I needed to run 'winetricks win98' before it would run. Before that, it would switched resolutions, and the display would look like my desktop.
If the game only shows a black screen, try starting it without the CD first (this should only have to be done once).

Try installing winetricks, and running 'winetricks win98'. That fixed the problem where the resolution would change, but the game wouldn't start properly.
