Although Sierra removed the demo file from their FTP, it
still can be obtained from several major download sites (google for
warofthering_demo.exe).
There are at least two versions of the demo lying around, one
released on 2003-09-20 and one on 2003-09-21. They only differ in the
install directory name and a slight change in the ReadMe.txt file.
Also, since the file is legaly redistributable (as shown by the
fact that many major download sites provide it), I'm pasting the
corresponding ed2k URLs for both files, which may be useful in case it is removed in the sites that are currently mirroring it.
Old test results
The test results you have selected are very old and may not represent the current state of Wine.

What works
Install mostly works, but aborts with error when chain-loading into the game.
(or so it seems, since the game was installed in "Program Files", and the error message is the same than when running the game manualy (see below))
What does not
$ wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/War\ of\ the\ Ring\ Demo/Rings_Demo.exe
fixme:midi:OSS_MidiInit Synthesizer support MIDI in. Not supported yet (please report)
err:seh:fpe_handler Got unexpected trap 19
Do not start the game using Un*x paths (e.g. wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/War\ of\ the\ Ring\ Demo/Rings_Demo.exe). These won't work because of bug 7663. Use the win32 form instead.
Additionally, if you have a multi-core CPU, use schedtool to work around thread unsafety issues. The complete command would be:
schedtool -a 0x1 -e wine 'c:\Program Files\War of the Ring Demo\Rings_Demo.exe'
If terrain appears and disappears constantly please check that registry key OffscreenRenderingMode is set to backbuffer.
