WARNING

This section is mainly focused for unmodded Bridge Commander

If you wish to add test data or performance tweaks about mods of Bridge Commander please report it here

When reporting a test result please add your video card and driver version, thank you.

Note
The game seems to have problems with ATI Radeon cards. I use the opensource driver, and have a very slow overall appearance of the game (The same appears with the proprietary driver). Even the mouse pointer does not move smoothly (As if the bug above is not resolved yet for ATI cards??) Apart from being very slow, everything works, even the videos.

Because of driver problems, Intel video cards which are commonly used in Laptops will be too slow for this game.
Nvidia cards with the closed source driver are working fine.

If you have problems with Sound try the set Audio Quality to High: For this open options.cfg in a Text editor and change ProviderReserveList=LowQualitySoftware to ProviderReserveList=HighQualitySoftware
Kobayashi Maru users can change this under Game Options.

HOWTO

Installing Bridge Commander

Bridge Commander installs without problems from original disc.

Updating to version 1.1

Bridge Commander installs without problems running the executable patch through wine.

Other considerations

1. You may need a fixed exe

2. Fastest way to test if game is working is through Quickbattle. Load the game, configure it and test 3d with the Quickbattle Button.

3. If you run this game from a vfat drive, I highly recommend to use the mount option shortname=winnt. Else BCs internal Python interpreter can run into a lot trouble with case sensitivity of files.Black screen on start may be caused by this.

How did you reproduce it? I havn't noticed any change.

Modding
by Harley T. Davis on Thursday October 6th 2011, 15:37
Has anybody Gotten the Model Property Editor to work? I can work with meshes and textures, but for some reason, the property editor only shows a black screen when you open up an NIF. Perhaps I should install an NIF package alongside? Maybe plant the D3D dlls in the same directory? I'll try both, but I'd appreciate any input.
By the way, sound on 1.3.24 rocks. Sometimes a chop comes in, but only along with video when graphics are set too high.

Sound issues
by Harley T. Davis on Sunday October 2nd 2011, 3:37
I'm on Mac osx 10.6
I was getting some intermittent sound at best... ...still am with the latest build... ...could be an xcode issue... ...Still checking.
However, I noticed several inconsistent values that, when applied in tandemn with the driver of my sound card, gave beautiful sound. OSX no longer fully supports the OSS or ALSA system unless you use a very old wine build, which removes certain improvements.
Using the Core-Audio driver, I was able to achieve some decent results, setting the audio panel to a 48000 khz, and 16bit output, which is supported by my sound card driver. Now, the audio on the game was still sketchy, sometimes nonexistent. With my graphics card configuration, I had to utilize several parts of the CFG file in the games install directory in wine. By altering the output (normally 22050) to match the output of my sound graphics(48000), and matching the wine config to my sound, I was able to get sound back, albeit still a little buggy.
This may have to do with 16bit program support being missing from the wrappers. You need to be able to build your own with 16bit support, and you need to match the wine graphics controllers to your graphics configuration (you can use winecfg or if you use a wineskin-like base-wrapper, you can probably use winetricks for some). Once that's done, you need to get the output of the game to match. Unfortunately, many builds are losing the 8 and 16bit support of the ALSA and OSS audio due to SDK issues. This can be corrected by simply using the older SDK's, or one that's known to work, so that the 16bit support and the sound driver support are not lost. However, if you use a core-audio, or direct audio sampler that matches your OS, you can get sound back, just a bit buggy. Again, ALSA, OSS do not work on mac with the latest builds of wine.
With any graphics in wine, if your graphics card cannot be matched by sizing and specification of hardware, it is difficult to run programs that rely heavily on gfx processing, like games. When your graphics card matches up properly with the game, you won't have a problem. Unfortunately, the drivers for graphics are always changing, and so is the support for them in WINE. Without the 16bit support native, you won't have much luck with this program. 16bit support for the program running in wine is what you need. Without it, you won't get the results you want. The grfx won't sync together properly.
Other than that, make sure your file permisions are all set correctly, without those, Wine has trouble accessing files in the wrapper.
Mine has the KBM1.0 entire package installed as a mod. I also have a clean install prepped, just need to copy\paste the folder in the right place to set up. I will test and comment later.

No ingame sound
by ben on Friday November 12th 2010, 11:59
I experienced exactly the same as already posted here. That means sound in videos at the beginning, beeps in game menu, but no ingame sound. I followed almost every instructions concerning PulseAudio, ALSA and OSS - no change. I also tried compiling Wine by myself with mpg123 option enabled. I also used winetricks - no luck.
Im running latest Ubuntu 10.10 64bit with nvidia graphics and Intel sound and currently Wine 1.2 from Ubuntu reps. Did test it with latest Wine 1.3, again no change.

Any changes since August ?

Ben

Installing?
by Isaac on Saturday September 5th 2009, 15:37
It might just be me, but the installer doesn't work?
the demo32 autostart froze on me, so I bypassed by running the setup.exe in the setup folder.
That setup got up to 99% of the loading the install wizard, stuck there for a long time, then exited without doing anything else.

ATI Radeon slowness
by Carl-Daniel Hailfinger on Saturday August 1st 2009, 18:32
A thread with lots of useful info about the STBC slowness with ATI Radeon cards using the opensource radeon driver has been vandalized 2009-05-16 by user "Nathan.N".

That bug still exists with a clean wine install of Wine 1.1.26.

If anyone has backups of the deleted comments, I'd appreciate if they could post them as replies to this comment so others can benefit from the info as well. Thanks.

No Audio in Star Trek Bridge Commander
by Lysdestic on Monday December 1st 2008, 20:56
I've seen the bugs that are supposedly fixed, but I'm still having a slightly different issue.

The games starts and the opening movies play with sound, once the menu comes up you can hear the beeping, but none of the background music, then when playing the game, no audio at all, whether it be voices, music, or sound effects.

Any ideas?

Wine version is 1.1.9
OpenSUSE 11.0
Any other specs, ask.
