Opening an image, (un)zooming, saving the image, going to the next/previous image of the directory, going into the preferences; even the Paint plugin does work!
Note that some part of the interface have an ugly font in IrfanView 4.32 (in 4.28 it is the normal standard font).

needs MFC42.dll... for install only (even uninstall does not need it!)
In order to install IrfanView 4.0 or newer versions you must have MFC42.DLL library which can be downloaded here or installed with winetricks.

Irfanview 4.35 works well with wine 1.4.1 & Ubuntu 12.10

I wanted to install Irfanview using wine, but my first try didn't work.
I copied the file "mfc42.dll" from a Windows system under the directory "c:\windows\system32", put it on an USB key and copied it on the hidden Ubuntu directory "/home/bg/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32" ("bg" is my identifier).
Then there was no problem to install 'Irfanview', version 4.35.
I use Ubuntu 12.10 with Wine 1.4.1
I use also 'Total Commander', a very good file manager, which is a reference, and is similar to 'gnome commander', 'double commander', krusader', 'midnight commander', and works fine with Wine. It can use 'Irfanview' as a viewer and is very practical to install other Windows applications in Ubuntu.

I am posting this as a thank you, and hoping it may serve as a guide for other Wine newbies like myself.
I just installed Wine (1.4.1) and Winebottler on Snow Leopard. While the install went smoothly, I got an error in Winebottler when I tried to install the predefined prefix for IrfanView.
However I was able to easily fix the problem. I simply manually created the new folder "Wine" in:
"Users//Library/Application Support/"
Then rebooted, launched WineBottler and tried again. Voila! IrfanView v4.3.2 now runs on my iMac. Yippee!!!! :)
This little gem, (even at a walloping 68MB as a bottled app) is a web designers dream come true, and though certainly not a replacement for a full fledged editing program like PS or Gimp, it is FAST and SMART!
It loads quickly, remembers the last used settings for most of the editing functions and the file open and "save as" directories, and has shortcut keys for nearly every function. It is the first tool I reach for when scaling, cropping, and color correcting photos for a web site. And it was the last tool tying me to Windows as a web design platform.
IMO, no native Mac graphics app in this class even comes close to competing with Irfanview for speed, stability, versatility, and ease of use.
Many, many thanks to both the Wine developers, and to Irfan Skiljan for making this all possible. I am overjoyed!
Irfanview 4.35

Works very well - I used wine 1.4.1 after trying 1.5.22 & 23 I got the same results, so I went for the stable version. best way to install is to use winetricks first to install mfc42 then use winetricks to install iview 4.35. If you install irfanview directly from winetricks gui it goes off about installing version 4.33. I use Kubuntu 12.10 on a 21 inch screen, so I always have to fiddle with font size, subpixel rendering, forcing dpi etc. running wineconfig for irfanview I force 210 dpi on the graphics part, then select ubuntu 10 bold in the desktop integration part of wineconfig in order to get a consistent look with my GTK and KDE settings there are 3 font sizes that are adjustable. I only use image plugins - they can be downloaded in a zip file. also languages and larger toolbars are available for downloading all plugins can be installed using wineconfig and a plugins exe file. I choose not to use sound plugins under irfan-wine. drag and drop works on the open irfanview, but not on the icon. I have been unable to right click to open image files or double click to open image files despite following some tutorials by fitzcarraldo and others - I am not clever with scripts, but I am sure it can be done I suspect it is a problem with 12.04 vs 12.10. It is a complete waste of time to try to use the iview feature to open with external editor like gimp, however, this too could probably be hacked. I am about a 5 on a scale of 10 when it comes to comprehending wine. If you have any questions I wil try to answer them
