What works
In this instance, it does not work.
What does not
With version 7.0.9, Adobe has included an optimizer called FEAD into the installer of Acro Reader. This module first scans the entire Windows PC for available services, and has little or no chance of working under WINE. When I first tried to run it, it finished with a core dump, but without installing Acro Reader 7.
Next, I tried using the library override for 'msvcrt.dll' , since "msvrt.dll" is just a common misspelling. But then the FEAD optimizer must have tried to scan the Linux computer through the native dll, and the whole computer locked up.
Adobe has refused to give any instructions on how to bypass FEAD.
What was not tested
There was no working application installed, to be tested.
Additional Comments
Since Acro Read 5.0.5 seems to install and run fine, I recommend that people download that one giving the Adobe Web site Winodws 98 as their platform. After all, there might be some chance that an app uses PDF files for Help, which should then also open under WINE.
