't need a No-Cd crack you can mount the CD in wine config.

Mouse pointer stuck on edges of screen.
by babo_violent on Tuesday March 29th 2011, 8:27
When I start up the game, the menu appears and the mouse pointer is in the middle of the screen. As soon as I move the mouse the pointer jumps to the edge of the screen and no matter what I do it can only go around the edges of the screen.

Anyone have a similar problem?
Love the game and would like to solve this somehow.

MWSE started working on 1.3.11 . If you apply the patches, MPP, MCP and exe optimizer it appears to work correctly.

Crashing on WIne 1.3.9
by Colin Wetherbee on Sunday December 19th 2010, 21:14
I'm trying to run the Steam version of Morrowind for the first time, and I'm having some issues. I have installed vcrun6sp6, but otherwise, this is a fresh wineprefix.

When I start the game, I get the usual intro screen with "Play", "Options", and so forth. From there, if I start in windowed mode, a black window appears and immediately crashes with a dialog box containing an error message. If I switch to the fullscreen option and hit the play button, nothing changes on the screen, but I get an unhandled exception message on the console:

err:seh:raise_exception Unhandled exception code c0000005 flags 0 addr 0x7ef7fbd1

Are there any dependencies aside from vcrun6sp6? Anything else I might be missing?

Another potential problem is that Morrowind seems to have fairly strict graphics settings. I run a dual-head 1920x1080 configuration, and that's caused problems with other games in the past. However, I'm assuming that shouldn't make a difference in windowed mode -- the window *does* appear, after all, but it crashes immediately after that.

I'm running Steam like so:

WINEPREFIX=~/local/lib/wine-20101218 ~/local/wine-git/bin/wine explorer /desktop=foo,1920x1080 start 'C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe'

If I run Steam outside of the explorer desktop, I see the same behavior for Morrowind.

Morrowind title.mp3 issue
by Christopher Jordan on Friday December 10th 2010, 21:30
I solved this by installing lib32-mpg123 in the [multilib] repository for Arch linux. Perhaps there is a similar package on other distros that would also resolve this annoying problem.

You also need to set the sound to emulation and have the registry entries and cd (or cdemu + subchannel image).

Guys, any mod that uses MWSE either from MGE or from the standalone, will not work as intended, at least here on this 64 bit computer. It appears to work, but the parts that use MWSE functions will show severe errors, eventually crashing morrowind. MGE distant land doesn't work either, so don't even try installing MGE.

Everything else, except the config keyboard menu works perfectly, and stable, if you do the ini tweaks recommended and install both the morrowind code patch and the morrowind unofficial patch. Most of your errors should be from those mods if not from the graphics driver (i use fglrx).

Looking for someone to cooperate
by Lukas Matousek on Monday August 23rd 2010, 6:35
Hello.

I was playing Morrowind on 1,6GHz Centrino with 1GB RAM and Radeon X700. I had problem with framerate (Solstheim 10-15fps outside). Well, I thought - ATi doesn't have power to run it higher (drivers had cut down power of card to ~10% - that was my opinion).

Now I have Core i5 750 (full quad), 4GB RAM, Radeon HD5570 and my problem is the same - Solstheim 10-15fps outside. This time, it's not about card power or computer power, because there is enough power to run multiple Morrowinds...

My qustion is - Is there somebody, who has ATi Radeon HD and is running Morrowind on fps limiter (or much higher than me) and is willing to help me with set up?

Gentoo Linux x64, ATi drivers (known as closed or proprietary) 10.7 (and updating). I'm running kernel (system) as I should (from Gentoo wiki), but no way to run it as I except.

Some more info:
Resolution - no matter if it's VGA or FullHD, problem is the same.
regedit - tried tips from WineHQ (like pbuffer, fbo and others)
morrowind.ini - just like regedit

Will add more if somebody questions for it.

No ingame sound in 1.2-rc7
by Andriy Tsykholyas on Saturday July 10th 2010, 4:48
Hi all!
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 x64. The wine is configured to use OSS (because using ALSA results in dead freeze on loading saved game).
After updating from rc6 to rc7 the ingame sounds are gone. The music is still playing, but there are no voices, steps, etc.
Has anyone the same problem?

Advice for (not) tweaking "Interior/Exterior Cell Buffer" values
by Mehdi Yousfi-Monod on Friday March 19th 2010, 12:28
Some Morrowind.ini tutorials advise to set the "Interior" one to 1/4rd of your RAM and 3/4th for the "Exterior" one.
If I do such a tweak (values greater than 500), I got regular crashes when switching to other desktops of my window manager.
With regular values (10 and 32), I have no crash so far, while not degrading performances.

I tried installing the game on Windows to check if it would freeze there, and it didn't. Furthermore, since this is the only area I'm having trouble with at the moment, I believe it might be a Wine error. Even reinstalling the game doesn't fix it. :/

by Michael H. on Wednesday July 29th 2009, 1:50
I managed to get the game running extremely well (mods or no mods) and have had no problems... up until this point, at least. Taking the second quest from the Fighter's Guild, I was heading south of Balmora and into the West Gnash Area when the game crashed with a Wine error:

No matter how many different ways I approached those people around the fire near the bridge, the game would crash as soon as the "Loading Area" bar appeared on the bottom of the screen. I originally thought this was an error due to a mod, but even the unmodded version of the game gets hit by it.

Oddly enough, this is the only area I've encountered so far with such an error. Every other area loads fine and works perfectly except for this one.

I'm currently running the game on Kubuntu 8.04, using Wine 1.1.26. I am also using a No CD patch, if that matters. I'm not sure what other info could help. :/

Solution for Errors and "File not found" messages
by Martin on Wednesday March 11th 2009, 21:00
Today I installed Morrowind, running Kubuntu 8.10 with KDE 4.2.0 installed. First thing was an error message when Morrowind tried to get into Fullscreen which I couldn't read because it was just black. I did the registry tuning thing with the tips listed above, same issue. Searched through the Internet and found a pretty simple solution:

Next I went into the Morrowind Directory "/home/username/.wine/drive_c/..." and started Wine, this time no error message, but when I got to the menu it told me it could not find the Main theme mp3 file. Hitting Esc got me into the game, but with no sounds at all.

Last step was tu run Morrowind (still in its directory) by entering "wine ./Morrowind.exe" and finally it worked for me.

Another Morrowind bug
by pawel on Sunday November 30th 2008, 10:50
I edit the morrowind.ini file, as it is presented on the webpage, to diminish the emulation problems. I save it and once I start the game, the programme skips the main menu and starts the game play in some random place. And to add insult to injury, the emulation is VERY unstable and tends to crash frequently. My system is OpenSUSE 11.0, Wine 1.1.9, Graphics card: Intel GMA 3100, Celeron 2,0 Ghz, 1GB of RAM memory, and some integrated sound card.
But that was My 1st problem. Now for the other one...
When I don't modify the morrowind.ini - the games starts, and everything seems to work fine. However, in some locations when the background music changes from battle to exploration theme the screen freezes. It happens more frequently in enclosed locations. I tried basically every way of dealing with this problems, mentioned on this site.
I also can't seem to find some of the options when modifying the registry keys e.g.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D]
"OffscreenRenderingMode"="fbo"
"UseGLSL"="enabled"
"VideoMemorySize"="128"

I can't find the 1st and 3rd line.

scripting function "GetSoundPlaying" broken?
by JMS on Wednesday August 13th 2008, 15:20
I have a strong hunch that the scripting function GetSoundPlaying no longer functions as it is supposed to under Windows. This affects a great many sophisticated scripts that use that function to detect whether certain events occur.

A particular example: with the user mod "Vampire Embrace 2.4" by Cortex, one of the main functions is to allow the player to do a "combat bite" on enemies. The script in question (emb_combatdisptargN, where N is 1..10) is attached to the enemy and uses GetSoundPlaying to determine if the player has hit them. However, I have put some messagebox calls in the places where it call GetSoundPlaying, and it appears that the script never detects a combat hit.

If anyone can confirm whether or not this scripting function works that would be great, as I'm really not sure about any of this. All I know is that Vampire Embrace does not work! (It used to work fairly well back in the wine-0.9.59 days, although even back then it had problems with the combat bite).

horrible flickering problem
by JMS on Friday August 1st 2008, 17:05
Another new problem that has arisen for me post wine-0.9.59, and is still a problem as of 1.1.1: some textures flicker horribly, most noticeably hair when viewed outside. Here's a pic to show what I mean, it is a composite of 2 screenshots taken with a fraction of a second of each other:

john.moonsugar.googlepages.com/flicker.png

Yes, lots of people look like their hair is blown off and they are bald!

But it's not just hairs that are affected, it's lots of things: doors, clothes, and so on. It's terribly distracting and unpleasant to the eye. I sure hope someone can help me resolve this problem. I can't really stand playing anymore!

problems after upgrade to 1.0-rc5 from 0.9.59
by JMS on Tuesday June 17th 2008, 11:34
I recently upgraded Ubuntu from Gutsy to Hardy, and Wine from 0.9.59 to 1.0-rc5, and have encountered some new problems.

First, there is now always a 1-3 second freeze when combat starts or stops, which pretty much makes combat very annoying. I thought it might have to do with the starting/stopping of Battle music, so I went into the Data Files/Music directory and moved the Battle directory out of the way, which seems to help a little but it doesn't really fully fix the problem.

I have a bunch of problems related to switching between Morrowind and other applications, like Firefox, via the windowmanager. Sometimes after switching to Firefox, for example, the current sound playing in Morrowind will get into a 1 second loop, which is really annoying to listen to. Sometimes while I'm in Firefox, Morrowind will just crash to desktop. And sometimes Morrowind will steal the mouse pointer from Firefox. None of these issues with switching to other apps happened back in Gutsy with Wine 0.9.59.

For the sound, I've switched from Alsa to OSS in winecfg as I have seen some suggest, but none of the sound settings there really seem to affect the problems I'm seeing.

I was wondering if others have experienced anything similar to these problems? Maybe there's some mis-configuration I could fix on my part?
Thanks.

Right Shift Doesn't work.
by MrDS on Friday April 18th 2008, 13:53
Has anybody ran into this problem? For some reason my Right Shift does not work in Morrowind. It works in all the other games I use through version Wine 0.9.59. It used to work in previous versions.

A crash when leaving the ship in the beginning...
by Insill on Sunday March 23rd 2008, 13:58
Hi! I installed Morrowind GOTY and the installation worked perfectly. And the game also works, except leaving the ship in the beginning, when I leave the ship, game crashes. How can I fix this thing? It ran perfectly with some users according to Wine App DB, why it doesn't work with my computer perfectly?.

Annoying fog bug
by rji on Saturday February 16th 2008, 2:02
Has anyone else experienced the "fog bug" in "Sotha Sil, Dome of Serlyn"? The interior cell is completely fogged out so that the final story quest in Tribunal becomes unplayable without skipping to the next interior cell (via: coc "sotha sil, hall of sallaemu") as you can't see to move beyond that interior cell.

This is with an nVidia 6800, _not_ the Radeons that are known to have this problem. The known workaround for this also does not work as the CS crashes when attempting to save the esp in 0.9.54.

low performance
by kontra on Monday January 28th 2008, 16:41
Hi,
I successfully managed to start Morrowind GOTY [Tribunal & bloodmoon] and with sound under Ubuntu 7.10, but the performance is way to low
I have c2d @ 2.14Ghz, 2GB ram and Intel GMA 3100 with 256 ram
glxgears = 2000fps

I think that is enough to play Morrowind even on the best resolution, but for some reason it give me 5fps in fullscreen 1024x768, with pixel shader off, and Interior & Exterior Cell set to various values

wine version - 0.9.54
kernel - 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP x86_64
compiz turned off

Crashes when I go outdoors
by Vincent Fourmond on Wednesday January 23rd 2008, 14:21
Hello,

Under wine 0.9.53 (debian version), I manage to run a nocd version. I can play the introduction up to the point I go out of the boat, and then it segfaults. If I download a random save from the internet, I also get a page fault every time I go outside:

Two things that could differ from apparently happy other users are:

* I run on a x86_64 box
* I have a NVidia card using their proprietary kernel/GLX drivers.

If anyone had some lead on this, I'd be really glad. Thanks !

GotY
by malcolm on Thursday November 1st 2007, 14:49
I've installed GotY on Kubuntu v7.10 and it runs quite well with Wine 0.9.46, i've left the Music directory where it is, and turned the volume down to one click above Off - if it's turned off completely there are usually problems.

Load and Save works flawlessly, there is a bit of lag in Seyda Neen, but there was in Windows - i use Rainforests of the Bitter Coast. :)

The doll image is a white blob.
The menus work perfectly well.
There is no Local map update, but the World map seems to look alright.
I have a large lilac-coloured square at the bottom left of the screen, now covered by the black Local map.

If you want to use Galsiah's Character Development it will probably pay to start your Character without enabling it and then Save outside the Census and Excise Office, quit the game, enable the plugin, then restart... otherwise you will probably end up inventing several new sweary-words because of mouse-lag and enduring an erratic slide-show. :D

Abot's Waterlife works as it should except for auto-gathering Slaughterfish with a spear, although starfish and other fish are auto-gathered alright. :)

I've had two complete lock-ups - but this could be due to one (or more) of the plugins i've installed.

Peace, Love, & Light

Incorrect Drive Paths
by Teresa Bowman on Thursday June 28th 2007, 7:03
Er, first posted this on the wrong version by accident, sorry! :(

I've been trying to get 'Morrowind Launcher.exe' working so that I can activate mods (*.esp files), but it acts like the *.esp files aren't there. It's completely blank, nothing *to* select, not even the base *.esm files.

Here's the strange part: I *can* run the Launcher from Nautilus, but *can't* from winefile (it just starts up Morrowind regularly on a double-click).

Running Morrowind.exe from Nautilus brings up an error:

Font 0 not found in .\Morrowind.ini
Current Path: I:\

But it starts up fine, music and all, when I double-click on Morrowind.exe from winefile.

It seems like some kind of incorrect path error that's affecting it, but I'm not sure how to fix it.

(Running with Ubuntu Feisty 64-bit & Wine 9.39)

fullscreen?
by Greg Schick on Monday May 28th 2007, 1:12
Has any one gotten this to work correctly in fullscreen?

I turned off my virtual desktop, and unchecked the box for "allow the window manager to control the windows for morrowind.exe. Then I used morrowind fps optimizer to set the screen resolution. That gave me a true full screen display.

The problem I ran into was after I hit esc to close the mp3 error box I could no longer input to the game via the keyboard. Tried with fullscreen and windowed mode in the morrowind registy settings. Same result.

I also tried changing the background keyboard option, in the morrowind.ini, to 1. No dice.

Any suggestions?

Configuration Problem
by Ben Hall on Saturday April 21st 2007, 14:48
Does anyone have Morrowind freeze when they try to change the keyboard controls from the default bindings? I've encountered the problem running version 0.9.35. The game doesn't crash, but it becomes entirely unresponsive and has to be killed

RE: Getting morrowind to run

Make sure you've renamed the Video folder and you need to press Alt+C I think it is for the "Cancel to all" option to skip the videos.

RE: Should work now
by Alex Noffftz on Saturday January 6th 2007, 13:10
I can prove this. Installing and playing works now after getting the Music directory out of way. I can also verify the other problems left.

One addition:

The automapping feature doesn't work. Seems that there is used a wrong texture in the mapping window. The "global" map works great, but the "local" map shows a completly wrong map (e.g. interior map if being outside) not being updated.

Regards,
Alex

RE: IWineD3DImpl_CheckDepthStencilMatch
by Chris on Sunday December 31st 2006, 23:38
Stable nVidia drivers 9746 are out, so you may want to give them a try. When upgrading your drivers last, did you make sure OpenGL was still working afterward? A couple times I've got a problem with my GL libs not being properly installed (curse you, Gentoo! *shakes fist*). Easilly fixed, but easilly overlooked, too. If your libs did break, you'll want to reconfigure/recompile Wine after fixing it.

What happens after those messages print out? It should eventually get on with the game after a couple moments. Not exactly sure why the game is looking for those formats, and it takes a little to get through because Wine's printing it all out (luckilly not as bad anymore).. but it should eventually move on. The CS, on the other hand, you'll want to run with WINEDEBUG=err-d3d since it'll trigger that same loop several times (and disabling the messages helps it get through faster).

Not ready yet
by Sagar Mittal on Wednesday December 13th 2006, 19:02
I had this mostly working at the beginning of August, but it wasn't ready for integration. However, I took a little time to test current GIT and it seems to crash when using DirectShow at all (without my patches). I don't have time to look into this right now (it's the middle of exams), but there is a tarball of my patches/test applications at people.clemson.edu/~sagarm/soc.tgz if you would like to mess with it. You will need libavcodec/libavformat (part of ffmpeg).

If you know anything about adding configure checks/dynamically loading libraries, by the way, I would appreciate your help.

Kudos on fixing the d3dcaps problem; I hope your fix is integrated.

TESCS
by James Clark on Saturday November 25th 2006, 21:26
Trying to get the Construction Set to work; after I copied over the missing msvcp60.dll from my original install, things look great, and I think it even loads Morrowind.esm a little faster than normal ;)

Of course, the render window... isn't. Pity, but I can understand how that would be more complicated.

The other thing I should report is that some attempts to resize the large MDI main window result in a lock-up, with endlessly repeating error messages of the form

err:d3d:IWineD3DImpl_IsGLXFBConfigCompatibleWithRenderFmt unsupported format WINED3DFMT_X4R4G4B4
...... lots, then
err:d3d:IWineD3DImpl_IsGLXFBConfigCompatibleWithRenderFmt unsupported format WINED3DFMT_A4R4G4B4
...... lots, then back to X4R4G4B4

Can someone explain what the error means? Is it really something lacking in my GL system (using nvidia 7600 && Xgl), or is this just some strange.... texture format? that wine can't display yet? (wine 0.9.25 in a 32-bit debian chroot)

Morrowind is pretty much the one last 'killer app' that I can't do without... I'd love to be able to run it and the construction set on my main machine.

RE: Just about there
by Chris on Friday August 25th 2006, 16:10
Sorry about that. It cut off most of my reply. Here's the full thing:

The PhaseCancel error seems to be normal, though I don't know if it's a Wine error or program error.. either way, I notice no adverse side effects from it. The MixOne fixme seems to occur with me as well on occasion, although the difference between mixlen and primary_done is usually very small (less-than-or-equal-to 4). Applying the set_thread_priority patch (which can be found in the wiki) may help with that, as well as clear up the sound stuttering issue. You'll also need the realtime-lsm kernel module (recommended for this) if you don't want to set the suid root bit, and you don't have another way to set the RLIMIT_RTPRIO resource limit (found in Linux kernel 2.6.13 and newer).

A warning, though: the set_thread_priority patch was not accepted into Wine because of the off-chance that a rogue program would be able to lock-up the system (it can start a time-critical thread and not rest, preventing other processes from getting any CPU time). I personally think the risk is small (since the same thing would happen on real Windows) compared to the benefits gained (clear, non-stuttering sound) and I've yet to run into any problems. However, to be safe, apply the patch at your own discretion.

RE: About 'Loading...'
by Genie on Thursday September 8th 2005, 21:57
To disable it (or to enable background loading) edit Morrowind.ini file (i coul'd find resonable value for priority, better than "-3"):

---- Morrowind.ini ----
[General]
;...
DontThreadLoad=0
ThreadPriority=-3
ThreadSleepTime=5
;...
---- Morrowind.ini ----
