Description
Fable is a role-playingvideo game for Xbox, Mac OS X, and Windows platforms. It was developed by Big Blue Box, a satellite developer of Lionhead Studios, and was published by Microsoft.

Fable takes place in the fictional world of Albion. Players assume the role of an orphaned boy who realizes his dream of becoming a hero. The choices players make in the game affect the perception and reaction to their Hero by the characters of Albion, and change the Hero's appearance to mirror what good or evil deeds the Hero has performed. In addition to undertaking quests to learn what happened to the Hero's family, players can engage in optional quests and pursuits such as trading, romance, and theft.

Fable was expanded and rereleased as Fable: The Lost Chapters for Xbox and Windows PC platforms in September 2005. The game was later ported to Mac OS X by Feral Interactive.

The Lost Chapters features all the content found in the original Fable, as well as additional new content such as new monsters, weapons, alignment based spells, items, armor, towns, buildings, and expressions, as well as the ability to give children objects. The story receives further augmentation in the form of nine new areas and sixteen additional quests. Characters such as Briar Rose and Scythe, who played only minor roles in the original game, are now given more importance and are included in certain main and side quests.

What works

MSI.

Where do you want to install this?

Install for all users?

If you don't understand, think clearly and say to your self "These things work."

What does not

The game copies the first CD then exits with a generic MSI "-1627 ERROR_FUNCTION_FAILED". That's "Error, function failed" and not "We had a problem with the Error Function."

Is this related to a CD/EJECT problem? Possibly an unmounting issue?

Cedega does not work, I can't get into Fable's MSI for various reasons /w diffrent settings.

What was not tested

Additional Comments

I don't have windows > 3.11 ;)

I've been trying to install this using wine and got as far as the product key screen. However, when I got there, it refused to let me enter the required five characters in the first box; I could only enter four. The other boxes worked quite well.

I'm not sure if this error is because of wine or not, but if anyone knows how to solve it I would be very grateful.

To get sound to work on Fable I put ALSA from emulation to full.

wisotool now knows how to install this
by Dan Kegel on Thursday October 28th 2010, 20:45
Turns out wisotool is able to install this game properly.
I added the verb just now,
code.google.com/p/winezeug/source/detail?r=1731
it'll be in the next release.

Success report...
by Dan Kegel on Thursday October 28th 2010, 17:05
I couldn't copy the contents of the four cd's, so I installed
on Windows, copied over the installed game, and put disc 1 in
the drive.

Short story: with wine-1.3.5, this game needs
winetricks vcrun6 wmp9 quartz devenum d3dx9_36
and is playable - just be sure to skip each intro video, or it hangs.

Long story:

On launch, it hung in the splash screen, and the log showed

err:module:import_dll Library msvcrt.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\windows\\system32\\msvcr71.dll") not found
err:module:import_dll Library MSVCRT.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\windows\\system32\\MFC42.DLL") not found
err:module:import_dll Library MFC42.DLL (which is needed by L"C:\\users\\dank\\Temp\\DW210f4.tmp") not found

I worked around that with 'winetricks vcrun6'.

The game then started up and was somewhat playable.
On startup, the game complained
"Unable to play video."
You could click past it, but it was still annoying.
I worked around that with 'winetricks wmp9 quartz devenum'.

The title card background (while waiting briefly for game to load),
as well as any rendered scenes, are mostly black.
I worked around this with 'winetricks d3dx9_36'.

After that, the game seems nicely playable so long as you
don't let any of the intro videos finish (press ESC or left mouse
before they finish to skip them), else the game hangs;
you see the message

err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x48ada0 "?" wait timed out in thread 0023, blocked by 0021, retrying (60 sec)

btall seems to show several blocked threads involving wmv or quartz, all part of Fable.exe.

Also, the game seems to hang services.exe and winedevice.exe on exit...
there's a deadlock with some copy-protection exe in Temp?

White screen on Fable.exe launch
by Eric Runnebaum on Wednesday May 27th 2009, 0:02
I think I've followed all of the recommended items on this application including downloading winetricks, and installing directx9, wmp9, and the appropriate recommended Mfc42.dll.

I have an ATI 1650 PRO with DRI using the open source Radeon driver. When I launch the program, I sometimes get errors (some in the command line, some in windows or wine error windows, some of which seem to concern video. I get the Fable splash screen, followed by a momentary dark screen, followed up a blank white screen with the sound of footsteps and what might be the cutting of wood or other chopping sounds (the opening cut screen). Then the screen closes, and the game will crash with an unhelpfully generic error, which I then have to kill by closing X.

Any ideas on what else to try.

Bug: Fable is not working anymore since 1.1.11
by Fernando Martins on Wednesday March 18th 2009, 1:42
Fable is working in version 1.1.10 but not subsequent versions. I reported the bug identifying the patch that introduced the regression: bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17774

Since I'm not a maintainer, I'm registering the bug in the comments section.

getting rid of the black halos
by Fernando Martins on Sunday March 15th 2009, 13:43
For those who run Fable (it works for me with wine 1.1.10) and have the black halo, this can be removed by setting some registry values, as indicated in the comments of bug bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12143.

In a terminal, run regedit and under

/HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/Direct3D

set or add the string values:

"OffscreenRenderingMode"="fbo"
"VertexShaderMode"="hardware"
"VideoMemorySize"="512"

replacing 512 by the amount of memory of your card (in MB), which you can check, e.g. with nvidia settings.

Did you copy the "dxd9_36.dll" to your wine's system32 folder? I assume you did. So it's been un-unimplemented :D

BTW, It worked for me with wine 1.1.10 (except sound was shuttering),
but after upgrading to wine 1.1.15, I can no longer play. Just the menu (sound works perfectly, but thats no longer important).

I think downgrading wine is an option

Fable Crashes when new game is pressed
by Niklas on Saturday February 14th 2009, 2:55
It's very anoying. since i got it installed and it starts fine i come to the menus and can change the settings but i can't create a new game.

It's probably becouse of wine3d and dxd9_36.dll that's not implementet correctly.
if one is to trust the backtrace i get from wine.

Is there anyone that had this problem and managed to circumvent it or solve it?

"upside-down tree" solution
by D on Tuesday December 9th 2008, 20:25
The white backgrounded upside-down tree that pops up in the minimap goes away if you turn "mesh detial" all the way down in the video options.

Got it to install, but now it crashes
by Daenyth on Friday August 1st 2008, 18:32
I managed to install it by copying the files from all 4 discs to one dir and then running setup. Now though I get this crash when I try to run it: pastebin.ca/1090275

Error 1603
by Daenyth on Friday August 1st 2008, 10:09
I'm running wine 1.1.2 on Arch Linux i686. I get as far as the first disk, but after it asks me to insert disk 2 (and I do), I get a dialog box with
"Error: -1603 Fatal error during installation. Consult windows installer help (msi.chm) or MSDN for more information"

The last few lines of console output:
err:msi:ready_media Cabinet not found: L"I:\\Disk2C~1.cab"
err:msi:ACTION_InstallFiles Failed to ready media
err:msi:ITERATE_Actions Execution halted, action L"InstallFinalize" returned 1603
err:ole:ClientRpcChannelBuffer_SendReceive called from wrong apartment, should have been 0x1800000041
err:ole:xCall RpcChannelBuffer SendReceive failed, 8001010e

The installer seems to close but remains running and in my taskbar, I have to kill it.

The installer says that the system has not been modified, but to get the installer to run again I have to rm C:/Program Files/Microsoft Games/Fable/
Then run regedit and remove everything under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components\
I also have to remove HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Fable
