The test results you have selected are very old and may not represent the current state of Wine.
Selected Test Results (selected in 'Test Results' table below)
What works
A lot, if you change some Wine settings
What does not
Sound stutters sometimes, especially at the end of lines of dialogue.
People don't render properly
Tags in Los Santos appear as if they have already been sprayed over
Game runs a bit slower than under Windows
What was not tested
Anything beyond the first few missions
Additional Comments
Sound is completely garbled unless you set Hardware Acceleration to 'Emulated' in the audio tab of winecfg.
People appear the colour of sky if pixel shaders are on. If shaders are off, the textures appear correctly and the heat haze is disabled (stops black boxes appearing on screen), but sometimes the models become garbled.
Some times gta may fail to start even when you haven't touched (modded) anything. In this case delete the file gta_sa.set inside the Documents/GTA San Andreas User Files directory and restart the app. You will have to reset your gta sa settings.
CJ and peds are too dark
If cj isn't light correctly and appears very dark try disabling glsl. You can disable it using the registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D\UseGLSL > "disabled" Or use winetricks/playonlinux
Slow Play
If you have problems with slow play, go to your winecfg and disable support for Vertex Shader and Pixel Shader
Controllers & Keyboards
Joysticks and joypads will create a conflict with the keyboard keys making the character (CJ) uncontrollable. Disable all controllers before running the game to avoid this issue.
Load a saved game not work
Try this: winetricks d3dx9
Intro videos not work
In some cases this fix can backfire, doing that your game does not start anymore.Make a backup of your .wine folder or create new wineprefix for test before continuing.
1) Install the ugly plugins for gstreamer (the name of package depends of your distribuition) 2) Install the quartz and devenum: winetricks quartz devenum 3) Install ffdshow: winetricks ffdshow (during installation, check the box of MPEG1 and MPEG2) 4) Test your game.
If you can not start your game, restore the backup or back to original wineprefix.#9127
Fonts Issue
If you have issues with fonts, try (type in the terminal): winetricks allfonts
Extracts all audio from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
this method extracts all audio from GTA San Andreas, includes all music, DJ chatter, ads, background sounds and cutscenes.
How to build
Do not use quotation marks or abbreviations (~), it will cause errors. If your path contains spaces, use a "\ " for a correct interpretation, for example:
The first arguments are the files to extract from. Then comes the
base directory to put the output files in, and lastly the file to read
metadata from.
audio/streams/* extracts all the musics and sounds. To extract some in specific, follow the table below:

ENB Series mod.
by Nero Rush on Thursday April 26th 2012, 15:43
I've recently been trying to run ENB Series on GTA:SA. "ENBSeries is the project of graphic modifications for games. [...] Many games may look much better and ENBSeries is the easiest way to improve them.". It's quite popular among gamers, and I haven't had much success running it. First of all, I opened a thread on the official mod forums, but the dev doesn't use Linux: enbdev.com/enbseries/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=613.
I had to force Wine to use the native d3d9 library with winecfg, then I installed the mod, and found out that Wine can't properly generate texture mipmaps automatically (a log file can be found on the mod forums' thread with a few screenshots). Then, with a bit of settings tweaking as advised by the dev, I've been able to run it but it lags a lot; I need someone to test the mod with a high-end graphic card. Ask questions!
Badlands
by jesse on Sunday December 4th 2011, 19:08
I'm running Wine 1.3.18 and Slackware 13.1
When attempting to snap a photo as required in the BadLands mission I get the following error message (subsequently crashing the game):
Program Error
The program gta_sa.exe has encountered a serious
problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience.
This can be caused by a problem in the program or a deficiency in
Wine. You may wan to check appdb.winehq.org for tips about
running this application.
If this problem is not present under Windows and has not been
reported yet, you can report it at bugs.winehq.org.
Can somebody please help me understand the terminal output?

Problems with wireless usb keyboard/mouse and graphics
by Nicolás M. on Wednesday November 16th 2011, 0:41
Hello :D!!
First of all, I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 x64 with Wine 1.3.28. The problem I have is that CJ moves forward all the time without me touching anything.
I know there are problems having a Joystick/joypad plugged in before start, but I'm using only my keyboard/mouse.
Both, the mouse and keyboard are wireless, so maybe it has something to do.
The graphics problem is the same (I think) that the one under "Common Problems" except that I could not fix it because the entry "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D\UseGLSL" is not present. I will try now with Playonlinux.
The game installed without problems with wine 1.3.28 and playonlinux.
Finally, MANY thanks for the great job of the Wine Developers and his partners :D.
HELP!I know this game is very old but i never managed to complete this game ever so i decided to install it. It installed and played fine but the problem is that when i want to save it would say " directory missing" so i guess it was the GTA USER FILE. i tried looking for it and it wasnt there so i reinstalled it 5 times and it still has the same problem. So somebody help me ! i really want to play this game without restarting right from the beginning.

Rest of the game out of the box works great. So any ideas?
Workaround for crashes?
by Raffaele on Sunday December 12th 2010, 10:35
The games crash with a loop loading screen (not always, but usually) with "Vertex Shader Support" and "Allow Pixel Shader" enabled... expecially when you enter somewhere or when you start a mission... any tips? (without these the graphic is very very poor).
Anybody able to get SALA (san andreas limit adjuster) to work?
by Jon-Luc Holmes on Monday December 6th 2010, 11:40
I want to use DeathSquad Industries SA420 but I have to use SALA due to the mods size and the amount of new objects being loaded into the map but SALA doesn't work. I have place all the files into my gta sa root directory and I have taken the # out of the things I need to be changed so it uses the amount I specify but no response and my game crashes while it loads!
"Program error - Program encountered a serious problem..." after startup.

Everyone, who get the error after starting up, should try this:
1) Install the complete game, including the sounds.
2) Apply the no-intro patch.
Worked for me, report if it works for you.
NUMA + wine + GTA:SA = fail
by nightwalk on Thursday June 10th 2010, 20:39
This game has worked for me out-of-the-box using just a bare wine config since at least 1.0.3. However, I've found that it has serious issues on NUMA-based systems that make it unplayable.
Anything beyond the menu runs at normal speed for ~1 second, then freezes for about 2-5 seconds, runs normally for another second, then goes back out to lunch. Rinse, lather, repeat.
Locking the game to a single core using taskset has no effect, using a realtime kernel (and running the game with realtime priority) has no effect, and it also doesn't seem to matter what type of video card is used. Disabling power saving features in the BIOS, and changing to the 'Performance' governor also didn't improve the situation any.
My best guess is that it has something to do with interrupts raised as a result of the processors "talking" to each other, and I don't know that there's a non-code work-around for it.
For reference, the latest system where I'm running into this problem uses an ALiveNF7G-HD720p motherboard, an AMD Phenom(tm) 9750 (2.4Ghz), and 4x2Gb DDR2 800Mhz memory modules. It has also happened on numerous other Athlon64 & Athlon64 X2-based systems (all NUMA).
In fact, the only system I've ever gotten this working on is an Intel-based HP Pavilion dv9500 laptop (non-NUMA), and it works just as well under wine as it does under windows -- ditto for SA:MP.
Naturally, the game has worked fine under windows on *all* of the hardware I've ever ran it on, so I think it's fair to assume this is a wine bug.
Until it's fixed, if you want to play this game under linux, I'd suggest using a non-I7 Intel-based system.
Joypad Axis issue
by Lance Moore on Thursday May 13th 2010, 22:25
I'm having trouble with the joypad configuration on my Foxconn controller. The left-right axis on the left analog stick controls both the camera movement, and the player movement as well. This makes driving very difficult and awkward.
I would like to switch the left-right axis of the left analog stick for camera movement, to the right analog stick, so that it functions exactly how it does on PS2, with the right analog stick controlling the camera, and the left controlling the player.
Is this a bug that only I'm experiencing? I can't seem to find anyone with the same issues...

EAX sound issue fix :)
by Grams79 on Thursday March 11th 2010, 12:40
After testing once again with a fresh install on a fresh OS.
Here are my findings to help eliminate the dreaded EAX sound bug.
Don't understand this sound bug? I will briefly explain.
GTASA was designed with EAX technology (eax.dll) and Microsoft Direct Sound Library (dsound.dll).
Something to do with Creative Sound Systems, 5.1 surround bla bla.
Well... WINE doesn't support it in this case.
In game the sound bug is much like this, I will explain.
Ambient sounds such as vehicle motors and footsteps are extremely low.
The only time these sound effect become clear is when the 3rd person cam position is near the model where the sound effect resides.
On the other hand sound effects from gunshots and the character CJ speaking are very loud.
This after 5 minutes this bug can make a gamer go mad! lol
At first I tackled the EAX.
Everyone since 2005 suggested a downgrade of the eax.dll.
I've tried these versions: 2.6.0.0, 3.0.1.0, 3.0.6.2, 3.0.6.5, 3.0.6.6, 4.0.0.0, 4.0.0.1
I don't believe any longer that this is a valid fix.
Many suggested changing from FULL to BASIC acceleration.
Go to ~./wine and open user.reg with gedit.
Located [Software\\Wine\\DirectSound] and find "HardwareAcceleration"="????"
Change it to "HardwareAcceleration"="Basic" and save.
That doesn't seem to change much now.
So to continue to the solution I have found.
DSOUND.DLL
Version: 5.3.2600.2180
FIXED MY ISSUE!
Backup your dsound.dll from original wine install found in system32.
Go into wine configuration and then libraries.
Type in dsound and set native, builtin.
Usb hub

I got my mouse and external keyboard hooked up to my laptop via a USB hub (4-port), nothing else is connected to it, I also have an external HDD connected via a different usb slot, as well as a fan in another, when I play the game, I can't control my keyboard on either the laptop or the external keyboard. I have to restart the computer to get control back, any ideas why?
How to enable unusual video mode
by Ruslan on Monday January 11th 2010, 19:18
I have EEE PC with 1024x600 screen. In windows GTASA does find this mode and allows to set it to play. But in wine, be it virtual desktop or usual window, i get 800x600 and 640x480 as the only options. I tried adding different modes via xrandr, but this didn't help.
Does anyone know how to make GTASA use the needed mode?
5 YEAR SOUND ISSUE FIX
by Grams79 on Saturday January 9th 2010, 10:44
There has been a scream for help from many people who could not get the sound to work correctly for years!!
I can not believe that people have not noticed this issue as much as others such as Christian Nolte.
bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14896
The sound issue makes car engines, foot steps and other sounds very quiet while Carl's voice, gun shots and police very loud.
THIS IS A NIGHTMARE WHEN CARL YELLS AT YOU.
The EAX is at fault and I've got the cure.
I'm not 100% sure if this will work for all others.
Do try and report back here with confirmation.
Solution:
1. Go into wine configuration and then libraries.
2. Type in dsound and set native, builtin.
3. Type in eax and set native, builtin.
The next step is to set audio hardware acceleration to BASIC.
This was hard to do since the update of wine where only FULL and EMULATION is available for option.
Go to ~./wine and open user.reg with gedit.
Located [Software\\Wine\\DirectSound] and find "HardwareAcceleration"="????"
Change it to "HardwareAcceleration"="Basic" and save.
Hope this helps everyone!!!!!

How to start the game on intel etc. video cards
by Ruslan on Sunday September 20th 2009, 10:55
If you are using Mesa driver for your video card (e.g. intel), you will get no textures in the menu, and trying to start new game will crash the game. This is because the game uses patented texture compression algorithm, which is left out of Mesa for legal reasons. To get GTA SA working, you have to get libtxc_dxtn.so library. Once you install it, GTA will work.
You can read about this library and download source from here:

Can't run San Andreas
by MrZammler on Thursday August 13th 2009, 2:55
Seems I'm the only one who can't run San Andreas?
Tried both 1.1.25 and 1.1.26, the game run just once (and worked well for that one)! For all other times, screen gets garbled, no wine activity, and can't get any wine debug. Only way out is to restart X.
I'm using a no-cd crack, can't get the game to run without, keeps looking for the cd/dvd. Are you guys using no-cd ?
Making the mod "Things to do in San Andreas 'Till you die" work
by John on Thursday July 23rd 2009, 13:03
Normally, running gta_sa.exe with this mod under wine 1.1.26 will cause the game to crash upon booting a new game. To alleviate this problem and still get most of the benefit of the mod, using sanny builder, decompile the main.scm, and comment out all the lines of text starting with (minus the quotes) "0181:" and "00C4:"
Recompile the main.scm, and you should be able to start a new game without a hitch.
The features lost by doing this are as follows: motorbike police don't change models depending on region, helicopter models don't change depending on your wanted level, and license plates do not get anisotropic filtering.
Intel video card vs nvidia logs
by Ruslan on Monday June 15th 2009, 15:54
I logged wine actions with WINEDEBUG=+d3d variable starting gtasa on intel and nvidia cards. It seems that the only errors which may have some sense in for this problem:
trace:d3d:test_arb_vs_offset_limit OpenGL implementation does not allow indirect addressing offsets > 63
trace:d3d:test_arb_vs_offset_limit error: "1054: integer value out of range"
note: these logs are from different machines with different distros, but i think it shouldn't matter much since the problem is 100% reproducible for non-nvidia cards.

Slow performance? Try this:
by rswoods on Wednesday May 20th 2009, 0:23
I was getting some pretty ridiculously slow performance on this game and no amount of turning down the effects was working. When I opened the stream.ini file in the SA directory and changed "memory" and "dev_kit memory" up waaaay higher (i set them at 50000) performance sped up to where it was actually playable and enjoyable. Good luck !

Control problem
by Jan Kaláb on Saturday March 14th 2009, 4:55
Hi,
I've a little problem with my controls. It seems like forward and left is always pressed. So CJ is still running diagonaly. And also in menus, the sliders (like volmue or mouse sensitivity) are always decreasing when mouse cursor is above them. Any idea what's wrong and how may I fix this? I've Ubuntu 8.10 64bit and Wine 1.1.16 (waiting for 17.deb).
P.S. It's not joystick problem because I don't own any.
