Thank you for taking the time to address my issue. In answer to your questions:
1) What version of Wine are you using?
1.0.0 just released.
2) Did your installation of CMX go smoothly?
Yes...but for the comment i made that the Vista installation prompted for all three disks and the wine installation did not, the installation seemed to have been completed and the program seems to start up...i was able to create a login profile. Yet subsequent startups give me this weird screen (will add screenshot to AppDB entry).
3) Are you using anything fancy in terms of window management? (Compiz, Beryl, etc.)
Not when I first did the install. Afterward I setup compiz, and everything works in that regard.
Also, I assume you're having the same black screen problem that I described. Is that the case?
Well, it's not exactly black...there is graphics visible, but it's all jumbled...will add screenshot.

What do you think...should I file a bug under the version I'm maintaining (1.0.3) because the new Wine seems to break what progress was made under 1.0.0-rc1?

Installation Problem
by Calvin Mitchell on Monday June 23rd 2008, 1:54
I installed Chessmaster 10th Edition on Vista, and was prompted for all three CDs. When Installing under wine 1.0.0 the Installation appeared to complete sucessfully with only CD No. 1.
black window, freeze
by Evan on Friday June 20th 2008, 20:40
Hi,
I can't seem to get it running. On Ubuntu 8.04 and Wine 1.0, I set 2d boards and opengl in cmsettings.exe and turned off let window manager control window in winecfg.
It will run the intro video, but then blacks out and freezes with the following error:
user@host:/media/sda1/Program Files/Ubisoft/Chessmaster 10th Edition$ wine Chessmaster.exe

I love this game and really want to get it running! Any thoughts? Everything seems fine until those LockWindowUpdates...

Errors when running...
by Tony Walker on Sunday February 4th 2007, 15:45
I copied the CD's as you described above. The install when fine, but when I run Chessmaster.exe, I get the following errors:
err:module:import_dll Library ntoskrnl.exe (which is needed by L"C:\\windows\\system32\\drivers\\SECDRV.SYS") not found
err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"C:\\windows\\system32\\drivers\\SECDRV.SYS" failed, status c0000135

Wine Version = 0.9.29 (installed via apt)
Windows Version: Windows XP

The problem with the performance is that when the game "thinks", everything on the computer is affected. The mouse cursor gets sluggish and you can't do anything. The impression is that the game is "almost there"... that just a little workaround can make it work much better.
I don't know if a dll override would make it run better, but if someone understand something about that, please test and give some input.
Also, I don't know how to avoid the wine process take over all my CPU capacity, and make my computer responsive while I'm playing.
Maybe some extra configurations could make this game more playable.
How to install
by Jerônimo Backes on Thursday September 14th 2006, 9:23
I managed to install Chessmaster 10th by copying the contents of the image files into a common directory (e.g. /home/you/chessmaster)
Then I executed the installer from that directory (i.e. wine /home/you/chessmaster/setup.exe). No CD exchange was needed, and the installation finished successfully.

playable with opengl
by Vyracocha on Tuesday March 14th 2006, 14:01
I submitted the chessmaster's 10th edition to the winehq application database. After playing with wine options in winecfg,i managed to get it working with opengl, there are some video and sound problems, but it's playable.
Here's what i did:
- In winecfg deselect the checkbox "Allow the window manager to control the window" in the Graphics label.
- Run Chessmaster.exe in windows xp emulation,or you can leave with the default setting.
The installer has some problems though, it doesn't asks for the 2 and 3 cd's,and i don't know the reason.I've had to install the game in a win32 partition, and i then copied it in the installation path of a previous installation, inside the wine directory.
So,the game works fine with opengl, when i submitted it i said that it was garbage, because i couldn't install or even run it.Besides the installation, the game is playable.
Hope this helps.
Bye.
P.S.
I tested it under slackware 10.2, wine 0.9.9, kernel 2.6.15.4.
