Additional Comments
In order to get the game testing mode running, you must enable the virtual desktop. Otherwise you get an error message.
The maker itself has no problems.
You should know that changing from "normal"map layers (up & down map drawing layers) to event layer works *much* slower than on Windows. It doesn't affect rm2k3 games itself but while creating game you'll have to wait few seconds when you switching layers. Switching from top to down layers and vice versa altough works as much quick as on Windows.
//edit: It was fixed in recent Wine builds though
HOWTO: Enabling midi music
Normally you can't hear MIDI music in RPG Maker's games. But I know how to use it! First you have to install timidity package from your's distribution package manager. Installed? Ok. Let's go to funny part.
BEFORE running game created with rpg maker 2k(3) you should type following command in Run Command window (usually you can run this window by pressing Alt+F2 combination). Command is
timidity -iA
You should type it as I typed. This command is case-sensitive. Now you can just run any RPG Maker's games except those made in XP and VX version. Note that in PowerMode2003 you will be unable to hear any sound, even if you typed this command properly.
I think this would be good idea to put link to this command into your window-manager startup.
HOWTO: MP3
When you try to use mp3 files in RM you can get strange OLE Error (Random Numbers). To resolve this problem you should install wine-mp3 package.

Update on layer switching.

I can't see with the naked eye any loading lag when switching between tiles and event layers. Perhaps my machine is just better than anybody else's :)

somebody at
fourisland.com/blog/the-mystery-of-the-ancient-fountain-of-dreams/ says he made a game with "rm2k3", and it runs fine on wine
except "a) the background music doesn't work and b) the video at the beginning of the game causes WINE to crash. To get around this, you can load Save File 1 which puts you right after the video has ended."
