Making mouse work better
Original Idea by Pac Shady, tested on 1.1.7
    • Set the mouse smoothness to maximum
    • Turn on virtual desktop
    • Run wine with WINEDEBUG=-all

    Additionally you can try:

    • Install dx9 (not necessary at the moment, but still you can try)
    • Set maximum possible for you screen resolution or set 640x480. Depends on perfomance.
That makes the mouse movement work in all directions quite good, but mouselook speed on X axis is different from Y axis. On wide and opened areas which really consume performance, this bug gives the biggest effect.

    Internet Multiplayer
Since Sierra shut down master-servers, you will be unable to get internet multiplayer working (connect to any internet server) without applying a community .rez-file patch. Patch is still in heavy development (available on LithFAQ), so you should not reply about failures with online gameplay.

    Slow when moving too much
by Amaroq on Monday August 3rd 2009, 22:31
For some reason, moving around in too many directions at once as aliens or marines (I haven't tried the others yet) slows me down a lot in single player mode. I haven't tried this in multiplayer because I want to make sure it works in single player before I game with my friend.

Moving around with one arrow key at a time works okay, but when I wall-walk or use two directional keys at once, my walking speed slows to a snail's pace or no pace at all. The camera motions like I am walking (the bobbing up and down), but otherwise I can't move. I can turn though.

Stopping for a second seems to reset this, but it goes bad again when I try to move too much at once again.

D3D Emulation mode error is back
by Daniel Seebald on Saturday March 28th 2009, 7:58
I've read about Bug 6565 bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6565 and I supposed it has been fixed a very long time ago. Unfortunatly it is back in wine 1.1.17 when I tried to run AVP2.

The game installs fine. Updating to 1.0.9.6 was not an issue although the sierra updater couldn't find the update servers (I manually updated with a patch from 'the patches scroll' then).

When trying to configure the display it only shows me the lithtech d3d renderer option, but no resolutions and no displays to choose from. After starting the game it throws the following error:

AVP2 Error: Couldn't set D3D Emulation mode. Shutting down AVP2...

This is what the console spits out:
    pastebin.com/f187327c0

Is this a new bug I'm encountering or am I missing something?

Sound issue is easy to work around
by Amaroq on Tuesday February 10th 2009, 11:34
A simple explanation of what I did after reading a fellow commenter's post about getting sound to work in-game.

Don't simply click the play button on the launcher menu. Point your mouse to it and hold it down. Let go after the 'click' sound is finished playing, then let go. Letting it finish playing its sound seems to allow the game to have sound.

The mouse is still jerky (I'm running 0.9.60) but I worked out that increasing the mouse smoothness in the options of AVP2 to max, it becomes almost playable. I seriously think I can play this game with those settings, albeit with a little motion sickness from all the screen jerking LOL. It might help to max out the mouse smoothness until WINE works out a fix.

    Game startup
by Csip on Tuesday January 1st 2008, 14:35
The installation and updating of the game work without a flaw, but at the startup of the game im constantly getting an error message saying that the AVP2.rez file was not found.
I can only access that launcher menu and select level of settings etc.

I already tried to somehow include that file using the command line parameter -rez AVP2.REZ within the Options menu.
I also tried to rename the file and experimented with different Upper/lowercase combinations but still no success.

    Installation
by Alexander Dorofeyev on Monday December 31st 2007, 6:50
Install should work fine in 0.9.52. At least it does on my machine. There was a regression in 0.9.51, but it's fixed now. Can somebody else who has this game please check if your experience matches description of "slow rendering" bug #10749 (see in bug links above). Am I the only one for whom it works terribly slow??? Post your experience to bugzilla.
