Selected Test Results (selected in 'Test Results' table below)

What works
nearly all

What does not
Tutorial and Help partly, Tutorial Lessons will crash, same thing happens with Help/Tutoria Lessons. Tooltiptext needs comctl32.dll to work.

What was not tested
Nothing I know about

Additional Comments

WTReader from the same CD runs like wtlib06. The fonts are now working in Ubuntu 7.04 but in 6.10 they are shown in a funny way!

How to: quick guide on Watchtower Library installation
  1. Get the actual version of wine (Watchtower Library 2010 requires wine 1.3.11 or greater. Older Watchtower Library versions require 1.1.22 or greater, 1.2 or greater is recommended. Most modern linux distributions already have it in their repositories, so you just have to install "wine" package)
  2. Insert WTLib disc and run Setup.exe. If it won't work, do this:
    wine /cdrom/Setup.exe
  3. Installer would create working shortcuts on your desktop (on some systems in home folder), and in Applications > Wine menu. Use these to run Watchtower Library. You may delete *.lnk files (if there are any), since these are of no use.

Common problems

Tooltip shadows stay after tooltips disappeared

This issue appears on some video cards with Compiz enabled. The workaround is in disabling fade animation for wine tooltips. To do this:

  1. install Compiz configuration tool. In most distributions it is in package named compizconfig-settings-manager.
  2. After you install it, run it (executable file named ccsm).
  3. Then go to Animations, open Close animations tab and double-click line that starts with Fade.
  4. Click plus sign in pop-up window,
  5. In new window select Window Class as Type, enter Wine as Value, select And as Relation and check Invert.
  6. Click Add button and you're done.

Watchtower Library 2010 does not work in wine 1.3.27 and greater

While this bug is not fixed you can fix it yourself. You need to remove a manifest for built-in version of MS runtime library. You can do this by executing the following code in terminal:

rm ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/winsxs/manifests/*.vc90.*_deadbeef.manifest

Watchtower Library 2010 does not work in wine prior to 1.3.11

You need wine 1.3.11 or greater in order to run Watchtower Library 2010.

OR, install the iphlpapi fix, DEB package (debian, ubuntu, mint etc) - RPM package (redhat, fedora, centos etc). You can then setup and run wtlib without upgrading wine to 1.3.11+.

Black blocks in interface and text on Intel video cards

If you use Intel graphics and experience blacked out text and interface items in Watchtower Library, (that is, experience bug 24998), you can fix it with following steps:

  1. Run wine regedit
  2. Open HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/X11 Driver. Create it if it does not exist
  3. Create new String value (using context menu on right part of interface) named ClientSideWithRender and set its value to N
  4. Close (restart) all wine applications

Permissions problem with Ubuntu Lucid Lynx (10.04)

In Ubuntu Lucid Lynx (10.04) and derivative distributions you may face problem where Setup.exe on the CD is not executable, and you can't set it executable, since CD is read-only. There are two possible solutions:

  1. Use wine /cdrom/Setup.exe command mentioned above, or
  2. Copy all files from CD to your hard drive, mark Setup.exe as executable (right-click the file → Properties → Permissions) and then execute Setup.exe from there.

Broken fonts

If you see squares instead of text in Watchtower Library on the first run, go to settings (press f2) and change font settings, choosing any font you like. If you see broken characters in interface, you may need to install MS truetype core fonts for web package. To do this

  • Install msttcorefonts package using your packaging system. If it fails:
  • Install it using winetricks (this will affect your wine installation only, fonts won't be available for non-wine applications):
    winetricks corefonts

Problems with XFCE, LXDE, Enlightment and others

XFCE and some other DE ignore path parameter for desktop and menu launchers. As result, Watchtower Library prior to 2011 does not start when you click these. The simple solution is to change "Command" parameter in launcher to

wine start wtlibrary.exe

Watchtower Library for Mac OSX 10.7.3 "Lion"

There are some initial issues with using the Watchtower Library in Mac. The first issue is

Installing WINE

Simple solution: watchtowerlibraryformac.info

Or, you could follow the guide in the WINE wiki about installing Macports (MacOSX Installation). It is recommended that once you have installed MacPorts you need to configure it (How to install & configure Macports)

Do not install WINE but rather install wine-devel sudo ports install wine-devel for the latest WINE version.

You should also update X11, the default version is 2.3.2 which doesn't display all of the images in the Watchtower Library. The website XQuartz MacOS Forge contains the latest XQuartz (2.6.2). Once XQuartz has been updated you can run the Watchtower Library out-of-the-box with no issues.

To set up an application to run the Watchtower Library from the dock, go to Applications -> Utilities -> AppleScript Editor

Once in the editor copy & paste the following script:

tell application "Terminal"
    do script "/opt/local/bin/wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\\ Files/Watchtower/Watchtower\\ Library\\ 2010/E/WTLibrary.exe"
end tell

Click on run to make sure it works and then click on compile if successful and then save the script as an application filetype (Leave startup screen unchecked). Once saved as an application drag it into the dock.

Missing DLL File Errors

WINE in Mac doesn't seem to look for the DLL files in the same way it normally does. The DLL files it is referring to (Such as uresearch21u.dll) are located in the "MEPS Platform 2.3" folder in the Watchtower directory. However WINE searches for them in the /drive_c/windows/system32 directory. Just copy and paste the contents of the "MEPS Platform 2.3" folder to the "system32" folder to resolve the issue.

Broken "Fetch from clipboard" function

If you copy multiline-text and a reference happens to be divided between two lines, the results can be a bit odd. This seems to be by design; wtlib seems to read the clipboard contents line by line. For example, if an article reads:

hechos recientes son más que los de antes" (Rev. 2:
19, 20).

Then wtlib will extract Revelation chapter 2, the entire chapter. This is due to wtlib reading just one line at a time. Now, in linux you can install xclip and run this command after having copied, say for example an entire article:

xclip -o | tr "\n" " " | xclip -selection clipboard -i

The command translates \newlines to spaces. If you do that before going Edit - Fetch from clipboard in wtlib, the correct references are extracted :D (Just Rev. 2:19, 20 in the example above).

You could even stick the command in a script and launch that from a button on your panel, or something.

I don't know how to do this in windows, but could be AutoIt would be a start...

What should I include when I submit a new test result?

Whether the install process went fine, or if not, what went wrong

Whether the program starts without any tweaks/modifications, or if not, what needs fixing/tweaking.

If the program runs, does the following work, or if not, what has to be done to fix/tweak it?

  • Search and navigation through the library
  • Tooltips (rest the mouse over a link)
  • Special characters like in Hebrew, and the */M signs in the Bible
  • Toolbar buttons just above the publications tree on the left, do they look good/ do they work?
  • Print (you obviously need to have a working printer setup in Linux first, wine will pick up CUPS printers at least. You can add cups-PDF printer if you have no physical printer)
  • Maps/graphics
  • Word list box
  • Add Favourites
  • Open Favourites
  • Settings
  • pronunciation (if you have a sound card and language version you are testing have this feature)
  • Synchronisation (if you have multiple languages installed)

did I forget something? just edit this note.

WARNING

Before asking for help,

  • Please make sure that you have followed the HOWTO instructions first (see above).
  • Also, make sure that your wine version is 1.1.22 or greater. In order to find out your wine version, open terminal and execute the following: wine --version. If your wine version is lower than 1.1.22, please, refer HOWTO for instructions on how to update wine.
  • If Watchtower Library code't work and you have updated your wine installation, you might need to remove .wine directory from home directory and re-install Watchtower Library in order to make it work.
If you are still here, feel free to ask for help, but when doing so, please, provide the following information:
  1. Your linux distribution and its version (For example: Ubuntu 9.10 or Ubuntu Karmic. If you don't know what version you're running, try lsb_release -a in a terminal)
  2. Your wine version (wine --version in a terminal)
  3. Which language version of Watchtower Library you are trying to install
  4. What does not work, and what have you done in order to fix it
  5. Any error messages you get

Installing on top of wtlib 2005

seems not to work that well. It seems to confuse 2005 with 2006 data or something, and the program shows the splash screen then says "encountered an error; can't continue". The splash image shows version 2005 even if it is the 2006, and the program dir contains a Splash.bmp looking like 2006. The 2005 splash shows even if I DID delete the entire ~/.wine before installing.

Also, oddly enough, the title bar says "Watchtower library 2005" even if it's 2006. I haven't tried it in windows, so I don't know if this is a bug in wtlib or just something with my local setup.

Use 2006 library with 2007 information

If you don't like Watchtower Reader but prefer 2006 Library all you have to do is install 2006 Library as normal then using wine get to the c: drive /program files/watchtower/watchtower 2006/e(if english is spoken word)/rs_data.

Then when you have got there put 2007 Reader in drive and navigate to same place but find rs_data_e. Change over old (rs_data) to new (rs_data_e) and it will then have loaded 2007 information. All this if english is your spoken word.

wtreader + ArchLinux
by Massimo on Sunday February 3rd 2008, 5:32
Dear all,

is there any success installing wtreader in any ArchLinux distro?

Well, here my experience. I have successfully installed wine-0.9.53 from the stable repository, the $HOME/.wine exists.
The installer seems to work properly (no errors in the pop-up window) and the icon is shown on the Desktop.

Replacing the launcher with the properly shell environment variables, now it looks like the following (this is for the italian version):

WINEDLLOVERRIDES=comctl32=n,b wine /home/massimo/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Watchtower/Watchtower\ Reader/I/wtreader.exe

I also replaced the "comctl32.dll" library from the XP ones.

Anyway it doesn't work because of the errors:

Puppy Linux 2.16 & Wine 0.9.17 OK
by Paul Kowalski on Friday December 7th 2007, 9:58
This is a small success story.
While Puppy Linux v3.01 now operates with wine 0.9.49 I have not been able to test it as I must upgrade a few other packages simultaneously due to the new Kernel and modified library architecture.
I have not had success with Puppy 2.16 under wine 0.9.28
The most stable wine in the Puppy 2 series is 0.9.17
This successfully installed WTLib-English in run from CD mode without DLL overrides and the only trick being to copy or relative symbolic link everything under "MEPS Common" to the folder where WTLIB.EXE is found
Sounds work fine
Copy and Paste to Linux apps is also okay
Hover text does not work properly.

For Information on Installing Wine in Puppy Linux see the discussion forum www.murga-linux.com/puppy/
Puppy Linux is a light-weight (usually under 90MB) excellent beginners Linux Distro that can operate from a CD or flash drive as well as Hard Drive.

Minor cosmetic bugs
by rdchin on Monday December 3rd 2007, 15:16
OS: Ubuntu 7.10

Minor bug: The balloon windows do not work (when you hover the cursor over a marginal reference or footnote) also the symbol "M" for marginal reference or "*" for cross-reference both show up as a tiny wingding-like graphic of the "Del Char" keycap.

I don't mind, I can overlook this sin, but MS Windows users may be annoyed especially at the "Del Char" keycap graphic appearing at each marginal reference.

Is there any way to fix this? I already tried copying the Windows\Font folder from the Congregation's licensed MS Windows XP Home to the ~/.wine/drive_c/windows subfolder but it didn't solve the problem.

P.S. The MS Windows XP home was getting hosed so much even though the PC is not on-line that the printer stopped working and reinstalling the printer driver did not help. Whereas Ubuntu seemed to work reliably so I am trying to change it from a dual boot PC to an Ubuntu PC.

Multiple users for Kingdom Hall's PC
by rdchin on Monday December 3rd 2007, 15:07
OS: Ubuntu 7.10
wine: 0.946 from Ubuntu repository
WTLib: 2006

Issue: I am trying to install the WTLib for each user to use on the Kingdom Hall's PC. What is the best way to do this?

Action Taken:
1. Configured wine as Windows XP using the GUI. This action created the folders:
~/.wine/dosdevices drive_c system.reg userdef.reg user.reg

2. I installed the Watchtower Library 2006 from CD as a hard disk drive install under my own user account.

3. Then I copied the /home/rchin/.wine/drive_c/windows (except the /windows/profiles folder to the 2nd user.

4. I copied the ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Common Files, Install Shield Installation Information, and Watchtower directories to the 2nd user.

5. I chown and chgrp the copied folders to the user name of the 2nd user.

6. When trying to run wine it says that it can't find the dlls etc. even though they have been copied. It seems I have a configuration file to edit? Help! Has anyone done this before for their congregation?

Multi installation
by Ay on Wednesday September 5th 2007, 3:24
"Also, oddly enough, the title bar says "Watchtower library 2005" even if it's 2006. I haven't tried it in windows, so I don't know if this is a bug in wtlib or just something with my local setup."

Hello,

There is a way to setup multi installations of WTL. If you launch WTL without arguments, it will run the first installed one.

You have to indicate a path to some file. I'm sorry I cannot say what path it is (I'm at the office), but you can found it by browsing key entry in the registry (search wtlib).

Maybe I will go back here later to indicate what file this is.

WT Library 2006 Error 0003 569
by Jacquie on Sunday September 2nd 2007, 23:18
Help! I installed 2006, and to clean up my hard drive I tried to uninstall (via programs uninstall) 2005, and an old version 1999. 2005 would not uninstall and now I can't get 2006 to work. I get the error message 0003 569 and says "error in the registry". Anyone ever seen this before?

if you check the shortcut that the installer adds (My system (kde on FreeBSD7-C) converts this to a KDE shortcut for me - Nice!), you will see that the command line includes an argument for a configure file. If I omit this argument, the window titles do show '2005'.
This seems to be a cosmetic issue, becuase it seems to run correctly anyway.

Bugs in spanish on 6.10
by Arno Teigseth on Wednesday April 25th 2007, 16:32
Hi all.

I got problems _running_ wtreader and wtlib 2006 spanish on 0.9.35 on 6.06. The installer is platinum. The strange thing is, Wtread/wtlib 2006 Norwegian and English both run fine on 6.06/0.9.35...

It works well on 7.04 feisty, but it's simply too much work upgrading right now...

The program stops with a windows error message "encountered a problem and will exit now" (in spanish)

anyone else got the same behaviour?

Reader crashes on launch
by sp200606 on Wednesday April 4th 2007, 18:11
Hi,
No matter what I do, WTReader won't launch with comctl32.dll override. I'm using the native XP Pro sp2 - French.
I have reinstalled from scratch a few times (rm -rf ~/.wine).
Wine version: wine-0.9.33
Ubuntu: 2.6.20-13-generic

Without the override, WTR works fine - but no tooltips; and I guess you all know how valuable these are!

Thanks for any suggestion.

Printing selections not active
by Kaz Nishi on Tuesday April 3rd 2007, 12:25
Issue:
How do I activate/enable printing functions directly from WTL2006? It is more of a nuisance, since I can cut and paste from "Sent Items Preview".

My WTL2006 installation:
I installed WTL2006 in wine 9.34 on openSUSE 10.2. I used the comctl32 dll override in winecfg, copied from my winXP. I also copied all my winXP fonts into the wine fonts dir, plus the special fonts for the marginal references. Everything seems to work well except the printing ability.

I am using CUPS for printing, which works for Linux. My printer is connected via the local network. Printing capabilities and my printer show in wine notepad. What am I missing?

2006
by Stewart on Thursday March 29th 2007, 14:10
experience the same odd recall to 2005 with an error message. However the Reader works just fine on the same computer. Also found it necessary to force remove an earlier version of 2005. Running Win XP

wtlib 2006 new behaviour
by teg on Friday March 16th 2007, 12:36
For the crash at startup with the splash screen that says "encountered an error; can't continue", you have to copy the end part of the desktop icon command, that is (for an English version) :

/Config "c:\Program Files\Watchtower\Watchtower Library 2006\e\wtlconfig.mepsxml"

and add it at the end of the line that start wtlib.

So with a dll override, you script might look like :

cd ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Watchtower/MEPSCommon

WINEDLLOVERRIDES=comctl32=n,b wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Watchtower/Watchtower\ Library\ 2006/e/wtlib.exe /Config "c:\Program Files\Watchtower\Watchtower Library 2006\e\wtlconfig.mepsxml"

New features with wtlib 2006 and Ubuntu 7.04
by Nils-Eric Wilkman on Friday February 16th 2007, 10:18
In Program menu/Systemtools/ there is now an entry for Wine Software Uninstaller. Program menu/Games/ Winemine game. Program menu/Wine/Programs/Watchtower Reader/Watchtower Reader - Language. Program menu/Accessories/ Wine File, Wine Help Browser and Wine Notepad. System menu/Control Center, (Other) Wine RegEdit and Wine Configuration. All these menu items works well, so configuration of Wine from Ubuntu can be made from Control Center and start WTReader from the Program menu, so there is something new. An other interesting thing is the use of an freeware intaller for WTReader, and this results in only a few error messages.

Nils-Eric

Installing over 2005
by Eric Chapman on Thursday February 8th 2007, 14:46
Hello,
The issue of installing over WT Library 2005 is a windows registry issue. First uninstall all versions of WT Library. Then the solution is to go into your registry (your wine windows registry) delete all the entries under 2005 watchtower. They are in more than one place so poke around a bit. Once you've deleted them. Try the install once more. It will work,
Thanks,
Eric

Anyone wants to team up for bugfixing?
by Michael Zachariassen Krog on Tuesday January 23rd 2007, 3:40
I was wondering if anyone here wants to team up to bugfix the last things in wine not working in WT Library?

Im a system developer, but develops mostly in Java, C# and Python. I have som C/C++ experience, but havent used it since 1999. Maybe others are in the same situation and teaming up our efforts could perhaps get the bugfixing on the move.

Please post here if interested.

Best Regards
Michael Krog

Hi!

Both library and reader installs fine and my mother language Finnish version starts without problems - library but english version didn't.

English version say me like that -> Wathtower Library has experienced a problem and cannot continue.

If someone of you can find out what I must to do that I can start english version like finnish version then I say you BIG thank.

I must to say that you all are do wonderfully work with that we all Linux users can enjoy Library and now Reader also.
