Description
While the previous games centered around the Valley of Mines and Khorinis, Gothic 3 moves away from those locations to a newer, larger environment. This story involves the continent of Myrtana, which is in the midst of war. Orcs have enslaved the human kingdom with only a few free humans living in the nearly uninhabitable icy northlands of Nordmar, the southern desert of Varrant, and the mountainous forests of the Middle Realm. Players can choose to join the rebellion and stay true to the deposed human king, serve the Orcish usurpers in their quest to topple the last remaining human stronghold, or choose a path that serves their own ends. Every decision made has an impact on the game world, and tips the in-game balance of power. Given the non-linear storyline, every game is theoretically unique, with the player ultimately deciding the fate of humankind. A number of NPCs accompany the player throughout the game.

What works
- Installation - Patching the game - Starting the game Dynamic shadows works (for character and some objects). Speedtree objects are rendered correctly (without shadows). Mouse works (with tweaking) Keyboard works (after applying community patch, not before). Physics works.

What does not
Still there is black sky. Very slow on AMD Gpus (got ~5 fps, or less) Distant view doesn't work (it is black right after the clip plane where high details should end and low details should start (so even sky is cut out - black sky)), with orm=fbo. Lightmaps and shadows from SpeedTree objects (there are just glitches instead of them).

What was not tested
Longer (> 5 minutes) gameplay (as the game is so slow, that it is actually unplayable).

Additional Comments

After installation from original CD, if not community patched, you have to use nocd patch on some dlls and exe (don't know why, it just doesn't see any CD in drive - it will give error "err:seh:raise_exception Exception frame is not in stack limits => unable to dispatch exception.")

The game has been a bit too slow on my testing machine - notebook (Core i3, 3 GiB RAM, Mob. Radeon HD 5470). I'm also gonna test it at the weekend on my desktop, where there is better CPU, GPU and more RAM.

I got most fps while using Shader model 3.0, other shader models were even more glitchy and fps were even less.

The black sky glitch is as I mentioned still present (but also distant land and objects have also black glitch).

HOWTO

Installation:

- install the game

- patch the game with your favorite patch (version 1.75.14 recommended)

- use native d3dx9_40.dll (native d3dx9_36.dll seems to work fine, too)

Tuning options:

- you may set "Timer.ThreadSafe=false" in "Ini/ge3.ini" if the game has low frames

- you may enable "Automatically capture the mouse in full-screen windows" in winecfg's graphics tab if you are using "Emulate virtual desktop", otherwise the mouse will leave the window

Wine version:

- wine-1.5.11

System:

- tested with GeForce GTX 570/PCI/SSE2 and proprietary nvidia drivers (4.1.0 NVIDIA 280.11)

- tested with radeon HD 4350 and open source drivers (2.1 Mesa 8.0.3, Gallium 0.4 on AMD RV710)

Can anyone help me with this? Is there something I could change in my settings?

1.3.28 Only
by an anonymous user on Saturday September 17th 2011, 4:48
Since I've installed the 1.3.28 version of Wine, the mouse cursor doesn't work fine anymore.
I can move the mouse in any direction as soon as the mouse cursor doesn't hit in the "background" the desktop borders.. ..after that i can't get the mouse move in one or more directions. This is very annoying since I have to use the keyboard to turn left or right.

Does any of you know any solution, or hint? I couldn't find a good set of words to find a solution on google. :-)

Sky: is there a way to get the sky "blue" instead of the "dark" one i have? :)
