Max Payne won't start
by Michael Barszcz on Wednesday August 17th 2011, 4:49
I bought original Max Payne but Wine have problems with detecting discs so I had to use a crack. When I try to start the game window that says "MaxPayne.exe encountered a serious problem and had to be closed".I tried the other crack but It was exactly the same.
Forced shutdown
by Sonny Boy on Sunday November 21st 2010, 8:32
It's strange, because the game runs flawlessly on Ubuntu 10.04 when all of a sudden it just forces the machine to shut down.
This happens every time I play the game after a couple of minutes, and it happens at random places in the game.
My distro is like stated above (Ubuntu 10.04), and the Wine version I'm using is 1.2.1.
This has never happened to me before in any other game when using wine.
Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Mouse movement is limited
by Monsta on Sunday November 23rd 2008, 11:51
Mouse behaves very strangely. I try to turn around and at some point mouse seems to gets stuck and Max won't turn anymore in that direction, only in the opposite one.
If I'd run the game in virtual desktop mode, I'd say that the mouse cursor was running out of game window... but this glitch happens in full-screen mode.
Installer not working
by Michael Sharp on Sunday November 2nd 2008, 23:13
This game is rated as paltinum, but won't install?
This seems odd. After the progress bar reaches 100%, a window come up sayin "Detecting System...." Shortly afterwards, I get a report that a call to a dll crashed, and that the app will now exit.
After that, its as if the installer never ran at all. None of the installed files remain.
Cant install the 1.05 patch
by Henrik Sommerland on Sunday September 28th 2008, 8:53

Input issue?
by Ian Higginson on Wednesday August 6th 2008, 16:20
Hi!
The game seems to work pretty fine so far for me, though there's a slight issue. I'm not sure if this is at the start of every level or just when the game loads up a level for the first time, but as soon as I try to move Max with the arrow keys the game instantly pauses. As soon as I unpause it then it runs just fine but it can be pretty annoying to have this happen. Any thoughts on why it does this? I'm using Wine 1.1.2 at the moment.
Fatal Errors
by Itix on Sunday August 3rd 2008, 5:22
Using ubuntu 8.04, synaptics wine version (from ubuntu repositories, I think it is rc2, 3 or 4) and the game does NOT work.
If I start the game, I get the tiny box with options, parental control, d3d etc. If I choose hardware acceleration, I sometimes get to the in game menu where I choose new game and everything just freeze at loading screen. Most of the time with hardware acceleration and all the time with software acceleration, I only get to the end of the first loading bar and the game crashes.
Running it with "WINEDEBUG=fixme-all wine MaxPayne.exe" gives me the following output:
err:quartz:Parser_Destroy pinref should be null, is 1, destroying anyway
err:d3d:WineD3D_ChoosePixelFormat Can't find a suitable iPixelFormat
...plus! The strangest thing happens; A box pops up that says either "Exception in EngineInit: directory /data/database/weapons/beretta not found"
When I check, there is no /data at all. It's super strange... the entire max payne folder is like 40 MBs which a bit less than the 800 MBs the CD said it would eat away from my hard drive.
...and this lot from a game that has got platinum in every review when morrowind works at least gold and ranges from garbage to gold in various reviews. Has anyone experienced anything similar?
Fails to open
by Huseyin on Friday June 27th 2008, 11:41
I used the 1.05 patch and nocd crack. When i open MaxPayne.exe, the configuration panel opens. Then i click play button. I see a black screen, then loading screen of Max Payne. Then i crash into desktop with an error like this:
"Exception in engineInit: R_Script: Unknown variable "Id" in [properties]/[p3I6a_004_cam]/[aesir.txt]!
I searched for that error, and found out that some errors like this (not exactly this) occur when you install Max Payne and Max Payne 2 at the same folder. I didn't install Max Payne 2 though, i never tried to do so.
Does not start
by Tom on Wednesday June 25th 2008, 17:53
Maxpayne fails to start for me.
No either I'm doing something wrong, or just forgetting something, I just did not expect to have to go searching to get this 'platinum' game working post 1.0 release...
It moans about:
err:module:attach_process_dlls "MSVCIRT.dll" failed to initialize, aborting
err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"D:\\MaxPayne\\MaxPayne.exe" failed, status c0000005
The dll gets copied over to the game's dir during install.
It and a few others are all UPPERCASE though, I've tried renaming and moving to windows/system windows/system32, wont budge.

It worked perfectly for me
by Michael Abbott on Friday May 2nd 2008, 14:05
I am astonished. Apart from an unfortunate ATI shader bug (which affected *everything*, and was quickly fixed), this game worked flawlessly for me from start to finish. I have to say that this has been a truly remarkable exception. Played from start to finish without any issues.
Come to think of it, Return to Castle Wolfenstein is also playing perfectly. Must be something about the engines.

Animation of Max Payne character
by Martin Klapetek on Saturday March 10th 2007, 13:30
Hi, I have wine 0.9.32 compiled from sources and Fedora Core 6 with kernel 2.6.19-1.2895. I can run the Max Payne smoothly, everything works fine, but in the game when I'm moving (or standing, it doesn't matter) the character still stand in one pose, his not moving his legs or arms and in fact nothing on him is moving. Can you help me with that?
Sound
by Keith Burgoyne on Wednesday March 7th 2007, 21:54
I seem to have trouble running Max Payne with sound. Alsa doesn't work, nor does OSS; I am able to run other games like WarCraft III using OSS. Wine suggests that I emulate the hardware, and setting up winecfg to do so allows me to hear sound in-game. However, quite often the sound reverts to a deafening white hissing noise.
I do not see an option to turn off surround sound in the pre-game options, nor the in-game options.

Testing needed
by Ed Black on Friday September 29th 2006, 6:43
Note on this - I've experienced severe issues and brokenness with Max Payne in 0.9.20 on a couple of different machines - the game needs testing with 0.9.20 and 0.9.21 to check for regression.
My time's almost entirely taken up with other stuff right now, so this is a note to anyone who's able to take the time to do it - or a reminder if nobody's bothered when I come back.
