Additional Comments

Sound cuts out after a very short period of time. This causes the game to refuse to move between cut scenes, and to complete a scenario. Disabling sound with the +noSound option at invocation will remove this problem, however the cut scenes will still show... without subtitles.

Old Errors/Problems

These errors/problems have been reported on older versions of wine, but are listed here (along with possible solutions) in case they pop up again.

Problem:  Flickering water and/or memory leak
Solution:  Set graphics detail to low and increase your swap size.

Problem:  MS EULA Appears below AoM logo on first launch.
Solution:  Focus the window using the taskbar or Alt+Tab and then use Alt+A to agree.

Problem:  You need MSXML 4.0
Solution:  Use the version included on the install CD.  Type "wine msiexec /i msxml.msi" to install.

Problem:  The installer can't find PidGen.DLL.
Solution:  Copy PidGen.DLL from the installation CD and place it in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32.

HOWTO

AoM installation may require:

* MFC42.DLL

If nothing happens after you click "Next" on the CD Key input screen, you may need this file.

Download this file from dll-files and place it in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32.  Add a new override (see below).

Adding an Override

Run "winecfg" from the command line.  Click the "Libraries" tab at the top of the window that appears.

Type the name of the library into "New override for library:" (type "pidgen" for PidGen.DLL).  Click "Add",

make sure that "(native, builtin)" appears next to the library you just added.  If it doesn't highlight the new

override and click "Edit" select "Native then builtin" and click "OK" and finally click "OK".

"Initialization Failed"?
by Roger F. on Monday July 25th 2011, 19:22
I too have been running into the "initialization failed" errors, but only on macs. My Ubuntu laptop is fine. Both are running wine 1.2.2. I'm not sure quite how to get a log, as nothing that I look at (either the wine log or the syslog) is spitting out the usual wine-like text. My mac is widescreen, but so is my laptop, so that can't be it. I've tried different resolutions, to no avail. I have pidgen, msxml, and mfc42 loaded onto my wine folder, so that probably isn't it. What am I doing wrong?

I have it running perfectly.

This is how I got it to run, with sound, in Ubuntu 10.10

1. Use a No-CD crack to replace aomx.exe

2. Set aomx.exe to run in Windows XP Mode

3. Change sound in wine to OSS

4. Start Age of Mythology, and go to options, set it to run in a window, turn off hardware sound acceleration.

5. Run wine padsp "aomx.exe" xres= yres= at a resolution slightly lower than your current desktop resolution. (It will open in a window)

My resolution is 1920x1200 so I use:

padsp wine "aomx.exe" xres=1900 yres=1125

If your mouse isn't lining up in the right place, try a slightly smaller resolution until it works.

Happy playing!

This should result in a playable game where the sound doesn't cut out, and the cursor lines up where it's supposed to. Also when you move the mouse to the edge of your monitor, in-game scrolling behaves as it would when fullscreened.

Known issue:
Weird noises at the end of each characters monologue during cut-scenes.
