1.3.19 and 1.3.20
by smoke.tetsu on Saturday May 14th 2011, 4:14
Mouse support is fixed in 1.3.19 but borked again in 1.3.20 making it even worse than in pre-.19. The mouse works fine in .19 but in .20 is way too sensitive so pushing any axis causes you to go to the extreme.
But in either case many of the vertices in the HUD weapon\arms are now translucent like glass.
mouse just broke on 1.3.15

audio hang
by tom v on Thursday January 6th 2011, 10:33
if fear is hanging try setting hardware audio to "emulated" in winecfg or disabling hardware audio in Config.exe. I'm not sure if this is the same issue as mentioned in the test result, but it fixed a hang on the main menu I had with wine 1.3.10. I installed fear to this wineprefix ages ago and haven't run it in months so this fix may not be necessary for clean installs.
CD-Key entry workarounds
by William J May on Sunday November 22nd 2009, 16:46
Can we start a howto section please? Suggestions for the 'registry change' or 'winetricks->corefonts' both appear to resolve the issue. I had this problem and 'corefonts' worked for me.
Textures
by Łukasz on Saturday August 22nd 2009, 14:15
I am suffering from some textures issues in source-based games and F.E.A.R.
At the beginning everything looks fine. But after some time of playing those games textures are becoming... hmm.. broken. They have various colours, checked yellow-black guns for example, pink walls. I couldn't find, that anybody else have this problem.
Textures are breaking when game is loading new area or saving etc. Helps reloading textures (chainging textures detail from low to medium or medium to high or whatever).
There is no additional output in console.
I can attach some screenshots.
Does anybody can help me with this?

Hey guys, I have installed F.E.A.R., as well as the 1.08 patch/update. I put d3dx9_36 and dinput8 inside system32 folder and the game's main folder and set them to native on Wine Configuration. The game still fails to run though. I also installed WMFADist.exe and added HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D\OffscreenRenderingMode
to "fbo.
I have wine 1.1.25 unpatched.
Here's the debug info:

CD KEY problem
by Berillions on Tuesday June 16th 2009, 14:29
Hello all,
I have a problem when i want to insert the cd-key during the installation.
In fact, there is no place for the four caracters. Exemple, when i want to insert "DAW5", I can insert only "DAW" and in conclusion, i can't install the game...
Works when windowed
by Toni on Sunday March 15th 2009, 1:49
I did on wine version 1.1.16
1. Allowed the game to install DirectX9
2. Game was allready patched to 1.08 (BestSeller Series)
3. Installed WMFADist.exe
4. Changed
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D\OffscreenRenderingMode
to "fbo" to get better fps and Pixel Doubling/Soft Shadows working
Game works almost perfectly when I'm on windowed mode. Cutscenes and intro movie included (I disabled them but the game shows them anyway). If I go to full screen mode game starts having missing graphics and crashing randomly. Especially on cutscenes.
regestry Perfomance option
by Kim on Wednesday November 26th 2008, 13:30
Hi,
i got wine 1.0.1 and in my regestry there is neither currentuser/softwarte/wine/direct3d key nor any subkeys (of course). The game is really at a low framerate. What can i do?
Video Card Not Supported
by Jeremy on Monday November 24th 2008, 16:48
I use to play FEAR COMBAT a lot using Windows XP on this same PC. I've recently switched OS's from XP to Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10. When I try to run FEAR under Wine, I get the error "The video card in this computer is not supported. Refer to the readme.txt file for more information."
The strange thing is that I am using the exact same video card that I was using on Windows XP, GeForce 3 Ti200.
In the readme file it has the following NVIDIA cards listed as supported:
Slow saving?
by Mike on Saturday November 15th 2008, 19:05
I managed to stabilize FEAR on my system by disabling GLSL in the registry and enabling DX8 shaders in the game. Contrary to the HOWTO, ALSA is all I'm able to use for sound (my PCM mixer is continuously muted when using OSS). I'm also not sure it's enough to just place the d3dx9_36.dll in windows/system32, I added a native override for it in winecfg. So far, performance is more than acceptable on medium settings @ 1920 with a GTX260 and wine-1.1.8.
Anyway, now that things are running pretty well, I've noticed that saves (both quick and regular) are taking several seconds to complete. As a frequent saver, trying to maximize health and ammo in fights, this is particularly annoying. Googling for slow fear saves doesn't return anything useful or even on topic. Anything I can do?
using wine 1.1.7 from apt with no patches
fear patched to 1.08
d3dx9_36 installed
game starts up fine using out of box default.archcfg. Crashes when I try to start new game. Graphics test works in setup menu. Tried both Alsa and OSS sound, both have sound in the menu but still crash. Tried downloading no_mp3.Arch00 and changing default.archfg and then fear will not start. Dies with:
game doesn't start
by Stefan on Monday August 11th 2008, 6:48
Hi, I'm using wine-1.1.2, I installed fear (US 5cd version), downloaded the dinput and d3d..9..-dlls as mentioned in the howto. Then I applied the patch and al that went smoothly.
But when I start FEAR.exe, nothing happens. And I mean nothing, wine terminates right away.
Illustration:
$ wine FEAR.exe
$
No messages, no anything and it terminates _right_away_. Doesn't even take 2seconds to show me the prompt again.
Does anyone know anything about that issue? :>
FEAR won't run.
by RedM on Saturday June 21st 2008, 9:18
I'm using the BestSeller series DVD version of FEAR.
Wine is version 1.0
I can get it to install etc etc but I have no menu option to run the game. In the Wine menu I only have 'shortcut to user directory' and 'uninstall FEAR'.
If I go to the FEAR folder and click FEAR.exe nothing happens. If I click on the FEAR config.exe it runs but when I click on the Launch FEAR button nothing happens.
Q: Where and how do I apply this "patch"? I downloaded Wine from Suse's software management (0.9.44) so if someone could please provide instructions for a noob how to apply this i would appreciate it!
---------------------------------------------
3. Put native dinput8.dll and d3dx9_36.dll to your game or system32 folder. Run winecfg and change dinput8 to native
Q: Do what now?
---------------------------------------------
Please, I would really appreciate it if someone could reply, I have had FEAR for about 2 days (got it for 2.99, bargain!) but can't play it :(
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!

FEAR crashes after intro vids
by Ian on Friday May 16th 2008, 8:15
I've just installed FEAR with the 1.08 update, configured directx properley (as far as i can tell) managed to install everything OK, but when I run FEAR.exe it crashes out after the "made for nvidia" video. Here's the resulting output from wine:
Nice but low FPS
by Hyzy on Wednesday April 16th 2008, 15:48
Excellent job. I just added patch and all dll's. At last game is playable, but... :( If anyone can find a solution for low FPS (13-33) while in Windows it is 60-80.
I checked FEAR and FEAR Combat - the same situation. Configuration is set to minimum and I tested it in multiplayer mode.
And this is paste from console:
Sound related crashing
by rwolf on Monday April 7th 2008, 7:38
During testing of the game using cedega, it was discovered that various MP3 files stored in the .Arch00 files would cause crashing. Some of these MP3 files were repeating background noises. As a band-aid patch to the problem, I created a mod .Arch00 file which loads a silent MP3 over the problem files in memory when the levels are loaded. I don't think I managed to get all of the problematic files, but enough of them that you could play through without having to worry about turning sounds off.
Keyboard
by yevlum on Wednesday March 19th 2008, 9:22
For some reason fear only detects the escape, the enter, f5 and f6 keys.
This makes the game unplayable for me otherwise the single player works with the patch. Any idea what is wrong?

Size of font too big to enter CD key - Fix
by rwolf on Sunday November 18th 2007, 7:12
While installing the game, I was unable to enter a couple parts of the CDkey because it was apparently programmed to only allow typed characters to appear in the text box if they could visually fit within the space allotted.
In order to get past this, I had to manually change the font size by following the directions at the following link.
I did get past the cd key part with no troubles, infact the game installed successfully. My problem now is when I attempt to run the game it crashes after the intro movies. I look at the terminal to find this:
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000000 at address 0x483de4 (thread 0019), starting debugger...
WineDbg starting on pid 0x18
Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x00000000 in 32-bit code (0x00483de4).
Plus a whole bunch of debugging information. Guess that not a lot can be done since getting past the cd key part fails for most people. Just thought I would let you know it is possible to get the game to install.
Gotten past cdkey entry
by Evan Goers on Saturday July 15th 2006, 22:27
I have managed to get past the cdkey entry, by simply typing it in. I use the latest 0.9.17(.deb).
During installation, the installer will ask you to insert the next disc. However, umounting the disc to eject it will result in an error(in use). How to get around this if you don't have multiple drives, I don't know(I'm not as knowledgeable about Linux as most people on here).
