8.) When patching the game to 1.1 the patch program hangs when writing
@all:You have to kill before it hangs(i.e. with the xkill command on a console,
and then click on the window). The window with the
problem is a installer that pops when patching, if you kill that
window, the patcher works as spected
9.) Objects and units are not rendered properly

This installed fine for me but was unplayable due to terrible lag in moving the mouse or panning the camera. Found that I had to turn off compiz to get it to work. Easiest way is to install fusion-icon which allows you to switch windows managers. Thought I would post this in case anyone encounters similar problem.
Did anybody managed to get multiplayer working?
I tried both ways described on wiki.winehq.org/DirectPlayGames in different prefixes, still no luck. Attempting to host/join tcp/ip or LAN game causes error: "Network unavailable". Console output (no debug):

I just noticed that this game is supposed to render stencil shadows. As yet I have not seen this work with Wine. I only played it briefly in Windows way back when I used to use Windows, so I'm not totally sure. Do shadows work for anyone else?

Complete newbie here. This is the first game I've tried to install under wine. I've replaced the regular .exe with a nocd version (for 1.0), and the program seems to launch, but then the screen goes blank and my monitor gives a message along the lines of, "Settings out of range, set to 1200 x 1024..." and then the monitor turns off. When I hit ctl-alt-del, the screen turns back on and the shutdown menu appears. Behind it I can see the game screen with a message saying my nvidia driver needs to be updated, but it already is. Any suggestions?

when objects and units are not rendered properly, try '-noVBO' option.
this disables the use of Vertex Buffer Objects, and might decrease the performance of the game.
And according to my personal experiments, '-nopbuffer' option, which also slows down the game, is not neccessary anymore (1.1.26) but may vary from system to system.
Resolution of the Stuttering Problem

I finally found a way to reduce (and in my case remove) the stuttering when moving the camera in game.
When I messed around with the ingame settings I saw that its getting a lot worse if I turn all the settings down for "speed".
My fps then where (without moving the camera) over 200fps. But when I moved the camere it was stuttering awfully.
So I thought maybe this game needs slow graphics.
What worked in the end was turning both AA and AF in the nvidia-settings dialogue to their full settings (16x) and now it works extremely fluid at about 60fps. (you should turn vsync on for this)
if your graphics are to weak you should try a few combinations of AA and AF.
The simple but effective trick is to limit the ingame fps, so a native fps limiter ingame would really be cool, but i didnt find a option like this in the configs.

I have the same problem under windows as under wine, game is laggy and jumpy but when I set "VSYNC" under windows everything works fine and fast. Same options have no effect under wine and if I set it via nvidia-settings Wine crashes EVERY time something tries to use 3D or something like that I tested it with EVE-Online and it crashed about the moment the first 3D thing should have been shown. Does anybody have the same problem (it's nVidia 8800 GTS) ?
And btw the game works with and without any options (-nopbuffer or not no effect). wine-1.1.21.

Strait out of the box. AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+
3GB of RAM with GeForce 8600 GT dual head with compiz using the 2.6.24-23-generic kernel for x86_64.
Runs smooth, but I notice that the engines don't have their glow when larger ships move. I'm sure there are other visual effects missing. No framerate drop / lag or CPU hogging that I can tell.
After running the patch (I did have to xkill the window during the installer per the instructions above) I got the securerom silliness, dropped in my nocd homeworld2.exe version and only then can I run "windowed" without the -nopbuffer option.
I haven't tried multiplayer yet, but it will be my next target.
laggy camera control tweak

I've found camera control is much improved by setting "Vertex Shader Support" to "None" in winecfg:
- under Applications, add Homeworld2.exe
- under Graphics / Direct3D, set Vertex Shader Support to None
It's still not perfect, especially when the camera is aimed at a lot of background space effects (nebulas, clouds, etc) and for a few seconds after beginning a new mission, but it helps somewhat after that. No other tweaks in the game's video settings or winecfg's Graphics settings seemed to have any effect at all.
