Additional Comments

These results are for the build from GOG.com which reports itself as 1.02. It includes a high-res option which worked well enough for me using the default, Opengl drivers.

I had trouble initially because I ran Wine command from outside the Anachronox program folder. After running from there it worked as expected. (I also reinstalled to "C:\Anachronox" just in case special path characters were a problem. And I also changed winecfg to "Windows 98".)

HOWTO

HOWTO
To play this 3DFX version of this game, I recommend installing the glide wrapper available here: http://www.zeckensack.de/glide/

glide mode
by Thomas J. Moore on Monday February 4th 2013, 1:53
Just a note regarding glide: the gog.com version of anox I have appears to require something that none of the glide wrappers except nglide provide. All others I have tried (including the one recommended in the HOWTO) fail with a message indicating that glide2x.dll does not support multitexturing. I assume it's basing this either on the version number or some status flag which the others fail to set.

Of course nglide has a few problems as well, but at least it runs. With nglide, text has random garbage bordering every word. It also starts reusing textures inappropriately after a while (e.g. a wall will have an exit sign's texture), which can only be fixed by completely restarting. I have no Windows machine to test whether this behavior is true on Windows as well.

Why use glide at all, you ask? OpenGL mode does not work for me (laptop RS880M); it looks perfect most of the time (even at the fountain, where others report slowdown), but I get random GPU stalls (kernel: radeon 0000:01:05.0: GPU lockup CP stall for more than 10000msec). 3-5 seconds later the card is reset and continues normally (unless it decides to stall again a few frames later). I say random, but I'm sure there is some specific reason that I can't figure out. This is with recent mesa/kernel r600 drivers for the last 6 months or so at least (commerical driver does not support anything below r700 any more, so I can't compare). Since the demo does not work at all (crashes at startup), and this app is not platinum, and I have no idea how to trace this reasonably, I can't easily report a bug. Except for the texture issues, glide mode looks about as good as OpenGL mode, anyway, but without the frequent freezes.
