Additional Comments
After installing wine_gecko-0.9.0.cab and configuring wine to run as Win98, Quicken mostly works. One-steup update seems to work just fine, for institutions that normally work with that function.
Downloading transactions manually from some institutions doesn't work at all - large sections of the web page render as complete black. (Some institutions don't work at all with one-step update on any platform, so manual download capability is a necessity.)
To bypass registration, use the following trick from the Crossover site: "...click the Online menu and then (while holding left-Shift and left-Ctrl) click One Step Update. It will notify you that you will no longer be prompted for registration."
Screen redraw performance
To maximize the screen redraw performance use Windows 98. Doing so appears to speed up the rendering of Quicken screens.
1.1.17
I took a shot and upgraded to the latest beta release of wine and Quicken stopped working getting the Com Err message.
Using winetricks I made sure I had the corefonts, fontfix, ActiveX plugin, Power Point Viewer 2003 and this got it working once again.
The only trouble I am having are the tabs and text in the buttons - I can't read them and/or the label is not present. I'll have to play around with the fonts installed by winetricks.

Performance

I noticed that running Quicken under Windows 98 in WINE 1.1.12 using wine_gecko-0.9.0.cab speeds up the rendering of Quicken screens.
com error
by Daniel on Tuesday January 6th 2009, 20:24
Quicken now crashes at start up with the Com Error.
It happens when Quickens pops up a coupon to upgrade to the latest version of Quicken. The window itself never fully finishes loading with the error pops up. I simply get the window title, the check box with "Remind me later", the "Upgrade Now" button and "Close".
Quicken than returns error code 7222 - Unexpected Error. Quickens then generates a error report.
Maybe a WINE developer can take a look at it ... I have a feeling one of the DLLs is not returning what Quicken expects when it connects to the Intuit servers and hence the Com Error.
com error
by Daniel on Sunday January 4th 2009, 14:32
I finally got that com error I read in several posts today with Quicken. It happened when I attempted to lookup a ticker symbol for a security. Quicken asked to install a plugin it required in order to process my request. The error happens when IE thru WINE cannot access the Internet connection properly or perhaps when the site being requested returns an error. But the com error poped up and Quicken/WINE terminated.
Sorry I dont' have much more details as it happen rather unexpectedly and it was over just as quick.
I was able to restart Quicken without any issues and continue about my business.
Quicken Online Registration
by Daniel on Tuesday December 16th 2008, 15:49
The online registration fails.
After first installing Quicken and you are asked to Register Online the browser window that opens fails to connect to the Quicken services.
Message:
"... Connection to registration was unsuccessful. Quicken registration requires cookies and an internet connection. If there is an error registering Quicken, follow the steps below to correct the issue. ... "
When trying to use the "One Step Update" for your accounts the Quicken registration wizard will once again pop up saying you need to register in order to use this feature. However, if you cancel the wizard you can still do your update.
I read on a blog how to cancel the Quicken registration wizard some time back and will post the how to if I find out how ;o)
2007 Premier
by Daniel on Sunday December 14th 2008, 9:31
After many hours of reading and pondering how much of a headache getting Quicken to work with Ubuntu I took on the task of installing Quicken 2007 Premier onto my notebook running Ubuntu 8.10 running GNOME 2.24.1. This installation was the final step of moving away from MS.
The installation was smooth! Installed WINE 1.1.10 without any incidents.
Installed IE4Linux as this seemed to be a requirement for Quicken.
Then I downloaded the Quicken installation file from Intuit's web site and ran under WINE. Once the setup was complete Quicken asked to be updated.
Done!
Once Quicken started I canceled out of the initial "New User/Existing User" setup and restored my Quicken backup files.
All seems to be working well. I was prompted for my vault key. Each of my institutions is setup for online update which WINE/Quicken handled perfectly.
Tested the investment section and Quicken brought up it's browser to read news/updates on the security selected.
The only thing that may eventually start to bother me is the speed at which Quicken renders/refreshes when presented with graphical data. Other than this slow performance WINE/Quicken are functioning above expectations with no hassle on setup.
