What works

Installation, uninstall, icons, document editing, saving, printing, MIDI playback using Timidity. Basic score editing features were tested and they work great. Finally the new document bug #3694 was fixed. Sibelius is useful!

It works much better and faster than current Finale under Wine.

What does not

Key signatures dialog contains streched entries, so no picture is viewable, only text C-Major etc.

Title for the score Hebrides by Felix Mendelssohn is wierd. Looks like end lines aren't correctly parsed by Wine so the whole title and author is in a single line.

What was not tested
Midi input, further score editing features.

How to enable basic functionality (opening/editing scores)

Note: This workaround is not required for the development version of wine. It is only necessary for wine 1.20.1 and below

Sibelius 4.0/4.1/4.15 requires gdiplus.dll to run. WINE supports the gdiplus library on its own, but does not have a fake DLL in place. Before the program can be run properly, an empty placeholder file named "gdiplus.dll" must be placed in the /windows/system32 directory of your WINE installation.

touch ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/gdiplus.dll

After doing so, run the Wine Configurator (winecfg) and add a DLL override in the "Libraries" tab. Set "gdiplus" to "builtin then native".

How to enable MIDI playback

Ubuntu (and possibly others) do not enable MIDI playback out-of-the-box. A MIDI-to-WAV mapper is required to enable score playback. Please consult your distribution's instructions as to how to enable MIDI playback.

Ubuntu 8.10
sudo apt-get install timidity

However, because of the translation layer in between the two sound systems, a lag is introduced. You can compensate for this through the "Playback Devices" dialogue.

Play -> Playback Devices -> Set "Delay" to 200 ms

How to fix displayed fonts

Sibelius 4's menu dialogues and score text require the package "msttcorefonts".

Ubuntu 8.10
sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts

Other distributions:
Please see: http://corefonts.sourceforge.net/

WARNING

Note: This workaround may not be required for Ubuntu Karmic Koala (9.10).

When installed via a package manager, TiMidity++ starts up prior to the PulseAudio sound system in Ubuntu, causing sound hogging when Sibelius is running (and vice versa).

To resolve this issue, restart the Timidity sound server before opening Sibelius.

sudo /etc/init.d/timidity restart

HOWTO

To get Kontakt Silver to play back correctly, you must select "Multimedia" as the sound source instead of "DirectSound" at the Kontakt options dialogue that opens up upon first running the program.
