Additional Comments
It seems to work perfectly fine when you enter the game, but after attempting to join a server, it basically just locks up at the MOTD, pretty much rendering this game unplayable. Quite impressive this game still has undocumented issues after 2 years.
Admin note: rating changed to conform to the rating definitions.
Symptom: While playing the game the FPS drops periodically
Workaround: This seems to be a scheduling issue. After launching the game use "renice" and change the priority of the process to higher. Ex:
$ps -a | grep hl.exe
4477 pts/0 00:00:03 hl.exe
$sudo renice -20 4477

This game behaves very, very oddly, just like on Vista. If it does not crash the first time you load an MOTD, it will have about 0% chance to crash before you restart the game - so if you wish to play this, let it stay open in the background, even alt+tabbed.
On another note, it crashes. A lot. The crash also happens on Vista from time to time, so there is no real fix for this it seems. I've never had it working properly except for yesterday with 1.1.41.
Any updates?

Does anybody have any updates regarding this game? I have tried it and still get stuck on motd-screen. Is there any updates about that working server (that now seems to be offline)?

It seems that my ~/.wine/config file doesn't exist. While I look for it, I found that joining the server named valor TS3 Gun Server at 216.246.49.22:27015 seems to work much better then other servers in the server list. You had mentioned that perhaps the reason TS crashes has to do with loading the motd from the server. If anyone else can join this server then it may prove useful to find out what makes this servers motd file different from other servers.

Fix for Ubuntu users
by Charles Waddell on Thursday August 9th 2007, 18:52
Hello I believe that I have found a solution to this problem. I am running Ubuntu 7.04 and was having the same problems when trying to connect to any game server. I solved this by entering the customize menu and under the voice tab I un-checked enable voice in this game. The game now runs fine and I can now connect to servers. It would be a good idea to investigate this problem more deeply to see what the real problem is but at present this is a quick fix so that someone can run the game.
This seems to be a problem with Ubuntu in general because there have been reports of people running this fine in versions of Dedian.
