The most common cause of not having text in chat, menus, or settings is because of the lack of the required fonts. Make sure you have the following fonts properly installed: Verdana, Tahoma, and Arial.
counter-strike.lnk File
The .lnk file that is created after install can be safely deleted. The .lnk file is used by Windows in case any special parameters have been set when an .exe file is run. If you have problems and suspect that you need the .lnk file for any reason, simply go into Steam, and right-click on the game that needs the .lnk file, and select "Create Desktop Shortcut".
Â
The above applies to all .lnk files that are Steam based, including steam.lnk.
Problems with disconnecting from server
If you get disconnected from server, then just wait a while and connect back. This is because of bugged version of HLDS used by server.

CS 1.6 non-steam freezes at start.
by Adam Pajor on Friday June 17th 2011, 4:09
I tried to run CS1.6, worked perfectly, could play online, then I switched to OpenGL from D3D mode. Instant crash, can't move mouse cursor, keyboard doesn't react ---> hard reset.
I can't figure out, how to reset the settings, or how to set to D3D.
It was weird for me, because Linux supports OpenGL natively.
Fixes for freeze
by CORSIN Simon on Tuesday February 1st 2011, 4:59
By default, CS 1.6 just run fine then it randomly freeze. The only solution then is to reboot your computer or killall hl.exe using a SSH connection.
This is a wine issue.
You can partially resolve this problem by using the 1.3.3 version of wine. For this, install Steam by using PlayOnLinux, then force playonlinux to launch Steam with the 1.3.3 version of wine. Also add hl.exe to Windows 98 compatibility mode.
By doing this, the game will run fine without crash, but you may be disconnected sometimes (just reconnect then).
Only the 1.3.3 version seems to resolve the freeze problem.

cscz lags in multiplayer-mode
by Harmageddon on Saturday September 4th 2010, 5:29
I've got Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - Lucid Lynx and i've tried to play the Half-Life Version of CS-CZ using Wine. In the singleplayer-mode it works. But if I want to start a server, the game has very big lags. My graphics card is the Nvidia GeForce 210 witz 512 MB GDDR2. I already tried it with lower graphics settings but it doesn't work, too.
opengl gentoo amd64
by mmichel on Saturday December 19th 2009, 7:16
Hey guys. I have a problem with running counter-strike since some version of ati-drivers was released.
It seems to me, there were some major changes in ati opengl, for I could still run CS, if I installed the previous version of drivers on working system and played for a while, but had to reinstall newer cause X server wouldn't run with previous. I'm not able to do this anymore that flawlessly since older version is not in portage. I can confirm that opengl is ok for other games.
When first run in this conditions, it crashes after I click "servers" menu. All other tries end up earlier, the game draws two lower menu items, 'options' and 'quit', and crashes. There is not much console output without debugging on:
fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),0,0x33f514,0x00000000), stub!

I run nosteam version, xorg-server 1.6. Here is what fglrxinfo says:
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon HD 3850
OpenGL version string: 2.1.8918
ati-drivers' version is marked as 9.9 in gentoo portage.
If there are any clues what could issue a problem, any guesses and ideas are welcome.
P.S. I must also mention that I ran the game with another user's privileges and home folder, nothing changed. But I can still run it in software mode and d3d.

CS Crashes when starting the game
by Julio on Wednesday August 13th 2008, 11:20
I've installed the CS 1.6 in my Ubuntu 8.04 with wine 1.1.2,
But I have a big problem:
It starts normally and I can configure it.
But when I choose the "NEW GAME" option and start a new server game or when I find a network battle and start it, after 10 or 15 seconds the game stops and I have to turn it of closing the window.
I've already tested a lot of things and had no success.
My laptop is a Compaw 6910p with a Intel Integrated Video Card.

This simply fails to launch (via Steam GUI or via console), I get a lot of console output but nothing exceptionally useful, the main error seems to be:
Weird sound
by Kaljio on Sunday July 6th 2008, 11:06
Hello,
I have a serious sound problem with CS 1.6 since Wine 0.9.60 or so. The sounds are played much too fast, like 4 times the normal speed and sound very high. This happens with all possible playback settings in Wine and CS.
The problem occurs with the most recent CS 1.6 Steam, ALSA and OSS, Wine 1.1.0 on Debian Sid and 2.6.26rc7 kernel.
Xfce Panels
by Renārs Grīnbergs on Sunday June 29th 2008, 14:56
In Xubuntu 8.04 since Wine 0.9.60 desktop panels are visible on screen when game is running. It is only possible to hide panels by turning off window manager's control over wine but then the keyboard isn't working in game. In 0.9.60 panels weren't there but since 0.9.61 until 1.1.0 they won't go away when game is launched.
Freeze & forced to reboot
by Chris on Tuesday April 29th 2008, 15:37
I get the impression that random in-game freezes are down to video drivers predominantly. Has anyone got an ATI X300/X550/X1050 card and had this problem? If anyone knows a possible solution would be great to hear before I once and for all give up and get an nVidia.
Crashes laptop
by Nesh on Saturday April 5th 2008, 11:29

Screen refresh on mouse click
by Marco on Thursday January 31st 2008, 19:05
I don't really know, if im the only one getting this one, but here goes.
Counter strike works almost perfectly for me, but im gettig this problem/issue. So when i click on mouse i get my screen refreshed. I mean i see a screen that comes first when i load, and then back to normal. This doesnt bug me, when im in menu or somewhere simmilar, but when im shoothing, this is really a problem. Ah, yes, and this happens only in widowed mode. I googled and searched, and i dont see anyone talking about this problem, so maybe its just me getting this?
Im using fedora 7, on 2.6 kernel and wine 9.52.
nvidia-driver-problem
by TraveXaS on Friday January 18th 2008, 13:19
Why does the game not run with the newest nvidiadrivers? I am not able to install the older one. Is there a hope to get it to run with the new drivers?

Counter-Strike 1.6 Crash on startup
by ZyzR on Wednesday December 26th 2007, 13:10
I've got this little problem with Cstrike at this moment.
Whenever i try to start Counter-strike 1.6 a window loads and displays the welcoming screen sometimes i se text like options and exit but then the window just closes and leaves no explanations to why.
i've think i tried everything(Atleast as far as i know).
i'm running wine-0.9.49 maybe it is when i updated my kmod-nvidia drivers that this happened.
Would glady take any advice on how to fix this.
Although Steam starts normally Counter-Strike doesn' start after i click on it.
by Christian Sam on Sunday December 16th 2007, 10:31
I think this will be only a temporary problem, and it might affect not only Wine users, but since the introduction of the "Steam Community" feature i couldn't start Counter-Strike, because nothing happend after i clicked on Start.
If you are in a similiar situation maybe this workaround will help.
In Steam click on "File" > "Preferences" > "In-Game" (or something similar,i don't know the exact name of the tab because i'm using a german steam version)
Uncheck the checkbox, and your games should start like before.
---
I hope this will help you,
Christian Sam
PS:
Keep in mind that you changed this setting because it will maybe work some day.
Another note concerning my "One possible Solution for the "No Sound Problem" posting:
If you followed the instructions and encounter a "steamstartup(...) failed with error1: the registry is in use by another process, timeout expired" error when you were starting Counter-Strike, keep Steam open and try to start Counter-Strike again.
One possible Solution for the "No Sound Problem"
by Christian Sam on Saturday December 15th 2007, 16:32
I think since one of the latest Steam-Updates Sound stopped working for my Counter-Strike 1.6 Version. I'm using a Ensoniq ES1371 [AudioPCI-97] soundcard and never touched the standard Wine sound settings, but now i couldn't hear anything with OSS. I tried switching to ALSA, but then the sounds in Counter-Strike were very choppy and it ran with lag. I tried updating my Wine Version to "wine-0.9.36-2.fc5" but this didn't help in any way.
!!! Read on !!!
It's a German posting with settings for the Wine registry and an ALSA configuration file.
Between the two config-snippets on the website you will also find an instruction for the audio-tab of winecfg. "Switch the Hardware-Acceleration to "Emulation", and leave Driver-Emulation unchecked"
Another thing i wanna metion is, that i commented out the 4th line of the ALSA configuration file, which by the way, goes to ~/.asoundrc, (or /etc if you like)
BEFORE
# ALSA library configuration file
# Include settings that are under the control of asoundconf(1).
# (To disable these settings, comment out this line.)
LATER
# ALSA library configuration file
# Include settings that are under the control of asoundconf(1).
# (To disable these settings, comment out this line.)
#
I had never anything to do which ALSA configuration files, but i think you don't need this line.
