Homeworld's epic tale
begins in the far reaches of the universe. You were the benign lords of
a peaceful society located in the center of a lush spiral galaxy. For
as long as anyone could remember, no one challenged your peaceful
existence. But then came the conquerors, invading with the sole purpose
of overtaking your world. Billions died, and the survivors were
relocated to a cold, lifeless planet on the edge of the galaxy.
Hundreds of years later, all knowledge of your previous existence has
been lost. Only vague myths remain, until the discovery of an ancient
tablet buried within the ruins of a half-destroyed craft in the
great-banded desert. This Guidestone reawakened the knowledge of your
ancestry, and set your race on the path home - coordinates leading
straight into the heart of the galaxy. Sixty years ago, construction
began on the giant Mothership that will carry millions of your people
into deep space. Construction is now complete. Your journey to the
Homeworld begins here...
Old test results
The test results you have selected are very old and may not represent the current state of Wine.
Selected Test Results (selected in 'Test Results' table below)
What works
Homeworld installer (flawlessly)
Homeworld v1.05 executable with or without the no-CD Patch.
One needs to take special measures to get it to work though. As discussed in the posts below, Homeworld (or WINE) has a few problems that need workarounds. After you get Homeworld running, you will need to change your in-game display settings to use OpenGL. The game may look horrible until you do so.
Problem:
Homeworld won't launch.
Workaround:
Disable all audio support in winecfg by unchecking (commenting out) audio drivers (ALSA, OSS, etc.)
cd into the /home/{username}/.wine/drive_c/Sierra/Homeworld/directory
run "wine homeworld.exe"
Problem:
I want audio but the Audio Drivers prohibt Homeworld from Starting.
Workaround:
Start winecfg, choose audio tab.
Use the ALSA Driver with:
DirectSound Hardware Acceleration: Emulation
Driver Emulation: Checked
Run Homeworld as listed above but with the /dsoundCoop option:
wine homeworld.exe /dsoundCoop
It may be necessary for you to play some audio before re-launching Homeworld.
Problem:
Cannot re-launch Homeworld or use audio device after Homeworld exits
Workaround:
If your system uses PulseAudio, use the pulseaudio wrapper by running
/usr/bin/padsp wine homeworld.exe /dsoundCoop
Problem:
I have a widescreen montior and Homeworld looks ugly when it runs.
Workaround:
Run Homeworld as listed above but use the /window option to display the game in a window:
wine homeworld.exe /window
Note, the ALT key may now drag the window. If you use the ALT key to look at ships, drag a box around the ships first and then press ALT and release the mouse button.
You can, of course, combine all of these options into one command. I was unable to get Homeworl to start unless I called it either by command line or by a shell script. I found the script option to be easier on my Ubuntu laptop:
### Contents of Homeworld.sh ###
#/bin/sh
cd /home/{username}/.wine/drive_c/Sierra/Homeworld/
/usr/bin/padsp /usr/bin/wine homeworld.exe /window /dsoundCoop
What does not
Audio does not work unless the workarounds above are applied.
16:9 aspect ratio monitors. If you have a widescreen monitor, you may need to run Homeworld inside of a window using the /window argument. In /window mode pressing the ALT key will drag the window around the screen. See the workaround listed above.
